every special fund donation a life will be saved, a bond created and a home found. All because of you! Our generous sponsors, item donors and attendees have made the Annual Auction for the Animals the “must attend” event of the Greater Seacoast area. We are so grateful for each and every one that has made this event a success every year, for over 20 years! The New Hampshire SPCA would not be able to save countless animals’ lives, both here at our shelter and in the community, teach thousands of children, or advocate for those who have no voice, without the considerable time and effort of each and every dedicated sponsor, donor, volunteer and attendee.

Finding forever homes for the dogs at the NHSPCA is one of the most rewarding parts of Paws Walk. Even better is when a dedicated volunteer and our Top Alumni Fundraiser is hit with the “this one” moment we all know so well and adopts a dog themselves! That is the story of the Sepanski family and Lucy. James and Judy Sepanski began volunteering at the NHSPCA in December of last year. In true volunteer fashion, it only took them a matter of weeks to find their first dog to adopt. Taffy, a lab terrier mix who loves a treat and is a true sweetheart, won their family over. While walking the dogs at the shelter, Judy was continually keeping her eye out for a companion for Taffy. Along came Lucy, a Catahoula hound mix who would be making her debut at Paws Walk. Lucy arrived at the NHSPCA from a shelter in Alabama just a few days before the event and won over hearts with her lively personality and her striking looks. During the Dogs on the Catwalk segment of Paws Walk, Lucy stunningly strut down the runway. That instant feeling of connection prompted the Sepanski’s to make their second adoption a mere 6 months, almost to the day, of their first adoption. Lucy instantly filled up the loving space available in the Sepanski Family. She is now Judy’s trusted running companion and can go for miles! Taffy and Lucy get along great and they love to go on adventures together. One of their favorite activities is meeting up with a great group of NHSPCA alumni adopters at the beach and playing the day away. In addition to opening

Butterscotch, Aslan and Pickle would rise and explore their temporary world at our home. First it was just their crate but in a couple of hours, a bigger world was created. Over the next few days, a variety of toys and a climbing structure were added to create both entertainment and exercise options. Then there were our dogs who desperately wanted to play with them... We are one of many families who have opened their homes and their hearts to caring for our babies as they take the time to grow and be ready to find their forever homes. Some are fed every few hours in their first weeks of life, some have moms with their litters and some come alone and join another litter for warmth and company. They would all linger in a cage, without the chance to run and play if it weren’t for our foster families. Though most don’t know it, we have all kinds of animals in foster care. Some are horses who are enjoying their final years, some are dogs recuperating from surgeries and some are the babies I mentioned above. It takes all kinds of support to prepare the animals in our care for new homes. It’s medical care, surgeries, behavioral support, and lots of TLC - and that’s where you come in… If you ever thought that this was another way to get involved, give us a call. We would welcome widening our circle of compassion. On behalf of the animals,

the honor of caring for five such munchkins. My family and I are taking care of a litter of kittens that were found under a porch and brought to the Adoption Center. They were approximately four weeks old with tiny paws and sweet innocent eyes. Their cry could melt anyone’s heart and they melted mine. It was with great enthusiasm at home that we agreed to help raise these babies until they were old enough to be adopted and so they were piled into a crate for the journey and we left together at the end of the day. It had been a few years since we had fostered as we had added a new puppy to our mix and I had forgotten how much fun it could be. Every morning the kittens now named Tux, Tippy,

SUMMER 2015

WILL CRUELTY TO ANIMALS EVER END?

It is almost unbelievable that in this day and age, that animal cruelty is still taking place in New Hampshire. You may not read about it in the newspapers or see big rescues happening on television every day, but cruelty still exists here…. every day of the week. If this statement shocks you, I’m sorry. If it moves you to do something about it, that is great. Just this year (and this is only August!) we have received 389 animal cruelty complaints. That’s just complaints called into the NHSPCA. It doesn’t take into consideration the calls to other agencies, Police Departments etc. The NHSPCA assisted local Police Departments in seizing 18 animals this year so far and have had a total of 62 animals surrendered to us voluntarily due to a cruelty investigation. The hardest part of my job is seeing neglected and abused animals, suffering sometimes to the point that the veterinarians can’t do anything to save them and euthanasia is the only humane option. Others only need the food and water that they’ve been deprived of and you can see a change in them within just days. It’s a miracle what a little food and water can do for a dog or horse or other animal who has not had any. They begin gaining their weight back, along with their luster. For 13 years I have been writing articles for the NHSPCA newspaper about animal cruelty and what people can do to help end this suffering. Sadly, it just keeps happening over and over with no end in sight. There is always a call waiting on my voice mail telling me about some sort of cruelty happening, or worse, that happened several months ago. Please know how important it is to call

