NFL ****BEST BET Denver over *Detroit by 21

Let’s hold off for a while on the Peyton Manning retirement talk. Manning has arm and mobility issues, but he still knows how to win games and can produce big numbers. Manning looked a lot better once Broncos coach Gary Kubiak put him back in his comfort zone, which is the shotgun formation. Denver’s defense is near dominant, while Detroit’s defense has slipped following the departure of Ndamukong Suh and a hip injury to DeAndre Levy, the team’s top linebacker and one of the best in the league. The Lions surrendered 483 yards to the Chargers in Week 1 and 350 yards to the Vikings. Opponents are averaging 24 first downs per game against Detroit. The Broncos should be able to play ball control, too, against the Lions with an improved ground attack, extra preparation time from having last played on Thursday and Manning pitching to a pair of excellent wideouts, Demaryious Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders. Levy’s absence really weakens Detroit because of his ability to defend both the run and pass. The Lions simply are not in Denver’s class. They are several tiers below. Not only has Detroit’s defense been disappointing, but its offense has been down, too. Matthew Stafford hasn’t looked right the past six quarters where the Lions have been outscored by 26 points. Stafford remains inconsistent and erratic. He might have a sore arm after taking a huge beating this past Sunday against the Vikings. Detroit’s supposedly improved ground attack was non-existent versus Minnesota. The Lions’ highly-touted young tight ends have been mostly disappointing. Even Calvin Johnson has looked less explosive as injuries and age are beginning to take a toll on him. The Broncos have a fierce pass rush with Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware to keep making things rough on Stafford. DENVER 37-16.

Cincinnati over *Baltimore by 8

***BEST BET Pittsburgh over *St. Louis by 18

Here’s the difference between these two teams: Pittsburgh has a top-five offense with an aggressive mentality. Ben Roethlisberger makes big plays. Antonio Brown is the top wide receiver in the AFC. The Steelers have put up 400 yards in each of the first two weeks against New England San Francisco. The Rams and Nick Foles have a play not-to-lose mentality. The Redskins have an improved defense, but nobody would ever call it elite. Yet the Rams could only produce one play of more than 20 yards against them this past Sunday. The Rams are getting respect here because of their Week 1 upset win against the Seahawks. The Rams relied more on special teams and trickery than a strong offense. Pittsburgh’s offense is going to be even better now because Le’Veon Bell comes off suspension. Bell set a Steelers team record by gaining 2,215 yards from scrimmage last season. Until burying the 49ers this past week, the Steelers were 0-5 and averaging 16 points when they didn’t have Bell. When they have had Bell, Pittsburgh is 19-10 while averaging 26.7 points. The Rams hope their sputtering ground attack will improve if rookie Todd Gurley is ready to make his season debut. The problem for St. Louis is an extremely young offensive line that is enduring growing pains. Sparked by promising second-year linebacker Ryan Shazier, the Steelers showed defensive improvement against the 49ers, who did much of their damage during garbage time in a 43-18 loss to the Steelers. St. Louis’ defensive strength is a fierce pass rush that has accounted for eight sacks. Roethlisberger counters this by operating a no-huddle offense. Home field is somewhat negated, too, for the Rams. Attendance is down in St. Louis because of the strong talk that the franchise will be leaving for California. PITTSBURGH 35-17.

**PREFERRED

Cincinnati is one of the few NFL teams without a major weakness. The Bengals are among the three best teams in the AFC. The Ravens aren’t in Cincinnati’s class. Yet the Bengals are underdogs because the game is in Baltimore and the 0-2 Ravens are in must-win mode. Cincinnati has lost in the first round of the playoffs each of the past four seasons earning a reputation as big-game chokers. But all the pressure is on Baltimore not the Bengals. Cincinnati can play loose. Each team met the Raiders in Oakland. The Bengals crushed them, 33-14. Oakland didn’t cross midfield until the fourth quarter. The Ravens allowed the Raiders to score on seven of 10 possessions in losing 37-33. The Bengals have that rare combination of stars at wide receiver, A.J. Green, running back, Jeremy Hill, and tight end, Tyler Eifert. The Ravens certainly can’t match that. Andy Dalton never has had this many healthy weapons. That could be why he has yet to throw an interception, or take a sack. Baltimore’s defense has lost its swagger and intimidation factor. The Ravens are 0-2 for the first time since 2005. This past Sunday they played for the first time since 1998 without either Ray Lewis, Ed Reed or Terrell Suggs in their lineup. That’s a lot of lost defensive leadership. CINCINNATI 25-17.

