V-ZONs From PTSA The PTSA sale of entertainment coupon books netted a windfall benefit for GCS. Sales were good enough that the PTSA received, as a premium, a dozen V-ZONs which have been donated to the Elementary and Middle & High School media centers. V-ZONs are portable DVD/ CD/MP3 players. Students from grades K-12 sold the entertainment coupon books last fall, with sales nearing 600 copies. “Everybody did a good job,” said Tricia Wheeler, fundraiser chair of the PTSA. Profits from the sales will be used to fund various PTSA programs. Tricia Wheeler with a basket full of V-ZONs, now in the school media centers.

Facilities Task Force Analyzing Building Needs It might surprise you to know that a task force made up of school community members has been working for several months developing a plan for a new building project. With our most recent renovations having just been completed and a roof project scheduled for this summer, some might argue that it is too soon to be planning for another project. However, the work of the present task force is really an extension of the work that was done for Project I. In project I, 9.9 million dollars of improvements were made to our facilities. The emphasis of Project I was to renovate and replace many of the mechanical systems in our building. New science rooms were constructed in the high school along with the new entry way and middle school/high school administrative and counseling offices. However, in preparing for Project I, the original community task force identified almost 30 million dollars worth of projects that were needed to upgrade and improve our school buildings and facilities. In deciding on the scope of work for Project I, the Board of Education recognized that a second phase would be needed to complete much of the identified work. The current task force has looked at possible projects in the following areas: • transportation facilities The first-ever PTSA Science, Math • art and technology classrooms in the middle school/high and Technology Fair, for Grades K-8, school* is set for April 23. • elementary and middle school/high school media centers* The purpose of • classrooms and offices in the district hallway* People intere the fair is to have • athletic fields and facilities sted in volun teering should conta fun and promote • music and auditorium improvements ct Sue Hurd at 346-6222 or shurd@gen an interest in • technology eseo.k12.us. ny. mathematics and • bathroom renovations By the time Linkages has gone to science-related • parking lot improvements press, paren ts should hav e received topics. Four ICE Awards Mathletics Results Senior High

GCS’ Senior High Interscholastic Mathematics team took second place in the region, when the final score was tabulated at the November IMC competition. Currently, Avon Central School now holds first place. The match was held at Geneseo United Methodist Church, where seven area school districts competed for the top spot. Questions were in the categories of geometry of circles, Pythagorean relationships, factoring, systems of equations, and rational expressions. Top scoring students on the GCS Senior High IMC team at the November match were Charles Aten and Kevin Lin. The GCS IMC coach is Frank Szucs. Results of the January IMC competition were unknown at press time.

Junior High

GCS’ Junior High IMC team left the first match of the year with a third place standing. Held in November at York Central School, GCS competed against eight area school districts, answering questions in the areas of general arithmetic, number theory, exponents and fractions, decimals, and order of operations. High scorers for GCS were Angela Halstead and Ben Kelly. John Baer is the Jr. High IMC coach. Results of the December Jr. IMC rematch were unknown at press time.

Back: Joe Macula, Julia Muhlnickel, Angela Foster, Greg Terho, Conner Creagan, and Emma Peace. Four GCS students earned individual achievement awards at the annual Genesee Valley BOCES Interscholastic Competition in English (ICE). Now celebrating its 21st year, the ICE was held last December at SUNY Geneseo. School teams vying for the ICE cup consist of three students each, each competing in separate events in which their efforts are scored. One is the Comprehension and Interpretation of Literature category, another is Dramatic Presentation, and the third is Creative Writing. Each school district fields several teams. The school that earns the highest combined scores claims the ICE Cup, and awards are presented for individual distinction. GCS made a strong showing in the Dramatic Presentation event, in which students performed a monologue on a bare stage. Conner Creagan took second prize for his speech from the play Hold Me! and Emma Peace took sixth prize for her monologue from Voices From The High School. GCS dominated Creative Writing this year, winning two awards, with Cooper Creagan taking fourth and Sarah Risley sixth prize. This competition consisted of two parts. First, students had to write an essay on one of several selected topics. Then they composed a response to the following quote from anthropologist Margaret Mead: “I was brought up to believe that the only thing worth doing was to add to the sum of accurate information in the world.” In addition, Joe Macula was cited with an honorable mention for his high score. In individual team scoring, GCS’ “White” team was awarded third place. On the White team are Angela Foster (literature), Emma Peace (drama), and Cooper Creagan (writing). GCS’ ICE team coaches are Bettina DeBell and Terry VanWuyckhuyse. Dansville Central School was this year’s ICE cup winner.

GCS Takes Silver At Academic Challenge Bowl A close, see-saw final round of questioning brought a conclusion to the 2008 Academic Challenge Bowl Championship, with GCS claiming second place, edged out for the gold this year by Avon Central School. The exciting season closer was held January 8 in York Central School’s auditorium. Academic Challenge Bowl (ACB) is a quiz competition in the tradition of College Bowl. The format is designed to encourage and promote academic excellence. The middle school contestants are asked questions that demand quick recall of facts from all academic disciplines and from current events. Each team consists of eight members, four competing in each half of a match. The match is played head to head with two opposing schools. Questions are answered in four-minute rounds, with each correct answer worth ten points. Students have four seconds in which to give their answer, ten seconds if it is a mathematics question. After this, a bonus round is played, consisting of six questions for each team, worth a 20-point bonus. Questions answered incorrectly are offered to the opposing team. Another four-minute round is then played, followed by a half time break. For the second half, new contestants from each school step in to play. This season’s four top ACB teams from the Genesee Valley Region met at the finals, with Wyoming Central School and York Central School eliminated in the first part of the evening. When it came time for Avon and Geneseo to face off, organizers likened it to a “clash of the titans.” The feverish, intellectual slug match saw the score furiously volley back and forth. It was a race against the clock, with ACS pulling ahead in the final seconds with a score of 270 to GCS’ 240. On Geneseo’s championship ACB team are Bram Adams, Jamie Andrest, Max Callahan, Sam Coniglio, Ethan Fletcher, Angela Halstead, Tom Hartvigsen, Ben Kelly, Melita Kingston, James Lacitignola, Matt McClure, Kelsey Marnon, and Cielo Ornielas-MacFarlane. Their coaches are Sylvia Kelly and Glenda Van Ry. GCS’ good conduct was praised by officials. “The finals competition was a model of team support and grew in sportsmanship as the evening progressed,” said Aimee Erwin, enrichment specialist for the GV BOCES. “All four teams were demonstrably grateful and honored to have reached the final four competition.” Presiding as judging officials at the finals were Barbara Ayers and Kirk Richenberg.

Fall Chess Tournament Results

GCS’ chess team took third place in the Elementary division at the 2007 Genesee Valley BOCES Elementary & Middle School Chess Tournament. The tournament drew the best chess teams in the area, with a total of 85 players in attendance. It was held November 10, at the Mt. Morris May Center. Three GCS contestants won medals at the event. Mateo Jacome won the Advanced Bronze Medal, Joshua Ruskauff won the Beginner Gold Medal, and Brian Linton won the Beginner Silver Medal. Players were divided into sections based on experience and skill level. The top four winners in each section were awarded medals.
