WELCOME from the new student and family programs staff

Welcome to Virginia Tech! We are excited to welcome you, our newest group of Hokies and Hokie families, to your orientation session. Over the next two days you will become acquainted with your new community here in Blacksburg and meet other new and current students. You’ll learn about how to register for classes, what resources are on campus to support you, what it’s like to sleep in a residence hall, where to eat, and start to learn how to become a member of this community of Hokies. All of this is designed to help you with your transition from high school to Virginia Tech. While you are here at orientation, you will be assigned to an orientation leader. These students are an excellent resource for you, so feel free to ask them any questions you have about being a student at Virginia Tech. They are proud of Virginia Tech and will begin to show you what it means to be a Hokie. During orientation, there is a session called Families as Partners dedicated to helping Hokie families in their role as they support their students through this transition. This session will highlight information on health and safety, where students will live and eat, and academics at Virginia Tech. See the following pages for the specific time and location. If you have questions while you are here, please feel free to stop by the New Student and Family Programs information table on the second floor of the Squires Student Center—we have a large HokieBird out front to help you find us. Our orientation mission is to give students and families a positive experience and enough information to feel confident and comfortable about beginning classes at Virginia Tech in the fall. Be sure to not leave orientation with unanswered questions—let us know how we can help you feel confident and comfortable about returning to campus in August. Welcome to Virginia Tech!

Orientation Parking Information The orientation parking permit allows you to park in the Lane Stadium parking lot, located at the corner of Southgate Drive and Spring Road. The Lane Stadium parking lot is the only designated parking lot for both days of your orientation session. You may be ticketed if you park in non-designated areas, including other parking lots, 24-hour restricted lots, carpool spaces, service areas, and unpaid parking meters.

Orientation shuttle service will run 8:00 – 11:00 a.m. and 4:30 – 6:30 p.m.

After 5:00 p.m. on Day One, you may move your vehicle to any non-24-hour restricted faculty/staff (F/S) space or regular commuter/graduate (C/G) space on campus. If you move your vehicle to one of these spaces, you must return the vehicle to the Lane Stadium parking lot by 7:00 a.m. on Day Two.

Services and Support for Veterans and Military Students

Day One, 3:45 – 4:30 p.m.,  Haymarket Theatre, second floor of Squires Student Center The Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets combines leadership training and experience with a focus on academic success. The commandant will give a welcome presentation for cadets and their families. All prospective new cadets and their families should attend this information session.

Day One, 3:45 – 4:30 p.m., 238 Squires Student Center Representatives from Veterans Services and the Student Success Center will provide information regarding procedural requirements and other processes relevant to using Veterans Education benefits while at Virginia Tech. This session will specifically address issues related to Post 9/11 Chapter 33 for veterans/dependents, Chapter 35 for dependents of veterans, Chapter 30 for veterans/active duty, and Chapters 1606 and 1607 for reservists and Virginia National Guard. In addition, an overview of the academic, transition, and community support services available for veterans and military students will be presented.

Career Services Day One, 3:45 – 4:30 p.m., 341 Squires Student Center “Your career: it’s not just about the job… it’s about the journey” Learn how Career Services may assist you in your career journey and complement academic experience through career exploration and careerrelated experiences.

Services for Students with Disabilities Day One, 3:45 – 4:30 p.m., Cardinal Room, first floor of Squires Student Center Staff from Services for Students with Disabilities will explain the requirements and procedures for students requesting accommodations for documented disabilities (including learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder, psychological disabilities, mobility impairments, medical disabilities, visual impairments, hearing impairments, Asperger’s disorder, etc.).

Corps of Cadets Coffee Day One, 8:15 – 9:00 a.m., 219 Squires Student Center Cadets and their families are encouraged to stop by any time between 8:15 and 9:00 a.m. for a quick coffee, conversation, and Q&A. The corps recruiting staff and members of the ROTC units will be available. 

University Honors Day One, 9:30 – 10:15 a.m., 341 Squires Student Center  Families of honors students will meet with the director to learn about the University Honors program.

Health Professions Advising Day Two, 1:00 – 2:00 p.m., 208 Smith Career Center Health Professions Advising at Virginia Tech assists in preparing students who are interested in pursuing a career in medicine, dentistry, physician assistance, pharmacy, nursing, or other graduate health professions. Students should know that interest in a health profession is a pre-professional intention and not an academic major. Although the majority of students interested in a health profession major in life sciences, it is not required. It is never too early to start preparing for a career in the health professions!

