NEWSLETTER

Dear Parents, Friends and Students, Last Saturday evening the HSC class of 2011 (the year of our Golden Jubilee) gathered at the College for a reunion. It was wonderful to see such a large number of the group return to their ‘alma mater’ to share stories of days gone by and of their current enterprises. Stories of university assignments, trade opportunities and how these young men are going to change the world! It was most exciting and refreshing to share their post school optimism. More than one conversation turned to the Federal Budget, specifically the cuts to funding at the tertiary education level. Without going into detail, I was both inspired and a little surprised at how much these young men had absorbed about the budget but more so the passion they had for the views that they held on these issues. They appeared to be both informed and engaged in the debate. As I spoke with these ex-students my mind turned to our current students and to the College’s intention that each of our boys take more responsibility for and interest in their own learning. This is not to say that this is not happening at present. The passion and drive needed to achieve their dreams and goals was on display on Saturday night in the eyes and words of their predecessors. As they say in the cooking shows: “Here is one we made earlier!” The areas of the College that we are committed to building in each of our young men are Ministry, Learning and Wellbeing. In each of these domains we strive to develop in Br Don Newton with some of the Class of 2011 students our students an understanding of why we who attended a reunion at the College last Saturday do things as well as what and how we are doing it. A love of God, an understanding of Jesus, a passion for their learning and the ability to care for themselves and look out for others is a fine template to build committed, responsible young men to go out into the world to make a difference. I saw this on Saturday night and I liked it. It should give us all confidence in the youth of today and the leaders of tomorrow. With my very best wishes,

NAPLAN testing for Years 7 and 9 has now concluded and we eagerly await results later in the year. My congratulations go to all students in Years 7 and 9 who approached these tests both eagerly and maturely. Similarly I wish to acknowledge the efforts of our English and Mathematics staff in preparing the boys for these tests. Semester 1 Exams for Years 8 and 10 have now concluded and Years 7 and 9 begin their assessment block on Wednesday May 21st. Parents and caregivers are reminded of the protocols surrounding a student’s absence from school on an examination day whereby a phone call needs to be made to the College to verify the absence. On the first day that the student returns to school he will sit the exam/s missed, or like task, and needs to present documentation surrounding the absence. This would be a Doctor’s Certificate. Years 11 and 12 Reports were distributed to parents and caregivers at the Parent Teacher Interviews on Monday May 19th. Students, in collaboration with parents and care givers, should now be using this feedback to evaluate their goals set at the Target Setting Day. Similarly, new goals should now be set and study patterns evaluated as these courses progress to the end of term 3. For our Year 12 students this means hard work preparing for the HSC. The Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 Parent Teacher Interview bookings portal is now open on Sentral via the Parent Portal. Parents and care givers are advised to book interviews as soon as possible and not be disappointed at the last minute. The process to book interviews relies on parents and caregivers accessing the Sentral Parent Portal. This process was used earlier in the year to book interviews for the Target Setting Day.

If you are experiencing problems accessing the Parent Portal and/or making interview requests please do not hesitate to contact either myself or Mrs Cathy Deguara by phoning the College on 9349 7333 or email to the addresses given below. Year 11 Hospitality Work Placement For my mandatory one week of Work Placement in Hospitality, I was sent to the Four Points by Sheraton, located at 161 Sussex Street, Darling Harbour. Throughout the week, I was required to use my beginner skills in cooking, by being a kitchen hand for the week. With this, I was required to assist the Sue and Head chefs with their daily jobs. This included cleaning the kitchen after the Breakfast secession, assisting in the Lunch and Dinner prep, and completing certain important paperwork. Within the lunch and Dinner Prep’s, I would help cut and peel fruit and vegetables, prepare croissants and cook pancakes for breakfast, deep fry battered fish for lunches, and create Salmon and Oyster Platters for the dinner Buffets. The employees at the Four Points were kind, caring, and supportive of my learning, and were always available to help assist in my development of certain skills. In conclusion, I believe the Work Placement was necessary in my help for the subject and to receive a firsthand experience in witnessing what it’s like working in a professional kitchen. Animal Adoptions

IN THE

TRADITION

For the past few weeks, Mrs Costello and Ms. Ben-Nissan’s Hayes 7 Homeroom has been sponsoring three Balmain tigers, a chimp and some bilbies at Taronga Zoo Sydney. The names of the tigers are: Kembali (Male), Katika (Female) and Sakti (Male). Originally, their goal was to adopt only one Balmain tiger, but as we were in the process of adoption, Taronga Zoo displayed their generosity by allowing us to adopt two more similar tigers, a chimp and bilbies as part of the money the House Group raised. Students of Hayes 7 are looking forward to seeing monthly updates on these animals and what our money does for them. The donation was over $300, raised by the students and house group leader of Hayes 7. We would like to extend a challenge to other House Groups to consider similar animal adoptions or other charities that conduct compassionate work within Australia and around the world.

