Editor’s Note It only feels like yesterday that I was in the same predicament I am in now “What to say and how to put it into words” for you to be able to understand me and want to continue to keep reading this message and the pages beyond the message. I have said in the past that education is a must. Last issue I could only provide education on what is out there and available to you if you wish to help further your education. It’s a start, however, not the start I was looking for at the time. I look back now and I am pleased to say to myself I’m growing from it; it’s making me look outside the box. Not to worry, there are plenty of positives to be had. This brings me to You. Yes! The Votes are in! Give yourselves a pat on the back for being proactive and putting pen to paper. My congratulations goes out to all Incoming Executives, I am looking forward to growing with your knowledge, and the change that you will all bring, change is growth and that’s got to be a good thing in my books. To all outgoing Executives, I personally thank you all for helping me get where I am today. Without your time and help to get the Association where it is today, I do not believe I would have grown as much as I have on this path of my life. You have all put your hearts and souls into the Association, I hope you are all proud of the path you have built and developed. You will all be truly and sadly missed. I send you best wishes for the future, and hope to see you all in Dunedin. It is that time of the year already. The Conference program (Draft only) is within these pages and I love the line up. Relevant education and experiences both national and international come together in Dunedin for the 38th Annual NZSSA Conference. All information you require is within these pages. Any questions please feel free to contact Cathy or Martin. Looking forward to seeing you there. Registration will be upon us in the New Year. The following links 'hopefully' will encourage you to move towards obtaining or maintaining registration with the NZSSA. The article and documents are exciting new and are so worth looking at. I personally am excited with this development and encourage you to have a look. http://www.infectioncontroltoday.com/news/2012/06/new-york-state-senate-andassembly-pass-bill-requiring-certification-of-cs-technicians.aspx http://open.nysenate.gov/legislation/bill/A8620c-2011 (Links on the NZSSA website/- ‘Supplyline’) Wishing you all a fun and safe spring into summer. President’s Message Dear Members, Firstly, a huge big thank you to all the members who had their say and voted in the recent executive body voting process. Secondly, congratulations to all the members that make up the new executive body of the NZSSA. The information is in this issue of Supplyline. While it’s been a lengthy process, it is also wonderful to see so many new members prepared to become involved in the Association. I wish you all the best and hope you enjoy your time as an executive member. Not too long now and it will be time for our annual conference, this year in Dunedin. Cathy and Martin have put together an interesting array of speakers, national and international with an equally interesting line up of topics. I’m looking forward to the conference and hope to see many of you there. Remember to wear something tartan for the Friday night dinner if you are staying on for this event. Trish Duff has resigned from the Executive Body and I would like to thank Trish for her contribution to the NZSSA. Students sitting the Advanced Sterilising Technology Course are into their second module, with the third module due to be available from early 2013. The Sterilising Technology Course Level 3 students are working through either the first or second module as well. I hope all the students are enjoying the learning experience and that your study is going as you would like. There have been a number of members sending in their registration information in the recent intake. It’s great to see the commitment from our members in accumulating education hours and completing the documentation. Congratulations to all those members that have worked through this process and successfully achieved and / or maintained their registration with the NZSSA. Thank you and best wishes, Aileen Derby President NZSSA