Day One, 9:30 – 10:15 a.m., 300 Squires Student Center This session is for students only. The honors staff will meet with students to discuss the overarching philosophy and expectations of what it means to be in honors. This is a required session for University Honors students. Day Two, 11:00, Noon, or 1:00 p.m., Living room, first floor of Hillcrest Hall Students may select one session that best fits their schedule. In this session, students will learn how to work successfully with faculty, gain a better sense of on-campus academic opportunities, and learn how to complete a course of study planner. Students planning to attend the Health Professions Advising session should plan on attending either the 11:00 a.m. or noon honors session. This is a required session for University Honors students.

NROTC (required session for all students signed up to participate in NROTC) Day One, 9:00 – 10:00 a.m., 342 Squires Student Center The Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) is designed to educate and train qualified young men and women for service as commissioned officers in the Navy or Marine Corps. This session is for students and families and will cover the goals of the NROTC, required classes, and expectations for the future midshipman.

Virginia Tech Police Day One, 3:45 – 4:30 p.m., Colonial Hall, second floor of Squires Student Center The Virginia Tech Police Department will discuss services and programs, along with the perceptions of crime and how not to become a victim of it. Topics will include everything from alcohol and drugs to theft protection and self-defense.

Pre-Education Advising Program (PEAP) Day One, 3:45 – 4:30 p.m., 217 Squires Student Center This session will be an introduction to the Pre-Education Advising Program and the various supports for undergraduates working toward fulfilling the requirements for Virginia Tech School of Education admission and Virginia Department of Education licensure for teachers and school counselors. Specific information about these requirements will also be included.

What? Hokie Camp is a three-day, two-night experience that will take place at the W.E. Skelton 4-H Educational Conference Center. Students will ride buses from the Virginia Tech campus to the Conference Center where they will stay in air-conditioned, furnished cabins. Hokie Camp welcomes new Hokies to Virginia Tech with the purpose of giving you the opportunity to make friends and have fun all while learning about Virginia Tech’s spirit, tradition, and values. Through Hokie Camp, you will begin to find your place in the Hokie Family before classes even begin!

Hokie Hi is a great tradition at Virginia Tech—it’s your time to get acquainted with your new home, to make new friends as you meet other new Hokies, and to explore all the exciting ways to learn, in and outside of class. Hokie Hi offers events as soon as you get to campus that will open you up to life as a Hokie right from the word “go!” Be sure to check out classic events like the Hokie Hi Welcome Picnic and the movie on the Drillfield during Move-In and opening weekend. Hokie Hi events will be listed in a calendar online at www.nsfp.vt.edu/hokie_hi. Events are added all the time­—be sure to check the site often.

Who? All incoming first-year and transfer students are invited to attend Hokie Camp.

New students can also look forward to Gobblerfest, Virginia Tech’s annual festival that connects students with what’s going on around campus and in the community. This is the place to go to find out about all of the different student organizations you can join, learn about the university, and have a really good time. Check out the hundreds of student organizations and local businesses that will be on-hand to provide you with opportunities to become engaged with the community at www.dsa.vt.edu/gobblerfest.

Where?

The first few weeks of the fall semester are a whirlwind of events that bring essential campus resources and fun social activities to the residence hall communities, providing skills and information you can use to succeed during your college career and beyond.

The W.E. Skelton 4-H Educational Conference Center at Smith Mountain Lake is located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains near Roanoke, Virginia, and nestled neatly along the shores of a beautiful lake. At Hokie Camp, students will stay in air-conditioned housing in one of six centrally located lodges. Each room sleeps four to six and has community restrooms.

Why? As a new Hokie, you may at some point ask, “What is a Hokie?” During Hokie Camp, you will be exposed to Virginia Tech’s history, spirit, tradition, and values, helping you to find that the answer to your question is “I AM!”

Cost? Hokie Camp costs $240. This cost covers transportation to and from Virginia Tech to W.E. Skelton 4-H Educational Conference Center, lodging, meals, and a Hokie Camp T-shirt and water bottle.

Bring? No need to pack much! Bring comfortable clothes for being outdoors, personal hygiene products, and a towel for swimming. Make sure you bring comfortable, closed-toed shoes. For more information on Hokie Camp go to www.nsfp.vt.edu/hokiecamp or check out the Facebook fan page.
