Caroline Adderson ELLEN IN PIECES ______________________________________________________________________________ “Teeming with emotion to the last word.” – Quill & Quire (starred review) “I think I fell in love with Ellen McGinty on page one.” – Toronto Star “The novel we’ve all been waiting for.” – Picklemethis.com “Rarely has a… character been brought to life with such funny and passionate exuberance.” – Lynn Coady, author of Hell Going “Sexy, searing, and very, very funny.” – Annabel Lyon, author of The Sweet Girl Ellen McGinty is funny, impulsive, sexy, and chock full of regrets. In her forties, with her two daughters single-handedly raised, she sells the house she settled for in her long ago divorce and sets out to rediscover the artistic life abandoned in her youth. In the exquisitely written and affecting Ellen in Pieces, we meet the people Ellen loves and watch as she manages to help shape their fates into something beautiful. Her younger daughter Yolanda, for example, who discovers she’s pregnant after a chance encounter. Ellen’s estranged father, whose surprise visit opens the wound of her marriage. And her complicated friend Celine, out of loyalty to whom Ellen gives up the chance to discover whether the French man they met on a recent trip is her perfect match. As Ellen settles into middle age, she finally slips the shell of her old life and steps out for a first, tentative foray into real contentment – directly into the path of two great loves: a dog bearing an uncanny resemblance to Anton Chekhov, and Matt, a man 20 years her junior. Ellen in Pieces then explodes into multiple points of view, allowing us to see the effect this one ordinary and extraordinary woman has on the people who are part of her tumultuous life. ______________________________________________________________________________ An exciting new series by the author of Owl and the Japanese Circus and Owl and the City of Angels, Kincaid Strange will appeal to fans of Kim Harrison, Jim Butcher, Diana Rowland, and Carrie Vaughn. Kincaid Strange isn’t your average Voodoo practitioner. For starters, she lives in Seattle. With raising zombies outlawed throughout the continental US, Kincaid now ekes out a living running séances up at the university. Students with more money than sense are desperate for guitar lessons with the ghost of a deceased Seattle grunge rocker – who happens to be Kincaid’s on-and-off roommate. If she doesn’t book enough ‘entertainment’ séances between now and Halloween to cover rent until Christmas – when the guilt-driven requests flood in – she might as well kiss her apartment goodbye. Her priorities change when a stray zombie turns up in her neighbourhood bar: Cameron Wight, an up-and-coming artist with no recollection of how he died or who raised him. Adding to her stray zombie problem, a powerful nuisance of a ghost starts tailing Kincaid, convinced she’s stolen something of his. A further wrench is thrown in when a brutal serial killer begins targeting zombies and practitioners in Seattle’s infamous Underground City, a paranormal hub. When the new police captain refuses to chase the killer, Kincaid is asked by the City’s oldest and foremost zombie to investigate. Raising ghosts and zombies is one thing, but finding a murderer? She’s broke, not stupid… Reluctance aside, Kincaid ends up in the killer’s sights and needs to solve the murder spree before she becomes his next victim. As the saying goes, when it rains it pours – especially in Seattle. Ann Y.K. Choi PAPER SWAN ______________________________________________________________________________ Dreams and tradition collide in a convenience store owned by a Korean immigrant family. “Fragments of memory, like glitter, captured our final few moments in Korea. I remember being mean to Chun-Ha because we were dressed in matching outfits, white shirts and blue-and-black checkered overalls; watching my dad standing among the men, smoking cigarettes, looking up at the sky and commenting on the good flying weather; thinking my mother and aunts looked like clowns, their mascara smeared by tears; smelling the faint scent of cinnamon on my grandmother’s breath as she slipped a coin into my hand and told me it had magical powers to keep me safe, no matter where I was.” Mary’s mother has no doubt when it comes to her only daughter’s future: she will first give up her foolish dream of becoming a writer, then graduate from university and marry a young Korean man with good prospects who will lift her out of the drudgery of running a downtown convenience store. The sacrifices she and her husband have made – the long hours of toil for little money, the loss of their traditional ways, the surrender even of the Korean names for her two children (Yu-Rhee and Chun-Ha) – will be more than repaid by future success. But Mary, unlike her more compliant brother Josh, chafes at her family’s expectations. Can’t her striving mother see that she has ambitions of her own? When her mother reveals that she has a secret sister she had long ago lost hope of ever seeing again, Mary discovers that her family’s Korean past is not quite as idyllic as she was led to believe. Disconcerting stories of forbidden love and hints of domestic violence start to colour her view of romantic love. As Mary’s own furtive interest in Mr. Allen, her attentive high school English teacher, takes on new complications, a promising Korean suitor, Joon-Ho, arrives and seems to offer both mother and daughter the opportunity for happiness. But as Mary learns, appearances aren’t always what they seem, and deceit sometimes brings catastrophic consequences. Vividly capturing the struggles of a family caught between two cultures, Paper Swan is a beautiful debut novel and evocative coming-of-age story in the tradition of Monica Ali’s Brick Lane and Jamie Ford’s Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet. ANN Y.K. CHOI, originally from Chung-Ju, South Korea, immigrated to Canada in 1975. Trevor Cole HOPE MAKES LOVE ______________________________________________________________________________ “In his US debut, Canadian novelist Cole delivers a cagey satirical noir… Wicked humour glints kitchen-knife bright… ” – Publishers Weekly on Practical Jean “Exceeding the predictable by a long shot, this will beguile readers possessing a sardonic streak as well [as] those who appreciate gallows humour.” – Booklist on Practical Jean Hope Makes Love is the story of a former professional baseball player who embarks on a scheme to make his ex-wife fall in love with him again, and the damaged young woman who uses tricks of the mind to help him. Cole, with his signature wit and brilliant characterizations, trains his clever eye on love – on what makes it start, what makes it stop, how equipped or not some may be for it, and whether or not we can ever truly understand its baffling nature. In doing so, he has given us a glimpse into the depths of two broken hearts; one heart is trying to