This Summer:

Libraries Rock.

It’s time to read, explore, and win prizes. No matter your age, your library has a challenge for you. Rock the house and complete the challenges listed in this newsletter for your age group. For each milestone, you get to pick your prize. But remember, prizes are available while supplies last and for a limited time. Here’s how you win: First, sign up to participate in the Summer Reading Challenge. Signing up is quick and easy at Summerfest, at your neighborhood branch, or online at oplib.org/river_reads. During the summer, keep track of the number of pages you read and the challenges you complete (listed on page 3) online through our mobile-friendly website. You can also ask for a paper copy of the reading challenge log and return it to your local branch. Completing page and challenge milestones will earn you prizes. Remember, challenges must be completed and logged between May 19th and August 4th at 11:59 pm CDT. There’s more information about the challenges throughout this newsletter and on www.oplib.org. Follow your library on Facebook and get the latest updates on the Summer Reading Challenge and even more opportunities to win. Top Six Book Selections for Children: Vote for Your Favorite Online. Goldi Rocks and the Three Bears by Corey Schwartz Papa Bear, Mama Bear, and Baby Bear know how to rock. But they need a new singer. Everyone auditions: the Three Pigs, Little Red Riding Hood, and more. To their dismay, no one seems right. Could the perfect lead singer be the mysterious girl sleeping on Baby Bear’s keyboard?. I Survived the Sinking of the Titanic by Lauren Tarshis Ten-year-old George Calder can’t belive his luck. He and his little sister, Phoebe, are on the famous Titanic, crossing the ocean with their Aunt Daisy. The ship is full of exciting places to explore, but when George ventures into the first class storage cabin, a boom shakes the entire boat. Suddenly, water is everywhere, and George’s life changes forever. Ada’s Violin by Susan Hood Ada Rios grew up in a small town in Paraguay built on a landfill. She dreamed of playing the violin, but with little money for anything but the bare essentials, it was never an option. Then a music teacher named Favio Chavez arrives, and makes them instruments out of materials in the trash. It’s a crazy idea, but one that leaves Ada’s town changed forever. Trombone Shorty by Troy Andrews Troy Andrews grew up in the Treme’ neighborhood of New Orleans, desperately wishing to emulate the musicians in his family. He and his friends make their own instruments out of found materials, then perform in the streets and march with bands. One day he finds a battered, discarded trombone that’s bigger than he is. Finally he has a real instrument to play, and he practices day and night, earning the nickname Trombone Shorty from his older brother. Giraffes Can’t Dance by Giles Andreae Gerald the giraffe wants nothing more than to dance. With crooked knees and thin legs, dancing is harder than you would think for a giraffe. Gerald finally is able to dance to his own tune when he gets encouragement from an unlikely friend. Miguel and the Grand Harmony by Matt de la Pena Music is present in all of life’s events, the highs and lows, and takes part in the “Grand Harmony.” For some unexplained reason, Miguel is forbidden to play music. He secretly practices on a makeshift guitar while his family joyfully makes shoes.

Your Library in the Community: Pop-Up Libraries To celebrate National Library Week, your library took to the streets and staffed “pop-up libraries” throughout the parish on April 10 and 11. Thanks to everyone who stopped by and chatted with us. We had so much fun, we’re planning to do it again! If you see us “pop-up” be sure to come visit. We’d love to see you, and you’ll probably learn something new about one of Ouachita Parish’s best kept secrets... your Ouachita Parish Public Library.

Top Six Book Selections for Adults: Vote for Your Favorite Online. Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann. In the 1920s, the richest people in the world were the Osage Indian nation. Oil had been discovered beneath their land, and they lived a lifestyle of mansions and chauffeured cars. Then, one by one, the Osage were killed, and those who dared investigate were murdered. Young FBI director J. Edgar Hoover teamed up with former Texas Ranger Tom White to unravel one of the most chilling mysteries in American history. Magic Strings of Frankie Presto by Mitch Albom. At age nine, Spanish war orphan Frankie Presto is sent to America in the bottom of a boat with only an old guitar and six strings. As he grows, his talent touches stars in every genre, from classical to jazz to rock, including Hank Williams and Elvis Presley. But his gift is also a burden. His music has the power to alter lives, and a string turns blue when a life is changed. Suddenly, Frankie vanishes, to reappear decades later to touch one last life. Sourdough by Robin Sloan. Lois Clary is stuck in a plum job at a robotics tech company, but she feels like a robot herself. She orders takeout each evening from two amiable brothers. When they are forced to flee the country, she is entrusted with their precious sourdough starter. Lois soon begins to bake, and excels at it. But when a cutthroat farmer’s market committee refuses to admit her, she is recruited by a mysterious marketplace that exploits both her tech and culinary skills. Bellweather Rhapsody by Kate Racculia. The Bellweather Hotel was rocked 15 years ago by a murder-suicide in room 712. Now hundreds of high school musicians have gathered in its crumbling halls for the annual statewide festival, and a colossal snowstorm threatens to trap them all inside. In the midst of it all, someone goes missing from room 712. The search for her entwines an eccentric cast of characters. They all have arrived with a secret, and everyone is haunted. The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin. A.J. Fikry’s life is not at all what he expected. He lives alone, his bookstore is experiencing the worst sales in its history, and now his prized possession, a rare collection of Poe poems has been stolen. But when a mysterious package appears at the bookstore, its unexpected arrival gives Fikry the chance to make his live over and see everything anew. The Chilbury Ladie’s Choir by Jennifer Ryan. In the early days of World War II England, the men are away fighting and the women of Chilbury village forge an uncommon bond. They defy the Vicar’s edict to close the choir. Instead, they carry on as the Chilbury Ladies’ Choir. Five unforgettable choir members face home-front struggles: a widow sending her only son to fight; the local scion’s daughter drawn to a mysterious artist; her younger sister with an impossible crush; a Jewish refugee hiding a family secret; and a conniving midwife plotting to outrun a seedy past.
