Newsletter No. 41 In This Issue:  Staffing  Grade 6 Graduation  Student Achievement  Important Dates 2014/2015  School Contributions/Book Collection Dear Parents, As I write this final newsletter for 2014, the Christmas spirit is in full swing at school. Many home groups have enjoyed class parties and graduation rehearsals for the year six students are well underway. Our staff, students and parents continue to work in partnership which ensures that the Hartwell students have the very best learning opportunities. Congratulations to you all- Hartwell is a school of which we can all be very proud. Staffing At the end of the school year three teachers will be leaving Hartwell. Hannah Woods who has taught Year 6 this semester and will no doubt be offered plenty of jobs as soon as her work visa comes through, because she is a very capable teacher; Angus Bunting who will be teaching Year 5/6 at The Maryborough P-12 Education Centre, as he is moving to live in Newstead and Alicia Guild who will be teaching Year 5 at Mount View P. S. Each of these teachers has left their mark at Hartwell and I’m sure you join with me in wishing them all the best for the years ahead. As well we are saying goodbye to two of our integration aides- Debbie Oakey and Helen Makris. These ladies have worked superbly with our students who have funding for special needs and are an important part of the teaching and learning program at Hartwell. The new teachers to the school will be: - Ben Maloney and Emily Durham [Year 5], Katrina Hall [Year 4], Emily Mackie, Jasmine Giles and Libby Cotter [Year 2], Megan Donelly [Year 1] and Chris Byron-Smith [Prep]. You will have the opportunity to meet each of these teachers next year. Our three ladies- Elysia Grant, Holly Nemec and Julia Cutelle who are going on family leave will be at Hartwell for varying lengths of time in term one. They will release teachers who are absent and

PE UPDATE Weetbix Tryathlon Don’t forget to get in early and register for the 2015 Weetbix Tryathlon. It is great to hear of so many students who have already done so. Registrations will close early if the quota is met and I recall last year some Hartwell students missed out. Don’t forget, if you cannot do Melbourne you can always do Geelong. We already have some students booked for this event. The date of the event in Melbourne is Sunday 8th March 2015. Early bird discount finishes on 21st December 2014. In the New Year we will have some training sessions leading up to the event to ensure students are familiar with each leg and the transition between them. Register at: www.try.weetbix.com.au Swimming Trials The next swimming trial will be held on Tuesday 3rd February 2015 at 4pm at Harold Holt Aquatic Centre. Save the date! Thank you! It has been a fantastic year in Physical Education & Sport. Our program has been rich to say the least. Participation rates in athletics and cross country were well up on previous years. We had many students playing Hoop Time Basketball for the first time ever, we re-introduced diving, we even entered a gymnastics team into a comp. Our Yr. 6 interschool sport program was a success with students trying different sports and our girls’

softball and tee ball teams reaching EMR finals. In PE lessons we had experts in Hockey, Ultimate Frisbee, Touch Football, Cricket, AFL 9s, Dance, Basketball, Lacrosse and Tennis come out and share their expertise across many year levels. Netball proved to be a big hit with the Yr. 5 & 6 boys! Well done and thank you to all students for their enthusiasm and commitment in PE. It is great to hear of students taking up new sports outside of school! However, I must thank all of our wonderful parents, grandparents and even siblings who have assisted me this year in running the program. Whether you were raking the sand pit at long jump, running laps of Lynden Park for XC training, scoring for tee ball, lending me post padding or even braiding hair for gymnastics, I appreciate all of the support you have given me this year. There are a few people who have gone above and beyond and really made a difference to our PE & Sport program. Thank you to Nareen Robinson who coached the amazing girls’ tee ball and softball teams, the diving team, our gymnastics girls and the swim team. Many students have been lucky enough to learn from Nareen’s experience this year. Thanks to Brad Boag who assisted with athletics, cross country, swimming and the tryathlon. Phil Kennedy is our athletics relay guru whom we thank enormously. Our team’s success is down to Phil’s great coaching. Thank you also to Cathy Smith and her son and past student Aaron (Kayla and Amber’s brother). They both assisted me at swimming, aths and XC taking on recording roles. Aaron coached basketball and they both spent a day riding the streets of Hartwell for Bike Ed training (as did many other wonderful parents!) Thank you one and all! Finally, thank you to all of the teaching staff for their continued support of PE & Sport at Hartwell and in particular the office staff for all of their hard work in ensuring the program runs. Have a great Christmas break, stay fit and healthy and I look forward to an exciting 2015! Jo Bayes PE Teacher & Sport Co-ordinator GOOD FOOD SHOP The Good Food Shop will not operate on Wednesday and Friday this week as it is closed for stock take.
