Good luck for the future!

Dear Readers,

• Music – Two of our bands have been accepted to play at the national rock and pop festival on Sunday 14 July 2013 at the O2 Academy Birmingham.

• Sport – Our year 8 and 9 girls were crowned Aston Schools Rounders champions. -- Simran Bains and Dominic Taylor have secured a place at the Contemporary Dance School as part of the Birmingham Youth Dance Contest Toni Forrester in Year 8 has been shortlisted from over 25,000 studens across the country to attend the National Finals of the Inspire-Aspire project. Toni took part in a PSHE project that explored the Olympic and Paralympic Values and has remarkably been selected to receive an award at Stour Space, London on the 11th July, 2013 for her outstanding work. Next year will be a special year for Hamstead Hall not just because of the exciting things planned but because Hamstead Hall will be celebrating 40 years as a secondary school. We will be planning a number of community events during the year to mark this fantastic milestone. Watch this space for further details!!! Mr K Morris Principal

Boulogne braces itself for Brummie invasion! On Friday 24th May, when the rest of us were working hard, 50 yr7 pupils and 5 staff set off for the annual visit to Boulogne in northern France. The journey provided plenty of entertainment with loud snoring and lots of hilarity. I understand that some pupils look cute when they are asleep, whilst others just dribble like big babies! What a shame we haven’t got any photographic evidence. These pictures would have been great to put in your year 11 year book! The visit to the crêperie ( pancake house) passed by without any mishaps. I did expect someone to flip their pancake on someone’s head! The group also listened to a talk on how bread and cakes are made and then had the pleasure of sampling some of their wares- délicieux! Well done year 7 on your good behaviour. We will be able to take year 7 next May. A big thank you to the staff who accompanied the group Start saving for the trip to Paris that usually takes place in y10. Ms Burrows.

-- The Blast Beat programme, which is an exciting business and a separate performing arts competition for Year 9 pupils, has really captured the imagination, creativity and business acumen of our Year 9 pupils. Both groups of pupils have reached their respective finals.

Wishing you good health, happiness and prosperity! Mrs Chahal.

Summer Term 2012 - 2013

We have already achieved a number of successes as an academy. These include:

It has been an absolute pleasure teaching you all for the past two years. I have appreciated the enthusiasm and commitment that you have shown to me as a teacher and the subject. You have diligently worked hard to consistently improve and yet always maintained a positive attitude as individuals and as a team. Your positive attributes will ensure that each and every one of you is successful in life, whatever path you choose. You will be missed!

On 1 June Hamstead Hall Community Learning Centre became Hamstead Hall Academy. This is the start of a new and exciting chapter in the development of Hamstead Hall. We have already seen some changes to the Hamstead Hall – New minibuses, improvements to our electrical infrastructure and a stronger partnership with Grestone Primary. We have further exciting plans for the next academic year including: improved ICT provision, improvements to our learning environment and more opportunities for our pupils and staff.

For the first time in Hamstead Hall’s history the U19 Boys Table Tennis Team reached the English Schools National Team Finals in Hinckley, Leicestershire in April 2013. They finished joint 3rd overall at the finals. However, being crowned one of the top four U19 boys teams in the country is an unbelievable achievement and one to be very proud of considering we were the only state school to have qualified. Over several months the team embarked on a long but winning journey which seen the team travel the length and breadth of the country. Initially they won the Birmingham School Championships and then went on to win the zone finals in Cirencester and then the Regional finals in Croydon, South London. The team were Dapo Balogun (Year 13), Shaj Rahman (Year 12), Callum Anthrobus (Year 9), Ravi Nar (Year 9), Adam Dadra (Year 8) and Kyeon Aitken (Year 7).

Sport at Hamstead Conor Ford year 11 has recently jumped 1.80 in his recent GCSE moderation and being scouted by Birchfield Harriers he alongside Venise Elliott year7, Nichole Birmingham year 8 and Sefan Anderson year 11 represented West Birmingham in the recent West Midlands competition. Venise Elliott year 7 was also alongside Isaac Manning a year 7 reserve to compete in the Manchester Games. Sky Sports Living For Sport 2012/13 was a huge success, this year we welcomed back Daniel Caines an ex-GB athlete and Tom Davies who is in the current GB Judo squad. They mentored on the day of their visits the current year 12 Btec group and selected year 8 pupils. This was in preparation for the Handball Tournament the pupils successfully planned and held for local primary schools. The BBC came in to film some pupils off the back of our involvement in the 2012 Olympic/Paralympic games. They interviewed the pupils getting an insight into the impact of the events. A DVD is expected soon with our pupils input.

