He is now two shy of tying Mats Sundin and Joe Nieuwendyk for 21st. Iginla passed Bobby Hull (1,170) for sole possession of 49th place on the NHL’s all-time points list with an assist on Oct. 21. Iginla has 562 goals and 614 assists for 1,176 points in 1,327 career games. Only Jaromir Jagr has more goals among active players and only Jagr and Joe Thornton have more points. He won the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy as the NHL’s leading goal scorer in both 2002 and 2004 and captured the 2002 Art Ross Trophy as the league’s scoring leader. SAVING GRACE Semyon Varlamov stopped 89-of-91 shots (.978%) over a two-game stretch from Oct. 28-30, the most saves ever by an Avalanche goaltender over a two-game span. Only two goalies in franchise history, Quebec's Ron Tugnutt and Jacques Cloutier, ever stopped more shots in a two-game stretch. Scott Gordon made 49 saves for Quebec at the Colisee on Feb. 4, 1990 vs. Boston. • Varlamov stopped all 40 shots in a 5-0 victory over the Islanders on Oct. 30 for his first shutout of the season. It was Varlamov’s 14th career shutout and 10th as a member of the Avalanche, moving him into sole possession of third place on the franchise’s all-time list behind Patrick Roy (37) and David Aebischer (13). Varlamov’s 40 saves were his most-ever in a shutout, topping his previous high of 34 stops in a 1-0 overtime win against the Predators on March 30, 2013 at Pepsi Center. Varlamov’s effort was the first 40-save shutout by an Avalanche goaltender since Nov. 15, 2000, when Roy made 41 stops in a 3-0 win at Anaheim. In fact, Varly posted just the fourth 40-plus save shutout in Avalanche history (since 1995-96). BRIERE TALLIES 300TH IN DRAMATIC FASHION Daniel Briere scored his 300th NHL goal on Oct. 13 at Boston, lighting the lamp with under a second left in regulation to give the Avalanche a 2-1 victory. Briere became the first player in Avalanche/Nordiques history to score a game-winning goal with one second left in regulation. Prior to that, Colorado's latest game-winning goal was scored at 19:52 of the third period – a mark set by Jan Hejda on April 13, 2013 vs. Vancouver. Briere’s goal was only the fourth last-second tiebreaking goal (in regulation) over the last eight seasons. The other buzzer beaters since 2007-08: Brad Richards (Dec. 17, 2011 at Phoenix), Drew Doughty (Feb. 1, 2012 vs. Columbus) and David Krejci (Oct. 24, 2013 vs. San Jose). Briere became the 16th active player to reach the 300-goal milestone. MAC SURPASSES 1,000 PIM Cody McLeod surpassed 1,000 career penalty minutes on Oct. 24 vs. Vancouver. He became the first player in Avalanche history and sixth in franchise history to reach 1,000 PIM. CENTRAL DIVISION CHAMPS The Avalanche tied their franchise record with 52 wins and posted their-second highest point total ever (112) en route to winning the Central Division title in 2013-14. Colorado finished 52-22-8, exactly 26-11-4 at home (56 points) and 26-11-4 on the road (56 points). The Avs set a franchise mark for road wins on their way to finishing with the best road record in the NHL. The Avs won their ninth division championship since moving to Denver, their first since 2002-03. It marked Colorado/Quebec’s 11th division title in franchise history, which includes an NHL-record streak of nine consecutive division crowns from 1995 to 2003. AWARD-WINNING SEASON The Avalanche took home three individual trophies at the 2014 NHL Awards Show in Las Vegas on June 24. Nathan MacKinnon won the Calder Trophy as the league’s top rookie, Ryan O’Reilly won the Lady Byng Trophy for sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct, while Patrick Roy won the Jack Adams Award as the coach of the year. The Avs and Boston Bruins were the only teams to produce three winners. Semyon Varlamov was a finalist for the Vezina Trophy, making Colorado one of only two teams with four awards finalists (Tampa Bay was the other).
