YKIP is extremely grateful for all of the support that the Annika Linden Foundation and Mitrais has given us so that we are able to deliver educational assistance to disadvantaged children, allowing them to obtain a better education which results in a better quality of life.

This year, ALF continues their support of 269 Kembali scholars, 2 KIDS scholars, 4 University Scholars and the administration cost of YKIP. With almost 10 years of history as a major sponsor of and partner with YKIP and several other of Bali's major non profit organizations, the Annika Linden Foundation is refocusing its efforts to identify best practices and leadership across Bali's entire non profit and charity sector. The Annika Linden Centre (pictured above), currently under construction and opening in October 2012, is a centre of excellence for non profit work and charity serving all non profit organizations -- and donors -- in Bali. The Centre will be a "one stop shop" where poor families can go to access multiple non profit services and learn about other services available to them. Also, non profit organizations can gather at the centre to connect and coordinate with each other. The Centre, as a hub of non profit activity, will also serve as a "one stop shop" for donors looking for information on their options for donations in Bali. We invite you to learn more by getting in touch with us: please visit www.alfoundation.org or email [email protected].

2012 sees Mitrais entering its 10th year of involvement in supporting YKIP activities. Starting from 2002 when Mitrais staff were involved in the Bali Bombings relief action to more extended support up until today, including the provision of office space, accounting, IT, internet and other volunteer services. Senior Mitrais employees are on YKIP management board, cementing an already close bond between the two organizations. As Mitrais continues to strengthen its commitment to support YKIP as part of its corporate fundamental principle to give something back to the society in which Mitrais operates, this year, a new CSR Manager of Mitrais has been appointed to provide daily assistance in managing YKIP's program on behalf of the YKIP management board. Please visit www.mitrais.com for further information.

Greetings from YKIP Management Board Dear Readers, I just realized how time flies and that it is already a year since I accepted the position of Ketua Yayasan (Head of Management Board of YKIP) in May last year and here is my first greetings to all YKIP supporters. My association with YKIP first started with its establishment in 2002 and I have previously been Secretary and also Treasurer. This is an honorary position as I am also running the HR & Corporate Affairs Division for Mitrais. I feel very honored by the trust given to me by the Mitrais Board to take up this role. I would also like to express my great appreciation to my predecessor, Mr. David Magson and Mrs. Rucina Ballinger for their continuous support and to the founder of YKIP Mrs. Ari Murti and Mr. Josef Rosarius. In life, there is always opportunities to make things better; hence my first and deepest appreciation goes to YKIP staff for their support, contributions and strong willingness to learn and improve; Ida, Deasy, Fatoni, Farika and Purniati, I salute you all. Furthermore, my sincere appreciation goes to our major donor ALF, Monica & Ray Sanderson, the Heidi Circle, Greg and Nella Evans and many other donors which I can‟t list here but you will find on our website. Without their continuous support, our mission could not be accomplished. On this special occasion, I am very proud to share the news that 30 of the Kembali scholars graduate high school this month and 1 of the KIDS scholars just completed his Bachelor of Law. Congratulations. At this time of the year, we start sending Scholarship renewal sponsorship pledges to all donors, to ensure that at the start of school year 2012/2013 in mid July 2012, the 560 scholars we support can continue to attend school. Here I would also like to convey that there are 50 scholars on the KEMBALI Scholarship program waiting for a donor to sponsor them and 3 scholars, who just graduated from High School with good academic and personal potential, who are also waiting for a helping hand to support their 1 year diploma program under the Vocational Education Program.

Your support through YKIP will help us to improve the lives of the needy in Bali by breaking the cycle of poverty through educational support and services. I do hope that you enjoy reading the news and continue to support YKIP. Yours sincerely, Wiwie Harris Head of Management Board

YKIP Event Career Day Workshop 2012

However, we are aware that most high school students are not wellinformed about the choices they have for higher education and what kind of career opportunities are waiting for them afterwards. Regarding this concern, after the completion of the Senior High School National Exams, YKIP organized a Career Day Workshop on April 26th – 27th 2012. This event aimed to assist our scholars in determining their futures. Unlike usual, this year‟s event was held over two days. On April 26th, at the Hotel Bumi Asih Denpasar, we organized interest and aptitude tests in cooperation with Dasa Bratha Psychological Institution. The test results helped the students identify the most suitable field of study. The activities on April 27th took place at the DEPERINDAG Building Gianyar; we organized Resume Writing and Interview Skills Development. This activity was particularly aimed to make our Kembali scholars better prepared when applying for a job.