Amneet Jawanela, Neena Aiyla, Amneet Jawanda and Mya Samra. Savannah Higgins, Simran Baines and Dominic Taylor all auditioned for a place at the Birmingham Youth Dance Company and all 3 were accepted. Huge congratulations to them and we look forward to their first professional performance. The current year 10 BTEC group have organised their first dance show and aptly called it ‘The Dance Factor’. The qualifying expeditions will be taking place in July so the year 10 and 13 students need to ensure that they have completed their ‘keeping track booklet/eDofE portfolio’ to ensure that they can attend. Hopefully this will add to the success of DofE at Hamstead Hall ensuring that all students achieve the award.

Next Generation Awards for Year 7

There will be two bands representing Hamstead Hall Academy at this year’s National Rock & Pop Festival at the O2 Academy in Birmingham. This is a fantastic opportunity as the pupils will be performing to over 2000 people at Birmingham’s 3rd Music Venue (behind LG Arena and the NIA). The festival is put on by Solihull Music Service and will include many music acts from around the country. The date of the festival is 13 – 16 July 2013, with both our acts performing on Sunday 14 July 2013.

It has been a successful year where the students should be reflecting back on the year with pride with the amount that they have achieved. A number of students have been having a huge impact within the community with the different element of voluntary work that they have undertaken. It is great to see so many young people working with others to make a real difference. Well done!

Year 11 Aston Football League Champions

GCSE Business Burgers & Learners

The year 11 football team have had a busy calendar spread out through the year. They were involved in a number of cup competitions and were unfortunate to lose 1-0 in the semi-final of the Aston cup at the hands of Aston Manor. They later went on to win the cup so the team were unfortunate to lose in a close fought game. The league was a different story. The year 11 team were dominant throughout and managed to take 10 points from 5 games. They won the league by a clear margin of 5 points. A great way to end their school football careers.

The Science department extends its best wishes to our departing Year 11 and 13 young scientists. We wish you all the very best and look forward to seeing many of the Year 11’s, in sixth form, studying A level sciences!

Opening its doors once more! The cinema had another successful screening last term, showing the final instalment of the Twilight saga. The team of budding entrepreneurs ran the whole event from start to finish and made over £100 profit on the night. Mr Babbage was quoted as saying ‘these students are so enthusiastic and motivated to make it a success, that they no longer need me’. This speaks volumes for the type of students that Hamstead Hall nurtures. Maybe next year we will legitimately be able to issue these students with Academy Awards. Hamstead Hall Academy Awards of course.

We developed a second link with Jan Tinbergen College with 35 of their pupil’s visiting in March 2012 and 35 different pupil’s visiting in March 2013. The visit last month was a wonderful opportunity for our two communities to come together and learn about each other’s lives and education systems, and to appreciate the similarities and differences between each other. Each pupil from The Netherlands was paired with a pupil from Hamstead Hall and they visited lessons with their partner. We also had a bonfire and BBQ one evening with pupils from both schools enjoying the British weather! The visit enhanced pupils’ learning from both countries by; • Extending and enhancing their knowledge and understanding of the historical, geographical, political and economic cultures and heritage of countries other than their own. • Enabling them to develop informed views and opinions and therefore prepare them to be effective and tolerant citizens of the world.

• Celebrating our own countries and other countries cultural and ethnic diversity. • Having real life experiences of different cultures both in and outside of the classroom. • Raising awareness of how the world is changing economically, culturally and technologically and to foster a greater sense of interdependency. So then have you managed to work out what language the words Samen leren belong to and what does they mean? Samen leren is dutch and it means Learning together We are looking forward to further samen leren opportunities, one of which is a planned visit by our students to the Netherland in 2014. Quotes by our visitors: ‘We have enabled pupils to develop informed views and opinions and therefore prepare them to be effective and tolerant citizens of the world.’ ‘Our two schools have promoted a sense of international identity by establishing links and have developed an awareness of the differences and similarities of different cultures.’ Miss Parnell

Tag Rugby Festival On Wednesday 24th April 2013 Hamstead Hall entered the West Midlands MLD Tag Rugby Festival. Our resource base team went to Bromsgrove Rugby Club to compete, the first time they’ve ever participated in a competition. A good day was had by all, our pupils played well and put their training to good use as they finished 3rd overall. A great result but next year we’re going for gold!

