New Season New Pirates Much thigh-slapping and ooo-arrghhs are to be had on a night out at the Pirates. This is not your “sit-downnicely-children” kind of show. No, this is a shout as loud as you can, sword-fight your way through dinner and get as piratey-as-you-like kind of show. As you arrive and sit down to eat, the pirates wander about the crowd getting to know the kids, chatting to the parents, each area is given a captain and it is their pre-show job to get their court as loud and as supportive as possible. During the show there is a fight between captains, which is where your warm-up, getting to know you session comes in handy.

it arrives the show will have you entranced in neverending Woooahs and Wows. An eyeful of acrobatics, trampolining, fire displays, aerial silk acrobatics, mind boggling skipping rope tricks and more will hold your attention. Perhaps most impressive was the man balancing on his friend’s head with one hand. Not only did they get down from their barrel, they also walked through the audience to the stage. Not only did they get onto the stage, they walked up the ladder of the pirate ships mainsail. Even in hindsight, I don’t really believe it. But I saw it and here is the picture to prove it (right).

Your attention turns away from the food the instant the lights dim. As quickly as

Local News from Andrew Ede Alcúdia votes to re-route electricity cable The row in Alcúdia over the laying of underground high-voltage electricity in the port area of Alcúdia, which has led to a suspension of the work, has also brought about a town hall vote in favour of a re-routing of the cable, something that had been demanded by residents. The text of the council’s motion refers, among other things, to advice from the World Health Organization and the European Union on “prudent avoidance” of any health risks that this type of cabling work may create. There are, however, doubts that a re-routing, which would take the cable out of the port and on to the bypass to Alcanada, will occur. Residents who have been protesting against the work are still none the wiser as to why this option was rejected in the first place. It was said to have been “impossible”. But there is a suspicion that by taking the cable through the centre of the port, fibreoptic cables also being laid will have greater value for future commercialisation. The speculation, therefore, is that it is the wishes of fibreoptic operators that have determined the route that has been adopted. Meanwhile, the Sant Martí substation in the Ca na Lloreta industrial estate will now, because of the cabling, become fully operable and able to supply the high voltage power that has, until now, been one of the reasons why the estate has been dormant since its layout was completed eight years ago. The cabling that Red Electrica is laying starts at this substation, and it was confirmed two years ago, when work started on the substation, that the route would go from Sant Martí along the one that is being

worked on, including, therefore, running through the port in the Calle Teodor Canet. It is a route that Alcúdia town hall was well aware of. With electricity supply to Ca na Lloreta now finally guaranteed, the town hall has provisionally “received” the development, meaning that it will take responsibility for services (rubbish, roads etc.) and that it will also begin to grant licences for units to be established. It is said that some plots had been acquired way back in 2007 at a cost of some 600,000, but they have been unusable because of disagreements over the supply of electricity which were only finally resolved in 2011 when Red Electica committed to investing 33 million euros in the high-voltage infrastructure.

Sa Pobla’s new station opens The new railway station in Sa Pobla was officially opened on Monday as part of an inauguration of what is now a complete ring road around the town. The station needed to be moved because the track cut across the ring road. It might have been relocated a few years ago when the extension to Alcúdia appeared to be going to happen, but when that project was scrapped, so was the relocation.

Cifre not standing? At the time of going to press, there was continuing uncertainty over whether Tomeu Cifre will be allowed to stand for re-election as Pollensa’s mayor. The Partido Popular has an ethical code under which mayors (or other councillors) who are “imputado”, i.e. under investigation by a court without being

formally charged, cannot put themselves forward as candidates for election. In Cifre’s case, he hasn’t actually been declared “imputado”, but he does face two separate accusations brought by private individuals, one of them to do with the El Vilar urbanisation. The PP’s code has meant that mayors in the towns of Alaró and Vilafranca have been forced to stand down as candidates, but in both towns this has caused ruptures within the local PP. Support for both mayors is strong, and so new parties have been formed. It is believed that if Cifre is ultimately barred from standing, a similar rupture would not occur in Pollensa as he doesn’t have the same level of personal support as the mayors in Alaró and Vilafranca. The PP’s ethical code has proved to be controversial. Clearly designed with corruption in mind, it does nevertheless remove candidates who might well be cleared. This is precisely what happened with one-time Sa Pobla mayor Jaume Font. He was “imputado” leading up to the elections in 2011, but his case was archived before the elections took place. In the meantime, however, he had been barred from standing and such was the fallout with the PP that he went off and formed his own party, which is now El Pi.