Atlanta over *Dallas by 10

Spend $100 million on Tony Romo and another $70 million on Dez Bryant like Dallas did and there’s not a whole lot of money left to pay for a decent backup quarterback and build depth on defense. Dallas’ defense has put together a pair of “A” games in helping the team go 2-0. Atlanta is 2-0, too. The Falcons, though, have their star quarterback – Matt Ryan – and their superstar wide receiver – Julio Jones – both healthy. That’s the difference here. The Cowboys need their defense to come up with a third consecutive monster performance in the wake of long-term injuries to Romo and Bryant. Minus those two, the Cowboys’ offense can’t hide a bunch of pedestrian runners and wide receivers. Not with Brandon Weeden at quarterback. He now becomes the worst starter in the league. Weeden’s NFL record as a starter is 5-16. His favorite pass is a checkdown. The Falcons have a very good offense. Defensive guru Dan Quinn is upgrading the Falcons’ defense. The Cowboys have to try to contend with this minus their top cornerback, injured Orlando Scandrick, and two best pass rushers, suspended Greg Hardy and injured Randy Gregory. It’s too much to ask. The Cowboys need offense to carry their defense, not the other way around. ATLANTA 27-17.

*CLOSE CALLS *New York Giants over Washington by 3 (Thursday)

*Houston over Tampa Bay by 3

San Diego over *Minnesota by 2

*New York Jets over Philadelphia by 3

Given Tony Romo’s collarbone injury and how poorly the Eagles are playing this NFC East matchup takes on added significance. Despite being beset with defensive injuries, the Giants would be 2-0 instead of 0-2 if not for blowing fourth quarter leads against Dallas and Atlanta. Statistically-speaking, the Redskins could be 2-0 instead of 1-1. They have outgained their two opponents, Dolphins and Rams, 722 yards to 469 while owning time of possession with an average of 37:49 minutes to 22:11. The Giants’ run defense needs the return of injured middle linebacker Jon Beason to help combat the Redskins’ 1-2 running punch of Alfred Morris and Matt Jones. NY GIANTS 23-20. Both teams are young with enough talent to be playoff contenders. Each relies on their superstar. Philip Rivers is healthy again, something he wasn’t during his second half of the season nosedive last year. Adrian Peterson is back running with authority, but still rusty fumbling three times last week. Minnesota has allowed an average of 3.4 sacks during its last 14 games. San Diego is on the road a second consecutive week with an early start time. The Chargers, however, have covered 64 percent during the last 22 times they’ve been a regular season underdog and also are 16-7 ATS when playing out of division, a tribute to their wily coach, Mike McCoy. SAN DIEGO 23-21.

Tampa Bay received a major jolt of confidence upsetting the Saints on the road. Rookie Jameis Winston now must contend with J.J. Watt, who has recorded at least one sack in seven straight games. Watt is a nightmare for the Buccaneers’ vulnerable offensive line. Tampa Bay has committed 17 penalties on offense alone. Yet even if Arian Foster and offensive left tackle Duane Brown return from injury for this game – two huge ifs – the Texans are a difficult team to lay more than a field goal with given their below average quarterback situation. The Texans will be going all out to avoid an 0-3 start, but are 5-12 ATS during their last 17 home games. HOUSTON 22-19. Chip Kelly coached like Vince Lombardi during preseason. Now Kelly is resembling Rich Kotite. The Eagles have never looked as bad, lackluster and disjointed during Kelly’s 34 games as they did during their home loss to the Cowboys last Sunday. Philadelphia’s ground game is broken right now and the Jets are tough to run on. DeMarco Murray has gained just 11 yards rushing on 21 carries. Sam Bradford hasn’t helped with his inconsistency. The Eagles’ linebacker depth may have taken a huge hit, too, with injuries to Mychal Kendricks and Kiko Alonso. The Jets are on a short week, though, after playing Indianapolis on Monday. NY JETS 24-21.

NFL *Carolina over New Orleans by 7

Carolina has won straight-up 13 of the last 14 times it has been a home favorite. If we were sure that Luke Kuechly, the best defensive player in the NFC, was able to play after missing last week with a concussion we likely would move Carolina into at least Preferred status. The Panthers should at least get run-stuffing lineman Star Lotulelei back. The Panthers have rushed for triple digits 13 straight games, the longest active streak in the NFL. The Saints defense is not disruptive, getting neither sacks nor takeaways. Drew Brees looks old at 36 with reduced arm strength, leaving you to wonder if he’s fully healthy. CAROLINA 26-19.

*New England over Jacksonville by 17

Jacksonville upsetting Miami is sure to get Bill Belichick’s attention. It likely keeps the Patriots from experiencing a flat spot after opening with a nationally televised home win against the Steelers and then taking care of business defeating upstart division rival Buffalo. This is Gus Bradley’s best Jacksonville team in his three years. That’s not saying much, though, since the Jaguars are 10-40 in their last 50 games. New England is 13-5-1 ATS during its past 19 games at Gillette Stadium. The Patriots won eight games last season by 22 points or more. Jacksonville got past Miami despite missing three defensive starters. Now they draw Tom Brady. NEW ENGLAND 38-21.