your local police agency or the NHSPCA as soon as you suspect cruelty or neglect is taking place, not several months later. Don’t be afraid to call and don’t be afraid to stand up for helpless animals. Today I have decided to write about the Staff we have here at the NHSPCA. They are a team of individuals that are dedicated to their profession and to the animals that are brought in to the shelter and not just for cruelty issues. I cannot express the feelings I have when I rescue an animal from abuse/neglect and bring it to the NHSPCA. I know once I get the animal through the front doors I can relax and take a breath. I know the animals are in the best of care and will be brought back to full health then go up for adoption and into a good home where it can be loved and cared for by responsible people. When I bring an animal to the shelter, the staff take over and our veterinarians get to work doing a complete work up on the health of the animal and complete a cruelty report that can, if needed, be used in a court of law to convict the owner of animal cruelty/ neglect. The veterinarian, whether on site or at their offices, conduct a head to tail exam and make sure each and every animal gets proper medication, surgery, and rest along with proper nourishment so they can be rehabilitated and eventually placed for adoption. Once the animal goes through the veterinarian’s exam, the staff of caregivers take over and follow the veterinarians recommendations. It is so nice to see the staff caring for the animals, taking them out for walks, changing bandages if necessary, cleaning out their kennels and giving them freshly washed blankets to lie on. From my office I can see the staff and many volunteers walking the animals and caring for them. I see them sitting on the benches we have scattered around the property and watch them give the animals the love they need to learn to trust people again. I have seen both staff and volunteers sitting on the benches or the grass just cuddling with the animals and watching the animals cuddling back, enjoying the hugs and cookies they are receiving. job.

This is why I do my job. Why I love my

BY STEVEN SPROWL, MANAGER, NHSPCA FIELD SERVICES DIVISION I am often asked how I can do the job I have, well, I just explained it to you. To see animal’s go from abused and neglected back to good health and the love they still have in their hearts amazes me. It amazes me the staff and volunteers are so dedicated to the animals and then I know it’s all worth it. To see the faces of children going home with a happy rescued dog or horse or cat is all worth it. We need to keep going as we have since 1872 and take care of the animals that were put on this earth and to make sure every animal has a home, proper nutrition and love. We can always use more volunteers and since we are not supported by the State or any government organization, we can always use donations. Check out our website and see the list of items we need for the animals and consider making a donation in honor of our animals and what the NHSPCA stands for. Thank you.

The homeless animals that come through our doors are truly supported by our community. The victims of cruelty and neglect are supported by our many friends and contributors who make the New Hampshire SPCA who and what we are. The thousands of children who learn about responsible pet ownership and will be caring for the next generation of family pets are sponsored through gifts as well. Our food share program along with our ability to provide emergency shelter happens because of the support we receive from you. Some of these gifts will care for many and sometimes it takes many gifts to care for one but each and every gift is making a difference. The question becomes, can you continue to make this gift to help the animals long after you are gone? One of our donors recently did exactly that… Barbara Ambrose had been making gifts for the animals as far back as 1990 and probably earlier. She was in her 70’s at the time and each gift either vaccinated a few cats or dogs or fed many. Her gifts were not large but they were consistent and continued for almost twenty years. When she passed last summer at age 93, she had had the foresight to fulfill her passion for caring for homeless pets and made a gift to the NHSPCA in her will. This gift is a lasting tribute to her passion for animals and will endow her annual gift – it will generate enough income each year to continue to feed the animals or vaccinate them for years and years to come. This final gift will make a difference forever. When you are considering how you want to create your legacy, consider including Natural Medicine for the Whole Familyin your estate the New Hampshire SPCA

plans and think about how endowing your annual gift would make a difference forever. We are so honored and grateful that Barbara Ambrose cared enough to plan for the future. Thank you Barbara~

4 Adoption Center News

Open Adoptions By Jen Corbin, Director of Animal Services

The NHSPCA is always looking for ways to improve and upgrade our services. In the Adoption Center, we have recently made a positive change to the adoption process by trying out and eventually implementing a more user friendly way of conducting our adoption interviews.