Son Bauló sewage - the arguments continue The bad blood between Muro and Santa Margalida town halls over the planned siting of a new sewage plant in Son Bauló shows no sign of becoming good blood. Muro’s mayor, Marti Fornes, declined an invitation to attend a roundtable to discuss the plant at Son Bauló’s Concord Hotel, saying that there was

no need for political debate as technical reports had resolved the matter - in favour of the building of the new plant. Santa Margalida’s town hall continues to insist that it should not be built and that the existing plant in Albufera be expanded, something which, the technical people say, cannot be done. The plan for Son Bauló (which is of course in Santa Margalida) was first hatched 12 years ago, and it is one to improve the sewage services to both Playa de Muro and Can Picafort. There has to be an improvement, and as far as Madrid and the regional government in the Balearics are concerned, it will be the Son Bauló plant which brings this improvement about, despite ongoing concerns about pollution from the outlet some three kilometres out to sea.

Toxic waste in La Victoria In the mountains above Alcúdia there is hunting of wildlife (goats primarily), and it is what hunters leave behind that has led the environmental group GOB to denounce this “dumping” of waste to the regional environment ministry and Alcúdia town hall. What GOB is referring to are spent cartridges and lead shot which, it says, have high toxicity. Such waste, it adds, violates state laws. The waste should be specially treated.

Legalising rural properties will benefit tourism A significant piece of legislation passed by the current regional government is the Ley de Suelo (Land Act) under which properties in rural areas considered to have been built illegally continued on page 3

ESRA North Awards from Howard Mullen Last week the new ESRA All-Island President, David Whitney and ex-ESRA North Chair Janet de Vries joined members at the Thursday Club. Janet was there to make presentations to Prodis and the Cancer Support Group who each received €1,000— the money was raised during the last year of her Chairmanship. The awards didn’t stop there. Every year, ESRA Districts nominate two members for continued from page 2

can be made legal. Town halls have responsibility for implementing this law by permitting special procedures (such as the payment of a one-off tax) via which these properties can be established as being legal. In Pollensa there are some 500 properties which fall into this category - villas and chalets built on rustic land which, strictly speaking, shouldn’t have been. The town hall intends to legalise them, and mayor Cifre is encouraging their legalisation in order to guarantee their rightful use as tourist holiday rentals. This villa market is absolutely essential to Pollensa’s tourism given the comparatively low number of hotel places in the municipality and the ongoing uncertainties regarding apartment rental. On this latter issue, the regional government will be presenting the final, definitive version of its tourism law in April. It is not expected that it will include any provision for the regulation of apartments of the type that other regions of

Mary Burns and Sylvia Warr received their awards for their continued work at Thursday Club. With three nominations, ESRA North decided to make an extra award to Brenda Spain have adopted.

Grants not paid to Pollensa When Pollensa town hall took the decision in 2011 to go ahead with the restoration of the family home of the poet Miquel Costa i Llobera, i.e. Can Llobera, it did so on the understanding that a grant from the Council of Mallorca would be forthcoming. The town hall switched this promised grant to Can Llobera, which at that time was in a dreadful state, from a project to build a footbridge to the sports centre. Seemingly, this was all agreed but the town hall has yet to receive the money from the Council.

More cruise ships for Alcúdia Alcúdia’s mayor, Coloma Terrasa, and the tourism councillor, Josefina Linares, have once more been in Florida for the Cruise Shipping Miami convention, the world’s most important

Lowndes, for her continued support of ESRA North activities. Indeed, ESRA North’s Thursday Club, is rapidly becoming a centre of activity for English Speaking Residents in the North. gathering for the cruise industry. Alcúdia is set to receive two ships this summer, but one of them will visit three times. As for 2016, in addition to any others, two ships are expected to arrive in October. Fina Linares says that these will assist in a lengthening of the tourist season.

Call for Ternelles expropriation The Supreme Court having confirmed that walkers do have rights of access to the coast along the Camí de Ternelles in Pollensa, there still remain doubts as to just how much access this will entail. The ramblers’ association, Plataforma Procamins Püblics i Oberts, is therefore urging Pollensa town hall to consider expropriating the path, arguing that the possibility to do so was included in an urban plan of the 1990s. Quite what it might now cost is not known.

