Journal of the William C. Westmoreland Chapter, Association of the United States Army

The President’s Message – Summer 2012 As the new President of the General Westmoreland Chapter I first want to say that I look forward to the next 23 months. That said I hope to continue with the standard of excellence displayed by our past presidents especially LTC (R) Sharlee Smith and COL (R) Jack Logan. They were the past Presidents I worked with when I became a member of the Executive Committee back in 2006. I attended the new president’s seminar in Washington DC last month. While there I got to meet 38 new Chapter Presidents and the current staff of the National AUSA organization. I was very impressed with the enthusiasm and dedication displayed by all those who gave a presentation and guidance to all of us “new people”. Over the past two months since my election I have given a lot of thought as to what my goals and objectives should be. I will attempt to let all of you know exactly where I want to participate with each of you in leading this chapter. I am meeting with several military leaders and past officers to better formulate my plan. As it now stands here are some of the ideas I want to implement and I welcome all of your thoughts and input. Number one is membership. AUSA is a voice for all military components and we can be very effective only if our numbers are large. Each chapter no matter where it is located has different goals and objectives. Our Chapter is relatively small, currently set at 181 members. Other chapters such as the ones in Texas and back east have membership in excess of 1000 members. This is because they have active duty posts and are able to pull membership from those posts. Nevada has a large National Guard and Reserve bases and which are much smaller and the membership drive is a bit more difficult. I am setting a goal of at least 200 members by the end of my remaining time as president. To do this I intend to meet in person with at least 1/3 of our current membership and make personal appeals to as many members as possible to help recruit members.

I would like to have more such activities like that. Number three is contact and joint activities with California Chapters. This could be in the form of a joint ski trip during the winter months. I held one of these some time ago in my past work position and it turned out great despite the fact the a future Nevada TAG broke her arm. My ideas are not carved in stone. I welcome input from all. Please feel free to email me at [email protected] and use AUSA Member in the subject line. Rather than continue on here I want you all to know I will be doing my best to make the next 2 years a success for this chapter. I will continue to refine my goals and objectives and will share them with you all frequently.

On a final note let us all remember those who have paid the ultiNumber two is changing how we do our membership meetings. mate sacrifice for our Country and way of life. Our community is indeed fortunate to have these outstanding and dedicated officers working with many of the young men and women in our high schools. It is fitting that they received the national recognition they deserve.