In the past, when an adopter came in looking for a new pet, they had to fill out an Adoption Application. Despite our attempts to lessen the intimidation factor of the application process, people still felt they were being grilled, or that we were questioning their ability to properly care for a pet. They were intimidated by that piece of paper and what it said about them. The application was never meant to feel like a punishment or a hoop that someone had to jump through and ‘prove themselves worthy’. Nevertheless, that’s how it came across, people were feeling judged and told us so. Realizing that piece of paper was getting in the way of real communication and an honest exchange about the adopter’s need and the prospective new

pet’s needs; we decided to just toss it out. And that’s what we did. Into the ‘circular file’ it went. When you come into the Adoption Center now to adopt a pet you will find someone (our counselors) who are there to help you find the pet of your dreams. We won’t simply hand you a piece of paper and say ‘please fill this out’. We’ll have a conversation with you about what you’re looking for, about your current pets, your household dynamics, and how to accommodate the new addition. We will always need to ask questions and provide education to ensure the animals in our care receive the best long-term home possible. We will always be their advocates and their voice. But what we don’t want and never have, is to turn people away with unfriendly Continued on Page 5...

It's been a fantastic year for the “big kids” in the barn. Two Rocky Mountain mares, Mocha and Montana, have been adopted after coming in from a tough situation. It didn't take long for them to brush out and really shine, with Montana getting lots of attention in her display at this year's Paws Walk. Berry, one of our senior residents – older horses tend to be with us longer – is also headed off to a new home. We've also just placed Dreamer in a great program for older kids where he'll be helping them improve their riding. He needs someone a bit more knowledgeable than just someone sitting on his back. A really big part of the success in placing these horses has been the excellent care and consistent handling they get from each of the Barn Volunteers. Each horse is different and they come from such different situations – some just need groceries to get fit, others need vet care or meds, some have “attitude” from previous poor handling, and some just need us to CARE. Betty is a great example. She came in a couple of years ago after serious neglect having

Austin is a in a temporary home for a while, but when she super cute chestnut mini who came in with Tyler. came back she just seemed resigned or tired. His blond mane is almost a “bouffant”! We also This spring with some extra brushing and a few have a couple pigs and have had several roosters extra apples smuggled in to her, she has really up front. Not always the same roosters, but I think Dr. Peppa is wondering why he's got the “guest room” with the noisy guys! Of course, there are still more horses out there that need our help and we’re trying to get to them all. To finish with a “happy tail”, some of you may remember Cowboy Troy and Barney? It's been a bit more than a year since I adopted Troy and he's fully recovered and having a great time. His “roommate” Barney was adopted by another volunteer, Linda Allen, and he hangs his halter here with Troy. Neither one of these wonderful horses would have made it without the come back. Her coat is shiny and healthier, her care and support of attitude really improved – she just wanted people the NHSPCA and our to care. Now, Betty has a much better chance volunteers! of being adopted and going to a wonderful new home where she can get to go on trail rides and Troy says, “Thanks! just be happy with her new people. Let's Ride!” Still here also are Merida (mare) and Tyler (gelding) – two Thoroughbreds – who are

Our kitchen vegetable garden that we planted in the Spring is coming along really well! Even though I can’t eat any of the things that we grow in the garden, I still think it’s pretty great that we are able to feed the classroom pets and small animals in the Adoption Center with the yummy veggies that are growing. The garden is located on the property next to the NHSPCA and is tended by the summer campers who weed, water and harvest all summer long. We all get a chance to be in the great outdoors and enjoy the long-awaited warm summer breezes. And it’s even better when I get to enjoy it from the comfort of my very own doggie stroller with one of the campers pushing me!

Junior Volunteers with Perfect Attendance! Our Junior Volunteers are kind, compassionate and hardworking teenagers who show a remarkable commitment to taking care of our cats, kittens and small animals in the Adoption Center. We realize that with a busy life full of school, sports and part-time jobs, it can be difficult to make it to every Junior Volunteer session. So we’re always impressed with the handful of teens who make it every single month!

Ceramic tiles and bricks also work very well! • Freeze-pops, frozen fruits and veggies, bowls of water with ice cubes, all make nice summer time treats that will help cool your pets. • Put a soda bottle coozie on your rat’s water bottle to help keep it cool. • Change out your fleece hammocks for cotton. • If you use a fan, keep it on low and only aim it at a portion of the cage, making sure your rat can get away from the breeze. This information was provided by Mainely Rat Rescue (MRR), an organization whose mission is to rehabilitate and find homes for surrendered or abandoned domestic rats, as well as spreading awareness, education and support. The NHSPCA frequently works in conjunction with MRR to provide loving homes for these often misunderstood animals.

For the 20142015 school year program, we have twelve Junior Volunteers with perfect attendance! They are Corey Carter, Jessica Wilson, Morgan Leonard, Sandy Clark, Brayden Danforth, Tessa Hartnett, Vivien Wallingford, Maddy Maillette, Callie Singlar, Lily Cochran, Cate Dixon, Rachel DiMartino and Kelly Anderson.