La Confraria de la Sang of Pollensa La Confraria de la Sang, or the rather sinister sounding Brother of the Blood, is the name of the group that leads the Holy Thursday Procession and the Devallament on Good Friday in Pollensa. They wear long white robes, buttoned at the front, that fall to their feet. At the waist is a green belt tied to one side. The hood is also white. The Brotherhood was formed in 1990 and is involved in promoting participation in the processions, the group also has its own drummers. Not such a new thing, there was a Brotherhood of Souls in Purgatory way back in 1750. It was restored in 1914 and this statue of the Blood of Christ, now heads the procession of Holy Thursday.

THIS FORTNIGHT’S

Fish of Mallorca

1 Traditional Dance in Mallorca

Traditional Mallorcan Embroidery Traditional Mallorcan embroidery is a labour of love. Linen table clothes, napkins, baby bibs and bonnets, are adorned with highly-skilled needlework. The motifs are always floral, with plants or fruit and leaves with wavy stalks and lines. The preferred material is linen, which in the old days was home made too, and the colours were traditionally turquoise blue, honey or copper red. One item can take many hours; the linen is embroidered by hand using a free-stitch technique directly on top of the delicate fabric. In Puerto Pollensa, Casa Maria has been supplying embroidered homeware for many years. The shop is at Carrer Metge Llopis, 8, and inside you will find all manner of gifts or treasures for your home.

As the fiestas are ramping up again, so too are the Mallorcan dancers. Known as the Ball de Bot, traditional Mallorcan dance has a strong matriarchal character as the women take the lead and make their male dance partners follow their steps. Historically, the dances played an important role during the saint’s festivals as well as during harvest celebrations, when wheat, olives and figs were abundant. Ball de Bot is made up of four different styles; the slower Bolero, La Jota which is much faster, as are the Fandango and the La Mateixa i el Copeos styles. They used to be fully improvized, or at least have minimal choreography, but as the Ball de Bot grew as a performance, rather than just for fun, planned choreographed dances were introduced. Today the dance groups maintain this academic style and spectacular choreography although, there is some improvization as dance schools teach different combinations to suit their group’s preferences. In all cases authenticity remains strong. Once at risk of dying out, the dance has been fully revived and these days we see the Ball de Bot across the island, sometimes with tiny children taking part. Some dances are improvized, especially the participatory events where the audience can join in, so you have the opportunity to give it a go too!

Puerto Alcudia’s 10th Annual Nautical and Sepia Gastronomy Fair Last Friday saw the presentation of the 10th Edition of Puerto Alcudia’s Fira de la nàutica i gastronòmica de la sípia – Nautical & Sipia (Cuttlefish) Gastronomic Fair, which will take place on 10,11 and 12 April at the Port of Alcudia. Mayor Coloma Terrace and her colleagues met with participating restaurateurs and businesses, as well as the Port Authority and Alcudiamar representatives to announce the weekend’s performances and present the fair’s poster. This year, the marquee of the Expo has been expanded to accommodate more restaurants—a total of 24. Inside the tent, there will be various activities starting in the evening of 10, 11 and 12 April. The fair will spread along the seafront from the top of the beach down to the plaça de la Quarantena, and market stalls with artisan craft and food stalls will line the promenade. The first line of the promenade exhibition area will be dedicated to marine-based companies. Now well established, the fair serves as an unofficial start to the tourist season, giving the port a wake-up call after the winter closure. Such a bustling atmosphere, with so much activity from dancing and eating and drinking, the Nautical & Sepia Fair is one not to miss.

Sepia (Cuttlefish)

Starting with the Sepia, or cuttlefish (it has its own fair next week, it seems mean not to), this variety of Cephalopoda has a special place on the island’s gastronomy, above all in rice dishes or stews, with plenty of onion. Cuttlefish stews should be cooked slowly to ensure it is tenderized and it can incorporate the flavour of the stew.

2 Red Lobster

Mallorca’s lobsters are considered the best in the Mediterranean, especially those caught from the sea between Mallorca and Menorca. Highly valued, the lobsters are protected and can only be caught between March and August and they have to be longer than 19cm. Lobster Stew is a typical dish, much like the French Bouillabaisse.

3 Lisa or Llissa fish

This delicate fish is eaten during lent. The fish is not farmed so it tastes as it should and it is not as common as its comparable counterparts, the Dorada or Lubina. If you manage to get one, make sure you eat it the same day.