FROM THE LANGUAGES FACULTY

DRAMA FOR LANGUAGES AT PAGEWOOD As a part of our Italian program for Year 8, students learn about Commedia dell’Arte, which is improvised theatre dating back to the Middle Ages portraying loud, stereotypical characters we still see today. Masks and acrobatics are also an integral part of this type of theatre. The students were familiar with the traditional characters brought to life by two very talented actors from Cultural Infusion. Pantalone and Il Capitano feature in this story, where Capitano returns from war a hero, much to the delight of Pantalone, who offers him his daughter in marriage. However, his servant is also after her and so the journey of jokes, physical comedy and song begins. A highlight of the performance was the wedding ceremony itself, where students were chosen to act out the parts of the bridesmaids and groomsmen, which they did with great enthusiasm and excitement. The boys were engaged throughout the entire play, they asked many relevant questions and their participation and involvement reflected their knowledge of this area of the Italian Curriculum at Pagewood. FROM THE RELIGIOUS EDUCATION COORDINATOR Ministry Week With Ministry Week fast approaching I thought I would profile a student who has served the community. Ministry Week will be a chance for the College to place the spotlight on how we serve. A lot have students like George have already undertaken some community service. George Rahal was a member of the first team that went to serve at Matt Talbot on behalf of the College at the start of the year. MR:OC: George, why did you want to go along to Matt Talbot? George: Well I decided to go because I thought it would be a great experience and I hoped that it would teach me to be thankful for what I have. Mr. OC: How were you asked to serve the Matt Talbot community? George: I helped with cleaning and drying the forks and knives that the homeless had used for breakfast. Other boys helped with cleaning tables and clearing plates. Mr. OC: How do you feel that your work actually helps. Did you find it worthwhile? George: I felt good because I was able to assist the staff at the Hostel and make their job much easier. We were able to do a job as a team in less than an hour that would take the staff ages without us. Mr OC: What else did you get out of the experience?

George: I was quite surprised that living in a country like Australia that we have so many people that are homeless. Mr. OC: What has the experience taught you? George: I should be grateful and lucky to have a roof over my head. Mr. OC: What has it taught you about service? George: It’s a great way to get out there and try something new. It’s a great way to show that you care about others! Mr. OC: George thank you for your thoughts but more importantly thank you for your time – I hope you know what I mean! Ministry Week begins the day we celebrate Champagnat Day on June 5. During the following week students will share with their House Group how they have served their community and what they have taken out of it. For it is in giving that we receive! Mr O’Connor, Religious Education Coordinator

Year 10 Reflection Day Last week Year 10 enjoyed a reflection day with Chris Doyle from Karis Ministries. Please find below some first hand accounts of this tremendous experience. Ayden Eather (Aitken) reports it was “one of the best reflection day experience I have had.” Istvan Kovacs (Madigan) said that it was very informative and that he got a lot of positive things out of the day. Tom Quealy (Madigan) said that it was “fridge-tastic!” (This is in reference to a session about hopes and dreams where the topic of fridges was an integral part of the lesson). Anthony Huxtable (Houston) found the day very humorous and enjoyable, saying it helped him see who he really is. Dean Hawkins (Hayes) said that the day was enjoyable and inspiring. Some photos of the day are on the next page.

The Winter competition continued with Rounds 2 and 3 taking place over the last fortnight against Randwick and North Shore respectively. Against Randwick our League teams found the going tough with only 2 teams able to record victories, these being the Under 15’s and Under 14’s who won by similar margins. Both sides dominated the opposition in stunning displays combining flowing attack with resolute defence to keep their traditional rivals to only one try. For the Under 15’s their impressive performance was capped off when no less than 5 players were named in the MCC Under 15 Rugby League team (see list below), a wonderful achievement. The Opens found the going tough as they were decimated by injury and player unavailability all the while playing against a full strength Randwick outfit with representative players included. Despite the final score line 2 players from the A Grade team were selected in the MCC Opens Rugby League team (see list below). All teams in the Under 13’s suffered defeats with the A’s going down by 10 points, a result the coach is adamant they can turn around should the teams meet again in the finals, while the B’s and C’s despite trying their hardest were no match for their Marcellin and Lewisham counterparts respectively. In the Soccer it was a wonderful round as Pagewood secured 3 wins and a draw against Randwick, our best results against them in years. The Junior teams led the way as both Under 13 teams left it late to secure the winning goal. The A’s went 2 goals up and were seemingly cruising to victory only to see their lead evaporate before coming back to grab a late winner, while the B’s turned the opposition away time and again before stealing the win late to leave both coaches and players very excited! The Under 14’s showed the potential they have putting 4 past the Randwick keeper in a powerhouse display while the Under 15’s were unlucky to draw their game after being 2-0 up at half time, only to see Randwick come back and snatch a point at the death. While the Opens may have found life more difficult against tough opposition in miserable conditions, it was a great sign for the future of Soccer at Pagewood in years to come.

