he two youngest children cling to their mother’s skirt and watch anxiously as she closes the gate of the therapeutic walkway that connects the YWCA women’s shelter with The Children’s Center. Her eight year old walks slowly behind them, shoulders hunched, and his eyes downcast. He was clear with his mother that he didn’t want to come tonight. He worries that we’ll make him talk about the evening that he’d rather forget. The night that Douglas Goldsmith, Ph.D. his father struck his mother before Executive Director he stormed out of the house. The same evening that their mother, still bruised and bleeding, threw their clothes into a suitcase and took the children with her to the shelter. The younger ones have struggled to sleep since arriving at the YWCA and, according to their mother they fight all of the time. When they climb the stairs to The Children’s Center they are welcomed by our clinical team. Kami Chambers, the counselor who leads the group they will be attending, smiles and leans over to say a gentle hello to the youngest children. Sensing their anxiety she reassures them and, in return, they seem to relax their hold on to their mother’s skirt. She is quick to recognize the trepidation of the eight year old and, with a pat on the shoulder, reassures him that it really isn’t going to be as bad as he’s expecting. Kami accompanies the family to the staff room that is set up with tables complete with name cards for the family so that they can find their own space. The smell of the lasagna—a generous weekly donation from Harmons—brings smiles to their faces. And the little ones point eagerly to the tray of cupcakes set aside for dessert. “Strengthening Family Coping Resources” is a new trauma curriculum being used by The Children’s Center to help families recover from the impact of domestic violence. Beginning with a family dinner, we teach the family the importance of sitting down for a meal and we help them learn to talk about their day. This first step initially

page 2 www.childrenscenterutah.org

felt overwhelming for some of the mothers and their children. They were used to grabbing some food and running off to their various corners of their home. Family meals, in the past, were something that led to screaming and violence and were to be avoided at all costs. But after several weeks in the group the families are becoming comfortable with their new routine. They are learning to talk, to look at each other when they communicate, and are considerably more relaxed than they were on that first evening. Domestic violence continues to increase in our community. Impacting more than half of the children we see, such violence unfortunately creates a map for children about adult interactions. The confusion they experience

steaming from the fact that the person who is supposed to protect and defend them has now created in them a sense of fear become a primary focus of interventions. In the group the family is taught how to effectively manage difficult feelings and they learn new ways of getting along. The children learn to communicate to get their needs met. And for the first time the children are seeing that meals, games, and outings don’t need to end up with screaming and tears. This exciting new program is but one of the new evidence based trauma treatments being used at The Children’s Center to change lives. Childhood trauma can have a lasting impact on a child’s emotional and physical well-being. Fortunately, because of our partnership with the

National Child Traumatic Stress Network our talented, committed clinical team is able to help families create new beginnings marked by joy and comfort between the family members.

Thank you Harmons for the wonderful meals!

Congratulations to our Executive Director!

he University of Utah, College of Education honored Douglas Goldsmith with the Distinguished Alumnus Award. Dr. Elaine Clark, Dr. Goldsmith’s doctorate chair, presented the award by starting, “Douglas, you have made me very proud. Thank you for your unswerving devotion to the causes of children. And congratulations on being selected for this most meaningful and prestigious award.” Dr. Goldsmith received his doctorate in Educational Psychology in 1988. Since that time, he has dedicated his career, and his life, to the treatment

of children who are in greatest need of services, but because of their life circumstances, are the least likely

to receive treatment. Since becoming executive director, Dr. Goldsmith launched the Bridging the

Gap Conference, co-authored Attachment Theory and Clinical Work with Children and has grown The Children’s Center services to meet the ever changing and increasing needs of the community throughout Utah. On behalf of the Board of Trustees and Children’s Center staff, congratulations and thank you for being the consummate example of the work The Children’s Center is so well known for. page 3

he Children’s Center Board of Trustees and administrative staff would like to express their deepest gratitude to Nancy Hogarty Baker. Nancy recently fulfilled her two year Board chair term. During Nancy’s tenure, the Board increased the number of Board committees and created ad hoc committees of experts in the community to broaden the Board’s involvement in new areas such as website development and legislative outreach. Nancy shared as an important outcome, “We have worked hard at increasing our focus on the future through strategic planning for the ever-changing time we live in.” She will continue on the Board as past chair.

A Message from Nancy: I have so enjoyed the collegiality among the Board members and dedication exhibited by every single member. I have especially appreciated the learning I’ve gained from the breadth of expertise and viewpoints each member brings to the Board discussions and activities. Thanks to others before us, The Children’s Center was there for our family when we needed it in 1995. There are so many families who need it to be there for them today. And there are countless more families who don’t yet know they’ll need it to be there for them in years to come.

To that sentiment we thank you, Nancy, for your exemplary dedication and generosity so that The Children’s Center is indeed there for the countless more families in the years to come!