In November 2010, a group of 9 teachers from 5 different educational institutions in the Netherlands visited our school to spend time looking closely at the English education system. The specific aim of the visit was for staff to experience life in an English school, experiencing daily school life as well as teaching and learning strategies, behaviour and classroom management and pedagogy. The visit gave our Dutch visitors an opportunity to share their experience and expertise with teachers in our school. From this visit a link was developed with two of the schools from The Netherlands. Sixty pupils from Haarlemmermeer Lyceum visited Hamstead Hall in April 2010.

• Promoting a sense of European identity and developing an awareness of the differences and similarities of different cultures.

Well done to the year 11 team!

Some Year 10 Business students were given the opportunity to make their own unique flavour of burgers, building on the packaging they had developed during PSHE day, then cost the whole project. The initial idea was inspired by one of our industry links Muddy Boots Food Ltd, and has given our students a real insight into this type of organisation. Through the use of all their senses of taste, smell, touch, sight and hearing, we are hoping that all types of learners will be able to relate in some way to the Muddy Boots context and enhance their potential to achieve a high grade in controlled assessment.

Exam Season Comes to an End- Finally!

Year 12 Psychology students were set a 3 week mission of designing and carrying out their own psychology experiment around Hamstead Hall Academy, using pupils and teachers as participants. The purpose of this task was to get student’s prepared for next year’s PSYA4 topic, but also to gain those independent skills required in preparation for university.

Mr C Goray

“I enjoy conducting a psychological experiment because its practical and you get to experience what life would be like as a psychologist”. Nikita Bunger 12 Avon ‘’This experiment is stressful sir! Especially when year 7 and 10 students don’t hand their consent forms back”. Guganpreet Kandola 12 Rea

There are many students in year 12 who use their initiative to find opportunities for themselves that will open doors for them in the future. Students who participated in Envision carried out their projects through the lower school by doing assemblies on issues such as bullying and abuse, showing how enthusiastic they were to spread some much needed positivity to the young people. When the opportunity of participating in The Challenge came around a second time for year 12, many grabbed it and decided that they would spend their summer learning new skills which will equip them for the future. Hands-on activities, team building and public speaking are what they should expect from The Challenge. We wish them good luck! At Hamstead Hall we are all about celebrating the successes of our school, and so in year 12 we’re giving big smiles to Renu Tank, William Waters, Sanjeev Khuttan, and Arvind Mahil. Renu and William have been selected to work on a project as part of the Crest Award. Sanjeev has been selected by the Social Mobility Foundation to do work experience and also be given a place on the mentoring scheme, and Arvind has been chosen to be a student ambassador for the Pure Potential event at Aston University in June. There are so many brilliant awards and opportunities for our students and congratulations to them for grabbing them while they still have the chance. Also, those who began a mentoring scheme with Wragge and Co. last year will be completing it in a few months and Duke of Edinburgh participants received their gold awards this year.

We Love Charity

Year 12 showed how much they love helping those in need by fundraising for Comic Relief. Wearing onesies definitely isn’t a fashion statement or a uniform requirement here at Hamstead Hall, but to raise money for various charities and foundations. Year 12 lead by example and show the rest of the school exactly how important it is to care about the world we live in, especially as they’ll be leaving next year to become adults and- most importantly- the next leaders of this country. Who knows, they might even end up taking over the world!

