Principal Mark Creevey Dear Parents,

Yearbooks Arrived Many preparations are in place for the end of the school year and the start of the 2017 school year. This week our school Yearbook has been produced and a copy has been sent home with the eldest in the family. It is a great memento of the 2016 school year. Our thanks to Mrs Robyn Bensley who has coordinated the printing of the book, collating information from many sources into a very smart and colourful production. Well Done! If parents would like an additional copy to send overseas, or to Grandparents interstate etc they can be purchased at the school office for $20.

Advent As we prepare for the end of the school year and Christmas celebrations are just around the corner it is also a special time in the church year which we call Advent. This is a time of preparation for the coming of Christ in our lives. This can be marked in many ways but traditionally it has been signified with an Advent Wreath with four candles showing the four weeks of Advent and or a calendar where some suggested good deeds are highlighted each day. Regardless of the symbols which can be used it is important that Christ is a special part of Christmas. The historical Jesus came as a baby born in a manger to bring to life the message that God Loves Us. Let Jesus come into our lives this Christmas through our words and actions. One such opportunity is the St. Vincent De Paul collection for needy families which we will present to the local St. Vincent De Paul chapter next Wednesday afternoon at our Carols Assembly (commencing at 1:30pm).

Are You Moving? As we prepare for 2017 could any families who know that their circumstances have changed and find that they will not be attending St. Benedict’s next year please advise the office. This allows us to prepare for next year with some accuracy and also allows us to confirm with families who are waiting patiently on “Waiting Lists” that there could be a possibility of joining our community. Many thanks!

Swimming Finishes This Week Our final swimming day for our Prep to Year 2 students will be this Friday. I trust that this has been a most enjoyable and beneficial opportunity for our students. We live on an island, although a big island, and it is important that we all know how to swim. Our Year 3 to 6 students will have their swimming in Term 1 next year.

Student Reports Student Reports will be issued next Wednesday. We are in the process of having them available on the parent portal for the first time. If you do not have access to the internet please contact the school office.

Jubilate Deo Congratulations to all of our musicians who attended the Jubilate Deo Band workshop on Monday. It was a most enjoyable experience to work with four other schools (St. Joseph’s Bracken ridge, St Kieran’s Brighton, St. Pius Banyo and Genisis College) and their respective Instrumental music teachers. There were over 180 students participating in the experience and the final band performance was the culmination of the day. They produced a very powerful sound and quality performance. Well Done!

Announcement of Successful Review In Term 3 & 4 of this year, your principal, Mr Mark Creevey, undertook his Performance Review which was conducted by Brisbane Catholic Education Area Supervisor, Derek Maclean. Derek Maclean wishes to advise that the review is now complete and has been very successful. Mr Creevey is to be congratulated on the work he is doing at St Benedict’s Primary. Mr Maclean also wishes to thank all parents, staff, community members and students who participated in the review by completing surveys. He also wishes to thank the community for the hospitality extended to the review panel during their time at the school.

Thank You Year 6 and P&F Last Monday, Year 6 students enjoyed a day in the great outdoors, creating their end of year gift to the school. Have you noticed the new mural which is located on the retaining wall of the tennis court facing the car park? It was begun in the September holidays by Year 6 mum and professional painter, Tamara Walker and her daughter, Shaylee. Together they laid down the background colours which the Year Six students then added to by outlining and painting action figure silhouettes of some prep students. Finishing touches will be added before school finishes - keep an eye on the progress. Many thanks to the P&F for suggesting the project and especially to the very generous painting team of Tamara and Shaylee Walker who donated their time and expertise and have also volunteered to paint the final protective coat. We are confident that the colourful and vibrant mural will be appreciated for many years to come. Many thanks for your continued wonderful communications work! Kind Regards, Mrs Heddy Shears (Art)

Thought for the Week “Every time something good happens to you, make something good happen to someone else.” Have a great week! Regards, Mark

Supporting All Learners Into 2017 As part of an annual student handover and transition process at St Benedict’s, valuable opportunities are provided to our staff to participate in discussion and gain insight into their new 2017 students and how they learn.  This Wednesday is the first of three opportunities the staff have to share knowledge about current strategies being used by their peers that move their students learning forward. This will take place in our usual staff meeting time.  The second opportunity will be on the Professional Development days at the beginning of the year when we explore "Catering for ALL Learners" and reflect on class data.  The third will be one on one meetings with the Support Teachers to review new classes, which will be held in Week 3 of Term 1.  In addition to these face-to-face opportunities, all paper work/monitoring tools data and data gathered from standardized tests is forwarded each year to the new class teacher for review. This is all part of ensuring that we have a good picture of the students in front of us and how to best move their learning forward.

Golden Wheelie Bin Award The Golden Wheelie Bin has been a strong motivator for encouraging the students to clean up their areas, particularly their eating areas. We had a close race last week, when two year levels had been vying for the coveted trophy, consistently keeping their areas clean throughout the week. Unfortunately, under close inspection on the last day, one of the year levels were found to have a mess under the port racks and know that this is an area they will have to address in the coming weeks. Last week’s winners were Year 5. Congratulations!!!

All three children will compete in a medley relay and a freestyle relay for their age group. We are very proud and excited for them! Good Luck for this significant competition in the holidays!