Thirty of our Kembali scholars as well as three of our KIDS scholars are in 12th grade now and will be graduating senior high school this year.

While many of their peers may have decided which institution of higher education they will be going to after graduation, our Kembali scholars, who come from an economically disadvantaged family, do not have many choices. For them pursuing a higher level of education is definitely not an option. Under the obligation to contribute to their family income, joining the work force becomes their top priority. Unfortunately, due to the competitiveness of today‟s job market, there are not many opportunities for employment for a senior high school graduate. Thus we are hoping that the soft skill development would help them to prepare themselves to compete in the job market.

We salute them for their hard work and we hope they will inspire other scholars to finish their education.

We are happy to share that the workshop was successful and all of the participants felt it was very helpful and inspiring.

Kembali Scholarship Program Distribution The Kembali team distributed school supplies, vitamins, school fees and allowances in the third quarter (January to March) and fourth quarter (April to June) of the existing 2011/2012 academic year. These events were organized in 12 areas: Tegalalang, Gianyar, Sukawati, Ubud, Payangan, Tampaksiring, Blahbatuh, Seraya Barat and Seraya Tengah, Sanur, Kuta and Mengwi. Approximately 536 scholars received their packages, thanks to the assistance of our volunteers including GNOTA Gianyar and Badung, and several local community leaders. We also collected the scholars‟ report cards to forward to each of their donors on the sponsorship report and renewal. At January distribution, we also had the privilege to have Eka Rahmayuni, a former Kembali student now a YKIP University scholar, give a short speech at one of the distribution event sessions. With confidence, Eka shared her experience to the juniors in particular, about the need to study and work hard in order to achieve their dreams.

Donor Visit: Heidi Circle Field Trip One of Kembali‟s groups of donors, The Heidi Circle regularly organizes field trips for their sponsored scholars. The event usually is held over two Sundays. The first Sunday allocated for the field trip and the following Sunday, the scholars gather to make cards for their donors. On March 4th, the first Sunday of the 2012 Heidi Circle field trip combined adventure and education in 2 activities on the same day. In the morning, the YKIP team, Heidi Circle donors and 56 of our scholars headed to an outwardbound style camp in the lovely village of Payangan. There, the children participated in many challenging games and activities with the goal being to exercise team building and self confidence in a fun environment. At first, the children were shy and hesitated to mingle, but soon after they were introduced to various fun games such as Rope Runners, Crazy Balls, Card Hunting, Spider Web, etc; they started to work together as a team and just had fun. For the final game Tug of War! Two ropes were used so four teams could play at the same time. Everybody had to join in, including the YKIP team and the Heidi Circle donors! As you could imagine, everybody was tired and hungry after these activities, so we had lunch and then headed off to Batur Volcano Museum. Batur Volcano Museum is located in the highland of north eastern Bali. This museum has an amphitheatre where our scholars watched a documentary movie about the whole process of volcanic eruption.

Next, the scholars were divided into two groups for a tour around the museum. The museum has some wonderful geographical activities of Mount Batur and the Pacific Ring of Fire. A friendly guide from the museum patiently explained each activity to the children and encouraged them to try by themselves. By the end of the tour, we were allowed to observe Mount Batur from a telescope on top of the museum. Unfortunately it was raining and foggy that afternoon so we were unable to see a lot. The trip to the museum was very enjoyable and informative. All of us gathered again at SDN Batuan Kaler on the following Sunday of March 11th, 2012. Heidi brought along the children‟s photos taken the week before and various stamps the children used to decorate their cards. For a few hours, the children were busy decorating their cards with drawings of flowers and butterflies in various colors and some of them also drew their favorite cartoon character, Sponge Bob Square Pants and some framed their pictures by drawing batik motives. At the end of the day, a scholar who is in the 12th grade, Ni Putu Elindawati represented all of the Heidi Circle sponsored scholars and thanked the donors who had kindly supported them for many years so that they could continue their education. At the end of the field trip, we all parted with big smiles on our faces and looked forward to meeting each other again next year. Thank you Heidi Circle!!

Scholar’s Story Made is the second child of three. In 2009, she had both her legs amputated as prevention against permanent paralysis. However, being physically disabled has not stopped Made from pursuing her dream to be a multimedia staffer. She had it firmly on her mind, that the first thing first to do after her recovery was to get a “Kejar Paket A” certificate, a course which offers a primary school level of certification to its graduates, so that she would be able to continue her education higher. Made finally got what she always wished for, a chance to advance her education. Now, she is in 8th grade at a junior high school in her village. Made wishes to achieve education as high as possible so that she can make her dream come true. Made sees herself as one day being a successful and independent woman, one who does not depend on others, and also a daughter who can help lift her family out of poverty and into a better standard of living. Made is one of many that has shown great inspiration to those who want to see, that education is a very important aspect in the effort to improve quality of life, and most importantly, never feel its too late to live your dreams.

