NLM illegally removes DA posters Alex Rose-Innes The Nkomazi Local Municipality (NLM) in Malalane, in following in the footsteps of its counterparts in the Free State, is resorting to dirty political tricks prior to the August 2016 elections. In what is said to be an illegal move, 97 election posters belonging to the Democratic Party (DA) and allegedly those of the Freedom Front Plus (VF+), were removed in the town. According to a statement by the DA that in doing this, the NLM even contravened its own bylaws. According to the Electoral Code of Conduct, which all political parties had signed, no one was allowed to destroy,

remove or deface posters of other parties. Earlier this year the EFF was also accused of pasting its own registration posters over that of the DA on the East Rand in Gauteng after photos of it surfaced on social media. At the time, the EFF denied any knowledge and accountability for the desecration of another party’s posters. However, national spokesperson for the DA, Refiloe Ntsekhe told the media that there had been other incidences as well. Last week, the DA leader in Bloemfontein accused the ANC of damaging and stealing DA posters in the city and pasting Jacob Zuma’s face over them. In a statement, the DA in Mpumalanga said the ANC” is running scared.” This after more service delivery protests in the province saw

residents of Matsulu venting their anger by burning tyres on the N4 to Malalane at the beginning of last week. In this latest incident of poster removal, the DA offices in Mpumalanga were contacted by residents of Malalane to report that the NLM was removing DA posters despite the fact that SALGA had instructed all municipalities to “relax” bylaws regarding displaying of political posters throughout the period of the local government elections. Only three of the 97 posters around the town were left as the DA candidate for Ward 30, Mariette Preddy, resorted to capturing the illegal removal of the party’s posters at the entrance to Fish Eagle Bend, on camera. According to a statement received from the DA, “the NLM contravened their own

bylaws published in 2009, by removing DA election posters which indicates that: firstly a warning must be given to offenders before their posters or signage are removed and that if not removed, the posters or signage will then be removed and destroyed. No warning was given to the DA.” Ms Preddy told the NewsHorn that she was indeed in possession of proof that she had adhered to all laws and regulations pertaining to displaying the party’s poster in Malalane. The DA is now considering laying charges against the municipality for the illegal removal of posters and furthermore the theft of an additional 37 posters, making it clear in their media statement that “we cannot be intimidated for exercising our freedom.”

Award ceremony for students at Villa Langa Alex Rose-Innes André Dique from Villa Langa held a special award ceremony for the hospitality students who have just successfully completed their internship at his guesthouse in Malalane. A governmental learnership programme offers unemployed young people the opportunity to study hospitality for a oneyear fully paid course. Four months into the

course, the students are placed with various guest houses in Nkomazi to obtain practical experience. As far as NewHorn could assess, Villa Langa in Fish Eagle Bend, is the only guesthouse to present their trainees with actual certificates at a special event. The pride on their faces was evident as the students took the well wishes of the Diques, André and Ulanda, with them into the future.

Nkomazi in mourning as crime escalates Alex Rose-Innes It has been a sad two weeks for the Onderberg community. First, a resident, husband and father of Fish Eagle Bend in Malalane went missing and more recently, Annatjie Myburgh was hijacked near Rocky’s Drift. Word was received on Sunday that her body had been found in joint operation between security companies and the police after information was received. A suspect has already been taken into custody and another arrest is imminent. Despite searches undertaken by the community and the security companies in Nkomazi

as well as the local anti-crime groups of not only Malalane, but Hectorspruit as well, Vosloo was still missing by time of going to print.

Wouter Vosloo of Malalane went missing from Fish Eagle Bend.

Hijackings in the area are an alarming trend It seems as if hijackings in Nkomazi are increasing and especially women are advised not to drive alone, walk alone or cycle alone. While not many are aware of the successes of our local security companies, especially with regard to hijacked and stolen vehicles being retrieved, the excellent cooperation between these companies and local SAPS are exceptional. On Saturday, another hijack took place at the junction of the R40 and

N4. Three cars with six suspects in were involved, but the victim was not hurt. On Friday, a hijacked personnel carrier truck was found, a mere hour after it was hijacked near Mbuzini. Securicon’s operational task team and members of Tracker worked side by side for a positive outcome. In another recent incident, Securicon, in a joint operation with Tracker, SAPS and the flying squad of White Rive,r recovered a stolen

In a third incident last week, after a high speed chase towards Naas, the driver of a white Polo sedan lost control of his vehicle and allowed Securicon to arrest two suspects. Several, what is suspected to be stolen bank cards and slips, were found in their possession.