Time to Say Goodbye, Or Maybe Au Revoir…

Our favourite modern languages teacher is leaving for Italy in the near future. Year 12’s head of year Miss Poulain has reluctantly decided to leave Hamstead Hall to go and teach in the land of pizza and Pisa. She will be missed dearly, and I’m sure that if we could translate this all into French, Spanish, English, and Italian just for her we would. Maybe she’ll stay if we convince her that we need extra lessons to brush up our French… On behalf of the Sixth Form, I’d like to wish everyone a good summer holiday. SJB will be performing at the following venues; • Wednesday 26 June – SoundCity at the MAC Theatre, Edgbaston

Once the selection had occurred, pupils then had a meeting to decide who would be CEO of their company, and who would be in the 4 sub teams within the business. The sub teams were; Business team, Creative team, Events team and Community team. The pupils appointed Joshua McKenzie Spence as their CEO.

• Saturday 29 June – BlastBeat Semi Finals at South & City College, Digbeth Campus

The pupils then had a meeting every Monday and Wednesday after school in the Music Department to plan, organise and create their music event.

• Sunday 14 July – National Rock & Pop Festival, O2 Academy, Birmingham

Their music event ‘Let the Vibes Hit You’ occurred on Saturday 8th June at Hamstead Hall Academy. It was a huge success with the pupils raising over £500 in profit, turning over more than £600. The guest acts they had performing, along with parents, were extremely supportive and complimentary about the Blast Beat project with what they have been doing with the school and the pupils. Pupils donated 25% of their profits to Macmillan Cancer Research to ‘give a little back to the community’. The music event itself was an artist competition, with musical acts from Hamstead Hall Academy and other schools competing for a place in the Blast Beat Regional Finals in Digbeth, Birmingham. Dates for your Diary; On Saturday 29th June, SJB will be performing at South and City College, Digbeth Campus, Birmingham for the Blast Beat Regional Finals. Doors open at 1pm. If they win the competition they will join Kriligee in going to London to compete in the Artist Finals. On Sunday 7th July, Kriligee Music will be going to the 229 Club on Great Ormond St, London, to pitch their business venture in the Business Finals to try and get £2500 investment from Blast Beat by being assessed by a panel of judges. All the pupils have worked extremely hard with this project and I am very proud of them all. The next month is extremely exciting with the regional finals and the London finals coming up, so let’s all be supportive of the pupils from Kriligee Music Events and SJB who are representing Hamstead Hall Academy outside of school!! Back in April, 75 Year 9 pupils were selected to apply to be on the Blast Beat course. This involved a representative from Blast Beat UK coming into school to give pupils an overview of the project. Pupils then filled out an application form, much like a job application. 25 pupils were then selected.

SJB (Soul Jazz Brothers) consisting of Joshua McKenzie Spence, Callum Anthrobus, Dominic Taylor and Romeek Powell, have an extremely exciting few weeks ahead of them. A few famous quotes, from a few famous students:

Year 12 have been on various trips this year all do to with University. A careers day in January proved successful as students were face to face with examples of the type of work they would be doing in University. Students also went to the University of Birmingham in March to look around one of its campuses and they also received an inspirational lecture from some students of the University, and on 28th June there will be another trip to Aston University where over 140 Universities and colleges will be represented to make sure students have plenty of information and Higher Education options to choose from. Year 12s will definitely be feeling spoilt for choice on this trip!

BlastBeat is an award winning music and multimedia business programme offered to young people around the country to teach social entrepreneurial business skills, promote young musicians, and support youth communities on a local and national level. Year 12 Psychology investigation

Years 12 and 13 have safely managed to survive their summer exams and what a relief it must be. There are only 5 weeks left of school and so they will have a full 6 weeks to recover from all of those exams! This does not call for any slowing down now however; year 12 still have a lot of work ahead of them as they begin A2, and year 13 prepare for University and finish off those last few exams. And so the work still continues! We wish the best of luck to them, especially those year 13s that are moving on to University and beyond. Don’t forget about us- we’ll be looking forward to the occasional visits!

More than 1800 local pupils have participated in our competitions with over 100 young leaders involved as referees, umpires, scorers and organisers. Through our School Sport Programme we are also supporting the teaching and learning of physical education in a number of local schools: This will increase as our links with St Mary’s Academy and Teaching School provide further opportunities for staff continual professional development.

Jo Nightingale and staff at St Marys Academy have been working together on a project that uses physical education to increase the achievement in literacy. This research project had a massive impact on teaching and learning and has been shared as a case study nationally through the Youth Sport Trust website.

