April F R I D A Y, A P R I L 1 4 p.m. ACM Film Festival: Lawrence University will host the first annual ACM Film Festival and Conference for undergraduate students enrolled at any of the Associated Colleges of the Midwest. This is a three-day event, involving several different functions that occur simultaneously throughout the weekend. The festival includes screenings, workshops and master classes, while the conference is comprised of lectures, seminars and discussions. Esch Hurvis Room, WCC 8 p.m. Wildspace Dance Company Performance: Stansbury Theatre 8 p.m. World Music Series/Dance Series–Zafir with Simon Shaheen: Simon Shaheen brings to life the Arab music of Al-Andalus and blends it with the ubiquitous art of flamenco in his newest production Zafir, a program of instrumental and vocal music and dance. This program does not pretend to recreate the music of a bygone era, but rather to renew a relationship that began more than a thousand years ago. Deana Donohoue, assistant professor of chemistry, examines the important trace gases in the atmosphere, their effects on climate, smog and other health issues and how these effects might be changing the planet. Esch Hurvis Studio, WCC 8 p.m. Performing Arts at Lawrence, Artist Series–Jeremy Denk: American pianist Jeremy Denk has steadily built a reputation as an unusual and compelling artist, with a broad and thought-provoking repertoire. He has appeared as soloist with many major orchestras, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra and the symphony orchestras of Boston, Chicago, San Francisco and London. He regularly gives recitals in New York, Washington, Boston, Philadelphia and around the United States. He was the winner of the 2013 MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship, the 2014 Avery Fisher Prize and Musical America’s 2014 Instrumentalist of the Year award. From firmly American roots, Brownlee has become a star on the international scene, performing opposite the leading ladies of contemporary opera, and has been lauded continually for the seemingly effortless beauty of his voice. This performance is part of the Ben Holt Memorial Concert Series. Oneida Street, Appleton, WI 54915 8:15 p.m. Folk opera Odyssey: Joe Goodkin’s Odyssey is a 30-minute original musical composition for solo acoustic guitar and voice. Part lecture, part musical performance and part interactive discussion, the centerpiece of Goodkin’s program is a 30-minute continuous performance of 24 original songs with lyrics inspired by Odysseus’ famous exploits. Since its premiere on April 24, 1976, this hourlong work has enchanted and mesmerized listeners. Its use of subtly shifting sonorities against a background pulse came to define Steve Reich’s sound in the 1970s, and influenced a generation of composers. Come and experience this work live! Stansbury Theatre 8 p.m. Performing Arts at Lawrence, Jazz Series–Kurt Rosenwinkel New Quartet: There are artists who uphold what’s already been defined in music and then there are artists who do the defining. Guitarist, composer and educator Kurt Rosenwinkel undisputedly sits among the trailblazers in the latter group. He favors floating lyricism, a luminous tone and an ultramodern harmonic language, all reasons for his stature as one of the young gurus on his instrument. His New Quartet is first and foremost a showcase for his bond with pianist Aaron Parks, who appears along with bassist Eric Revis and drummer Allan Mednard. Harrison Symposium offers a special opportunity to recognize the outstanding work done by our undergraduates in the humanities and social sciences and to congratulate them on their accomplishments. Each year one student receives the Richard A. Harrison Award.