Sharing Knowledge about Pets We love it when young people visit our educational programs to share their knowledge of a particular animal with our campers and club members. Sometimes these are teens who are also Junior Volunteers and even former campers and camp counselors. Kids can learn a lot about having a specific type of pet from someone who actually owns one and cares for it in their home. Maddy Maillette, 14, of Greenland, who is presently a Junior Volunteer, owns several reptiles and has extensive knowledge about keeping them healthy and safe. Maddy has visited several camps and clubs with coloring pages, information sheets and of course, her reptiles themselves to share with other kids. Maddy has a crested gecko, a leopard gecko, a bearded dragon and a spotted python; some have been rescued and some have been purchased from responsible breeders. And since there is great interest among youth in these types of pets and we don’t have any in our classroom in the Learning Center, we greatly appreciate having Maddy, as the voice of experience, sharing her wealth of knowledge with others.

interactions and the miscommunications. Those miscommunications are much fewer now that we have done away with the application that made people feel they had to qualify for the Perfect Pet Parent Award. We don’t expect perfection, we’re not perfect, our pets aren’t perfect (well, okay, the pets are perfect!) But what we love more than anything else is to watch that happy family walk out the door with the pet of their dreams and know we were a part of this life-saving partnership between your Adoption Center and you.

Summertime Rat Care Our NHSPCA classroom rats are fortunate to live in air-conditioned comfort during the summer but the warm weather months can be very hard on the pet rats in our homes. With the heat and humidity settling in, please be mindful of your furry critters, especially your seniors. The heat can take quite a toll on the little ones and can even shorten an old rat’s life dramatically. Pet rats genetically have bad lungs and when you add excessive heat and humidity, it creates a perfect storm for respiratory distress. If you have rats suffering from chronic respiratory infections, scarred lungs or congestive heart failure, please try to keep them in an air conditioned atmosphere. Here are some tips to help keep your critters cool on hot days: • Keep the shades drawn and never put their cage in direct sunlight. • Change the water bottles often with fresh cold water; you can even give them an extra bottle with cool Pedialyte or Gatorade. • Freeze ceramic items, water bottles or anything that will withstand a rat’s teeth and rotate them in the cage.

Your

Gift Will Be Doubled and Give Twice the Love & Hope to animals like Kirby YOUR DOLLARS CAN GO

TWICE AS FAR to help animals like Kirby

$25 will double to $50 To provide food, shelter and unconditional love to homeless animals

$50 will double to $100 To help spay or neuter animals before adoption $100 will double to $200 To help animals recieve lifesaving surgery

By Courtney Vavra We are so grateful that once again, our former board president and current trustee, Jo Lamprey has generously offered to match dollar for dollar any gift you send by October 31, 2015, up to $25,000. Gifts will be doubled to help even more animals than before! This matching gift opportunity couldn’t be needed more. Our shelter is full of unwanted, abandoned and abused animals who need food, water, shelter, medical care and a new family to cherish them. Animals like Kirby, who was found limping on the beach with a broken front leg. His owners were located but they couldn’t afford veterinary care to help him. When Kirby was brought to us, we knew we couldn’t turn the suffering little dog away. As your local animal shelter, the New Hampshire SPCA has been offering hope and help to animals like Kirby and countless other cats, dogs, horses, and other animals for 144 years. Please give now at www.nhspca.org. It’s critical we receive your gift by October 31, so the animals receive the matching funds. Thank you so much for your support!

SUMMER 2015

10 Volunteer a note from

Richard

Summer is always a busy time at the NHSPCA. Volunteers who winter in the south and college students on summer break add to the hundreds of volunteers who come each month to help care for the animals. Volunteers also assist with offsite adoption and outreach events, help with Humane Education Summer Camp, help with laundry and donations sorting, and assist with various administrative tasks. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the 80+ volunteers who helped with Paws Walk on June 7. With their assistance, everything Paws Walk-related went smoothly, from setting up,

SUMMER 2015

to helping with Registration, assisting vendors, selling raffle tickets and helping with parking. The weather was perfect, and the success of the event can be measured not only in much needed funds for the animals, but by the smiles and wagging tails sported by the participants. S o, t h a n k y o u N H S P C A volunteers, for caring so much. We couldn’t do all that we do without your help. - Richard Maxfield,Volunteer Coordinator

It seems to us she might be part Siamese or Abyssinian. One night we found her on the kitchen counter stretched out up on her hind legs while her face was nudging open one of the cabinet doors that was left slightly ajar. Of course it was the "goody" cabinet full of snacks and chips. Her nose for food is unparalleled. She loves to bring us presents. Some of the things she brings us we're not even sure where they come from. Her favorite item to present to us is a ring lollipop still in it's package. No matter where