– Year 9

Paris Visit March 2013 At the end of March some year 10 and year 9 pupils along with Miss Emson, Mr Gicquel and I had the pleasure of spending four days in Paris. We had a rough ferry crossing and a ferry strike on the way back, but apart from that everything went according to plan! Our coach driver Shaun was wonderful and a skilful too-this is an absolute must in Paris. We visited Eurodisney-yay! I wish that i had taken pictures of some of the y10 boys dancing along to the parade in Eurodisney! I really don’t think it would have done their street cred’ any good though! What a wonderful sight to see the Eiffel Tower illuminated at night. I am sure some of you must have some great photos. It was great to see every one getting into the spirit of the trip. The prize for the person who spoke the most French must surely go to Cyann BrownHamilton, who almost rendered the receptionist speechless! We were encouraged to see pupils trying the different food available. You were all great ambassadors for the school. Shaun told you how great you all were. I know that we felt proud that you were with us. I hope this has whetted your appetite for travel to France.

In addition St Augustine’s Catholic Primary school is embarking on a similar research project to develop a ‘maths through physical education’ curriculum. Through this work as a school Hamstead Hall Academy is involved in the National Primary Physical Education Curriculum Project where our link primary schools will be at the forefront to develop and implement of the ‘new’ physical education curriculum and our work will be shared with other local schools. Well done to all pupils who have represented Hamstead Hall in these tournaments. Not only have they shown dedication to practising their skills and improving their knowledge of the game, but also their conduct during tournaments has been exemplary.

In July Hamstead Hall, St Marys, Benson, Cherry Orchard and Oasis Boulton will be representing the area in the Summer City Games.

We have also worked with a number of local schools and deliver teaching and learning through our Forest Schools provision including rock climbing, archery and nature to enhance their learning. Our staff are working alongside staff in other local primary schools to develop new and innovative ways to deliver teaching and learning in physical education.

Rounders Tournaments Hamstead Hall are hosting the Aston Schools Rounders tournaments again this year. Every year the tournaments are well attended and have a positive competitive atmosphere. This year is no exception. Year 9 have shown particular interest in Rounders and we had enough girls attending practices to enter two teams. Both Hamstead Hall teams played extremely well and our ‘a’ team managed to beat 6 other teams from local schools to become Year 9 Aston Schools Rounders Champions 2013.

The winners of our competitions have gone on to represent the Handsworth area at the Birmingham City Games with St Marys, Benson, and Cherry Orchard all achieving the runner-up position in football, hockey and netball.

Hamstead Hall Academy - Year 8 Aston Schools Rounders Champions. Well done girls.

Hamstead Hall continues to develop close links with 17 local primary schools and the Handsworth Association of Schools through the National School Games Network. This term we have organised and hosted a number of sporting festivals and competitions including cricket, multi-skills, football, athletics, tennis and Tri-golf for all children in year 1 to 6. All of these events have been supported by young leaders from our own school to help develop their leadership skills and enable them to act as good role models. Their communication and organisation skills are also enhanced.

Year 8 girls played their Rounders tournament recently, the rain threatened to postpone play for the second year running but luckily after a brief shower we were able to complete all games. Fourteen of our pupils took part. They beat teams from five local schools to meet King Edwards in the final. The final score was Hamstead Hall 8 – King Edwards 3 ½. An outstanding result.

In March, 2013 Hamstead Hall were awarded Youth Sport Trust Gold Partner School Status for the continued commitment they have demonstrated in maintaining and developing the highest quality outcomes for PE and school sport. Achieving this award is testament to Hamstead Hall in making a difference to the lives of young people. The Academy works incredibly hard to create a healthy, happy and cohesive community learning centre that has used the power of P.E and sport to increase student aspirations, inspire learning and raise levels of achievement and ultimately helping young people achieve their full potential in life.

Half of the Year 7 cohort has taken up the fantastic opportunity to spend a week in the Snowdonia National Park. Whilst there, pupils have had the chance to take part in many exciting outdoor and adventurous activities such as high ropes courses, tobogganing and mountain hiking.