Mozambican debt nightmare has negative effect Jan Engelbrecht highlights the effect of the Moz currency crisis on the Nkomazi region. Komatipoort business has quieted down. Why? There is no denying that the drought has had an adverse effect on the region. But the recent decline of business income in Komatipoort, Malalane and Hectorspruit is a direct effect of the deteriorating political and social situation in Mozambique. Komatipoort business relies heavily on the buying power from Mozambique which has seen business growing steadily in the border town. Retailers such as SuperSpar attribute more than 60% of their sales to Mozambican buying power, as is also the case with local general dealers, purveyors of bulk supplies, liquor outlets and a variety of other general commodities. Lately, less and less Mozambican buyers cross the border to buy in Komatipoort. This has resulted in Komatipoort not only suffering the effects of winter, but also on an economic level. Will this change soon?

Over the last few years, Mozambique was one of the fastest growing African economies, mainly due to its huge reserves of coal and natural gas. But the boom is over. The country has been badly hit by a currency crisis. In part this was caused by the renewed violent conflict between the government and armed supporters of the biggest opposition party and former guerilla movement Renamo. But the main reason is the drop in commodity prices. President Filipe Nyusi, as published in the Deutsche Welle (DW) publications (read http://www.dw.com/en/ mozambique-looks-to-china-for-financialhelp/a-19266055) has for months been denying media reports about financial scandals, corruption and misappropriation of state monies, but in April this year had to own up to hidden public debt to the amount of 1.25 billion Euros ($1.4 billion). This enormous debt was accumulated by his predecessor and mentor Armando

Having survived many adverse situations, this border town has a history of survival.

Guebuza. Nyusi’s admission further highlighted the seriousness of the country’s economic crisis. Western donors reacted swiftly, with the International Monetary Fund stopping the transfer of the second installment of a previously authorised credit and suspending ongoing negotiations with Maputo on further financial aid. The group of 14 main donors, known as the G14, also temporarily suspended financial support for the state budget. The US followe suit and announced a review of bilateral development cooperation. The consequence was the depreciation of the national Mozambican currency the metical, which has lost 35% of its value since the beginning of this year. Foreign exchange reserves have dwindled by a quarter in the same period of time. If the drought is broken, it is predicted that the economy of South Africa will pick up, which lies not in human hands, but God’s. In as far as Mozambique is concerned, the Mozambican president and his government are facing a dire financial crisis. Nyusi is trying to win time and secure his political survival with fresh loans from China. Mozambican economist Eduardo Sengo believes his country has no alternative but to turn to China in this crisis. Relations with traditional donors were severely disrupted by the recent financial scandals. He points out that the Chinese are the only ones willing to help and happy to accept the country’s commodities as security. But this is unlikely to help the

Filipe Nyusi. Mozambican economy in the long term. This is well explained by another economic analyst Ericino de Salema who refers to this as “tied aid”, i.e. help that comes attached to several conditions. ‘Chinese loans for building projects are normally tied to contracts going to a Chinese firms’. Mozambique has no other choice. Is Komatipoort financially dying? According to Jan Engelbrecht, principal of Fine and Country Lowveld Kruger South, the strongest feature of the town is its survival strength. This town which originated in 1878 survived the Anglo Boer War, droughts, wars in Mozambique and have always adapted and developed. Business is hurt, but tourism remains a strong asset. With the upcoming Prawn Festival it is hoped that much needed cash will be injected into the town’s coffers by visitors. The annual show festival is well on track andaccording to the festival committee, social media enquiries are already exceeding 35000 and grows progressively as this popular event gains momentum. The fortunate mix of farming, tourism, retail and manufacturing balance demand and supply in Komatipoort. Speaking properties, rental demand continues to exceed available houses and business properties. This acknowledges the challenges of the present crisis, but is evident that the town has become all the more self-sustainable and a destination in its own rights.

Murderer handed a hefty sentence Dex Sibiya

The lottery papers used to wrap dagga.

