ANNIE We have been treated to three wonderful performances of the stage musical of ‘Annie ‘this week thanks to Springfield’s drama and music students. The musical is based on the little orphan ‘Annie’, who is charming despite her poor beginnings. The score and lyrics are deeply rooted in emotion and place a great emphasis on the socio-economic climate of America in 1933, during the Great Depression and Roosevelt’s ‘New Deal’ programme. ‘Annie’ is a timeless tale about never giving up hope; it is such a well-known, well-loved musical that appeals to all age groups and we were glad that our production was enjoyed by all who came to watch. ‘Annie’ has been a new and exciting challenge for the cast and musical performers and I would like to thank them all for their hard work. The high levels of energy, patience and enthusiasm, coupled with individual and collective talents, have given rise to amazing shows. We hope the pupils enjoyed their experience as for some it is their first time performing. I learned recently that ‘Tomorrow’ is sung every 20 minutes somewhere in the world! Lynn Brown, Head of Drama

Council of Portsmouth Students’ First Meeting Firstly, to solve any confusion, COPS does not actually link to the Police or anything in that context; it actually stands for Council of Portsmouth Students! The idea is that pupils from schools across Portsmouth come together to create and develop ways to improve our schools. What I love about COPS is that we have the chance to decide what our schools should be like. At the end of the day, we (the pupils) are what makes a school, therefore what we say matters. A few weeks ago, COPS launched its first meeting this term. It was a really exciting atmosphere because everyone attending was so eager to improve Portsmouth schools. We were split into committees (life skills, LGBT, equality, antibullying and disability awareness) and discussed what we as COPS wanted to achieve this year. We encourage feedback from our school council to help us promote ideas to make our school a better place. Harry Stoneman, 9S On Thursday, 1st December 80 pupils and 8 teachers went to The Playhouse Theatre in London on a GCSE Drama trip. The Trip was to see ‘An Inspector Calls’, a play about a family in 1910 celebrating an engagement, who get a visit from a Police Inspector. Their night quickly goes from amazing to awful. The family find out how they have all had links with a girl who has committed suicide, with the play ending with two dramatic twists. We left school for the trip at 3.15pm and eventually got to Covent Garden at 6.10pm. We had 45 minutes to get our tea before we had to walk to the theatre to get ready for the show. The Playhouse Theatre was very small which added to the atmosphere and tension of the show. Everyone really enjoyed the 1 hour 45 minute performance. It really helped us to understand how the play works and will assist us as we study it for our GCSE. We left the theatre on the coach at 9.00pm and got back to school (very tired) at 11.30pm. We would all recommend the play. Jack Ancell, 10F

Autumn Term Product Design Outstanding Work Ashley Woolger’s stencil sign

Congratulations to Ashley Woolger, 10D, for producing a very fitting and expertly designed stencil sign. Ashley persevered and used a great combination of CAD/CAM and recycled materials to create it. Mr Blandford, Head of DT

A polite reminder to parents/carers that while we use social media to publicise school events and news, we ask that you do not use these media to contact the school with queries, questions or concerns. We instead ask that you either write, telephone or email ([email protected]) so that we can respond promptly and confidentially.

Congratulations to 2016 leaver Lottie Kale who has been nominated for the British Red Cross Humanitarian Awards for Children and Young People. Lottie was nominated in recognition of the fabulous work she did in preparation for her trip to Nakuru, Kenya, the inspiration she provided for other pupils and of course the difference she made to so many young people out in Nakuru. Mr Lomas, Head of Enterprise and PDL

Motte and Bailey Castles In Year 7 History lessons we have been learning about motte and bailey castles. We had a homework task set recently to carry out some research into motte and bailey castles; we had the option to create either: a model, an annotated drawing, a written description or a cake. Lots of creative ideas came to the table and most people

made models and cakes with accurate annotations labelling the features of a motte and bailey castle. Everyone had a different interpretation of the homework set which was lovely to see and to be a part of. Grace Anstey, 7E and Madeleine Young, 7E

School Life On Saturday, 3rd of December, we enjoyed a successful day at the UK's biggest fashion show, ‘The Clothes Show’ in Birmingham. We had the opportunity to shop at all the different stalls and booths which sold a range of make-up, fashion clothing and beauty treatments. There was a wide range of styles from vintage to modern. We visited various university stalls too; they displayed the creative designs of students from all over the country. We saw a 3D printed dress, clothing which was made using recycled materials and items that were inspired by everyday products. We met some special guests including Joey Essex, Binky Felstead, Sarah Ashcroft, Billie Faiers and Alex Bowen. We also visited the Fashion Theatre to watch the main fashion show which was hosted by Mark Wright. The show consisted of a trend forecast and gave examples of the different types of fashion available from high street stores. After 27 years of holding the show in Birmingham, this year’s was the largest and the last one to take place there. As part of the special celebrations dancers accompanied the models down the catwalk. Next year ‘The Clothes Show’ will be held in Liverpool, so sadly this was our last trip. Year 11 Textiles Pupils

MAT Consultation

To the left some of the great Year 9 and 10 Textiles project pieces!

Sincere thanks to the parents/ carers who contributed to our recent consultation by attending meetings and/or sending their views and questions to the consultation email address. The governing bodies of the three schools are in the process of reviewing formally the feedback from all stakeholder groups and taking further advice from the school's HR team and legal advisers on potential next steps. We will continue to post updates on the consultation and ongoing process via the school's website. Mr Good, Chair of Governors

Polite Reminder - School Uniform Thank you to the vast majority of parents/carers who support the school by ensuring that their child attends school every day wearing complete and correct uniform. This supports the school to maintain the high standards of uniform and presentation that are expected by the community and limits the time that staff have to waste addressing this issue - time that parents/carers would agree should be focused on teaching and learning. (For reference, our uniform expectations are clearly laid out on the school's website.) We have noticed recently that an increasing number of pupils, notably in the older year groups, are wearing nose-studs and other unacceptable jewellery to school. With respect to jewellery, our uniform policy states, ' a watch and one

pair of plain stud earrings are the only items of jewellery permitted. Studs that enlarge the pierced hole are not permitted. Further body-piercing is not acceptable'. Please do not believe your daughter/son if she/he suggests otherwise! In particular, we would be grateful if you would not allow your child to have additional piercings made during or close to term time as staff will be obliged to ask pupils to remove these additional pieces. Thank you for your support with this matter.