retrieve what once made it happy, and one is trying to deny what is making it happy now. Zep Baker, former professional baseball player wants to recapture the love of his ex-wife Emily and reunite with her. With the help of PhD neurology researcher Dr. Hope Riopelle, who has a personal vested interest in what their experiment will produce, Zep sets out to ‘brainwash’ his wife into loving him again. Unfurling in only a couple of weeks, but full to the brim with both characters’ backstories, motivations, fears, and hopes, Hope Makes Love is immediate, poignant, and riveting. A unique portrait of two extremes, Hope Makes Love questions the nature of love. Can love be made real if it is believed in enough? Can love be real without belief in its existence? TREVOR COLE’s most recent novel Practical Jean was shortlisted for the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize and won the Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour. His previous novels, Norman Bray in the Performance of His Life and The Fearsome Particles, garnered enormous acclaim – with two Governor General’s Award shortlistings, a Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Best First Book (Can-Carib region) shortlisting, and two longlistings for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award between them. Kicked out by his fed up girlfriend, he goes on the hunt for cheap accommodation and stumbles upon the ideal set up – a bedroom in the home of Amy, an attractive psychology student who has been abandoned by her roommate. Not only does Amy have a surprisingly affordable penthouse apartment with rooftop patio and a fridge full of high-quality comestibles, she also has a mysterious neighbor, Eldrich, who appears to be home all day, smoking weed and receiving an odd assortment of visitors. Before long, John is availing himself of Eldrich’s pot, food, wine, etc., and notices that these staples are provided gratis by friends and acquaintances who rely on Eldrich for spiritual guidance. That’s when John, atheist and misanthrope, decides to start a new-age cult with Eldrich as guru. And so The Answer Institute is born. With Amy as a partner in the enterprise, the cult grows exponentially, attracting a wide range of broken, strange, spiritually hungry individuals, including an obscenely wealthy Singaporean ex-pat, a psilocybin-dealing hippie, a conservative mom mourning the death of her only child, and the star of a popular sci-fi TV show. But the more successful the Institute gets, the more it spirals out of control. Pauline Holdstock THE HUNTER AND THE WILD GIRL ______________________________________________________________________________ “A great work of fiction.”

– The Globe and Mail on Into the Heart of the Country “A master of pace, she pulls the skin of this novel as tight as a drum so that you can feel chaos in the offing but don’t know what it is until it’s on top of you… This well-executed novel can sit comfortably on any bookshelf alongside work by A.S. Byatt and Jane Urquhart.” – The Vancouver Sun on Beyond Measure A feral child roams the dense vegetation of 19th century Languedoc, naked and savage, stealing food from remote farmyards, and trying to avoid all contact with people. But on one of her thieving missions to a remote home, she is startled to encounter a wolf; the animal poised and lifelike but simultaneously, strangely, devoid of life. Puzzled but hungry, she returns again and is surprised by Pierre Rouff, a taxidermist who prefers the company of the animals he is preserving to the townspeople of Freyzus. Pierre had committed a horrific act, accidentally killing his only son, and his guilt and grief, and the impossibility of transcendence in some things, have caused him to withdraw from society. What follows is a fascinating and engrossing novel about trust and betrayal, companionship versus solitude, the way that stories can be embroidered and misunderstood, and the fundamental urge to be alive and free. In the profound isolation of, and then connection between the girl and the hunter, and the author’s visceral treatment of grief, the world is transformed. Giller Prize shortlisted author Pauline Holdstock has created an atmospheric and extraordinary world – reminiscent of Marcel Pagnol’s Manon of the Spring and Jean de Florette – and characters so wholly original that they become unforgettable. PAULINE HOLDSTOCK’s most recent novel, Into the Heart of the Country, was critically acclaimed and longlisted for the 2012 Scotiabank Giller Prize. Her previous novel, Beyond Measure, won the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize and was shortlisted for the Scotiabank Giller Prize, the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize and the City of Victoria Butler Book Prize. Robert Hough THE MAN WHO SAVED HENRY MORGAN ______________________________________________________________________________ “Hilarious and penetrating.” – The Globe and Mail on Dr. Brinkley’s Tower “Just about perfect.” – Kirkus (starred) on The Final Confession of Mabel Stark “Hough’s greatest skill… is as an old-fashioned storyteller.” – The National Post on Dr. Brinkley’s Tower A raucous retelling of the legend of Henry Morgan from a writer critics call “a master storyteller.” The year is 1664. Benny Wand, a young board-game hustler, is arrested in London for illegal gaming and deported to Port Royal, Jamaica, a settlement commonly referred to as ‘the wickedest city on earth.’ After arriving on the island, Wand is forced by depleted circumstances to join a raid on the Spanish city of Villahermosa. The mission is a blood-soaked success, during which Wand attracts the attention of the mission’s leader, a Welsh seaman named Henry Morgan. A famous privateer, Morgan is the exact opposite of Wand: he’s well bred, educated, and dedicated to the service of God, King, and Country. Yet Wand and Morgan also happen to be the two best chess players in Jamaica, and they develop an unlikely friendship through the game. As Morgan is corrupted by his increasingly sordid attacks on Spanish cities, he slowly becomes Wand’s greatest enemy. To defeat his once-ally, Wand will have to help Morgan in the most savage and unexpected way possible. This is blistering and bawdy storytelling at its best. ROBERT HOUGH’s novels have been nominated for numerous awards, including the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize, the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award, the Trillium Book Award, and the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize. His most recent novel, Dr. Brinkley’s Tower, was longlisted for the Scotiabank Giller Prize and was a finalist for the Governor General’s Literary Award. He lives in Toronto. Frances Itani TELL ______________________________________________________________________________ “Masterful… To read Tell is to drop seamlessly into the lives of [characters] so vivid and well drawn readers will celebrate their victories