*Cleveland over Oakland by 6

This matchup illustrates the expression lesser of two evils. Cleveland is 2-7 in its last nine games. The Browns are 3-8 ATS the last 11 times they’ve been favored by more than two points going back to late 2012. Their quarterback choice is either 36-year-old Josh McCown – if he’s cleared to play after suffering a concussion opening week – or turnover-prone Johnny Manziel. Travis Benjamin gives Cleveland a big play threat. He’s scored four touchdowns already. Oakland is on a 12-game road losing streak with a 5-7 ATS mark. An early start time is another negative for Oakland. The Raiders are bad at the corners and down both of their starting safeties. CLEVELAND 23-17.

Indianapolis over *Tennessee by 3

The Colts have won the last seven in this series, going 6-0-1 ATS. This is a somewhat tricky spot for the Colts traveling on a short week after having hosted the Jets on Monday night. It’s also the Titans’ first home game. Marcus Mariota has fired six touchdown passes, showing excellent poise and accuracy for a rookie. The Colts have film now on Mariota and Tennessee’s offensive line sprung serious leaks at Cleveland last week allowing seven sacks. Mariota got roughed up and his offense may be minus guard Chance Wormack, who suffered a knee injury. It’s a step up in class, too, for the Titans having opened against Tampa Bay and Cleveland. INDIANAPOLIS 26-23.

*Arizona over San Francisco by 10

Bruce Arians is a coach we don’t care to bet against. Arizona is 14-3 at home under Arians. The Cardinals are 19-7 ATS in their last 26 games. Carson Palmer has won 15 of his last 17 starts, including the last eight. Palmer already has tossed seven touchdown passes. The Cardinals’ offensive line could receive a boost with the possible return of starting guard Mike Iupati and right tackle Bobby Massie. Arizona has the potential to have its best offensive line of the last 10 years. The 49ers dominated the Cardinals under Jim Harbaugh capturing 10 of the last 12 in the series. Now it’s the Cardinals’ turn. ARIZONA 33-23.

*Seattle over Chicago by 20

Early word is that Jay Cutler is likely to miss this game meaning dink-and-dunker Jimmy Clausen will get the start. The 0-2 frustrated Seahawks are likely to bury the Bears no matter who is behind center for Chicago. It’s Seattle’s first home game of the season. No team has a stronger home field advantage. The Seahawks have won 26 of their last 28 games at Century Link Field covering 70 percent of those contests. Chicago is giving up the most points per game in the NFL at 39.5. Not only could Cutler be out, but star wide receiver Alshon Jeffery missed last Sunday with calf and hamstring aliments. SEATTLE 30-10.

Buffalo over *Miami by 1

It’s the battle of the not-good-enough-to-be-a-contender teams. Maybe Miami plays up to its potential for the first time this season. That’s a big maybe. Miami is 8-15 SU in its last 23 home games in September, has been gashed on the ground giving up an average of nearly 160 yards per game rushing in its last eight games and might be

minus offensive left tackle Brandon Albert, who suffered a hamstring injury this past Sunday. Rex Ryan, on the other hand, remains more bluster than production. His quarterback, Tyrod Taylor, will be making only his third NFL start and was sacked eight times by the Patriots last week. BUFFALO 17-16.

*Green Bay over Kansas City by 10 (Monday)

Ordinarily Green Bay might experience a letdown after getting revenge on Seattle this past Sunday night. Fortunately for the Packers they stay at home to play on Monday night where you can’t help but be motivated especially since this is a going to be a special occasion at Lambeau Field celebrating the Packers’ Super Bowl I victory over Kansas City. The extra day may make a difference for injured Eddie Lacy. The Chiefs were out-yarded by winless Houston in their opener and last Thursday blew a lead to Denver in a home loss. They have the pass rushers, however, to bother Aaron Rodgers and they can play ball control if they ride Jamaal Charles. GREEN BAY 31-21.

OVER/UNDER **Under: Buffalo at Miami – The under is 5-0-1 the last six in the series and that streak figures to continue given Tyrod Taylor’s inexperience and Miami’s lackluster ground attack.

Over: Jacksonville at New England – The Patriots are averaging 34 points, while Blake Bortles, T.J. Yeldon and Allen Robinson provide more punch than the Jaguars have previously had.

Over: San Francisco at Arizona

– Carson Palmer is as good as any quarterback with a clean pocket, but the Cardinals’ defense isn’t as reliable as it had been when Todd Bowles was the defensive coordinator.