Art and Music Transform Emotions and Behavior

V

erbal communication is a common way for children to voice their thoughts and emotions, but for most children in the Therapeutic Preschool, certain thoughts and feelings can be difficult to understand and express. Children who don’t have the tools to recognize and organize their feelings tend to have as a result, a hard time

controlling their behavior and expressing those difficult emotions verbally. Hence, clinicians and Therapeutic Preschool Specialists (TPSs) at The Children’s Center rely on creative tools such as play therapy and art therapy to learn about a child’s emotional state, and teach them to identify their own emotions and learn to express them verbally rather than through antisocial behavior. Children with behavioral and emotional problems are better able to talk about what they think and how they feel when describing their painting than when talking about their feelings alone. This basic understanding guides many of the activities that take place in the Therapeutic Preschool. Every day, children work on art related activities, and once a week, they get to visit the Art Therapy Room and work on special art projects that are later displayed in their classrooms or around the building. Recently, Sandra Meyer, Therapeutic Preschool Coordinator, challenged morning and afternoon TPSs to an

page 4 www.childrenscenterutah.org

Experimental Art activity. Classes would come together to create an art board to be displayed in the preschool hallways. Sandra says “Experimental Art is all about the process, not the product. I wanted them to create something from scratch using paint, construction paper or even clay.” Both groups came up with beautiful and creative ideas; the morning groups worked on a beach board with a vibrant rainbow, cotton clouds and sparkly starfish, while the afternoon classes worked on a park themed board with colorful flowers and feathery ducks. Sandy’s challenge was a success; both boards brightened up the third floor hallways, but most importantly, they brightened up children’s faces. As children walked through the halls, they would often comment on the board, and express pride in their work saying, “That’s our rainbow!” or “Does everyone get to see my flowers?” Besides allowing children to express themselves, working on collaborative projects and seeing the final product on display helps them gain a sense of accomplishment and a positive self-image. Sandy recommends that parents take advantage of Experimental Art at home to learn more about a child’s emotional wellbeing. She advises that when asking about an art project, avoid questions like “What is that?” but rather initiate the conversation with “Tell me about what you just did”. Music therapy is another great way to gain insights on children’s emotions and it can also teach a child to identify feelings and manage behavior. Certified Music Therapist, Chelsea Sheedy, volunteered in the Therapeutic Preschool giving weekly Music Therapy sessions to provide children with a new way to understand what

they are feeling, and to reinforce positive behavior. She says that one of the greatest things about music therapy is that “it doesn’t feel like work,” which is particularly helpful for children who have a hard time controlling their bodies and following through with class activities. During her sessions, Chelsea used all sorts of musical instruments like a guitar, an ocean drum and other percussion instruments that the children take turns playing with. The playfulness and soothing character of music naturally drew the children’s attention and allowed them to focus on the activities. As a result, they felt happy and in control of their behavior. Through music therapy, Chelsea teaches children pro-social skills such as positive interaction and positive engagement. She also helps them decrease maladaptive behaviors and identify emotions. While Chelsea offered Music Therapy sessions, she witnessed great progress in children struggling with emotional and behavioral problems. She tells the story of a little boy who during their first two Music Therapy sessions, would Chelsea Sheedy refuse to sit in circle and join the rest of the class. On their third session, Chelsea noticed his behavior was a bit different; he was starting to pay attention, and seemed interested in playing with instruments. Little by little, the boy’s feelings towards music therapy were starting to change, until one day “He finally started having pro-social behavior! He sat in circle and sang along with the rest of the class.” said Chelsea with a smile on her face. The effectiveness of Music Therapy is evidence based, but sometimes all it takes is a bit of patience to witness amazing behavioral and emotional transformations. Even though Chelsea’s Music Therapy sessions have ended, her teachings continue helping children since some TPSs have incorporated Chelsea’s music techniques as part of their day to day therapy. We are deeply grateful for Chelsea’s generous support through Music Therapy sessions, which she offered at no cost for morning Therapeutic Preschool classes in the Salt Lake and Kearns facilities.

Gala at the Gallivan 2013 An ancient Japanese legend promises a wish granted to anyone who folds a thousand paper cranes. The cranes are given as gifts of good luck, happiness, health and prosperity that are said to last 1,000 years.

T

his year 1,000 paper cranes decorated the Gala and were folded by volunteers all over the world. Some even came from Japan with a wish of health and prosperity for the thousands of children and families who come to The Children’s Center each year seeking help.

Learn how to make your own paper crane! Cut the paper on the line indicated and watch this video for instruction: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ux1ECrNDZl4 page 6 www.childrenscenterutah.org

Under the direction of Chairs Julie Livers and Amy de la Garza, over 500 guests who attended the Gala helped make the wish come true by participating in live and silent auctions and “Standing Up for Children.” This was a special part of the evening where an additional $49,000 was raised and matched by the generous support of Zions Bank, Wadsworth Brothers Construction, Tuscany/Francks and American Express. The total raised that night was in excess of $342,000. Guests also enjoyed a gourmet dinner provided by The Blended Table, signature cocktails donated by High West Distillery, beer provided by Epic Brewing Company, wine service by Castle Creek Winery, and musical entertainment by Stella. A special thank you goes out to all of the volunteers who donated their time and services to make the Gala a success. Our deepest appreciation goes to volunteers from NCL, Zions Bank, GE, The Children’s Center staff and the many more community members who assisted at the Gala. This event would not be possible without your dedication and support.

elebrating the coming fall in the majestic mountains was the perfect end to a hot summer. Thank you to Chef Mathew Lake, proprietor and creator at Zy Restaurant (and now Alamexo,) for creating the exquisite dining experience in the middle of a field in Summit County. Debbie Zachareas, Napa Valley Wine and Cheese Merchant, again entertained and educated the 120 lucky guests at this, again, sold-out fundraising success. The evening was kicked off with Gold Creek Farm cheeses paired with Park City’s brewery, Shades of Pale Brewing Company. All guests enjoyed the epicurean escape to the mountains and each other’s company. Dinner was served on hand-painted linens, created by Natasha Wallis Design. The festivities were wrapped up with Charming Beard Coffee, another local experience. Thank you to all who supported the evening. Because of the remarkable generosity of the vendors and the guests, $24,000 was raised to help children and families receiving services at The Children’s Center. A special thanks to Karen Weiss for the investment of time and resources for chairing the event and to the Gallivan Family for again hosting the soirée. If you don’t want to miss next year, mark your calendar for Saturday, August 30, 2014.