and cry alongside their anguish… A triumph of the human spirit that resonates almost physically in the reader… Evocative and indelible.” – Toronto Star A tour de force about the aftermath of the Great War: a novel of secrets withheld and secrets revealed, from the author of the Commonwealth Prize-winning international sensation Deafening. In 1919, only months after the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, the men and women of the small Canadian town of Deseronto struggle to recover from wounds, both visible and hidden. Kenan, a young soldier who has returned from the war shell-shocked and disfigured, confines himself to his small house on the Bay of Quinte, venturing outside only under the cover of night. His wife, Tress, attempting to adjust to the trauma that has overwhelmed her husband and altered their marriage, seeks advice from her Aunt Maggie. But Maggie and her husband Am, who cares for the town clock tower, have sorrows of their own, and heartbreaks that lie unacknowledged between them. While Am’s unease increases, Maggie finds joy in her friendship with Zel, an independent and eccentric widow who runs the local boarding house, and in the Choral Society started by Lukas, an enigmatic musician who has arrived in town from an unspoken part of war-torn Europe. Am, troubled by the widening gulf in his marriage, visits Kenan weekly, though the two often sit in silence. Kenan begins to make forays after dark, onto the newly frozen bay where he skated as a boy. Maggie does her best to counsel Tress, but spends much of her time at Zel’s boarding house, rehearsing for the upcoming New Year’s Eve concert. While reconnecting with the music of her past, and influenced by a chance meeting with the great diva, Nellie Melba, Maggie rediscovers a part of herself that had long ago been set aside. As the decade draws to a close, the lives of these characters become more and more entwined and startling revelations surface as layers of silence begin to crumble. Tell is a deeply moving, emotionally rich story about the burdens of the past. Told with narrative power and grace, it is a beautifully rendered reminder that the secrets we bury to protect ourselves can also be the cause of our undoing. Each of us must decide what to share and what to hide, and how our actions will lead us into the future. FRANCES ITANI is the author of several novels including Requiem, chosen by The Washington Post as one of 2012’s top fiction titles of the year, and the #1 bestseller Deafening, which won a Commonwealth Writers’ Prize, was shortlisted for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award, and was published in 17 territories. Clifford Jackman THE WINTER FAMILY ________________________________________________________________________ “Clifford Jackman’s novel somehow manages to be both traditional and eerily unique. Think of it as a combination of High Noon and The Shining.” – Jeff Guinn, author of Glorious and bestseller The Last Gun Fight “Brutal. Nihilistic. Extreme. Clifford Jackman’s debut, The Winter Family, lit my synapses up like a pinball machine… Jackman throws nine kinds of hell at you in this book, unloading with both barrels, and never lets up the intensity.” – Craig Davidson, author of Cataract City The Winter Family is a bracing Western noir that traces a group of ruthless outlaws from its genesis during the American Civil War all the way to a final bloody stand in the Oklahoma territories. Over the better part of three decades, the members of the Winter family traverse America’s harsh, untamed terrain, both serving and opposing the violent advance of civilization. Among its twisted specimens, the Winter family includes psychopathic killer Quentin Ross, the mean and moronic Empire brothers, the impassive ex-slave Fred Johnson, and the dangerous child prodigy Lukas Riddle. But at the malevolent centre of it all is their cold, hardened leader, Augustus Winter – a man with an almost pathological resistance to the rules of society and a preternatural gift for butchery. From their service as political thugs in a brutal Chicago election, to their work as bounty-hunters in the deserts of Arizona, there’s a hypnotic logic to Winter’s grim borderland morality that plays out, time and again, in pools of blood. The Winter Family is an epic, cinematic, compelling page-turner about the dark implications of progress. As the novel unfolds we see the Winter family at the height of their outlaw ways. Election rigging, scalpings, waterboardings, beatings, riots, and violence, all find their way into the tale, but so too does the formation of Augustus – how he became the man he is and the questions that haunt him. Can a man ever change? What is real freedom? CLIFFORD JACKMAN was born in Deep River and raised in Ottawa. He received a BA from York University, an MA from Queen’s University, and a JD from Osgoode Hall Law School. He practises law in Richmond Hill and counts Stephen King and Cormac McCarthy among his strongest literary influences. Clifford will be Knopf Canada’s New Face of Fiction for 2015. Susan Juby REPUBLIC OF DIRT ______________________________________________________________________________ Praise for Home to Woefield: “Genuinely funny and tremendously charming.” – National Post “A wonderful juxtaposition of parody and playfulness… A joyous book about someone living out a fantasy, confronting illusions, and attempting to make a dream come true.” – New York Journal of Books Prudence Burns is an overly idealistic Brooklyn girl who has inherited a derelict plot of land named Woefield Farm. Her motley crew of farm hands consists of Earl, an elderly, reclusive bluegrass legend; Seth, an agoraphobic, heavy metal blogger in early recovery; and Sara, an 11-year old girl with a flock of elite show poultry. When Prudence is felled by a thyroid condition and refuses to see anyone but a mysterious alternative health practitioner, things go from bad to worse. Sara, the moral and emotional centre of the group, is removed from the farm after she’s left alone with a dangerous neighbourhood kid. But her newly separated parents are so busy indulging their loathing for one another that they do a lousy job of looking after her. So begins the valiant attempt to get Sara back to Woefield. Efforts are complicated by a renegade mule, attempts to turn a hideously ugly child’s playhouse into a high yield roadside farm stand, two bizarre holiday parties, and an electrical station’s worth of crossed wires. And there’s a serious mismatch between competence and pride; specifically, not enough of the former and too much of the latter. Will Prudence get well? Will Seth finally lose his virginity to the drama teacher who seduced him in 11th grade? Will Earl rescue Sara from the danger her mother puts her in each night? And will anyone, ever, admit they might be wrong? Told in four highly distinct, unforgettably hilarious, and sometimes heartbreaking voices, Republic of Dirt is