Drug dealer caught trying to outsmart police Tipho Mathonsi Police were too smart for a 40-year old man who wrapped dagga in Lotto papers thinking he had disguised the drug. Sipho Sibiya was arrested on Saturday morning with a staggering load of dagga he wrapped in lottery papers, explained Lt. Mzwandile Nyambi. “Not everyone can dodge the

police and this is example that we have all the means to identify crime in the society. The man thought he was clever and rolled his stuff in lottery papers but we knew he was dealing in drugs and we arrested him in possession with the drug,” said Nyambi. At that stage, the drug had not been weighed and the street value attached to it could not be made known, he said. “We strive to make this area a drug-free place

The suspect on his way to jail.

Cop murderer sentenced to 18-years in jail Sam Nyalunga The Nelspruit High Court has successfully sentenced one of the three men accused of murdering a policeman, police spokesman Lt. Mzwandile Nyambi said. Sindy Mvubu (24) was sentenced to an effective 18 years in prison for the murder of Constable Sifiso Mabuza who worked for Komatipoort Crime Intelligence. Mabuza was shot and killed in his house in Langeloop on 8 November 2013 when three men broke into his house before opening fire. Mvubu also faces a number of years in prison for a litany of crimes associated with the murder of Mabuza. He was sentenced to 10 years for housebreaking, six years for possession of unlicensed firearm and three years for possession of ammunition.

He was arrested along with Wiseman Ngomane and Victor Nkomo who would also stand trial for the same offence. According to Nyambi, the suspects were out on R1 500 bail and Victor was later killed in a tavern. “Mvubu turned state witness and the court was able to finalise his case. The trial involving the others will continue until justice is ensured,” said Nyambi. Nyambi added that there was another suspect that the court has issued a warrant of arrest for. “We will get this one behind bars soon so that the court can finalise the case,” he said adding that the police were human beings employed to enforce law by the state and to be respected. “The reason for murdering Constable Mabuza was solely because he was investigating these men. He was doing his work and there was no reason for killing him,” Nyambi said.

for everyone. We also rely on tip-offs from community members to identify drug dealers in the society. People must not be afraid to give information to the police because we treat such with high confidentiality and there are no risks,” he said.

Magistrate Edgar Moletsane handed down a 15-year sentence in the Tonga Regional Court after having found a 38-year old man guilty of murder and assault. The accused Khumbulani Matsebula, was sentenced to 12 years for murder and three years for assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm. According to reports, Matsebula killed Andile Msithini earlier this year at a tavern in Schoemansdal. The murderer and victim were drinking together when Msithini was stabbed to death with a knife. The prosecution proved beyond a doubt that Matsebula did kill the victim who was rushed to Shongwe Hospital but declared dead on arrival. The Schoemansdal Police have welcomed the sentence as this will send a clear message to the community to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.

Attractive Marloth Park always a good investment Extracts from publications of hospitality product owners, as well as from Marloth Park related portals are evidence of the exceptional quality of this remarkable holiday township where interaction with game can be experienced from the mere the distance from one’s hand to one’s face. To land owners it provides the simultaneous advantage of a relative safe property investment. Why does Marloth Park Holiday Township continue to expand and defy all common property related limits? An extract from the portal Marloth Park Marketing summarises it well: “ Dit was een van die beste vakansies wat ons nog gehad het. Dit was nie eers nodig om na die Krugerwildtuin te ry nie want ek dink nie mens sou eers die diere so beleef het soos by jou plek nie.“ (Kindly viewhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/ marlothparkmarketing/). Combine this testimony with solid security services, all essential goods being available in stores in the town, the continual growing Komatipoort one-stop retail hub but 25 minutes away, not to forget the neighbouring Kruger National Park and nothing needs to be added. Marloth Park is a unique holiday town nature conservancy where man and animal peacefully share the same domain. An iconic holiday town situated in the natural bushveld and adjacent to the famous Kruger National Park (KNP), is any homeowners dream.  Nestled in a bend of the Crocodile River, which forms the southern boundary of the KNP, the town recently enjoys the status of a nature conservancy registered with the Parks Board of Mpumalanga. The town shares most of the plant, animal and bird species found in the southern part of the Park itself, save for certain dangerous species such as the Big Five, although they can be viewed across the the Crocodile river from the town. It consists of a development zone and a conservation zone, the development zone of 1099 ha consisting

