SCHOOL CHOICE Students may choose schools in their school zone (East, North, West) or across zones if the school is located with 1.5 miles from their home. Citywide schools are also open to all students, regardless of where they reside in Boston.
Types of Schools and Programs Middle Schools Middle Schools are typically stand alone schools that offer educational opportunities for students in grades six, seven and eight. They are often larger than elementary schools and provide opportunities for students graduating from an elementary school to attend a bigger school with more and new students. Dearborn Middle School (North) Edwards Middle School (North) Frederick Pilot Middle School (West) The Harbor School (East) Irving Middle School (West) Rogers Middle School (East) Timilty Middle School (Citywide) UP Academy Charter School of Boston (Citywide)
K-8 Schools K-8 Schools include middle school grades; however, because students are guaranteed a space in their own school, there are fewer spaces available in these schools for new students. Boston Teachers Union K-8 School (West) Curley K-8 School (West) Dever-McCormack K-8 School (East) Edison K-8 School (North) Eliot K-8 School (North) Gardner Pilot Academy* Greenwood (Sarah) K-8 School (East) Hernández K-8 School (Citywide) Higginson/Lewis K-8 School (West) Hurley K-8 School (North) Jackson-Mann K-8 School (North) Kilmer K-8 School (West) King K-8 School (West) Lee School
Lyndon K-8 School (West) Lyon K-8 School (North) McKay K-8 School (North) Mildred Avenue K-8 School (East) Mission Hill K-8 School (North*) Murphy K-8 School (East) Ohrenberger School (West) Orchard Gardens K-8 School (North) Perry K-8 School (East) Roosevelt K-8 School (East) Tobin K-8 School (North) Umana Academy (North) Warren/Prescott K-8 School (North) Young Achievers Science & Mathematics K-8 School (East)

K-12 and 6-12 Schools A few schools have expanded or merged to create schools with grades six through twelve. A benefit to these schools includes a continuous track through high school. They are as follows: Lyon K-8 School & Lyon High School (North) Quincy Elementary and Quincy Upper Schools (North) TechBoston Academy (East)
Pilot and In-District Charter Schools Pilot schools and BPS in-district charter schools are included in the school district but have control over their own budget, staffing, curriculum, etc. This allows these schools increased flexibility in school staffing and organization. Some of these schools require a separate application process. There are 7 pilot or in-district charter schools at the middle or K-8 level: BTU K-8 School Frederick Middle School Harbor School Hernández K-8 School Lyndon K-8 School Lyon K-10 School (grades 9-10) Mission Hill K-8 School Orchard Gardens K-8 School Quincy Upper School TechBoston Academy UP Academy Young Achievers Science & Math K-8 School
Exam Schools There are three citywide exam schools in the Boston Public Schools. All three schools accept new students for grades seven and nine. The O’Bryant School also accepts a few new students for grade 10. Students are admitted to the exam schools based on a combined score that includes results of an entrance test, called the Independent Schools Entrance Exam (ISEE), and their grade point average (GPA). The ISEE and the GPA are each worth 50% of the score. The ISEE is administered every year in early November. The three exam schools are: Boston Latin School Boston Latin Academy O’Bryant School of Math & Science

ACADEMIC PROGRAMS The AVID Program AVID stands for Advancement via Individual Determination, and is offered in certain schools from grades 4 through 12. In grades 6-12, an AVID elective class is designed to meet the educational and social needs of students “in the middle” – average students who have the potential to succeed in college through hard work and individual determination. Some special components of AVID include:
A strong academic focus and rigorous course of study. A solid academic and social support network that expects and rewards hard work, perseverance, and academic achievement. A tutorial component – AVID trained tutors are often college-age
AVID is available at these schools:
Harbor School Higginson/Lewis K-8 School Irving Middle School King K-8 School Murphy K-8 School Ohrenberger School Quincy Upper School Rogers Middle School Timilty Middle School Tobin K-8 School Umana/Alighieri K-8 School
Advanced Work Class (AWC) Advanced Work Class is a full-time program for students in grades four, five and six that provides an accelerated academic curriculum for highly motivated and academically capable students. Coursework is challenging and students are expected to complete more school work and more home study. New sixth grade students are invited to AWC based on results of a standardized test taken in the fall of fifth grade. This test is the Terra Nova 3, Basic Survey Test or, for native Spanish speakers, the SUPERA test. Schools with grade six AWC programs include: Curley K-8 School Dearborn Middle School Edison K-8 School Irving Middle School Jackson/Mann K-8 School King K-8 School Lee School McCormack Middle School Murphy K-8 School Ohrenberger School Quincy Upper School Rogers Middle School Timilty Middle School Umana/Alighieri K-8 School