about what happens when passions collide with pride and what it takes to save each other, our small part of the planet, and ourselves. SUSAN JUBY’s debut adult novel Home to Woefield was shortlisted for the Canadian Library Association Book of the Year Award and the Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour, and optioned for television. Thomas King THE BACK OF THE TURTLE ______________________________________________________________________________ “One of the first rank of contemporary Native American writers – [and] a gifted storyteller of universal relevance.” – Publishers Weekly on Green Grass, Running Water Critically acclaimed novelist Thomas King returns with a cockeyed Garden of Eden for our times – a mischievous tour de force about destruction, salvation, and the resilience of life. When Gabriel Quinn, a corporate scientist, abandons his laboratory and returns to the Smoke River Indian Reserve where his mother and sister lived, he finds that almost everyone in the community has disappeared. Even the sea turtles are gone, poisoned by an environmental disaster known as The Ruin. The only signs of life Gabriel finds are a stray dog named Soldier, an enigmatic, bossy woman named Mara, a kid named Sonny who runs a dilapidated motel with his absentee Dad, and Dad’s brother, a rascally old soul named Nicholas Crisp. The fact is, Gabriel was the chief architect of the disaster and he has returned to Smoke River first to witness the disaster he created and then to drown himself in Samaritan Bay. But as he prepares to let the water take him, he sees a young girl in the waves. Plunging in, he saves her, and soon finds himself saving others. Who are these people, with their long black hair and almond eyes, who seem to have fallen from the sky? The Back of the Turtle draws on Christian and Native mythology and on King’s own unmistakable instinct for mischief to give us a cockeyed Garden of Eden for our times. Showcasing King’s brilliant wit and trademark wordplay, this is a funny, smart, sometimes confounding, and altogether unforgettable tale of betrayal, salvation, and the mysterious resilience of life. THOMAS KING is the bestselling, award-winning author of several novels including Medicine River, which was shortlisted for the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize; Green Grass, Running Water, which was called a “first class work of art” by Newsweek and compared to the work of Mark Twain; and Truth and Bright Water, which earned starred reviews in Publishers Weekly (“extraordinarily moving”) and Kirkus Reviews (“masterful”). King’s most recent book is the #1 Canadian bestseller The Inconvenient Indian, which won the 2014 RBC Taylor Prize, the BC National Award for Canadian Non-Fiction, and the 2013 Libris Award and was hailed by Joseph Boyden as “destined to become a classic of historical narrative.” Born and raised in California, Thomas King is of Cherokee and Greek descent, has worked in Native Studies programs in Utah, California, and Minnesota, and is the recipient of a Western American Literary Association Lifetime Achievement Award. FICTION

Lynne Kutsukake THE TRANSLATION OF LOVE ______________________________________________________________________________ A masterful debut novel about friendship and love translated across cultures and borders. In 1947, American-occupied Tokyo was in tumult. Democracy was the new rage, though the wounds of war were fresh. General MacArthur presided over its citizens and invited them – indeed all Japanese – to write to him. And write they did. MacArthur received over 500,000 letters: letters of entreaty, rage, gratitude, complaint, even adoration. Using that kernel of truth, Lynne Kutsukake invented the character of 12-year-old Fumi Tanaka. Fumi’s older sister Sumiko has disappeared into the world of Ginza bars, and Fumi is determined to find her. She enlists the help of her new classmate Aya, forcibly repatriated from Canada after the war, to write to MacArthur for help. The letter is delivered into the reluctant hands of Corporal Matt Matsumoto, a Japanese-American serving with the Occupation forces, whose endless job is translating the letters. Frustrated with Matt’s progress, the girls take matters into their own hands, venturing into the dark and dangerous world of the black market and dancehalls. They’re unaware that their teacher, Kondo Sensei, moonlights as a translator of love letters, and that he holds a key to Sumiko’s safe return. In the tradition of Colum McCann’s Let The Great World Spin and Claire Messud’s The Emperor’s Children, The Translation of Love uses an ensemble cast of characters to immerse the reader in a particular time and place. Drawing on years of research, Kutsukake presents a side of war seldom seen – that of the newly conquered, trying to find their way; the uneasy alliances, the heartbreaking choices. The Translation of Love is a riveting, intricately constructed novel about secrets and dreams, identity and the search for home, and finding yourself where you least expected to. LYNNE KUTSUKAKE was a finalist for the Journey Prize in 2010 for ‘Mating,’ and a nominee in 2009 for ‘Away.’ Her short fiction has appeared in The Dalhousie Review, Grain, The Windsor Review, Ricepaper, and Prairie Fire. A third generation Japanese Canadian, she worked for many years as a librarian at the University of Toronto, specializing in Japanese materials. RIGHTS SOLD: World excl. Alen Mattich HEART OF HELL ______________________________________________________________________________ “Della Torre is one of a number of dark, witty characters trying to survive amid desperate times… Mattich mines Yugoslavia’s past – secret police misdeeds, regional divisions, and simmering old scores – and the country’s shaky reality in the early '90s.” – The Chronicle Herald on Zagreb Cowboy It’s 1991 and Yugoslavia’s civil war has started, with Vukovar, on Croatia’s eastern border, and Dubrovnik, the medieval coastal fortress, besieged by the Yugoslav army and Serb auxiliaries. But Marko della Torre has another and more immediate preoccupation. The former Yugoslav secret policeman – now an officer with independent Croatia’s military intelligence – finds himself in a precarious position after the body of an American agent is discovered bound and washed up on an Italian beach – the third American agent to have been murdered. The agents had been sent to kill a killer, a professional Yugoslav assassin called the Montenegrin, with della Torre’s help. Another American team is now determined to finish the job and to bring to justice those who were held responsible for the Americans’ murders. They coerce della Torre, himself under suspicion, to ferret out his sometime partner, Julius Strumbic, who has gone to ground somewhere in Dubrovnik and whom they hold responsible for murderous treachery. With the help of a nerveless Englishwoman, della Torre breaks through the Dubrovnik blockade to find Strumbic, and