of 6.9 ha utilised as municipal areas, 48 ha as road surfaces and 132 ha as road reserves. The remaining portion has been divided into approximately 4500 plots for residential development. More than 40% of the available land area within the town is devoted to parkland where no building activity is permitted. This further enhances the opportunity to view

animals and birds in their natural state. The residential development portion currently has a development footprint of 28 ha and landscaped gardens constituting a further 289 ha. The conservation zone consists of the remaining 528 ha, remnants of the natural vegetation scattered throughout the area…. When talking Marloth Park, it is about

staying as intimately and closely as is possible to nature, within a safe environment, as what could possibly be imagined. Jan Engelbrecht of Fine and Country Lowveld Kruger South admits that the appointment of JAP Nel, who recently joined  Gerrie Aucamp, confirmed their expectation that the Park has a demand defying those of commercial towns. The appetite of buyers goes far beyond investors trusting this highly sought after area for its return on investments. The town is popular amongst locals, mostly metropolitan South Africans and continues to be in demand by foreign buyers. Local hardware suppliers such as Buco confirms a continued growth of improvements in the Park, irrespective of local pains experienced as a consequence of the financial troubles of Mozambique, the drought and the declining South African economy. “Marloth Park is our South African Mauritius”  a repetitive buyer of properties in Marloth  said to a  Fine and Country consultant.  External factors will not easily affect property value in the Park in a negative way. In fact, it will remain consistent when others may have declined. For property enquiries JAP or Gerrie can be contacted, or alternatively, the principals Jan and Chris Engelbrecht. NewsHorn will during the celebrations of the Kruger National Parks’ 90th birthday, share snippets of interesting information with our readers.

Our iconic Kruger National Park is 90 years old! Dex Sibiya & Alex Rose-Innes The year 1926 saw the Kruger National Park (KNP) proclaimed on 31 May. The so called Government Game Reserve (Gouvernements Wildtuin) was proclaimed by the South African Republic (ZAR - more or less comprising current provinces of Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Gauteng and North West) on 26 March 1898 - the area between the Sabie and Crocodile rivers. This was a tumultuous period in the country’s history and less than a year later on 11 October 1899, ZAR President Paul Kruger declared war on the British Empire. During the last few months of the South Africa War, the Government Game Reserve was re-proclaimed by the British authority and the Sabi Game Reserve proclaimed in June 1902, the Shingwedzi Game Reserve the next year, which incorporated the area between the Letaba and Luvuvhu rivers. On 28 August 1903, a vast tract of the current Kruger National Park, that between the Sabie and Olifants rivers was added to the Sabi Game Reserve. Over subsequent years many farms and areas were added or removed until the Kruger National Park proclamation, after which this continued to take place. The KNP is the largest and oldest park administered by South African National Parks (SANParks). Tourism was formally conceived in the 1923 when the first tourists visited the Park by train. The first overnight facilities were opened in 1928 at Pretoriuskop, Satara and Skukuza (then known as Sabi Bridge). In the 1990’s, the concept of co-operative management

started to become a reality with the People and Conservation Department being formed, mainly to promote community access and benefit sharing for the

neighbouring communities. Early 2000 saw an agreement being signed by Mozambique, South Africa and Zimbabwe which endorses the creation of

the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, to become one of the greatest conservation area in Africa extending over some 35 000 square kilometres.

Permaculture brings many benefits to Hoechst Primary Alex Rose-Innes

Fresh vegetables from their own garden at Hoechst primary school are used to supplement the feeding scheme.

After having attended a permaculture workshop recently, the learners at Hoechst Primary have started their own food garden which is now supplementing the existing feeding scheme at the school. Even the Health Department has approached the school to become a fully fledged health promoting school, whilst the Department of Education has declared it a self-managing school. The school is adamant to win a competition which is to be hosted for similar schools. What a wonderful example of how working the available land to feed and uplift communities. Go Hoescht! In another conservation and environmental drive, the school is now collecting two litre bottles after a visit from an official of Neopack who showed the eager learners how to benefit financially from it and simultaneously care for the earth. The best collector stands to earn a cash prize as will those who collected the second and third most plastic bottles. The respective winners of the schools in Nkomazi area will also be treated to dinner at a restaurant. This school is an example to all.

Permaculture has taught learners to grown their own food gardens.

