Week 8 Term 2

Kia Ora Koutou. Nga mihi kia koutou

FROM THE PRINCIPAL All classes are involved in PrEP (Primary Enterprise Programme) this term, and there is a hive of activity amongst classes with children marketing, and producing products for PrEP Market Day. The Primary Enterprise Programme gives our students the opportunity to run their own “businesses” in a minimarket society which provides real-life experience in a safe and nurturing environment. This Inquiry learning integrates all areas of the curriculum which includes maths, reading and writing, the Arts and technology.

CURIOSITY - WEST END SCHOOL BELIEFS Children are such curious creatures. They explore, question, and wonder, and by doing so, learn. From the moment of birth, humans are drawn to new things. When we are curious about something new, we want to explore it. And while exploring we discover. At West End we believe that children need to have every opportunity to “be curious”. This is one of the beliefs we have in Developing Active Learners.

  

are engaged take risks self manage

MATARIKI Children in Te wao Nui o Tane celebrated Matariki last Friday with waiata, karakia and a shared lunch. They were entertained by the drama group who prepared a movie re-enacting the legend of Matariki. “Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars also known as the Pleiades. It rises in mid-winter – late May or early June. For Māori, it heralds the start of a new year. Matariki literally means the 'eyes of god' (mata ariki) or 'little eyes' (mata riki). It occurs at the end of the harvest season. It was a time when storage houses (pātaka kai) were filled with food, and the land was at its most unproductive. The cultivated kūmara (sweet potato) had been gathered and stored in specially prepared pits to ensure a year round supply. Matariki is a good time to reflect on your place in the world, to reawaken old skills or try out new ones and to set new goals.” The Māori Language Commission
