Pumping and drainage systems for Below Ground Waterproofing

11

Introduction John Newton and Company have sold SYSTEM 500, a cavity drain waterproofing system since 1990. The system is designed to control and remove water from the structure. Water can be removed in many ways: The most common method is to create drainage channels within the slab leading to a sump chamber. A pump would then discharge the water out from the structure. During consultation with our approved contractors, it became apparent that SYSTEM 500 could be improved upon if specifically designed sump chambers were available, as well as alternative methods of draining water from the system. In response to this dialogue, John Newton & Company have recently added a range of specifically designed pumps, pumping systems, and drainage conduits to enable the waterproofing contractor to design an effective system no matter what problem they are faced with. Intensive and ongoing training of these contractors ensures correct specification and installation of these new ‘state of the art’ systems.

THE PROBLEM

THE SOLUTION

Feedback from contractors indicated that forming a sump chamber in an existing or new slab was problematic, in that often the forming was carried out by onsite ground workers who invariably incorrectly positioned the pump discharge line and power conduit, or in many cases forgot about them altogether. Also contractors found it difficult to find an acceptable sump lid that could be used with the variety of floor finishes above the System 500 laid to the floor; for instance no lid was available at the same thickness as 18mm T&G chipboard.

The new range of PUMPING & DRAINAGE products allow the contractor to overcome all of the problems over the page.

Also, it was not always possible to drain water across the floor below the SYSTEM 500 because of internal abutting walls, the size of the structure, or simply because only one or two walls were earth retaining. In some instances, adding the SYSTEM 500 and the finish above the membrane added an unacceptable thickness to the floor height. 12

The TITAN pump system has a lid that can be set to match any finish over the SYSTEM 500, and being plastic, holes for the discharge lines and conduit can be cut during pump installation. The TITAN PLUS even has a 12V battery back up pump so that protection continues even in the event of mains power failure.

The photo shows a TITAN pump system during installation. The three pipes entering the TITAN are for power for the pump, the discharge line, and the connection between the BASEDRAIN and the TITAN chamber via a BASEDRAIN CONNECTOR. Once the NEWTON 500 was installed to the walls and the BASEDRAIN ring completed, the TITAN and BASEDRAIN was concreted in with the laying of the new slab.

BASEDRAIN and BASEBOARD drainage conduits ensure that water is moved at the wall/floor junction only, the point of ingress to the majority of structures. BASEDRAIN moves water below the finished floor level enabling a complete system to be installed without adding to the original floor height. BASEBOARD moves water above the finished floor when cutting channels to the floor is not an option.

NP1 & NP3 Undoubtedly two of the best sump pumps available today, with the NEWTON NP1 and NEWTON NP3 you can be confident that your waterproofing system has a pump of proven reliability. Both pumps have vertical float switches allowing them to be placed within the narrowest of chambers without fear of the switch snagging. The heart of both our TITAN and TITAN PLUS systems, we are confident that you will experience years of reliable performance from these units. The NEWTON NP3 is our largest selling pump and has proven to be extremely reliable. Very quiet and with low power use, the NP3 is suitable for light to medium water discharge. 360mm

The durable NEWTON NP1 is recommended when greater performance is required or where lime scale deposits are a problem. Made from epoxy coated high grade cast iron, these pumps will run and run in even the most demanding of situations.

inc charger

Specifically designed 12V battery back up pumping system The charger monitors battery and sounds alarm if it is unable to retain charge or the 12V pump activates NEWTON TITAN PLUS includes Basin & Lid, NP3 pump, AL1 ALARM, 12V pump with check valve, ‘T’ connector and float switch, Charger/monitor, Battery Box and Battery.

Charger/Monitor connected to TITAN PLUS and Battery

Pumps for a total of 7 hours with 110 Amp Hour battery

Not to be be confused with cheaper alternatives recently introduced, this is the World’s biggest selling 12V battery back up pump system, imported from the USA and modified and re-certified for use in the UK. When a battery pump is required because of worries over mains power failure, look no further than the NEWTON NP12. Easy to install, the NP12 can be retro fitted to existing pump installations, simply fitting in-line with the existing pump discharge line. The charger/monitor is specifically designed for this task and constantly monitors the switching of the 12V pump as well as the ability of the battery to retain a charge. Sold with a huge 110 Amp Hour deep cycle battery housed within its smart purpose made box, the NP12 will discharge the sump basin over L450 times on one charge, more than enough for most power cuts experienced in the UK.

BASEDRAIN

BASEDRAIN can be routed through internal abutting walls to reduce overall contract cost.

BASEDRAIN installed to existing slab should sit above 20mm stone.

Here BASEDRAIN sits on a new slab with insulation abutting ready for floor membrane.

Suitable for both new-build and remedial works to existing structures, BASEDRAIN is an ingenious drainage conduit designed to sit in the floor at the junction with the wall; the point of water ingress in the majority of structures. Water entering the basement at this critical junction is intercepted by the BASEDRAIN and the water is diverted to available drainage or a TITAN pumping system. 79mm Instead of moving water across the floor, BASEDRAIN collects water from the NEWTON 108mm 500 to the wall and disperses it more efficiently 48mm around the perimeter of the structure. This is very useful if it is difficult or impossible to take the SYSTEM 500 over the floor. It also allows SYTEM 500 to be used in isolation on the wall causing concern, without having to take the system over all the walls and the floor. Available headroom is often critical in basements, and substantial savings can be made by removing the floor membrane from the scheme. The insertion of BASEDRAIN is simply mitered at corners and JETTING EYES gives a fully maintainable system better in compliance with BS8102. should be set level with packing or stone.

BASEBOARD

3.

Exclusive in the UK to John Newton & Company, BASEBOARD is a revolutionary product manufactured in the USA. When a basement leaks, it invariably does so at the junction between wall and floor. Water ingress is captured within the hollow BASEBOARD section and diverted to available drainage or a TITAN pump system. BASEBOARD is not suitable for all instances of water ingress, but on good quality screeds and slabs offers a less destructive alternative to BASEDRAIN during remedial works to existing properties. Thousands of properties a year are successfully treated with BASEBOARD in the USA.

4.

18

This particular property had been tanked twice in a well known cementitious tanking membrane, and had flooded after both installations. The block protection wall in front of the retaining wall was filling up with water ingressing through the tanking and was seeping into the living environment. 18mm holes were drilled through the block wall at 100mm centers 40mm up from the floor to relieve the water pressure building up in the cavity and the released water is now diverted via the BASEDRAIN into a TITAN pumping system and discharged out of the structure.