School Name
School Name
Important questions to consider What are the school’s student achievement data, such as MCAS results, AYP status, promotion and graduation rates, and percentage of graduates going on to college? Does the school have a special admissions process? (All of BPS’s exam schools and some of the small schools do.) What is the school’s curriculum and style of teaching? Which special education programs, language programs, Advanced Placement (AP) and honors courses are available? What services and programs are available for students who need extra academic support or counseling? Where is the school located? (High school students who attend schools more than 2 miles from home receive MBTA passes.) What are the opportunities for parent involvement? What is the size of the school? What is the school’s environment like? What are the school’s hours? What athletic programs, clubs, tutoring, and/or other afterschool activities does the school have? What are the facilities like? Is there a gym, library, pool, auditorium, music and art studios? How diverse are the students and faculty? Add your own questions here.

What makes your school unique?
Our collective focus on whole school-whole child aims to support our students’ academic and social/emotional needs. We have an extensive Student Support Team that includes an outstanding guidance counselor with personal connections to the greater Jamaica Plain community, the Rally Program, and the Curley Consortium. We also have access to a wide range of school-based and community-based professional counseling services. Our school newspaper, The Curley Chronicle, is one component of our amazing arts and enrichment department. Hyde Square Task Force’s Learn Through Dance professional dancers enhance our in-school dance program. Our music and instrumental program is strengthened by our VH-1 Save the Music grant and through our partnership with Community Music. Our theatre and visual arts program puts on a variety of exciting shows and performances throughout the year. In partnership with Mayor Thomas M. Menino and the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC), we are happy to be a part of the Healthy Meals Initiative. The new program features a professional chef cooking at our school, and educates our cafeteria manager about healthier ways to prepare and present meals that are both nutritious and delicious.
Special opportunities for students:
As a Step-Up school, we have the great fortune of having formalized partnerships with area universities to supplement our academic programming. Students from Northeastern University visit the school regularly to provide individual and wholeclass support. Our students also have access to the University of Massachusetts Summer Program, Northeastern University’s Summer Program, Alvin Ailey Camp, and our before-school academic program. Our students also have the opportunity to visit local universities to explore and participate in hands-on, experiential learning. One of these opportunities includes a visit to Harvard Medical School. To further support our students’ academic achievement, we have partnered with Outward Bound and Boston Harbor Islands/Thompson Island to provide our students with multi-day and overnight experiential learning experiences. For the past several years, we have taken a select group of students to St. Croix, US Virgin Islands during school vacation to participate in service learning projects with the Boys and Girls Club. Activities such as this not only support students’ individual personal growth, but also enhance our overall school climate and community.
After-school/extra-curricular and sports opportunities:
The Curley offers a variety of homework initiatives, SES tutoring, HOPE tutoring and mentoring program for grades 5 & 6, DARE Dance for grade 5, exam school preparation, and intramural sports that include: basketball, soccer, and track and field. School Characteristics
Full inclusion school that offers a research and standards based curriculum with a strong emphasis on rigor, goal setting, and a college preparatory path. 2012-2013 we expanded our school to include a ninth grade class Unique collaboration and partnership with the Dr. William Henderson Elementary School that includes the development of an exemplary full inclusion middle school program at the Harbor Pilot School. The latest technologies to provide adaptive learning and differentiated instruction for all students.
The Harbor Pilot Middle School is a part of the Boston Public School district with approximately 300 students in grades six through nine. We have an innovative 21 st century approach to education. As a turnaround school, we have faculty members with extensive expertise and experience. The Harbor Pilot Middle School has a clear vision of success and high expectations for all staff and students. Our school’s rigorous course design is based on the most contemporary research and standards-based curriculum. We have the most up-to-date textbooks in all subject areas, and a state-of-the-art technology initiative with HP ThinkClient workstations in every classroom, a thirty seat computer and research laboratory, and a full multimedia library. The Harbor School’s educational philosophy is that students are taught to work collaboratively through inquiry-based learning. Through guided practice students learn to interact effectively and take responsibility for each other’s learning while engaged in higher order thinking skills. Being a full inclusion school, our systemic approach is the use an RTI (Response to Intervention) three tier model while differentiating instruction, and using adaptive technologies for all students according to their individual student data profiles. Our educators are trained to implement the AVID program, which provides foundational support to each student in organizational skills, daily homework expectations, Cornell Note taking, time management, Socratic Seminars, and goal setting on the path for college success. Motivation in the AVID program ensures that our students will succeed in a rigorous curriculum, increase their enrollment in four year colleges, and become well educated, responsible participants and leaders in our society. Parents are vital to the success of the school, and we ask that parents help reinforce the learning process. Parents should sign agenda books daily, review all progress reports, and contact their teachers for conferences. We require that Harbor students read 30-45 minutes each night. Families have a voice in school governance through the parent council and the Governing Board, and we strongly encourage their involvement in their child’s education. We offer a range of after-school programs tailored to meet individual student and family needs including: academic support, MCAS prep, social/emotional groups, and athletic groups. The resources of the Harbor School are greatly enhanced through our distinctive partnerships with the Neighborhood House Charter School, UMass Boston, Thompson Island Outward Bound Education Center, Dotwell, Very Special Arts of Massachusetts through BPS Arts Expansion Fund, City Year, Project DEEP, Best Buddies, and the Boston Inclusive Network.
Student Body There are approximately 300 students enrolled at the Harbor School. In 2012-2013, 64% of the students are African American, 23% are Hispanic, 8% are White, 3% are Asian, and 2% are other. We have a Special Education population of 34%.