From Archbishop Mark Coleridge In these days, over 7000 young people are bidding farewell to our Catholic schools after long years of schooling. But there's been more to it than schooling, which is why we speak of Catholic "education". The word "education" means to draw out; and our schools try to draw out of our young people the best of the human being. Their years in Catholic schools have been a great gift to them and have often meant real sacrifices from others, like their parents. As our graduates set forth into the future, may their Catholic education mean that they can help create a genuinely human society that brings out the best in all of us. (Archdiocese Alive: November, 2016)

The Value of a Catholic Education Also in the November edition of the Archdiocese Alive, was an article that shared the results of a 13-year study into the satisfaction and long-term reward of a Catholic Education. The study has found that Catholic school graduates enjoy a high "life satisfaction". The report says that's down to a unique Catholic school factor. To read more, go to the following link: https://brisbanecatholic.org.au/articles/catholic-schools-satisfaction/

APRE Brett Kitchener Dear Parents, The last couple of weeks in a school year are always very busy ones punctuated by significant events.

Graduation We wish the Year 6 leaders well for their graduation evening tomorrow night. Transition from primary school to secondary school is a significant milestone. Feelings of excitement, anticipation as well as anxiety and sadness at leaving familiarity behind will be very much part of their mindsets. We thank these children for their student leadership in 2016.

Carols Our relaxed celebration assembly will occur next Wednesday at 1.30 in the school hall. Parents are welcome to attend and sit on a rug with their children to join in with this annual event. At this assembly we will make our festive presentation to St Vincent De Paul. Throughout the year we have committed to various initiatives to support communities abroad. The SVDP Christmas Appeal provides opportunity to support those in the local community who need a hand up. There is one week remaining to bring along food items for this initiative. As reported in last week’s newsletter, this provides an opportunity for your children to appreciate the importance of giving. Ask your children to commit to a chore in order to earn the items you provide them to bring in to school .

Last day of School At 9am in the school hall, our final Parish Mass for the year will take place. These weekly masses are wonderful events. I urge you to attend if you are able. To conclude the school year, the whole school will meet in the hall from eleven o’clock for our end of year liturgy. The children will be dismissed from the hall at 12 o’clock. May peace be with you at this busy time of the school year. Brett

My happiest moments… For me, the happiest moment of being a teacher is when a student understands what you have been trying to teach. To see so many students happily engaging with reading and recommending books to their friends is very satisfying. It is with considerable sadness that I will be leaving St Benedict’s at the end of the year and I wish all your families a very happy and healthy holiday over the Christmas season.

Holiday Reading Holidays are the best time to read as there is a need to find some shade and there’s lots of time. I keep telling the children that to improve their reading ability they must practise, just like with any sport or activity but there is no point in trying to read a book that is far above their reading capability. The child feels disappointed and frustrated. Find a book that a child can read most of the words ie no more than 5 significant mistakes on a page. It is then important that the book is read to the end unless there is a legitimate reason not to. For a new book, I recommend reading for at least twenty minutes without interruption and then about ten minutes when the book is opened again, that means that the child won’t have to keep reading the beginning over and over. After a few times doing this, the response is often, ‘I don’t like this book it’s boring’. Sometimes a child will need some help with the first few chapters to ‘get them going’, knowing the setting and some of the characters.

www.stbenedicts.qld.edu.au

Join the Local Library Holidays are an excellent time to read to children. This is good for listening skills, discussions and parent/child bonding. As the school library is now closed for borrowing, I have advised the children to join their local library and to ask the librarian how to reserve a book onto the ‘hold’ shelf if their library doesn’t have a copy. Local libraries usually have holiday activities and the children can borrow as many books as they wish.

Great Christmas Gifts I’ve always recommended Joke Books be given to children as presents for Christmas. They have to be read aloud (practise) and they are reading books so they don’t forget. Thank you for allowing me to be part of the St Benedict’s Community. Best wishes, Sue Richmond Teacher-Librarian

Preparing for Unpredictable Weather Events Storm season is here once again, it is a good time to think about how to help children develop emotional resilience to cope when things are unpredictable and out of their control. This article was prepared by Queensland Health and the University of Queensland to help families prepare children for unpredictable and sometimes dangerous weather.

OT Debra Bone Occupational Therapist at St Benedict’s Enquiries 3888 7192/0411 704 340 [email protected] www.debbonekidsot.com

Preparing for unpredictable or dangerous weather - Do your children feel safe? You know how to keep your children physically safe, but how do you prepare them emotionally for unpredictable weather? 1. Talking to your children about unpredictable or dangerous weather is helpful, but make sure it’s not the only thing you talk about with them. 2. If your children ask you questions, stick to the facts without too much detail. 3. Children look to adults for how to behave, so make sure you stay calm yourself. 4. Go over your family’s dangerous weather plan with your children so they know how to stay safe. Please visit www.emergency.qld.gov.au for more information. 5. Limit your child’s contact with media stories about dangerous weather—adults need to stay informed, but children don’t need to see scary images replayed over and over. 6. When dangerous weather approaches, stay close to your children and know where they are. 7. Talk to your local GP or call 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84) or your school guidance counsellor if you’re worried about your children’s level of anxiety.

The Student Wellbeing Hub The Australian Government has released a new website, the Student Wellbeing Hub, which is underpinned by the very successful National Safe Schools Framework. It aims to provide current best -practice, curriculum- aligned resources for educators, parents, and students on a range of contemporary issues that will help build and sustain the wellbeing and safety of all members of the school community. Parents will find advice and information to help them support their child, build positive communication with their child’s school and contribute actively to the wider school community. The student area contains age- appropriate information, advice and games that build students’ understanding of topics and issues important to their wellbeing at school and beyond.

We have a small group of delightful French students coming to Australia for 10 weeks to immerse in local Australian culture, experience our High schools, sports, environment and lifestyle. All the French students are around 15 years old, speak excellent English, have their own spending money, cover all school expenses ,and we arrange all aspects of their program. They are looking forward to joining an Australian family for a short term. It’s fun and interesting to help these young people achieve their Australian dream. If you’d like know more, please email your interest to Rob at Inter Cultural Management on [email protected]