HISTORICAL TRENDS Washington at New York Giants – The Giants swept the Redskins last season winning 45-14 on the road and winning 24-13 at home. The Giants are 6-1 SU, 4-3 ATS in their last seven home meetings versus the Redskins. The under has cashed six of the past seven times in the series. Pittsburgh at St. Louis – The Steelers blanked the Rams, 27-0, at home in 2011. San Diego at Minnesota – The Chargers trimmed the Vikings, 24-17, at home in 2011. Tampa Bay at Houston – The Texans downed the Buccaneers, 37-9, on the road in 2011. Philadelphia at New York Jets – The Eagles buried the Jets, 45-19, at home in 2011. New Orleans at Carolina – The teams split in 2014 with the Saints winning 2810 on the road and losing 41-10 at home. Jacksonville at New England – The Patriots got past the Jaguars, 23-16, on the road in 2012. Cincinnati at Baltimore – Cincinnati swept Baltimore last season winning 23-16 on the road and winning 27-24 at home. The Ravens are 4-1 SU, 2-2-1 ATS the past five times hosting the Bengals. Oakland at Cleveland – The Browns defeated the Raiders, 23-13, at home last season. Indianapolis at Tennessee – The Colts beat the Titans twice last season, winning 27-10 on the road and 41-17 at home. The Colts are 7-0 SU, 6-0-1 ATS during the past seven games in the series. Atlanta at Dallas – Atlanta beat Dallas, 19-13, at home in 2012. San Francisco at Arizona – The Cardinals beat the 49ers, 23-14, at home last season, but lost 20-17 at San Francisco. The 49ers are 10-2 SU, 8-4 ATS in the last 12 games in the series. Chicago at Seattle – The Seahawks defeated the Bears, 23-17, on the road in 2012. Buffalo at Miami – The teams split last season with the Bills winning, 29-10, at home and losing 22-9 on the road. The under is 5-0-1 during the past six in the series. Denver at Detroit – The Lions rolled past the Broncos, 45-10, on the road in 2011. Kansas City at Green Bay – The Chiefs upset the Packers, 19-14, at home in 2011.

****BEST BET TEXAS A&M over ARKANSAS by 28 (Arlington, TX)

This is technically a home game for Arkansas, which is why they are listed as the bottom team in your schedule, but if one of these teams has a home field advantage, it is arguably Texas A & M. And even if the game were in Fayetteville, we would prefer Kevin Sumlin’s crew. Arkansas was a sexy team in the eyes of preseason forecasters following a season in which they whitewashed LSU and Ole Miss and rode roughshod over Texas in their bowl game. But after opening the season with an easy win over UTEP, things unraveled. A fluky loss to Toledo bled into a 35-24 setback to Texas Tech and there was nothing fluky about that. The Red Raiders moved the ball upstairs and downstairs while averaging 8.4 yards per snap. Four players off last year’s Arkansas defense graduated to the NFL and their replacements haven’t performed at the same level. The Razorbacks also muss RB Jonathan Williams who tallied four touchdowns against Texas Tech last year. Texas A & M wasn’t sharp last week, but still racked up 535 yards vs. Nevada. QB Kyle Allen has elevated his game as a sophomore and DE Myles Garrett, who attended high school here in Arlington, has been a one-man wrecking crew. A force last year as a true freshman, Garrett currently leads the nation in sacks. And we like the addition of DC John Chavis who was wooed away from LSU to shore up a substandard defense. If current form holds, the Aggies will jump more than 50 spots in the final NCAA defensive statistical rankings. TEXAS A & M 44-16.

*Nebraska over Southern Miss by 12

Middle Tennessee State over *Illinois by 7

In their first two starts under popular interim HC Bill Cubit, Illinois crushed Kent State and Western Illinois by a combined 96-3. But we weren’t sold on the Illini who hadn’t had a winning season since Ron Zook left town. In their 52-3 win over Kent State, they averaged a pedestrian 5.3 yards per play. Last week the Illini were brought down to earth, losing 48-14 at North Carolina. Middle Tennessee finished 6-6 last year. The fulcrum of the team was QB Austin Grammer who completed 65.4 percent of his passes and added 442 yards with his feet. Grammer is still around, but he’s been reduced to a back-up behind Brent Stockstill. Yes, Stockstill is the son of MTSU HC Rick Stockstill, but this was not a decision rooted in nepotism. Last week, Stockstill completed 23 of 27 passes for 369 yards and directed seven firsthalf touchdown drives. The victim was Charlotte, a cupcake to be certain, but the previous week the Blue Raiders made a respectable showing at Alabama before succumbing 37-10. The Murfreesboro crew is an easy call. MID TENNESSEE 30-23.

Colorado State over *UTSA by 19

Colorado State opened the Mike Bobo era with a tune-up with Savannah State, a mismatch of such magnitude that the statistics shouldn’t count. In their first real game, the Rams lost in overtime to Minnesota and last week they fell to Colorado. CSU out-yarded the Buffaloes 500-345, but two interceptions were costly. A positive development was the return of Rashard Higgins who missed the Minnesota game with a sore foot. The lone returning Biletnikoff finalist, Higgins has more career receiving yards than any active player. UTSA went toe-to-toe with Arizona in their opener, a head-scratcher as the Roadrunners weren’t very good last year (4-8 SU/ ATS) and returned only six starters, the fewest of any team in the country. Then the roof fell in. In their last two games, UTSA was out-scored 99-17. Last week’s lost to Oklahoma State was the most lopsided in the history of the program. The Roadrunners have had a hard schedule and are stepping down in class, but this is a brittle team that may have trouble getting off the mat. COLORADO STATE 40-21.