Students currently in fifth grade at the Hernández are guaranteed a seat in the 6th grade. Students K1-8 wishing to enter the school must apply during registration in January and will be on the waiting list. Grades K1-2 are assigned by the district. Once it is determined how many seats are available in grades 3-8 the school’s Community Field Coordinator will contact you in the order your name appears on the waiting list. The students will be given a reading comprehension benchmark test (both Spanish and English) to determine ability to work in both languages. If your child meets the criteria then he/she would be assigned to the available seat.
What makes our school unique?
We are a dual language school (English/Spanish): the first in the city of Boston (1970) and in the state of Massachusetts. Every student is taught in both English and Spanish regardless of their home language. Students are engaged in thematic studies, which vary according to the grade and the national standards that must be met. We are a Discovery School. This allows us to have different curriculum options (not the same texts, tests or schedules) that are the norm in the school system. We work cooperatively in teams teaching to meet the Whole School Improvement Plan. Starting in 2012, the Margarita Muñiz Academy (High School) opened its doors to all high school students who are learning in a dual language school or who have proficiency in both languages. All our 8 th graders will have a guaranteed seat available if they choose MMA. Currently there are 6 Teachers of the Year and 2 Massachusetts Teachers of the Year teaching at our school. The staff is experienced, innovative and demand excellence from themselves as well as their students. We also have a low turnover among staff allowing stability in planning long-term curricular goals. The Arts are integrated throughout the curriculum by both music/movement specialists and classroom teachers in collaboration with one another. The Hernández community embraces your family so that the needs of each child are met.

