The Yellow Door/La Porte Jaune

TQSOI

Website: http://www.yellowdoor.org/

Website: http://www.tqsoi.org

To empower young people to initiate and engage in community and creative projects that promote social inclusion, combat urban isolation across all generations, and spark positive societal change.

The TQSOI creates a space for citizens, elected officials, businesses, community organizations and institutions for collaboration, communication of citizens’ preoccupations, a space where individual efforts are combined so that their impact is magnified. The TQSOI facilitates discussion and collaboration so that many different voices can be combined as one, while individual efforts are transformed into collective action in a way that can bring real change and a significant impact. This kind of collaboration is a driving force of social change in modern society, and is necessary to create a sustainable community.

The Yellow Door runs five major programs – the Rabbit Hole Café, Generations, the Coffeehouse, the YD Hive, and Branch Out Creative Mentoring. We are constantly on the look-out to expand our repertoire of programming to better engage youth in the Montreal community. The Generations Project, the Yellow Door’s flagship program, is run by two coordinators and over 250 volunteers who serve close to 300 elderly persons in the downtown Montreal area. We arrange weekly home visits to seniors and accompaniments to hospital and other appointments. A friendly favour service arranges for volunteers to run errands for housebound seniors. Often, volunteers are also asked to offer our clients help with computers and other technology. We regularly organize social events for our volunteers and elderly friends, such as our Social Club, Knitting Club, Book Club, Movie Club and Art Club.

The TQSOI assesses the situation: through citizen’s forums, surveys and focus groups. Afterwards, it creates a space for members of the community to combine their various insights into a collective vision for future improvements. Then it forms committees that work on each of the priorities identified by the community. The actions identified are implemented, and finally, a comprehensive evaluation of the social development action plan is done at the end of the process.
