Power Redundancy •
Supports Common Slot power supply − Common slot – 1200W, 750W, 460W options − Allows you to choose right sized power supply for your configuration and run higher up the efficiency curve.
•
Three implementations available for shared power supplies: − No Redundancy • •
Run entire z6000 chassis with 1 power supply Combination of both trays need to fit in the power envelop of the power supply
− Full AC/DC redundancy • •
Using 2 power supplies to run z6000 chassis If one power supply fails and the servers fit in the remaining power supply’s power envelop, servers will continue to run with no interruption
− AC redundancy w/ throttling • •
32
2/1/2010
Using 2 Power supplies to run z6000 chassis If one power supply fails and the total power used by the server trays is greater than the remaining power supply, the servers will throttle down to fit in the remaining power supply’s power envelop

BladeVault™ in the open office: UK National School of Government
•
•
•
The National School of Government, a UK Government department, selected Kell Systems BladeVault to house its HP BladeSystem c3000 directly in a working office, along with a UPS, tape storage, network disc arrays, a network switch and an additional rack-form factor server. Rather than building a traditional server room, BladeVault was chosen as a fast-deployed, tidy infrastructure solution that didn’t require expensive and disruptive building works. And in an educational campus with multiple buildings, the portability of BladeVault was attractive, allowing great flexibility if buildings need to be repurposed or floor plans changed in the future. “The soundproofing is so effective that we have staff working just 2 metres away from the fully configured installation,” says Martin Craig, Head of Networking for the National School of Government. He adds, “We’d envisaged erecting a partition between the BladeVault and the working office, but now it’s arrived and is fully kitted out it’s just not needed. The cabinet runs very quietly and looks great. The staff don’t even notice it’s there.”

Intel Xeon 5500 Sequence processor Turbo Mode Description 3 Methods of Control
CPU operates at higher-than-stated frequency when operating below power and thermal design points 1. Off: CPU operates only at rated frequency 2. Automatic: OS requests higher perf state, CPU determines turbo frequency (recommended) 3. Manual: • User can manually disable cores (reboot required) via BIOS • Less cores means more likely turbo will happen

Nehalem Virtualization Intel® Virtualization Technology (Intel VT-x) continues to offer investment protection and infrastructure flexibility with multi-generation VM migration across the full range of 32-bit and 64-bit configurations, enabling bigger VM pools Intel® Virtualization Technology for Connectivity (Intel® VT-c) provides hardware-assisted I/O that accelerates network performance and simplifies VM migration. Intel® Virtualization Technology for Directed I/O (Intel® VT-d) helps speed data movement and eliminates much of the performance overhead by giving designated VMs their own dedicated I/O devices, reducing the overhead of the VM migration in managing I/O traffic. Intel VT with Intel FlexMigration and Intel FlexPriority also gives IT more choice in managing and allocating virtualized workloads across new and existing platforms. source:www.intel.com

NUMA (Linear memory accessing ) ( QPI )
•
Non-Uniform Memory Access (NUMA) is a memory design that is used in a system with multi-processors, where the memory access time depends on the memory location relative to a processor.
•
This type of Non-Uniform Memory Access architecture is a special type of memory organization in multi-processor AMD Opteron platforms and Intel® Nehalem
•
NUMA attempts to address the issue of latency in the memory by providing a separate memory for each processor, avoiding the performance hit when several processors attempt to address the same memory.
•
The total memory attached to all the processors is divided into 4-KB segments. In case of linear addressing (NUMA), consecutive 4-KB segments are on the same node
SUMA - Node Interleaving
•
For those applications that cannot take advantage of the NUMA architecture, the performance may be improved by activating the node interleaving (SUMA), which is similar to the SMP architecture.
•
System administrators can activate the node interleaving using the HP ROM-Based Setup Utility.
•
Node interleaving or SUMA breaks memory into 4-KB addressable entities
•
Addressing starts with address 0 on node 0
•
Sequential addresses through address 4095 are assigned to node 0, addresses 4096 through 8191 to node 1, addresses 8192 through 12287 to node 2, and addresses 12888 through 16383 to node 3.
•
Address 16384 is assigned to node 0, and the process continues until all memory has been assigned in this fashion.
Applications ? Applications that do not benefit from node interleaving To take advantage of NUMA architecture, the operating system and the applications that run on the system must assign memory on a per-thread basis. In general, a NUMA-aware operating system such as Microsoft Windows and a NUMA-aware application such as Microsoft SQL Server will benefit from the NUMA organization. A NUMA-aware operating system and applications that allocate and de-allocate memory at the thread level will benefit from the NUMA organization because the allocation and the thread will have a tendency to run on the same node.
Applications that benefit from node Interleaving If an application uses a common allocation thread, it will benefit from node interleaving.

