Clubhouse News

APRIL 2015

FROM THE MANAGER, PATRICK DILL ! I have to say as I type this it is about 45 degrees outside and raining. We have had some of the craziest weather in recent memory. Now that it is almost April I hope we are about to see some warm, dry weather come our way, so the golf course and tennis courts can start getting a lot of use. Good news! The swimming pool official opens in less than 60 days. So tell the kids its getting close.! ! But, before the pool opens we still have other major events between now and then, including Mother’s Day. Please look at the upcoming newsletter to make sure you don’t miss any of the special events happening at New Bern Golf & Country Club.! ! I would like to thank everyone that came out to watch the ACC tournament and first rounds of the NCAA tournament. We had

great crowds for all games and hopefully all ACC teams will continue to be successful.!

!

REMINDERS:! • When parking, please do not park at the end of parking lot rows, as it makes it difficult for cars that are properly parked to back out of their spot.! • Shirt tails shall be tucked in at all times while playing golf.! • Smokers - please respect the appearance of Club property by disposing of cigarette and cigar butts in an ashtray.! • Walkers – please be aware of golfers at all times on the golf course. Golfers have the right-of-way at all times and getting hit by a golf ball can be extremely dangerous and painful. Walking on the golf course is done at the walker’s risk.

!

Tennis News

TENNIS REPORT, BILL JONES ! Spring time is here and we are so excited with all our USTA teams in full swing as I write this. We have four ladies teams ranging from a beginner team, at the 2.5 level, to the 4.0 singles team. The men have fielded a 3.0 team and we are playing very well. ! ! This is the time of the year where we are able to say good bye to the dreaded winter

APRIL 2015

and look ahead to summer right around the corner. We will be putting the wind screens up now that March has come and gone. The weather in March can be very unpredictable and that is why we wait until April to reinstall them. ! ! We look forward to great weather and tennis in April.

April Court Resurfacing  It is that time of the year when we have the clay courts resurfaced.  It generally takes about one week, depending on the weather. They will have the top coat of “dead” material scraped off and the lines taken up to install new material and new lines.  We will give you notice of when we begin the process. During this process, we ask for your patience, as it can be noisy and dirty.  Once they are complete, it will be like playing on new courts.

USTA Kid Level 4 Tournaments

Every year at NBGCC we have two tournaments for the kids,  one in the Spring (March 21st-22nd ) and one in the Fall (Oct 2nd-3rd). We are so lucky to have these tournaments for the kids to play what they practice.

Join the Tennis Ball Machine Club

!

Work on those forehands, backhands, lobs and drop shots by joining the Ball Machine Club! For $180 a year, you have unlimited use of the ball machine to improve your tennis strokes and ball placement. The rental is billed on your April 30th statement each year for 12 months of use from May 1st - April 30th. Rental is prorated on the month you join. !

Upcoming April Events: The 2nd Annual Julia Hudson Member/Guest Tournament Friday, April 3rd The Al Mack Invitational Member/Guest Tournament Saturday, April 11th

!

We love to offer these events each year to bring family and friends together. We have prizes and gifts for everyone who plays. It is a fun event culminating with a nice lunch over at the grill. If you haven’t attended one in the past, please do so. If you have, we hope you keep coming back, because every time we have lots of laughs, plenty of great tennis and memories that last a life time. We hope you sign up and be a part of the tradition here at NBGCC.

APRIL 2015

Tennis Member of the Month

This is our favorite piece to write at the tennis department. We get to tell everyone our story of who we see loving the game as much as we do. It is wonderful to share this information with those folks who are not able to see what we see.

This person is a trail blazer! A person who stepped out of her comfort zone and has taken on a leadership role here at NBGCC.  It is hard to find someone who will put themselves out there to help others and to serve others with dignity and kindness.  She is a true competitor, who is a leader not only on the court, but off as well.  She has done an amazing job keeping everyone together when they have questions and are those who are new to this arena.

Do you know who this is????  She is Mrs. Sarah Corey.  Sarah is the Captain of our new 2.5 ladies USTA league team.  She has taken on the responsibility of gathering all these new lady tennis players together and organizing the team. The team is doing GREAT and the ladies are all having fun. So the next time you see Sarah, stop her and let her know we are all behind her, cheering her and her team on to be the best they can possibly be!  Way to go Sarah, we are all so very proud of you!!

Junior Tennis Member of the Month

Director’s Tip of the Month

An affable and cheerful junior that he is, Whit Nuckolls shows a great deal of heart and passion for the game of tennis. With an unyielding demeanor, when on court practicing or playing, he puts in his day’s work. He looks at life’s obstacles through a serene sense of humor. And did we say he also has a witty way to tell you his experiences? A conversation with Whit and you’ll laugh so hard you will know he’s a comedian at heart. Congratulation on being Junior of the Month, Whit Nuckolls!

!

Leadership, by definition, means the “activity of leading”.  What does that mean to me? To me, it means we all have a responsibility to lead by example.  On the tennis court, we show our clients and students how to perform a skill by leading them through it.  We also lead by example of who we are every day; how we act and how we help them to become leaders in their own right.  Leadership is a duty that my staff and I take seriously every day.

We come across so many kids and young adults who ask us for our experience and expertise when it comes to tennis.  To me, tennis is just a metaphor for life. We have so many challenges that we face in life, that we can use tennis as an analogy. Tennis, like life, is not for the faint of heart. Through hard work and dedication to one’s craft or family, our youth will be successful if they are willing to put in the time and effort to get there.  School, sports, and life in general are tough for any kid, especially with all the outside influences they face.

With strong leadership, we will all be able to help them to that finish line.