*Oregon over Utah by 27

Utah is undefeated, but the Utes have been underwhelming. They defeated Michigan by “7” and Utah State by “10,” but were out-yarded in both games. Last week they defeated Fresno State 45-24, but the score was misleading. Three of their touchdowns came when the offense was off the field. RB Devantae Booker had a strong game, but he had extra motivation. He was headed to Fresno State when the school declared him unqualified, forcing him to go the juco route. Utah depends heavily on Booker, making the offense too one-dimensional, and the defense doesn’t pressure the quarterback nearly as well as last year when the Utes led the nation in sacks. Oregon sat out three starters last week, notably QB Vernon Adams Jr. who was hampered by a broken index finger. In two previous starts vs. Pac 12 teams (Oregon State in 2013; Washington last year) Adams threw 11 touchdown passes. Oregon’s main problem area has been the secondary, but we doubt that Utah can capitalize. UU receivers are averaging only 8.35 yards per catch. OREGON STATE 41-14.

*CLOSE CALLS

We can’t imagine Cincinnati trading points with Memphis if Gunner Kiel (concussion; check status) is a no-go. Memphis dominated the Bearcats last year and enters this contest on a 10-game winning streak. MEMPHIS 38-27.

Boise State over *Virginia by 7 (Friday)

Boise State may be without QB Ryan Finley (ankle), but that may be a blessing in disguise as he’s been erratic and prized recruit Brett Rypien has a bigger upside. Virginia’s near-upset of Notre Dame has distorted this line. BOISE STATE 28-21.

Stanford over *Oregon State by 21 (Friday)

Gary Andersen’s last six teams covered the spot at a 62 percent clip, but we don’t trust Andersen’s current team which is heavily dependent on first-year starters. Stanford has been Jekyl-and-Hide, but on paper the Cardinal has too much experience and too much muscle for Oregon State. STANFORD 35-14.

*Michigan over BYU by 1

On paper Purdue will relish jousting with defensively deficient Bowling Green after locking horns with rugged Virginia Tech. But not so fast my friends. BG does have a soft defense, but the offense puts up points in a flurry, and a sufficient number to overcome a mediocre opponent such as Purdue. In their previous start vs. a Big Ten team, on the road at Maryland in Week 2, BG exploded for 42 points in the second half. QB Matt Johnson, fully recuperated from his hip injury, is even better than he was in 2013 when he led the Falcons to the MAC title. Johnson has at his disposal two running backs with at least 1000 career yards, four receivers with at least 1000 career yards, and he plays behind an OL with five returning starters. No wonder that Johnson leads the nation in passing yards by a substantial margin. Johnson’s Purdue counterpart, Austin Appleby, had a terrible game last week. In his last seven starts, Appleby has been intercepted seven times. No doubt Darryl Hazell wishes he could bench Appleby for former starter Danny Etling, but Etling transferred to LSU. Purdue made headway last year, finishing 3-9 after a 1-11 campaign that was the worst in the history of the program, but the Boilermakers wobbled to the finish line, concluding the season on a 6-game losing streak. Rookie RB Markell Jones has great potential, but isn’t ready to fill the shoes of Akeem Hunt who led the 2014 Boilermakers in rushing and receptions. Purdue is 2-24 SU in their last 26 vs. FBS competition. The beat goes on. BOWLING GREEN 45-26.

**PREFERRED

(Southern Miss plus the points) Southern Miss HC Todd Monken inherited a team that was a train wreck. In Monken’s first season, the losing streak reached 23 games. But the Eagles are no longer road kill. In the season opener, USM opposed Mississippi State, a team that clobbered them 49-0 last year. The Eagles gave the Bulldogs a hard tussle before succumbing 34-16. At last look, four of the top six tacklers were transfers. Three came from stronger programs, specifically Auburn, Miami, and Oklahoma, and the fourth was a juco transfer who initially committed to Oklahoma State. In going the quick fix route, Monken upgraded the talent in a major way. Nebraska may be a bit dispirited after their furious rally at Miami came up short. QB Tommy Armstrong was outstanding and the effort was gallant, but the 36-33 defeat exposed a lot of defensive shortcomings. Mile Riley was the perfect hire for Nebraska from a public relations standpoint, but his record during his two terms at Oregon State (93-90) suggest that the Huskers could have done better. NEBRASKA 45-33.

*Memphis over Cincinnati by 11 (Thursday)

***BEST BET BOWLING GREEN over *PURDUE by 19

BYU ran out of miracles at UCLA but may have found the answer to their stagnant running game in Adam Hine. Michigan had a breather vs. a UNLV team that was forced to deploy a back-up QB who was out of his element. MICHIGAN 27-26.

Army over *Eastern Michigan by 3

Hard-trying but limited Army has lost three games by a combined 10 points. Eastern Michigan squandered a 17-0 lead vs. Ball State, a second straight second-half meltdown. ARMY 27-24.

Nevada over Buffalo* by 2

This is a long trip for the Wolf Pack, but UNR has played better on the road since Chris Ault stepped down. Buffalo’s win at Florida Atlantic was bogus; the Bulls were out-yarded by 200 yards. NEVADA 26-24.