[email protected] 617-635-8212 Average class size: 22 (K2 -2) ; 25 (3-5) 28 (6-8) What makes our school special? The Martin Luther King, Jr. K-8 School exemplifies the true meaning of Dr. King’s dream. Students are not judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. We celebrate and teach a different character trait each month to help build students’ self-esteem. To achieve academic success, we must first teach responsibility and productivity. Students are taught to serve the school and the community for the common good. How do we engage families in our school community? Families are welcome to visit the school. We are continuing “Wonderful Wednesdays” which originated from the Dickerman School. On those days, parents visit classrooms and witness daily instruction. Students in grades 2-8 have agenda books for homework and communication between school and home. A school compact is signed by the Principal/Teacher/Parent/Student to assist with academic and family success. How are we preparing our students for educational success? All students in grades 1 - 2 receive an additional 40 minutes of Math and Reading Enrichment each week. Resource Room teachers team with Regular Ed teachers for Math and ELA in grades 3-5. Students in grades 1 - 5 receive 90 minutes for Reading and 70 minutes for Math each day. Grades 6 - 8 have 80 minute schedule blocks. All students receive 40 minutes of specialist classes (Art, Computer, Physical Education, Music, and Performing Arts). Mandatory uniform policy: White or Ash Grey buttoned polo shirt with collar or white dress shirt with collar. Black pants/skirt. Pants must be worn above the hips with a “plain belt”. Any special application processes: Josiah Quincy Upper (JQUS) is conceptually part of a K-12 complex that includes Josiah Quincy Elementary School (JQES). Students at the completion of grade 5 at JQES automatically move up to JQUS.
What makes your school unique? We regard JQUS as a permanent work in progress. School-based curriculum teams are always searching for curricula and strategies in all subjects to improve the quality of the school’s instructional programs. Currently, teachers are immersed in infusing the IB Diploma Program in grades 11 and 12 and planning for the formal introduction of the IB Middle Program in grades 6-10. Teachers also assume significant leadership roles in school decision making. Students are assigned to advisory groups that meet regularly with teacher leaders. The school has a longer school day four days a week. Teachers participate weekly in meetings of grade teams and/or subject teams. We have a strong college counseling program. JQUS also offers extensive after school activities. Quincy Upper School is authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP) to students in grades 11-12. We expect to receive approval in 20112012 of a proposal we submitted to the International Baccalaureate for formal authorization to offer IB’s Middle Years Program (MYP) for grades 6-10. We are at this time already conducting this program informally based on our proposal to IBO.

UP Academy is a high-performing public, tuition-free, college preparatory middle school (grades 6-8). Our school aims to ensure all students acquire the knowledge, skills, and strength of character necessary to succeed on the path to college and to achieve their full potential. Our school program is modeled on the highest-performing urban public schools in the United States. Our team believes that any student can rapidly approach grade-level proficiency given the right support system. At UP Academy, we offer: -
Relentlessly high, consistent academic and behavioral expectations. UP Academy scholars know exactly what is expected of them in and out of the classroom. These school-wide systems have helped us create a supportive and safe environment where staff can work relentlessly to help our students reach their full potential.
-
Open lines of communication between school and family. Families can expect a weekly call from their child’s advisor to discuss student performance and progress. All students bring home a weekly report detailing grades, homework completion, and behaviors.
-
Rigorous, standards-based curriculum, instruction, and assessments. Our educational program is designed to help students master core basic content and skills that will prepare them for success at a college preparatory high school program.
-
A wide-reaching network of supports for all students, including Special Education students and English Language Learners. Our school employs an extensive network of whole-school and individualized supports to catch struggling students before they fall behind. When a student is not finding success at our school, we will seek to identify the underlying skill deficiency and then provide systematic supports to address the issue.
-
An obsession with regularly and effectively using data. We regularly analyze academic assessment data to understand which concepts students have and have not mastered, using this analysis to build tutoring plans and to make adjustments to our program. Data detailing student performance on nonacademic goals also drives individual and school-wide improvements.
-
An atmosphere of enthusiasm and joy. Our program is designed to ensure that teaching and learning become exciting and fun.
Other school features include the following: Required school uniforms Transportation guaranteed to all students who live more than 1.5 miles away from the student. Weekly art, music, and fitness classes Enrichment program (e.g., athletics, drama) on Fridays for all students Afterschool homework club for some students Saturday Math Club option for some students Football & basketball teams ISEE and SSAT prep for 8th grade students Full-time High School Placement Manager As required by state law, our enrollment will be determined by public lottery.