together the two men go on the run to find out why the Americans are so desperate to kill the Montenegrin – and them. Their flight takes them to the Yugoslav dictator Tito’s former right-hand man in his Belgrade retirement. And from there to the heart of hell, the now near-obliterated Vukovar where della Torre finally discovers the links between the Montenegrin, the assassination of Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme, nuclear secrets and the Americans’ interest. And where he is briefly and poignantly reunited with his pregnant ex-wife and her British lover, both doctors serving in the town’s ill-fated hospital. A dark propulsive thriller reminiscent of both Tarantino and Hiassen, Heart of Hell is tense, addictive, and impossible to put down. ALEN MATTICH is the author of Zagreb Cowboy and Killing Pilgrim, the first two Marko della Torre novels. Based in London, he writes for Dow Jones and The Wall Street Journal. Sarah Mian WHEN THE SAINTS ______________________________________________________________________________ “When the Saints is a page-turner full of frankly enviable lines, but Sarah Mian is musing on deep matters: the nature of historical damage in families… A Winter’s Bone for Nova Scotia.” – Padma Viswanathan, author of The Toss of a Lemon and The Ever After of Ashwin Rao Is it possible to redeem a family name that has been spoken as a curse word for generations? A decade after being cast off to live with strangers, Tabby Saint returns to Solace River, Nova Scotia, to find her childhood home is dilapidated and deserted. She quickly latches onto the lonely tavern-keeper, West, who informs her that her family was run out of town. Tabby heads out to nearby Jubilant to find the fragments of her family: her addict sister, Poppy, and her two young kids; her brothers, Bird and Jackie, one crippled by a vicious attack and the other holding onto a dangerous grudge against the men responsible; a threadbare version of the bulletproof mother she remembers; and an ailing father, a man so vile he is unworthy of forgiveness even on his deathbed. Irreverent and mouthy as they ever were, the Saints are still a lightning rod for trouble. When a new storm arises, Tabby must choose whether to stay or run back the way she came. Told through characters whose hard edges hide hungry hearts, When the Saints is the story of a family of outsiders whose redemption might be found in what they longed to escape: each other. When the Saints is a wise, funny, sad, flinty, thoughtful, and self-assured debut about the hardscrabble world of a family of misfits that will appeal to fans of Miriam Toews’ A Complicated Kindness and Heather O’Neill’s Lullabies for Little Criminals. SARAH MIAN’s fiction and poetry have been published in journals such as The New Quarterly, SubTerrain, The Antigonish Review, Galleon Literary Journal, Filling Station, The Vagrant Revue of New Fiction, and Flare. FICTION

Beth Powning A MEASURE OF LIGHT ______________________________________________________________________________ Gripping historical fiction about Mary Dyer, one of America’s first Quakers and among the last to face the gallows in 1600s New England. A Measure of Light centres on the story of Mary Dyer, a Puritan who fled persecution in Elizabethan England only to find the Puritan establishment in Massachusetts every bit as vicious as the one she’d left behind. Whereas the trial of Anne Hutchinson is well-known, Mary Dyer, who is Anne’s side-kick in history, is mentioned in most historical accounts merely as the mother of a grotesquely deformed stillborn baby delivered, and hidden, by midwife Hutchinson. Banished from Boston after her ‘monster baby’ was used by the Puritan authorities as evidence of God’s displeasure with Anne and her followers, Mary left Massachusetts with her husband and children and walked through the forest to Roger William’s haven of liberty, Rhode Island. From there, she eventually, and mysteriously, traveled alone to England, where she met George Fox and became a Quaker. When she returned to Rhode Island, she and her fellow Quakers began an assault upon the Massachusetts theocracy, with its fearsome intolerance, knowing full well that the penalty was death. One of America’s first Quakers and among the last to face the gallows for her convictions, Mary Dyer receives here in fiction the full-blooded treatment too-long denied a figure of her stature: a woman caught between faith, family, and the driving sense that she alone can put right a deep and cruel wrong in the world. This is gripping historical fiction about a woman who chafed at the boundaries of her era in support of women’s rights, liberty of conscience, intellectual freedom, and justice. BETH POWNING was born in Putnam, Connecticut, and studied Creative Writing under E. L. Doctorow at Sarah Lawrence College. Her most recent novel, The Sea Captain’s Wife, was hailed by The Globe and Mail as “the work of an extraordinary writer,” by the Edmonton Journal as “a marvelous read,” by the Ottawa Citizen as “not to be missed,” and by Booklist as “an exciting, adventurous story about a woman’s hidden strength.” RIGHTS SOLD: Canada: Knopf (publication Spring 2015) STATUS: Manuscript available AUTHOR’S WEBSITE: www.powning.com/beth FILM RIGHTS: Available AGENT: Jackie Kaiser

Elizabeth Renzetti BASED ON A TRUE STORY ______________________________________________________________________________ “A hell of a lot of fun… Incisive, street-wise, and written with the deft hand of a truly talented scribe… This book also offers insight into addiction, insecurity, the way our upbringings define us, and the nature of true love, how blind it can be – but also how [it can raise] a person out of the depths of failure and despair.” – The Globe and Mail “A wry and daring debut, serving up razor-sharp wit that cuts through the tangled webs (and cobwebs) of human desire, friendship, and motherhood. Fans of Hollywood – old and new – will embrace Elizabeth Renzetti’s troubled heroine.” – Kim Izzo, author of The Jane Austen Marriage Manual A delectable satirical novel about celebrity culture, journalism, truth, lies, and consequences – about the fictions we tell ourselves and the fictions we tell others. Augusta Price (not her real name) is famous in England for playing a slatternly barmaid on a nighttime soap opera and for falling down drunk in public. Now, she has no job, no relationship with her long-lost son, and a sad shortage of tranquilizers – but she has had an improbable hit with her memoir (which is based on a true story, but only very loosely). However, when Frances Bleeker – an insecure and not very successful American tabloid journalist – tells Augusta that a man Augusta once loved has written a book, Augusta becomes terrified that her life story will be revealed as the web of lies it really is. She sets out on a transatlantic journey from London to California to seek revenge on her former lover – a journey that will