Against North Shore it was a great result for our League teams as most went on to record strong victories. A Grade managed to get their season going with a strong second half showing, winning by 30 points after the margin at half time was just 2. Latrell Mitchell, fresh from leading the Sydney Roosters SG Ball team to premiership glory just days earlier, had a blinder scoring 3 tries and kicking 6 goals to tally 24 points, half the team total. B Grade fought hard before succumbing to their opponents while the Under 15 and Under 14 teams continued their strong form from the previous week to win by mercy rule and remain undefeated. The Under 13A’s returned to form with a mercy rule win while the B’s also completed a shut out of the opposition winning 38-0. The C’s continue to fight hard in their matches and despite the lopsided score lines against them are enjoying themselves as they relish the opportunity to play in the MCC competition. In Soccer the joys of the results against Randwick were quickly extinguished by the frustration of narrow losses. The best result of the day came from our B Grade team who managed to take a point from their game in a 0-0 draw showing great resolve to hold out the opposition as every player gave everything they had. A Grade went down 2-3 after being up early and playing strongly. Lapses in concentration, however, were to prove costly as North Shore fought back to take the points, leaving the team with an uphill battle now to make the finals. Similar to A Grade, both Under 13 teams lost 2-3 in see-sawing, riveting contests. The B’s played very well to go up early but were unable to hang on to their lead in a much-improved performance from when they played North Shore in the trial, while the A’s could feel hard done by having done so well to fight back from 2-0 down to level at 2-2, only to concede a penalty with seconds remaining which the opposition calmly converted. The Under 14’s conceded early and went so close to levelling on many occasions but just could not find the back of the net, while the Under 15’s also improved significantly from when they played North Shore in the trial to go down after being well in the game at half time.

CCC Cup Rugby League On Monday 5th May the Pagewood A Grade Rugby League team headed out to Holy Cross College Ryde to compete in the CCC Cup Rugby League gala day. The team played 3 matches throughout the day, each consisting of 2 x 15 minute halves. Firstly Pagewood were up against St Edwards College Gosford whom they lost to last year, but this year turned the tables defeating them easily 34-10. Next up the boys faced another MCC team in Marist College Kogarah. It was a tight affair, however, in the end Pagewood went down 10-6. The third and final game was a spiteful one against Holy Spirit College Lakemba who failed to play in the spirit of the game. To our boys' credit they were not drawn into these tactics, and despite losing the game 14-6 the team was rewarded with a wildcard entry into the round of 16. The draw for this next stage of the competition will take place this Friday night at an official function where Pagewood will find out its next opponent. The date of this match is yet to be determined but will more than likely take place late this term or early next term. Details of how they go will be included in the first newsletter after the completion of this game. The College congratulates these students on their performances and behaviour on the day, and wishes them luck in the Round of 16.

Representative Golf Congratulations to Daniel Kolar on his wonderful performances at the NSW Combined High Schools Stroke and Match Play Championships played at the Wentworth Falls and Blackheath Golf courses recently. In the Stroke Play tournament held on the first two days at Wentworth Falls Daniel had rounds of 72 & 71 to finish equal 4th overall. A sudden death playoff was then required to determine the NSWCCC Stroke Play Champion which Daniel won on the 1st playoff hole with a birdie. In the Match Play tournament held on the final two days at Blackheath Daniel had 3 tough matches eventually winning all 3 on the 17th hole with under par scores to advance to the final. The final was an

exciting match as Daniel went head to head against one of his good mates and competitors, showing great sportsmanship as they clearly enjoyed their running battle. The gallery was kept well entertained as both players shot under par including a series of birdies and even an eagle! In the end it was Daniel who eventually closed out the match on the 18th hole, winning to become the 2014 NSW Combined High Schools Match Play Champion. During the recent holidays Daniel also competed in the NSW Matchplay Championships held at the Mt Broughton Golf Club where he took out the Under 17’s title. Well done to Daniel on his outstanding achievements as he continues his rise up the golfing ranks.

College Athletics Carnival The College Athletics Carnival this year will be held on Friday 30 th May (Week 5 Term 2) at Hensley Athletics Field in Pagewood. This is a compulsory College event and students are expected to meet at the venue at 8.30am unless competing in one of the earlier Championship events which commence at 8.00am. The Carnival will conclude at approximately 2.30pm. All students will receive an information note in the coming days with more specific details regarding the event. The note can also be viewed in the Sport section of the College website. Following on from the successful Swimming Carnival held at the start of the year it promises to be another wonderful event as we continue to see students proudly compete for their Houses under the new House system. House and Free Choice Sport It has been a great start to the House and Free Choice programs for students in Years 7-11 not involved in MCC competition. The boys have behaved responsibly and shown great enthusiasm. Students in Years 7 and 8 are reminded to bring their House shirts with them to assist with team selections and to more easily identify the Houses to which students belong. Students who fail to bring their House shirts with them may receive a Sport detention.