*Michigan State over Central Michigan by 30

Michigan State has scored 30-plus points in 11 straight games. CMU QB Cooper Rush is very good, but he doesn’t have a strong cast of running backs to keep defenders honest. MICHIGAN STATE 37-17.

*Kentucky over Missouri by 4

It’s hard to go against Missouri seeing as how the Tigers have won 11 straight road games, covering the spot in the first 10. But Mizzou’s struggles last week vs. Connecticut tip us toward the host which has been drawing sellout crowds in their spruced-up playpen. KENTUCKY 28-24.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

*Houston over Texas State by 21

*Notre Dame over Massachusetts by 23

Navy over *Connecticut by 12

NC State over *South Alabama by 20

Texas State QB Tyler Jones had a super game vs. Southern Miss, but the shabby TSU defense spoiled the soup. Houston QB Greg Ward Jr. is drawing comparisons to Trevone Boykin. The Cougars were idle last week. Houston 48-27. Connecticut threw a scare into Missouri, but the Huskies were offensively challenged last year and the “O” is still leaking oil. NAVY 31-19.

The Irish are a team without much depth and one has to think that Brian Kelly will be looking to rest his starters at the earliest opportunity with Clemson, Navy, and Southern Cal looming on the horizon. NOTRE DAME 44-21.

Virginia Tech over *East Carolina by 11

We won’t fade NCSU, which has covered the spot in eight of their last nine starts. QB Jacoby Brissett is in excellent form and the Wolfpack have been energized by the return of RB Shadrach Thornton. NC STATE 44-24.

*Penn State over San Diego State by 11

Idaho is facing a wishbone-styled team for the second straight week, but Georgia Southern brings more to the table than Wofford which moved the chains with alacrity vs. Paul Petrino’s flimsy defense. GEORGIA SOUTHERN 47-26.

*Rutgers over Kansas by 13

Marshall’s true frosh QB Chase Litton showed well in his first career start. Litton appears to have a big upside, but the Kent State defense is miles ahead of Norfolk State. MARSHALL 23-17.

*Ohio State over Western Michigan by 26

Mississippi State needs to develop a stronger running game to take the pressure off Zac Prescott, but it’s hard to recommend Auburn which lacks the scoring punch of recent Gus Malzahn teams and was bowled over at LSU. AUBURN 34-33.

*Toledo over Arkansas State by 14

Nick Saban will crack the whip after Alabama’s sloppy performance vs. Ole Miss, but this isn’t the best spot for the Tide who are caught in a sandwich with Georgia up next. The WarHawks, idle last week, have been getting good mileage from RS frosh QB Garrett Smith. ALABAMA 44-10.

Indiana over *Wake Forest by 9

If not for seven turnovers, Charlotte’s 73-14 setback to Middle Tennessee wouldn’t have been quite so lopsided. Speaking of turnovers, FAU has been afflicted with same disease. FLORIDA ATLANTIC 32-21.

ECU defeated the Hokies 28-21 last year as Shane Carden and Cam Worthy were double-trouble for a Tech “D” still celebrating the upset of Ohio State. The circumstances have changed so the lean goes to the avenger. VIRGINIA TECH 31-20. San Diego State hasn’t resembled the team that was picked to win the MWC West, but we can’t trust the Nittany Lions in this price range until Christian Hackenberg shows signs of recapturing his freshman mojo. PENN STATE 28-17. The Rutgers program is a mess right now and Norries Wilson is a sad excuse for an interim coach. However, Charlie Weis left the Kansas program in such bad shape that we can’t build a compelling case for the Jayhawks. RUTGERS 30-17. The Ohio State offense, which had the wow factor at Virginia Tech, has sputtered badly in the interim. All of Western Michigan’s main guns – QB Zach Terrell, RB Jarvion Franklin, WR Daniel Braverman, WR Corey Davis – were outstanding last week, but Murray State was easy meat. OHIO STATE 50-24. Arkansas State put up 70 points on Missouri State and did it without Fredi Knighten whose status for this week is questionable. Without a healthy Knighten we’re disposed toward Toledo. TOLEDO 42-28. In three games, Indiana has moved the chains for 118 first downs. The Hoosiers have way too many weapons for Wake Forest, but IU hosts Ohio State next and that’s a red flag. INDIANA 33-24.

*West Virginia over Maryland by 19

Maryland rebounded from an ugly loss to Bowling Green at the expense of sloppy South Florida. The Terps took WVU to the wire last year, but we won’t fade the Mountaineers who have a red-hot QB in Skyler Howard and will be the fresher team. WEST VIRGINIA 45-26.

Georgia Tech over *Duke by 6

In a reversal of the normal pattern, Duke won the stats last week but came up short on the scoreboard. Georgia Tech’s skein of nine straight covers was shattered at Notre Dame. GEORGIA TECH 34-28.

*Mississippi over Vanderbilt by 24

Perhaps Ole Miss is ripe for a letdown after notching the school’s first win in Tuscaloosa in 27 years, but it’s hard to go against the Rebels with their quick-striking offense. MISSISSIPPI 44-20.