require the reluctant help of Frances. ELIZABETH RENZETTI is a columnist for The Globe and Mail and for several years worked in their London bureau. She has been the editor of the Books and Arts sections of The Globe and Mail and editor of Elm Street magazine. Ronald Wright THE GOLD EATERS ______________________________________________________________________________ A tale of adventure and drama set during one of history’s great turning points – the Spanish conquest of the Incas in the 1500s, and the resulting transfer of wealth and power that bankrolled the rise of the modern world. It is 1526. A young Peruvian seaman is seized from an Inca trading vessel in the Pacific Ocean by a ship belonging to Francisco Pizarro, who is seeking the ‘golden land’ of Peru – still only a tantalizing rumour to the Spaniards. Baptised Felipe, the young captive is taught to be an interpreter and taken to Spain in Pizarro’s bid to win support from the king and queen. Intrigued by the strange world of the Europeans, and resentful of the Inca emperors who control much of South America, Felipe returns to his homeland in 1532 with Pizarro’s army of conquistadors. There he plays the key role of go-between in the overthrow of Atahuallpa, the new Inca emperor who has just seized power in a bloody dynastic war set off by a plague of smallpox. At first the interpreter collaborates with the invaders in one of history’s great cultural collisions. But as both Spaniards and Incas begin to fight not only one another but also among themselves, Felipe becomes increasingly troubled by the destruction and exploitation he sees all around: abandoned fields, broken roads, murder, rape, and slavery. When Felipe learns that his cousin Tika (for whom he has yearned since adolescence) is still alive, and that his widowed mother has taken up with a Spanish deserter and fled to the highlands, he defects from his European masters and begins a long search for what is left of his family – and of his own identity. These quests take him into the high Andes, where a kingdom of unconquered Incas is still resisting the invasion. Based closely on real events, The Gold Eaters draws on Ronald Wright’s expert knowledge of time and place as well as his considerable imaginative and narrative gifts to bring to vivid life an unforgettable epoch – one that literally changed the world. RONALD WRIGHT is the award-winning author of 9 books of nonfiction and fiction published in 16 languages and more than 40 countries. Jane Dawson THIRST A LIFE HISTORY OF DESIRE

______________________________________________________________________________ One woman’s restless search for love, meaningful work, and the spiritual life. Fresh, articulate, immersive, and relatable, Thirst: A Life History of Desire is a book for anyone who has ever craved meaningful work, grappled with an illicit attraction, felt a sense of the sacred, feared that sex ended in later life, or longed for a more expressive life. With the appeal of Elizabeth Gilbert’s Eat Pray Love and the discernment of Barbara Ehrenreich’s Living with a Wild God, Jane Dawson invites readers to accompany her on the unexpected odyssey that begins when she leaves a tenured academic position to study, even as an atheist, the ancient practice of spiritual direction. Along the way, she finds herself ambushed by an intense infatuation that challenges everything she thought she knew about desire. In search of understanding, she looks back on her early formation in the suppression of desire (an eating disorder, a dismal sexual history, TV crushes), and reveals how, despite her best efforts to control it, desire repeatedly came rising up to surprise her, in both crushing and uplifting ways. As her journey leads her past some wild disruptions to greater freedom and fulfillment, she overturns standard expectations about success, faith, relationships, and aging, and draws readers into reflection about their own deepest desires and aspirations. Thirst is a beautifully written, candid, and wise debut. JANE DAWSON was awarded a 2012 Coolidge Fellowship at Union Theological Seminary in Manhattan, and the seeds of this book were sown there. The following year, she worked with spiritual memoirist Lauren Winner (Girl Meets God and Still) at the Collegeville Institute Writing Workshop in Minnesota. A former professor in the field of adult education with a special interest in lifelong learning, she now gives seminars and workshops on mysticism and desire. Beth Hitchcock DECOR & AFTER HOW I FIXED UP A HOUSE AND FOUND A HOME (And What I Learned about Life and Love in the Process)

______________________________________________________________________________ Wild meets Happier at Home and Elements of Style in this room-by-room memoir of one woman’s quest to turn a house into a home – and find herself in the process. Six months before she turned 40, Beth Hitchcock, a single magazine editor with a penchant for decorating, finally settled down with her ‘real-estate soulmate,’ a charming circa 1890s house with dormer windows and original, boot-high baseboards. Having moved countless times in her life, this was finally it: no more hanging onto boxes and packing tape; no more waiting for a man to show up or her ‘real’ life to begin. Then, one week before her milestone birthday, Beth lost her mother, the only family she had. While other women might cope by baking up a storm, decamping to a spa, or hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, Beth dealt with her unfolding existential crisis by jumping sledgehammer-first into a bathroom renovation. That’s when she had an epiphany: this was no fluke, it was a lifelong pattern. Decor & After is a story of a dual transformation. Organized as a room-by-room tour of Beth’s house, the book blends stories of love and loss, relationships and belonging, family and self with tragicomic anecdotes from a lifetime of decorating experiments both failed and triumphant. Written with warmth, honesty, and wry, self-deprecating humour, the book is infused with memories of homes and apartments past and sprinkled with the best practical decorating tips and tricks the author has learned along the way. Beth believes that ‘I’m home’ is one of the most powerful things we can say, and that as we remodel our homes, we transform ourselves too. Decor & After is a book for anyone who has sought solace and self-expression through decorating. BETH HITCHCOCK is an award-winning magazine writer and editor (House & Home, Chatelaine) whose house has been featured in magazines, on television, and in top blogs such as Apartment Therapy, Habitually Chic, and Elements of Style. Jay Ingram THE END OF MEMORY A NATURAL HISTORY OF ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE

______________________________________________________________________________ A noted science writer’s illuminating biography of ‘the Plague of the 21st Century.’ For centuries, those afflicted by Alzheimer’s disease have been robbed of their memory, their ability to think clearly, and ultimately their lives. It was in 1901 that German psychologist and neurologist Alois Alzheimer began working with Auguste Deter, a 51-year-old woman suffering from dementia. When several years later upon her death he examined her brain under the microscope, he remarked on two unusual features: dark blobs he called ‘plaques’ and the twisted remnants of neurons, or ‘tangles.’ In the century since the disease was first described, there has been a great deal of scientific inquiry into its causes, but little progress in its treatment. Ingram believes we are on the threshold of important new leaps in understanding, and in The End of Memory, he explains the fascinating science of plaques and tangles, recounts the imperfect history of our efforts to understand and combat the disease and introduces us to the passionate researchers who are now working to find a cure. In the spirit of Siddhartha Mukherjee’s The Emperor of All Maladies, this is a book for those who want to find out the true story behind an affliction that courses through families and wreaks havoc with the lives of millions. JAY INGRAM was the host of Discovery Channel Canada’s Daily Planet from the first episode until June 2011. Prior to joining Discovery, Ingram hosted CBC Radio’s national science show, Quirks & Quarks. James McWilliams THE MODERN SAVAGE OUR UNTHINKING DECISION TO EAT ANIMALS

______________________________________________________________________________ “Among today’s writers on the topic of sustainable food, James McWilliams stands out.” – The Atlantic “McWilliams presents some appealing alternatives to the views of both the agrarian romantics on the left and the agribusiness capitalists on the right.” – Kirkus on Just Food Just Food author James McWilliams’ exploration of the ‘compassionate carnivore’ movement and the paradox of humanity’s relationship with animals. In the last four decades, food reformers have revealed the ecological and ethical problems of eating animals raised in industrial settings, turning what was once the boutique concern of radical eco-freaks into a mainstream movement. Although animal products are often labeled ‘cage free,’ ‘free range,’ and ‘humanely raised,’ can we trust these goods to be safe, sound, or ethical? In The Modern Savage, renowned writer, historian, and animal advocate James McWilliams pushes back against the questionable moral standards of a largely omnivorous world and explores the ‘alternative to the alternative’ – not eating domesticated animals at all. In poignant, powerful, and persuasive prose, McWilliams reveals the scope of the cruelty that takes place even on the smallest and – supposedly – most humane animal farms. In a world increasingly aware of animals’ intelligence and the range of their emotions, McWilliams advocates for the only truly moral, sustainable choice – a diet without meat, dairy, or other animal products. In the spirit of Fast Food Nation and The Omnivore’s Dilemma, McWilliams’ The Modern Savage is a riveting expose of an industry that has typically hidden behind a veil of morality, and a compelling account of how to live a more economical, environmental, and ethical life. JAMES McWILLIAMS is a writer and historian living in Austin, Texas. He is the author of 5 previous books on food, animals, and agriculture, including Just Food and A Revolution in Eating. James Raffan CIRCLING THE MIDNIGHT SUN CULTURE AND CHANGE IN THE INVISIBLE ARCTIC

______________________________________________________________________________ “Travel writing at its best. Epic in scope and geography, it certainly does circle the most brutal and yet fragile landscape on earth. A fantastic writer… He has that rare and great ability to see the big picture while refusing to judge. A must read for anyone concerned about the future of our planet.” – Joseph Boyden, author of The Orenda For James Raffan, more than 35 years of expeditions in the North led to the journey of a lifetime: circumnavigating the globe at 66.6ºN, the Arctic Circle. Travelling by canoe, kayak, reindeer sled, dog team, snowmobile, icebreaker, and on foot, over the course of 3 years, Raffan moved toward the rising sun. He started in Iceland, then went through Scandinavia, Russia’s vast 160 degrees of longitude, across Alaska and Arctic Canada, and around Greenland before crossing the Denmark Strait (amongst blue whales) and finishing back in Iceland. Armed with a keen mind, an anthropologist’s eye, and an unquenchable sense of adventure, Raffan set out to put a human face on the north and give inaccessible regions a voice. What he discovered was shocking, frustrating, and enlightening – that the loss of culture, driven by the same appetites that are causing climate change, is far more threatening than the short term consequences of global warming. Through the framework of the journey, Raffan shares compelling and surprising stories and an inspiring way of thinking about people and place. He meets kids, adults, elders, and engaged northern teens of more than a dozen different Arctic ethnicities – Chiefs, Presidents, and everyday folk – Sami in Scandinavia, Shamen from Siberia, Santa in many haunts, and residents of the Russian Far East and Shismaref, Alaska, whose communities are in danger of disappearing into the sea. He attends two weddings and a funeral, explores the magic of ravens, and sees how the last of the nomadic reindeer herders in Siberia have selectively taken up technology to help them maintain their traditional ways. And at every stop through 24 time zones, Raffan finds beauty, dignity, and hope, even as northern peoples bury their youth as well as their elders, losing both the promise of the future and the deep knowledge of land and language. In the tradition of Barry Lopez, Bruce Chatwin and Farley Mowat, Circling the Midnight Sun is a deeply affecting book that transforms the way we think about northerners and the North. JAMES RAFFAN is an authority on the North whose work has appeared in National Geographic, Canadian Geographic, The Globe and Mail, Explore, and Up Here. The most recent of his dozen books is the bestseller Emperor of the North, which was a finalist for the J.W. Dafoe Book Prize. Vera Tarman with Philip Werdell FOOD JUNKIES THE TRUTH ABOUT FOOD ADDICTION

______________________________________________________________________________ A provocative, timely book that argues that the only hope for our obesity epidemic is to treat our obsession with food as an addiction – and abstain from certain foods. Vera Tarman has spent decades proving that junk food is a drug just as powerful as cocaine. In clinical practice, she teaches that overeating is no different than alcoholism or compulsive gambling, and she and Phil Werdell have helped thousands of people lose weight and stay healthy. Food Junkies tackles the complex, poorly understood issue of food addiction from the perspectives of a medical