Birmingham emerging school rugby tournament, the year 9 boys performed fantastically well, beating many tough opposition along the way before narrowly losing out to Tudor Grange in the final. In April the year 12 indoor cricket team qualified for the cricket finals at Edgbaston. They unfortunately lost in the semi-final to a very strong Warwickshire schools team but it was a valuable experience for the team. Hopefully there will be more strong performances next year to ensure that they reach the finals again. Higher Sports Leaders in years 12 and 13 successfully planned and lead a multi skills event for 180 children from various primary schools.

With the help of Glen Pooler (Glenn Sports) and Robin Hall (Bromsgrove Bears Basketball Club) the football and basketball teams have been progressing fantastically. The Saturday camps also provide opportunities for the dwarf athletes and family members to practise Archery (Beacon Archers Club) and Boccia. There are 2 more camps to run at Hamstead on the 22nd June and 6th July before the team leaves for the USA and confidence is high in anticipation of some great sporting competition. Hamstead Community Cub is also helping to fund some of the coaches’ travel and expenses to ensure the teams are fully support on their trip to the USA. The World Dwarf Games begin on 3rd August 2013 at Michigan State University, East Lansing.

BBC School Report 2013

This March was BBC School Report 2013, as newly appointed Assistant Head of Year; I saw this as an opportunity to get the year 7 involved in something positive.

Eureka is a program aimed to challenge the minds of young individuals through business skills and innovation. A group of 14 talented members of year 9 who were selected to engage on the programme, quickly displayed entrepreneurial skills in designing an innovative product called Oxi-sense.

So they investigated this by interviewing staff and peers about whether they shop online, why and if they realised the implications. The final report then went onto our Hamstead Hall webpage.

Oxi-sense is an early warning system for asthma sufferers and was designed and developed by the students under the guidance of the reputable Peter Morrison - twice British inventor of the year. The product was extensively researched to ensure their design idea was unique; the vibrant group proceeded to take strides forward to bring their idea to reality by contacting several proto typing companies. On the 14th of June 2013 a field trip to a major rapid proto-typing company (CRDM) confirmed the exciting news that the Oxi-sense product will be proto-typed in the coming weeks.

Along with taking part in this national event on BBC School Report day, they were invited to the BBC Studios Mailbox where they did a tour. They were shown where the news was read, Where the radio shows come live from and even got a feel of what it is like to present the weather or news round in front of the green board.

Going forward the students will be contacting software manufacturers and design programmers with a view to adding technical aspects to their design. Ultimately this will lead them to contacting potential customers in preparation of the launch of the product. Carl Blair.

The group of reliable, hardworking year 7 were selected and they decided they wanted to do their report on the high street shops closing down. They researched the number of shops closing down and how many jobs had been lost and found the link seemed to be with customers deciding to shop online.

Well done to; Hannah Aucutt 7 Blythe, Azra Choudhury and Inderveer Kalsi 7 Tame, Dylan Hira 7 Rea and Jagjot Jawanda and Klaudia Piechota 7 Avon. A number of same individuals have also gone on to win the gold for their Next Generation Award and will be representing Hamstead Hall in the semi-finals in July; they will have to compete against other schools to go through to the finals at the Council House.

Year 7 Athletics Champions Last week Year 7 went to Holyhead School to compete in the Aston Schools Athletics competition. The girls competed in track and field events and despite tough competition from five local schools they came out on top to become Year 7 Aston Schools Athletics champions. Languages Day Visit to FRANCE On Friday 24th May, Miss Newton, Miss Jones, the French Assistant Mathilde, Mr Nzayo and I had the pleasure of accompanying 50 Year 7 pupils to what was, for some of them, their first trip to France. The excitement of taking a coach at 1am with your friends, of getting the ferry and the arrival in France, realising that the language they’ve been learning doesn’t only exist in their textbook but is real and used by people over there to communicate! A first stop at a traditional bakery where pupils were shown the way French bread and brioche have been made for hundreds of years. Then, it’s time to flip our crêpes! Pancakes taste even better when you’ve flipped it yourself. Time to chat with your friends and a game of snooker. After a ride down the coast, it’s time to visit the big shopping centre and practise the French we’ve learnt! A long drive back, during which, miraculously, the noise on the coach is no more, having left place to a well deserved rest after such a fun-filled day!