Georgia Southern over *Idaho by 21 Marshall over *Kent State by 6

*Auburn over Mississippi State by 1 *Alabama over UL-Monroe by 34

Florida Atlantic over *Charlotte by 11 TCU over *Texas Tech by 4

The Red Raiders have a new defensive coordinator, the highly respected David Gibbs, and the TCU defense has been riddled by injuries. TCU 49-45.

*UL-Lafayette over Akron by 11

Akron treks to the Pelican State where well-rested UL-L is waiting in the weeds. But the Cajuns haven’t fared well laying doubles and they have a revenge game with Louisiana Tech on deck. UL-LAFAYETTE 28-17.

*South Carolina over Central Florida by 18

South Carolina has depended on back-up QBs who aren’t ready for prime time, but at least the Gamecocks have a few playmakers. SOUTH CAROLINA 28-10.

Appalachian State over *Old Dominion by 12

Appalachian State is well-rested and has something to prove after their tepid performance at Clemson. The ODU offense, never pitiful when Taylor Heinicke was the man under center, was pitiful last week. APPALACHIAN STATE 36-24.

Northern Illinois over *Boston College by 2

The Hawkeyes appear ripe for a letdown after overcoming Pittsburgh with a 57-yard last-second FG in the first night game at Kinnick Stadium since 2012. IOWA 34-14.

The BC defense is legit, but the rebuilt offense, now without starting QB Darius Wade, has severe shortcomings. Northern Illinois has been a very good traveler. The Huskies were 19-1 SU in true road games prior to last week’s gritty performance at Ohio State. NORTHERN ILLINOIS 23-21.

Wyoming did a good job of controlling the tempo at Washington State, but still came up short. The big question is whether Bob Davie’s triple-option will befuddle a defense replete with first-year starters. WYOMING 30-27.

UT QB Jerrod Heard was magnificent last week vs. California, but we won’t fade the Cowboys who appear to have a sturdier defense and are seeking to avenge last year’s 28-7 setback. OKLAHOMA STATE 34-28.

*Iowa over North Texas by 20

*Wyoming over New Mexico by 3

*Louisiana Tech over Florida International by 17

If not for a few bounces, Louisiana Tech would be 3-0. FIU turned heads with a season-opening upset of Central Florida, but in hindsight that was no great achievement. LOUISIANA TECH 38-21.

*Baylor over Rice by 31

Baylor QB Seth Russell figures to have another big game throwing into a Rice secondary with four new starters. However, don’t discount the scrappy, well-coached Owls who are 27-14-1 ATS over the last three-plus seasons. BAYLOR 48-17.

*Florida over Tennessee by 4

Tennessee rebounded from the Oklahoma heartbreaker at the expense of Western Carolina. The Gators have now won the last 10 meetings. FLORIDA 24-20.

Oklahoma State over *Texas by 6 USC over *Arizona State by 10

In last year’s meeting, ASU pulled a rabbit out of the hat, overcoming a big deficit with three touchdowns in the final four minutes, the last coming on a Hail Mary. But the Sun Devils are somewhat more rested and own a better coach. USC 40-30.

*Northwestern over Ball State by 22

In opening 3-0, the Northwestern “D” allowed only one touchdown. That doesn’t appear to bode well for Ball State QB Riley Neal, the true freshman who has overtaken Jack Milas on the depth chart. NORTHWESTERN 30-8.

*Wisconsin over Hawaii by 30

*Minnesota over Ohio by 7

Will UW HC Paul Chryst take the wraps off Corey Clement or will he save Clement for Iowa next week? The Hawaii program is under-funded. The Warriors are flying commercial to Chicago and then car-pooling to Madison. WISCONSIN 47-17.

*Western Kentucky over Miami Ohio by 24

Arizona set school records with 77 points, 792 yards, and 499 rushing yards vs. Northern Arizona. But the Bruins found a way to cool off ‘Zona last year, holding the Wildcats to 7 points, and returned eight defensive starters. UCLA 33-28.

Minnesota QB Mitch Leidner blows hot and cold and was very cold last week, another narrow victory for the Gophers. Ohio is 3-0 after turning back capable SE Louisiana and can hang around with Jerry Kill’s crew. MINNESOTA 30-23. There was a moment during the Wisconsin game in Week 2 where Miami had seven true freshmen on the field on defense. WKU triggerman Brandon Doughty must be licking his chops. WESTERN KENTUCKY 50-26.

LSU over *Syracuse by 28

LSU is potentially flat after avenging last year’s loss to Auburn, but we can’t recommend the Orange who were dented for 520 yards by Central Michigan. LSU 41-13.

UCLA over *Arizona by 5

*Washington over California by 3

Washington QB Jake Browning has had two straight 300-yard games and the Huskies have allowed only one TD in the last 10 quarters. WASHINGTON 33-30.

*San Jose State over Fresno State by 7

We have no interest in either side, but San Jose State has shown a disturbing tendency to run out of gas in the final stanza. SAN JOSE STATE 28-21.