researcher and dozens of sufferers – and survivors. The book includes a food addiction questionnaire, which allows readers to self-diagnose whether their sugar cravings are an indulgence or a sign of a more dangerous habit. For people struggling with food addictions, recognizing their condition – to say nothing of gaining support and advice – remains a frustrating battle. In Food Junkies, cutting edge research makes the compelling case to treat overeating like any other addiction. The connection is made between food and comfort, with an explanation for why most diets fail and relapse is endemic. By prescribing a treatment focusing on abstinence (the ‘missing piece of the puzzle’ for stopping destructive eating patterns) the authors have created a plan to beat food addiction once and for all. For Vera and Phil are not only experts in their field; they’re also recovering food addicts. Food Junkies is the first book about food addiction written from both a clinical and a personal perspective. Sharing stories of successes and failures from their own lives and the lives of their patients, the authors empower readers with a way to end unhealthy eating habits, lose weight, and finally be free of an obsession with food. VERA TARMAN, MD, MSc, CASAM has practiced addiction medicine for over 20 years and supervised over 6,000 patients. She is the Medical Director of Renascent, a residential treatment centre for substance abuse in Toronto, and works with The Salvation Army Recovery House. Ann Walmsley THE PRISON BOOK CLUB ______________________________________________________________________________ An attack in London left Ann Walmsley unable to walk alone down the street and shook her belief in the fundamental goodness of people. In Canada a few years later, when her friend Carol asked her to participate in a bold new venture in a men’s medium security prison, Ann had to weigh her curiosity and desire to be of service with her anxiety and fear. But she signed on, and for 18 months went to a remote building at Collins Bay, meeting a group of heavily tattooed book club members without the presence of guards or security cameras. There was no wine and cheese, plush furnishings, or superficial chat about jobs or recent vacations. But a book club on the inside proved to be a place to share ideas, learn about each other, and regain humanity. For the men, the books were rare prized possessions, and the meetings were an oasis of safety and a respite from isolation in an otherwise hostile environment. Having been judged themselves, they were quick to make judgments about the books they read. As they discussed the obstacles the characters faced, they revealed glimpses of their own struggles that were devastating and comic. From The Grapes of Wrath to The Cellist of Sarajevo, and Outliers to Infidel, the book discussions became a springboard for frank conversations about loss, anger, redemption, heroism, and loneliness. The Prison Book Club follows 6 particularly involved book club members, who kept journals at Ann’s request and participated in candid one-on-one conversations. Graham the biker, Frank the gunman, Ben and Dread the Jamaicans, and the robber duo Gaston and Peter come to life as Ann reconciles her knowledge of their crimes with the individuals themselves, and follows their lives as they leave prison. And woven throughout is the determined and compassionate Carol Finlay, working tirelessly to expand her program across Canada and into the United States. The books changed the men and the men changed Ann, allowing her to move beyond her position as a victim. She came to realize that given the choice, she’d forsake the company of her privileged friends and their comfortable book club and make the 2-hour drive to Collins Bay. ANN WALMSLEY is a magazine journalist whose work has appeared in The Globe and Mail and Maclean’s. She is the recipient of four National Magazine Awards, a Canadian Business Journalism Award and two International Regional Magazine Awards. She founded her first book club at age nine. John Zada IN THE SHADOW OF GIANTS ______________________________________________________________________________ A work of narrative non-fiction that braids threads of travel and adventure with Sasquatch lore. In The Shadow of Giants recounts a journey through one of the most primordial wilderness regions on Earth – the Great Bear Rainforest – in search of an explanation to a mystery that has long fascinated millions. Travelling by floatplane, motorboat, ferry, and sailboat from one isolated community to the next, John collects stories from locals about their encounters with the elusive Sasquatch – a legendary species of ape-like creatures which mainstream science says does not exist, but which the communities he visits insist is a reality. Unimpressed by the arguments of both skeptics and believers, he works over the course of his travels to piece together his own explanation of this phenomenon, which has mystified him since childhood. As he travels the Great Bear Rainforest, the author is inundated with eerie and fantastical tales, told by people from all walks of life, about their encounters with the reputed, giant humanoids. But he soon finds that he is also hearing about everything else going on in these towns – obscure and otherwise secretive communities whose sometimes dark and sad histories are concealed by their literal and figurative distance from civilization. Not all Sasquatch encounters are explainable – or easily dismissed. And as such, the creature may, or may not, physically exist. What he finds matters more than that existence is the symbolism and meaning that the Sasquatch embodies. What the creature can tell us about nature, and about ourselves. Zada has had a longstanding interest in the Bigfoot/Sasquatch phenomenon, reaching back to his childhood. In that time he’s read most works dealing with the topic and has tracked all major developments in this phenomenon. JOHN ZADA is a Toronto-based writer and photographer. His interest in remote regions and cultures, adventure travel, and the Middle East have taken him to some of the more far-flung parts of the world. His more recent exploits include bushwhacking through the Great Bear Rainforest, exploring the treacherous glaciers of Yukon’s Saint Elias Mountains, travelling with a Bedouin into Jordan’s little known Eastern Desert, and covering refugee issues along the Syrian borders with Turkey and Lebanon. He has written and photographed for such publications as the Toronto Star, The Globe & Mail, CBC.ca, Outpost, Explore, Los Angeles Review of Books, alJazeera English, Canadian Business, Canvas, and The National. Zada is a member of the Society of American Travel Writers (SATW) and is a senior writer at CBC News Network. He holds a Master’s degree in international politics from The American University in Cairo. STATUS: Proposal available AUTHOR’S WEBSITE: www.johnzada.com FILM RIGHTS: Available AGENT: Carolyn Forde