4 Rape (Monkfish)

Not exactly pretty, the monkfish is still quite delicious. Firm and meaty it is cooked in a stew or with onions.

or Dorado, 5 Llampuga the Dolphinfish The rare but well appreciated Dolphinfish appears in Balearic waters at the back end of summer. It can weigh up to 40kg and has a beautiful blue-green colour and a distinctive yellow stripe.

You see, years and years ago, there wasn’t a gym on every street corner and they also didn’t have access to many foods we have now. The women would be in the home, cooking, cleaning and looking after the children, a full-time, active job in itself. The men would be out labouring. The meals would be made from scratch. Fresh vegetables, meat, fish, eggs, homemade bread and hardly anything processed. They were active, but not like we are nowadays running ourselves into the ground, and yes, they ate, but not like we do now. Obesity wasn’t really an issue then. They were sensible and everything was in moderation. 2015 and we are pretty much the complete opposite of our ancestors. No moderation whatsoever! Generally, we are either doing far too much exercise or not enough, eating far too much, or in starvation mode because Grazia said it’s the best way to lose weight! Where did the moderation go? There is no quick and easy way to drop the lbs but the secret is… there is no secret. 85-90% of your daily food intake should consist of whole, nutritious foods such as meat, fish, veggies, fruits, eggs, milk, cheese (yes, cheese), nuts etc. and the other 10-15% can be a little of what you fancy - like a bit of Easter egg. There are no ‘good’ and ‘bad’ foods. Chocolate or bread does not make us fat, eating it in excess does! And so, the key is moderation. Make the most of these beautiful fruit and veg stalls we have access to here in Mallorca. Get to your local butchers and buy some fresh meat. Cook and enjoy with your family. Leave a little room for a glass of red wine or a couple of chunks of chocolate but knowing your limits will leave you with a very balanced and healthy lifestyle. So, can you eat the Easter egg? Maybe not all in one go, but a little piece of chocolate every day will not do you any harm at all. Natalie Epstein is a Personal Trainer and Nutritionist. Not a great performance but at least it ended the losing streak. Call or Whatsapp for information or appointment 675 940 541 • [email protected]

The Mallorquinista Work in Progress After successive defeats at the hands of Alaves and Llagostera it’s time to take stock of the situation at Son Moix under the leadership of head coach Miguel Soler and Director of Football Miguel Nadal, who are both legends on the island from their playing days at Real Mallorca. There was some optimism that the club could make a late charge to the playoff places in the Spanish second division. The players have responded to the change in style that Soler has introduced. His high pressing game plan when not in possession and a pass and movement plan when in possession is certainly more pleasing to the eye than the deep defending and breakaway philosophy of his predecessor, Valery Karpin. The stark reality is that there was just too much leeway to be made up and thoughts are already turning to next season, which is the centenary year of the club. Indeed if Karpin had remained in charge then the club may well have been fighting a battle against relegation to the complete wasteland of regional third division football. Generally, the outlook is much better and the new owner, Utz Claassen, has introduced many fan-friendly features. At the Llagostera home game, free ensaimadas and hot chocolate welcomed the crowd. On the field of play the biggest disappointment in recent weeks has been the alarming dip in form from wonder kid Marco Asensio. The 19-year-old was bought by Real Madrid in

the winter transfer window and immediately loaned back to the islanders. He had been a shining beacon in the first half of the season, frequently Mallorca’s best player in many games. He has an amazing ability to ghost past defenders almost at will and this causes panic in opposing teams. He has also scored some brilliant goals from direct free kicks from outside the area. However his one drawback is a lack of defensive quality and he has not embraced the Soler high pressing plan as well as his lesser-gifted team mates. He is clearly looking forward to joining up with ‘Los Blancos’. He may find it difficult to land a place in the squad, after being a big fish in a small pond at Mallorca. He is likely to be loaned out to another La Liga team to gain experience of top-flight football. It will be interesting to monitor his progress. Football Director Nadal is already drawing up a list of possible transfer targets for next season. Borja Baston from Atletico Madrid is high on that list and a new contract for Pedro Bigas is an essential. Claassen has stated that he would like the club to bring in both English and German players to attract more of Mallorca’s expat residents to the games. He has however reiterated that Nadal is in sole charge of recruitment within the club’s pay structure. This is the correct way to run a football club in todays economic climate and the green shoots of recovery are most certainly blooming in the spring like weather! continued on page 9