COLLEGE POWER RATINGS Instructions...”Pers” is the personnel rating... in other words a team’s “raw talent”. Then two other factors are to be considered: the Coaching (rated 1 to 5) and the “field” advantage (HF) of the home team, also rated one to five. Subtract the total value of the visitor (P+C) from that of the home club (P+C+HF). If you consider “coaching” important, you’ll profit from this method. Even if you don’t make the calculations, play the better coaches, particularly in games where the line is 7 or less!

DAILY BASEBALL SELECTIONS With rosters having expanded on September 1, teams no longer in contention will be experimenting with rookies.Accordingly, we will focus on selected series involving at least one playoff contender. BEGINNING THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 24

Chicago W. Sox at N.Y. Yankees (4) 24th, 25th, 26th, 27th The Yankees return home after a showdown in Toronto, and this series with the White Sox could provide an opportunity as they hope to prevail as AL East champs. New York has been at its best against lefties (+$620, averaging 5.3 runs per game) and Chicago’s rotation is loaded with southpaws. The White Sox have been a losing proposition all year (-$1100 overall). BEST BET: Yankees vs. lefthanders. BEGINNING FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 25

Pittsburgh at Chicago Cubs (3) 25th, 26th, 27th

Texas at Houston (3) 25th, 26th, 27th The Astros have had a memorable year, but they’ve fallen behind Texas in the AL West and at this point even a wildcard berth is not a sure thing.Texas has been hot down the stretch (7-4, +$255 in their last 11, averaging 5.9 runs per game on offense) and they’ve dominated their intra-state rival in head to head play (12-4, +$1105). They’ve made a fortune away from Arlington (+$2320) and will be hard to pass up at Minute Maid Park. BEST BET: Rangers in all games.

Seattle at L.A. Angels (3) 25th, 26th, 27th It’s been a disappointing year for the Angels, who were unable to duplicate last season’s success, but they are still in contention should some other wildcard hopefuls falter down the stretch. The Mariners rank low statistically (4.15 team ERA, .249 BA) and they’ve been unsuccessful in their meetings with LA (-$325). We’ll avoid staff ace Felix Hernandez (+$370, 3.54 ERA) but the rest of Seattle’s rotation is fair game. BEST BET: Angels unless opposed by F. Hernandez. BEGINNING MONDAY SEPTEMBER 28

A pair of the NL’s best who appear heading to a one game wildcard showdown in October and would each like to host it. Pittsburgh has not fared particularly well against lefties outside of PNC Park, averaging just 3.2 runs per game, and they’ll be facing Chicago’s ace southpaw Jon Lester at Wrigley this weekend (3.46 ERA in 30 starts).Take the home team when he appears. BEST BET: Lester.

Tampa Bay at Toronto (3) 25th, 26th, 27th

Minnesota at Cleveland (3) 28th, 29th, 30th The Twins have turned a profit vs. the Indians (+$375) and they’ve made money in night games outside of Target Field (+$735). Cleveland has lost a fortune here at Progressive Field (-$1700) so play these games accordingly. PREFERRED: Twins in all games.

Detroit at Texas (3) 28th, 29th, 30th

The Blue Jays could still lose the AL East title if they falter down the stretch, and the Rays could be a spoiler at Rogers Centre this weekend. They’ve gotten the best of Toronto in head to head play this year (8-5, +$350) and they’ve made money vs. lefthanders (+$590 overall). They’ll take on David Price & Mark Buehrle as fat underdogs, so there appears to be some excellent value on the visitor when these clubs square off. BEST BET: Rays vs. Price & Buehrle.

Cleveland at Kansas City (3) 25th, 26th, 27th The Indians are just a .500 team but they refuse to fade away and are within striking distance of the final AL wildcard slot. The Royals have been coasting comfortably atop the division for the past couple of months, but they’ve turned a profit vs. the Tribe in head to head play (+$245) and been a powerhouse vs. righties, especially at Kaufman Stadium (32-15, +$1090, averaging 4.9 runs per game). KC would love to hold on to home field throughout the post season, and should take at least 2 out of 3 here. BEST BET: Royals vs. righthanders.

The Rangers took 3 out of 4 when they played at Comerica earlier this season (+$215) and they’ll have a hard time against the Rangers righthanders (-$1445 vs. righties in road night games). A chance for Texas to ice the AL West. PREFERRED: Righthanders vs. the Tigers.

Oakland at L.A. Angels (3) 28th, 29th, 30th The Athletics are only 3-14 vs. lefties on the road (-$1075) and they’ll face some capable ones when they visit Anaheim. Play this series accordingly. PREFERRED: Lefthanders vs. the Athletics. BEGINNING FRIDAY OCTOBER 2

Washington at N.Y. Mets (3) 2nd, 3rd 4th The Nats are finishing strong (7-3, +$290 last 10 days) and if they manage to cut New York’s lead to three games they’ll get this last chance to take the NL East. If not, they still look like a viable road underdog at Citifield. PREFERRED: Nationals in all games.