International role players at KNP workshop Alex Rose-Innes The University of Pretoria’s Veterinary Genetics Laboratory (VGL) through its RhODISÒ (Rhino DNA Index

System) program in partnership with WWF, TRAFFIC and TRACE hosted an international delegation at a workshop in the Kruger National Park (KNP) recently.  The aim of the workshop was to standardise wildlife forensic procedures,

sampling and DNA testing methods in order to establish systems to return horn samples recovered in consumer countries for matching to the RhODIS database more effectively. The group included high level officials from USAID, World Bank, US Fish

and Wildlife, Traffic and representatives from scientific institutions in Vietnam, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Australia, Indonesia and other countries. Read more about it online at www. newshorn.co.za

Similarly, more modern weapons have attracted the interest of young and old, and a number of sporting disciplines and organisations now exist for those that enjoy pitting their shooting skills against those of others. The South African Defensive Pistol Association (SADPA) is one such a sporting organisation, and affiliates with the International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA). SADPA in represented locally by the Lebombo Defensive Pistol Club (LDPC), serving members in the Onderberg area. LDPC had the honour of hosting the annual SADPA Northern Nationals in mid-June. The competition, held over 4 days, attracted competitors from across the country. Hugely successful, it earned praise from all those that attended and thoroughly demonstrated that Komatipoort has the capacity to host sporting events at a national level. Thomas Holder, chairman of LDPC, along with a large safety officer team ensured that the competition flowed smoothly from stage to stage, with no injuries or safety incidents. From small beginnings, SADPA has grown to a significant organisation with a healthy and enthusiastic membership, consisting of young and old, often entire families. Unlike some shooting sports where the shooter with the most expensive equipment usually stands the best chance of winning, SADPA encourages members to use defensive firearms in as original a form as possible. Shooting scenarios are designed to simulate realistic defensive situations as one might encounter in real life, and which South Africans certainly do. In addition to improving dexterity with potentially life-saving weapons, it encourages safe handling practises with an absolutely ruthless approach to range safety irrespective of the age of the participant. Given that many shooting injuries result from accidents associated with poor firearms handling and discipline, these skills are as valuable as the ability to shoot. The management of LDPC and SADPA wishes to thank local sponsors for their support, without which the event would not have been possible. In particular, Laeveld Trekkers, Buco and Securicon played an indispensable role along with Electra of Nelspruit. The SADPA executive team congratulated Thomas and his team with an excellently-presented event. A second national shooting event will be held in early July, also at Komatipoort. With 300 competitors attending over several days, this too will provide a very welcome cash injection into the local economy.

Ten men squad wins Selati - Mashaba United makes history

Mzinti Ladies soccer team walked away with the first prize in the womens’ section.

Dex Sibiya A ten men squad made history last Sunday when Mashaba United was crowned the 2016 Selati Cup champions. Minutes into the rematch of the final encounter between Mashaba United and Block A Naughty Boys, Mashaba United was already showing to be the stronger side, applying pressure on Naughty Boys’ midfield and backline. However, Mashaba United’s last line of defense was sent back into the showers after receiving a red card after an alleged altercation between the goalkeeper and a player during a free-kick into Mashaba United’s box. Shortly after the goalkeeper left the pitch, Mashaba United got its act together and scored the opening goal, sending the stadium into a frenzy. They were then given a chance to extend their lead when one of their key strikers was brought down inside Naughty Boys’ box. The one-on-one encounter between goalkeeper and Mashaba United’s kicker favoured the Naughty Boys and denied Mashaba United the chance to increase their lead.

Moments before halftime, the Naughty Boys scored the equalising goal that had the crowd on their feet. The intensity of last week’s encounter that ended as a one-all draw returned as the scoreboard was set to one all. Supporters were thrilled and entertained by the demonstration of soccer skills and talent. At just the right moment, Mashaba United broke the deadlock and found the second and decisive goal. Mashaba United players and supporters were thrilled with the victory, leading to celebrations taking place outside the stadium for hours after the match. Apart from Mashaba United’s victory, Mzinti Ladies also walked away as the newly crowned champions in the ladies soccer tournament section. Kenneth Phiri of RCL Foods, thanked all the stakeholders who were involved in making this tournament a success. “It is Needless to say that without the support of all our stakeholders none of this may have been possible. So their contribution has meant the world in making the tournament a massive success and we appreciate it. Even the support of the different team followers and the community, they have made the tournament a success,” Phiri told NewsHorn.

We are the champions!
