New Trainer Development Pathway

First  Aid  Training  Cooperative,  Registered  in  Scotland  No:  SC  503998

Business Opportunity – Become a First Aid Trainer With the First Aid Training Co-operative In 2015 the ‘First Aid Training Co-operative’ began developing new first aid trainers to join the Co-operative as Associate Members. Our business has grown steadily over the last four years. We are looking to develop new trainers to: 1. Run courses for our current clients (day rate £180) 2. Help the Co-operative to grow by bringing new clients to the organisation. As an Associate Member, you will also benefit from being paid a commission from the course fees, for every course they book. Trainee trainers will be expected to develop from trainees to Associate Members within one calendar year and abide by the Cooperative’s Members Agreement. We plan to bring on board two cohorts of trainee trainers each year – one starting in February and one in September. What is required to become a first aid trainer? The Health and Safety Executive and Awarding Bodies in the UK dictate the requirements of a first aid trainer. All trainers must: •

Hold a current First Aid at Work (3 days / 18 hours) certificate.

Hold at least a basic training/teaching qualification such as a PGSE, Level 4 PTTLS Award OR by the new Education and Training (EAT) Award.

Hold an accredited Assessor Award. For many trainers this is part of their training qualification (Level 4 PTTLS or EAT Award).

Please talk to us if you currently hold any of these, or other qualifications to check their validity. For those that don’t hold these qualifications, the Cooperative will run a First Aid at Work course and Trainers course alongside their Induction Day.

New Trainer Development Pathway 1. Attend one of our Outdoor First Aid (OFA) courses and Pass This will give you an idea of what we do on courses and level to which we expect our trainers to deliver at. This will be relevant even to those without an outdoors background as it will introduce you to the model that we use, which can then be tailored to your specialist sector if required. 2. Observe an OFA and develop a Scheme of Work / Lesson Plans This is an important part of becoming competent at delivering the course. We will support you in developing this. 3. Team-teach on live courses to build skills Work with experienced trainers and gradually increase in the amount you are delivering. This gives plenty of opportunities for feedback, reflection, and learning from a range of trainers with unique delivery styles. 4. Attend a FATCO Induction Day This will introduce you to the organisational systems that run the company (website, bookings, invoicing, course administration and certification). This will also include information about the first aid training sector, how to find new clients and our marketing messages. It will also be used develop ideas around the assessment practice on first aid training courses. 5. Become ‘signed off’ to run OFA or other courses. To do this you need to be observed running a course or major sections of course and meet the required training and assessment standards. In our experience most new trainers team-teach on around 6 courses before they feel comfortable about being signed off to run their own courses.

Your Investment There is no cost to you for Steps 1-5. Tom and Cory will invest their time to help you to become a professional and skilful first aid trainer. This is a significant investment of their time. Your commitment is travel to get to courses, which could be spread around the country, possibly overnight accommodation for 2 day courses, and your time. The offer to train you to become a trainer for free is time limited. Those who sign up to the trainee trainer programme will have 6 months in order to complete this process from the start of their development pathway. Once a first aid trainer becomes signed off, there is an expectation that trainers would work only with the Co-operative to run first aid courses in accordance with the Co-operative Associate Members Agreement. To progress to delivering any other courses (First Aid at Work, Sports First Aid, Paediatric First Aid, etc) the development process (Steps 1,2,4) will be followed again. This is likely to be a shorter process than the first time however, as you will be familiar with the model and we will support you in tailoring it to a specific sector. Your Costs The main costs are time and travel to attend courses as detailed above. However there may be some start-up costs for new trainees. If you don’t already hold the qualifications required to be a trainer / assessor, then these need to be completed. We will run these at cost for our biannual cohort of trainees: •

EAT Award (5 days plus assignments) approx. £560+VAT=£672. This five day course will include an Award in education and Training which cover the requirements for a trainer sand assessors qualification. Plus a First Aid at Work Certificate. First Aid at Work (FAW) course (3 days) – Can be obtained separately with any approved provider, for those who already hold a trainers qualification. However we will include FAW qualification within an EAT Award course, specifically tailored to new trainers.

To become a trainer there are some items of equipment that you will need to purchase. Below is a standard list of equipment required to run a first aid course. Item

Approximate Cost £900 £200 £12 £50 £20 £30 £100 £500 £350 £2162

6 adult CPR manikins 1 AED Trainer 6 kneeling mats 12 exercise mats & blankets 12 bandage sets Pens, labels, clipboard, etc Flipchart stand and paper Laptop, or Tablet Multimedia projector or TV Total

The Co-operative will work with trainees to bulk buy equipment to keep costs down. You may already have some of the above I.E. a laptop which will keep the cost down. These costs can all be claimed back as expenses in your tax return at the end of your first year of trading. These costs also need to be balanced against a daily teaching rate of £180 per day plus travel and allowances. So after 12 teaching days (~ 6 courses) you will have paid off the initial investment listed above. Geographical Regions Our current Scottish client base is focused around Glasgow, Edinburgh, Perth, Aberdeen and Aviemore, plus the Borders and Central Belt. Think about whether travelling to these areas for work is realistic for you, particularly during the training phase and initial period of being a trainer. Beyond that you will start to develop clients in your geographical patch and we certainly encourage growth into new areas of the country, or other countries! Your Clients

What does FATCo do to support new Providers? The aim of the Co-operative is to grow the co-operative for the benefit of everyone involved. Each associate member trainer will effectively have their own business to grow as much as they like. This centrally administered model means that ‘trainers’ can find clients, run courses, and make money (doing what we’re good at), while the majority of the operational administration is done centrally, so you don’t have to be hassled with the paperwork, accreditation and certification side of things. Each member trainer will also benefit from a the Co-operative current client database that acts as a pool of work for all trainers to generate income from the organisation, effectively meaning that as a start-up business, you can start earning immediately.