She has a favorite purple ball that he throws down the and acts like he has always been here. He loves his morning rides to get coffee with me and has taken over one of the couches in the living room with our happy permission, LOL, He has full run of our yard and house as we also have a fence around the property. hallway. She will run to fetch it and bring it back to my husband to throw again. She's so smart!!! My son has taught her how to jump on his back and sit on his shoulder while he's playing video games. She is getting along fine with our other cat Scooby. He's a very easy going older male cat so we did not think it would be an issue. We can't thank you enough for bringing Mia into our lives. She is truly a special cat and we feel lucky to have her.

and loves to play. We have spoiled him with all his toys and creature comforts and he has given us more happiness than anyone could imagine. Thanks again we will keep you updated. Keep up the great work. Sincerely, Dan

Summer is coming to an end and that means the vacation is over. Children will be back in school and busy schedules will commence. But, what about Fido? What will your dog do to occupy himself now that his family is busy? I’m sure he will find something. If you want to keep your dog busy and out of trouble, we have some ideas for you. Dogs require both physical and mental enrichment to meet their exercise needs. Daily walks are still important when the lazy days of summer are over. If you’re schedule doesn’t allow for as much walk time, you have options. Doggie Daycare is great for social dogs. It gives them an appropriate outlet to play and get out their energy. Even going to daycare twice a week for half days will lead to a more relaxed dog at home. If your dog doesn’t love other dogs, there are plenty of dog walking services to get them out for some activity and adventure. Environmental enrichment is also a

great way to engage your dog’s senses when you are not home. You can engage their sense of taste with long lasting treats such as stuffed Kongs and marrow bones, freezing first makes them last even longer. Engaging their sense of smell is as easy as putting a spot of essential oils on different walls in your home. Your dog will have fun investigating these new smells. Just make sure that they are non-toxic to all your household members. You can make your dog ‘scent sticks’ by drilling small holes in PVC pipe, putting something smelly in the middle, like grass clippings, and capping the ends. Playing relaxing cd’s for your dog while you are not at home provides auditory stimulation; birdsongs, rainforest noises, or just calm relaxing music are a few options. And change out those toys from time to time. This gives your dog a little visual and tactile stimulation. You can also rotate the toys they already have, just as long as they are not getting the same old thing every day. An engaged dog is a happy dog. Training is a great activity for you and your dog that gives your dog both mental and physical stimulation. Trick training and short obedience sessions keep your dog on their toes and don’t require tons of time. In order for our

canine companions to know what we want from them, we need to teach them. Formal classes help them learn the rules and keep our dogs active. There are many training classes available here at the NHSPCA to fit any level of training, from basic obedience to fun classes such as nosework. We even have classes for dogs with fear or reactivity issues. We would love to help you keep your dog active and improve your human-canine bond. Remember to have fun with your pets, and when you’re ready for a class, give us a call in the Training Department at 603-772-2921 x113 or register online at www.nhspca.org!

We thought we would give you an update on Mia, aka "Avita." The first night we brought her home, she spent the night going between my son's bedroom and our bedroom (my husband & I) purring loudly in our ears and sleeping by our sides. I think it was her way of saying thank you. I have to say she's one of the smartest cats we've ever encountered. The first afternoon we brought her home we set her up with her own private kitty box in the downstairs bathroom. We showed her where the box was one time. Within 2 hours she remembered where it was and used it appropriately. Feeding Mia the first week was challenging. No type of catfood, dry or wet, would interest her. We finally found a premium brand from the pet store that she would tolerate but she wouldn't eat it from her kitty bowl. It would have to be left in the can. And we could not fill her up!!! We got smart though and introduced the can of food put inside her bowl and then 3 days later took the can away. She finally would eat from her bowl. She loved human food so we fed her rice and cooked vegetables to supplement her cat food. By week 2 we found a dry food she likes - Nutrish. It's the line of food by Rachel Ray. So we alternate wet and dry food and she seems to be quite happy. We have learned that Mia is quite the climber, especially at night. And she is very vocal.

SUMMER 2015

notes from Nellie

Continued From Page 4...

Long-time New Hampshire SPCA Board Member, Rachael Brown. She is the proud parent of Dalmatian ‘Sparky,’ one of several Alumni that she has adopted over the years.

Nevertheless, that’s how it came across, people were feeling judged and told us so. pet’s needs; we decided to just toss it out.

She came in a couple of years ago after serious neglect having

by Bob Hillery, Volunteer Wrangler been tied to a stall wall all the time. She was looking for knowledgeable homes.