What is TPM? – Trusted Platform Module − − − −
TPM is a chip that stores keys, passwords and digital certificates. This chip resides on the motherboard of a computing devise The key data is protected from external software attack of physical attack. For Security purposes, Digital signature and key exchange are protected through the secure TCG subsystem. − Access to data and secrets in a platform is denied if the boot sequence is not as expected. − Critical applications such as email, secure web access and local protection of data are thereby made more secure.

G6 Power Profiles
HP Power Profile provides a simple mechanism for users to configure the power management options of their system based on their tolerance to power versus performance without having to individually configure each option.
HP ProLiant Power Regulator
HP Power Regulator HP Dynamic Power Savings Mode • Automatically varies processor speed and power usage based on processor use • Reduces overall power consumption with little or no impact to performance • Does not require OS support HP Static Low Power Mode • Reduces processor speed and power usage • Guarantees a lower maximum power usage for the system • The impact on performance is greater for environments with higher processor utilization. HP Static High Performance Mode • Processors run in the maximum power and performance state, regardless of the OS power management policy. OS Control Mode • Processors run in the maximum power and performance state, unless the OS enables a power management policy.
Observing Power State
Redundant Power Supply Mode •
Balanced mode, both power supplies provide power equally. This mode can result in wasted power since power supplies are not at their most efficient at low loads
•
High Efficiency mode means the system will only use one power supply until system load exceeds a certain threshold. The second power supply stays online maintaining redundancy but does not supply power until needed. Either selection still provides full power redundancy

For example, take a 2-processor, 64GB configuration using 8x8GB DIMMs. Four DIMMs will be put onto each processor: •
Performance will be highest in Region 1, where the memory spans 3 memory channels.
•
Performance will be worse in Region 2, where the memory is only on the first channel; that is, on the memory in the 4th DIMM of each processor. In addition, this memory channel will also have increased latency

Memory Protection Technologies Advanced ECC HP's term "Advanced ECC" means that the server corrects multi-bit errors, how many bits depends on the implementation. Typically, this is up to a 4-bit error within a nibble. Multi-bit errors that go across nibble boundaries, but remain within two nibbles will all be detected. Address Parity With RDIMMs the memory controller drives the address signals, command signals and a parity bit to a common register on the DIMM. The register re-drives the address and command signals to each DRAM chip on the DIMM. The register calculates the parity of the address and command signals and compares it to the parity bit it received. If there is a difference, it will signal the memory controller that there was an address parity error. The system will then shutdown to prevent silent data corruption. This feature is only available with RDIMMs. Memory Mirroring Mirrored memory mode is a fault-tolerant memory option that provides a higher level of availability than Advanced ECC protection. Mirrored Memory mode provides full protection against any single-bit and multi-bit errors. Mirrored Memory mode reduces the amount of memory available to the operating system by 50 percent since only one of the two populated channels provides data. Lock Step Mode Lockstep memory mode uses two memory channels at a time and provides an even higher level of protection. In lockstep mode, two channels operate as a single channel—each write and read operation moves a data word two channels wide. The cache line is split across both channels to provide 2x 8-bit error detection and 8bit error correction within a single DRAM. In three-channel memory systems including servers based on the Intel Xeon 5500 series processors, the third channel is unused and left unpopulated.