NZSSA President’s Report 2012 To all NZSSA members, This is my final report as President of the NZSSA after 12 years in this role and prior to that, six years as the NZSSA Secretary. It has been an amazing journey and I have learnt so much along the way and met a huge number of people that are a part of the sterilisation field both here in NZ and overseas. So bear with me as I take a little walk down memory lane as I try to condense what I feel are the highlights of my time as an executive member of the NZSSA. It is important that I acknowledge that these highlights are by no means just my achievements. I have had the privilege to work alongside some truly professional and passionate people in our industry who have worked very hard to move the Association and its members forward. For me, education is key. It is by far the most important tool we have in our units today. The Sterilising Technology Course initially set up and administered by the then executive body in the 1980’s has become a vital tool in giving our personnel the skills and knowledge they need and has assisted greatly in working towards achieving recognition as a professional group within healthcare in NZ. In 2005, the executive body worked in conjunction with The Open Polytechnic in Wellington for them to administer this course, while the NZSSA provided the technical knowledge. At the time it was also recognised that an advanced course would be required in the future. Finally this year, that particular idea came to fruition and we now have the Level 5 Advanced Sterilising Technology Course for our members. In time I hope that there is a degree level Sterilising Course for our members and I believe that this is entirely possible. Over the years the annual conferences have gone from strength to strength. It is entirely appropriate to mention and thank the amazing support the NZSSA has enjoyed from the many medical & surgical companies over the years. Without this support we would not have had the invaluable information and input from overseas speakers and leaders from within the sterilisation field. The knowledge and different ideas are what challenge us to think about what we are doing; could we do it a different way and what are the benefits for our units and ultimately the patients in our healthcare facilities. One of the benefits to our conferences has come about when our members take on board the organising of our conferences. While I acknowledge that there is a certain level of stress involved in organising a conference, the feeling when it is all over and has proven to be a success is amazing and well worth the work and stress involved. Standards play a huge part today in our work and in every part of what we do in our units. Of all the changes that have occurred over the years I have been involved in the sterilisation profession, the introduction of standards and their requirements, has been the biggest challenge. We are very fortunate in NZ to be able to network amongst ourselves relatively easily and for me this has been invaluable – the sharing of ideas and practices has been a huge help. For the last few years NZSSA members have been able to register under the NZSSA. Working towards registration under the Health Practitioner’s Competency Assurance Act came about primarily because an executive member from the South Island asked a question at an executive meeting relating to certifying staff members. It was realised early on that this would involve a huge commitment from the Executive Body but at no time was it ever considered to be too much work. Today we have a large number of members registered and from the applications I have processed it is wonderful to see so many committed members accumulating their education hours. As I and others leave the Executive body, it is with the knowledge that this particular journey is not yet reached its end. The incoming executive body I hope will carry this on to a positive conclusion. Supplyline has definitely changed over the years. From a four page pamphlet that was published spasmodically over the year to a 20 + page journal with four issues every year. A huge achievement and one we can all be proud of. Each editor has added their own style to the cover and the contents, but all have worked hard to ensure that each journal had and has stimulating and relevant information. As I mentioned earlier in my report, the achievements of the NZSSA over the last few years have not been a solo effort on my part. I have had the pleasure to work alongside others in the executive body, both present and past that are true professionals. Their dedication and commitment to sterilising personnel in NZ has been amazing and I thank each and every one of them for their hard work and support. To the incoming executive body, I wish you all the best in this and coming terms of office. I hope you find the experience as an executive member as rewarding as I have and that you continue to move forward the professionalism of sterilising personnel in NZ. To NZSSA members, I thank you also for your support and trust that you will continue to support the NZSSA as it moves forward. Never forget why we do what we do – it is for our patients – each and every one of them. I wish you all the best. Thank you Aileen Derby President NZSSA 2012

NZSSA Secretary’s Report 2011 - 2012 It is with a mixture of pleasure and regret that I submit my 2011-2012 report to the membership of the New Zealand Sterile Service Association, this being my final report as Secretary. As you will see from the Correspondence Report, there has been a steady flow of correspondence sent and received throughout the year, with a significant volume of the correspondence on Conference planning and the Election of new Executive. There have been 3 resignations from Executive members received: the end of 2011, Garry Gorham and Alison Stewart both representing the North Island Chapter and July 2012, Trish Duff representing the South Island Chapter. As nominations for 2012 – 2015 term of office were being requested, it was decided that vacancies would not be replaced. The election of the Executive for the 2012-2015 term of office has been unique as we have never received so many nominations for Executive positions: 2 nominations for President and 8 nominations for North Island Chapter (1 nomination withdrawn prior to election). The implementation process for a postal election utilising ‘Supplyline’ has seen a record number of votes being received from members and I thank those members for taking the time to vote. There is a number of long servicing Executive members who are not seeking re-nomination onto the Executive: Aileen Derby (President); Lorraine Arrowsmith (North Island Chapter); Jill Parker (South Island Chapter and myself (Secretary). Our long servicing Treasurer, Daniel Phillips is also stepping down, with Alison Stewart being nominated and accepted by Executive to replace Daniel as the NZSSA Treasurer. On a personal note I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Executive Members, past and present for their support and assistance throughout my 20years on the Executive as a South Island Chapter Executive member and as the Secretary, and I would especially like to thank Aileen and Daniel who have been a pleasure to work with. It has been an honour to have worked with a dedicated group of people to advance the Profession and Practices of Sterile Services over the years and it is with a sense of achievement and pride that I pass on the Secretary role to Mark Casey. My very best wishes the in-coming Executive and I wish them well in all their endeavours on behalf of the NZSSA. Hope to see many of you at the NZSSA Conference being held in Dunedin on the 21st, 22nd and 23rd November. Kind regards Cathy Rackley NZSSA Secretary

The Associations finances continue in a very healthy state, as the audited figures will show later in the year. I am happy to be able to hand the books to the new Treasurer showing the balances they do. As this is my last report as Treasurer I would like to acknowledge the great working relationship between the President, Secretary and I these last 12 years. I wish our replacements the same team spirit. I am very pleased that Alison Stewart has agreed to take my place. Alison is well known to most members and it is fitting that she will be back as a member of the Executive and your new Treasurer. I am proud to look back, almost 40 years, to this organization’s beginnings and to see what has been achieved since then. Continuing effort, over decades, by dedicated individuals is the cause and also the challenge for those in the decades ahead. I wish the new Executive well as they settle in and then take the NZSSA on to greater heights. Daniel Phillips Treasurer