Vocational Education Scholarship Program

Appeal for Support In April 2012, YKIP officially launched their new program: Vocational Education Scholarship. The scholarship offers a one year technical certified education program and internship with field of studies of Computer Technician, Computerized Accounting, Graphic Design and Food Production (Cooking). YKIP also organizes business meetings to link students with potential employers to ensure future job placement. Complimentary soft skills development will be organized based on a volunteer system approach, to prepare the graduates entering a competitive job market. The annual cost for each scholar to complete their education is approximately USD 2,350. This year, 3 outstanding Kembali graduates are going to be selected to receive Vocational Education Scholarships. More graduates are able to be supported as YKIP is currently appealing for more sponsors before the new academic year of 2012/2013 which begins in August. Please join our effort to break the cycle of poverty in Bali. If you would like to sponsor a scholar through the Vocational Education Scholarship program, please contact us at [email protected].

KIDS Program Congratulation Budi and Wulan! We would like to congratulate Budi Setiawan, for completing his study at a University in Denpasar on March 2012. He graduated as Bachelor of Law with GPA 3.19 out of 4.00. For Budi, studying Law is more than to fulfill his interest; it is his passion, a way for him to get closer to what he always dreamed of – to provide advocacy assistance for people who live in remote areas. His heart was stirred by the fact that there are still many people, especially those who live in remote areas that are not aware of their civil rights. Now that he is a Bachelor of Law; the opportunity to provide this assistance is surely within his reach.

University Scholarship Program Novi Won Regional Competition! On th On the 27-28 April 2012, Ni Wayan Noviyanti, one of our University scholars represented her school in Nersvaganza Region V ILMIKI in Malang, East Java. Nersvaganza is a competition for nursing students from various institutions. Her team won First Place and now will represent Region V ILMIKI at National Level at the end of May this year. Novi shared her feelings towards the competition in the following letter. Congratulation Novi and team! We are very proud of you and good luck for the National Level Competition!

We also would like to congratulate Gusti Ayu Wulan Sari Dewi, for being awarded with Third Place prize in the Drawing Competition of Sport, Art and Study Week held by Badung Regency on March 2012. In 2010-2011 when she was still in Elementary School, Wulan was also sponsored through KIDS to take Drawing Lessons. At present she is in Junior High School where she decided not to continue with the lessons. However, she still continues to draw at home and often enters Drawing Competitions around the Denpasar area. Keep up the good work, guys!

Donors and Volunteers

University Scholars’ Giving Back Program In recognition of the benefits received by the university scholars, they are required to organize a Giving Back Community Program. Through their focus group discussion meetings, assisted by our volunteers, seven of our scholars worked together as a team and initiated „Plastic Waste Countermeasures Program‟ with main objective reduce plastic waste to preserve Bali‟s natural beauty.

Since 2007, Monica and Ray Sanderson have been loyal sponsors of our KIDS Program. Every year, Monica and Ray along with a team of supporters organize the Greg Sanderson Memorial Golf Day to raise funds that are always given to KIDS. This year, Monica and her team donated AUD 13,400 to our KIDS Program. Thank you Monica, Ray and the supporters for your kind support and hard work.

The main idea is to organize a workshop at SMA Singamandawa Gianyar about how to convert plastic waste with no economical value (predominantly household waste such as coffee and detergents sachets, etc) into products with economical value such as bags and pencil cases. When production begins, our scholars will also help with marketing and distribution. The profit will be used to ensure the program‟s sustainability in order to support community empowerment.

We would like to express our gratitude to Dr. Bulan Trisna Djelantik Sp. THT(K) who generously donated 200 copies of the book „Menepis Segala Rintangan: Lika-Liku Hidup Seorang Putra Raja di Bali‟ for our Kembali Program. These books will be distributed to Kembali scholars who will graduate Senior High School this year. We hope these books will assist them in coping with the new world after graduation.

At the moment, they are still in the fundraising process to raise funds to buy a sewing machine and they are also collecting the plastic wrap / sachets required for the workshop.

Mary Beth Gundrum who donated herbal ointments for Ibu Chusnul Chotimah, who suffered severe burns from 2002 Bali Bombings.
