We have been working very hard here at ABE to make sure we provide the safest school possible for all those who enter our doors. From secured entrances, background checks of those volunteering in classrooms or simply providing a parking lot that is safer to navigate. In the times we currently live in we are constantly reviewing safety protocols and procedures with staff and students so we are as prepared as possible in the event of an emergency. The District has recently implemented a program called ALICE that is the acronym for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate. The philosophy of ALICE is to use technology and information in a way so that staff and students can make informed decisions during a crisis, remove as many people as possible from the danger zone, and provide realistic training so that those involved in a crisis have a better chance of surviving. In cooperation with the police and fire department we have done the following: • Determined three nearby area’s students can go if we ever have to leave the school due to an immediate danger in the building. • One of the three locations would allow us to enter a building, if there was severe weather conditions, until buses arrive to pick up staff and students. • Discussed the reunification (reuniting students with their parents or designated caregiver) process and will be practicing this process as a staff in the near future We also conduct fire drills on a monthly basis in case we ever have to evacuate the building. In cooperation with the Fire Department we recently have changed our tornado shelter locations in the school that were deemed safer, and have had a number of practice runs to those locations to ensure we are able to get the entire school to safety in under 3 minutes. We take the safety of all those who enter our building serious and will continue to review and practice our procedures so we are as prepared as possible in the event of an emergency. Sincerely Mr. B
What’s in a Word? Using the Term “Gym” vs. “Physical Education” By Michelle Ortiz, SHAPE America Senior Program Manager “But what’s the difference between gym and PE?” asks one of my usually very excited sixth graders, probably after asking me “what are we going to do in gym today?” I reply with my typical response, “The gym is the location of physical education.” As a former physical education teacher, I’ve had numerous students refer to my class as “gym” and I’ve had to correct those numerous students by reminding them of the correct term. It may not seem like a big deal on the outside, but the terminology we use to refer to physical education plays a large part in how the profession is perceived by others. With the nation’s emphasis on education reform, common core, and teacher evaluation, the importance of physical education is, at times, undermined. We have a chance to influence how physical education is viewed through the language we use when we talk about it. Our National Standards state that the goal of physical education is to develop physically literate individuals who have the knowledge, skills, and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of healthful physical activity. A comprehensive physical education program teaches students skills that can be used for a lifetime to maintain health and prevent chronic disease, which puts physical education in a position to be a proactive solution to our nation’s health crisis. But we have to get others to see the big picture. We can do this by starting with small changes. Physical education is as important as other subjects, including math and literacy, and should be treated as such - but that vision cannot be fulfilled if we keep belittling its value by referring to physical education as merely “gym.” A person does not go to gym; a person goes to physical education in the gym to learn how to lead a physically active and healthy lifestyle.

Students are applying to attend a district, not a particular school. • Applications are accepted only between the dates of February 1st and April 29th, 2016, Monday -‐ Friday, from 8 am to 4 pm. The website will not be available for data entry until February 1st. • Applications may be mailed, but any application received after April 29, 2016 at 4:00 pm will be rejected regardless of postmark. • Incomplete or inaccurate applications may be denied. • Applications are available on the DPI website (this is the preferred method of application), but only during the application period mentioned above: ttp://dpi.wi.gov/open-enrollment or from Baraboo High School at 1201 Draper Street. • If your child is currently attending the Baraboo School District and you moved into another district since last February, you MUST apply for open enrollment in order for your student to continue to attend here. • Parents may request a speciUic school or program on their open enrollment application, but enrollment in that particular school is subject to space and other limitations and is not guaranteed. • If you live in another district and your student is already attending here under open enrollment, they may continue to attend here without re-‐applying, unless they are entering high school in the fall of 2016. If you have any questions, please contact Susan Sprecher at (608)355-‐3955.
KID STOP UPDATES Kid Stop is open 5 days a week before and after school. If you are unable to pick up your child at the time school lets out (1pm Wednesdays and 3pm all other days), consider signing your child up for our Kid Stop after school program. This is also a great alternative to having your child waiting outside before school as the staff at school are not available to watch students until 7:30am. Any questions, please call Pat Gavin, Kid Stop Coordinator, at 355-3925, ext. 7150. DRESSING FOR THE SEASON - Parents, please consider sending extra clothes with your child for Kid Stop. By the end of the day many times socks, pant legs, gloves, hats, etc. are soaked through from recess time during his/her school day. If you would like to put an extra item or two in your child’s backpack for Kid Stop use, their outside time will be much more enjoyable. Please remember that all children need snow pants, boots, hats and mittens/gloves to play in the snow.
The Madison Mallards want to get area kids excited about reading! They are offering the students at our school to be part of “Maynard’s Lil’ Ducks Reading Program 2016”. It is a free, incentive-based program. The program will run for two months, February 8 - April 8, with prizes being awarded for students that meet their reading goals set by their teacher. The Mallards will be providing three prizes corresponding to first, second, and third base that students may earn. If your child completes all three of the goals, he/she will receive 2 FREE TICKETS TO A MALLARDS’ BASEBALL GAME! More information will be coming home with your child on February 5.
Read your way to the top of the tubing hill at Cascade Mountain! February is the last month that students at ABE may earn a free tubing pass at Cascade Mountain by reading 20 minutes a day for the month. Your child simply reads each night for 20 minutes and has a parent/guardian initial each day that they have read on the calendar provided. At the end of the month the calendar should be returned to the classroom teacher. The teacher will send the calendar to the library. A certificate will be issued with the student’s name and school. This certificate can then be taken to Cascade Mountain any Sunday through Thursday, during the month of March, and the student will receive a free tubing ticket. If you have any questions, please contact the library media center at 355-3910, ext. 6122. Completed January reading calendars may be turned in on Monday, February 1, to receive the tubing pass for the month of February.
