Neutrinos in Physics, Astrophysics and Cosmology 23-31 May 2006 - Max Planck Institute for Physics - Munich, Germany http://www.mppmu.mpg.de/ISAPP06

Facilities Lecture Hall All lectures will be held in the Auditorium of the Max Planck Institute for Physics. Large blackboard, overhead projector and beamer will be available as well as a wireless network (WLAN). There will be no cable connections for laptops. Some terminals, printers, photocopy machines will be available.

Registration On the evening of monday 22.05, a few members of the LOC will be at Hotel Dachs for pre-registration from 19:00 to 21:00. Upon payment of the registration fee you will be provided with a folder containing a Munich map, touristic info, local transportation tickets, list of participants and the schedule of the school. For late arrivals and/or for local students, registration is also possible on 23.05, during the coffee breaks (10:30-11:00, 16:00-16:30).

Posters During all the school period, there will be panels in the Auditorium for displaying posters. The maximal acceptable posters size is the A0 format (841 x 1189 mm). There will be no facility available for printing posters at the Institute. A twominutes (one overhead slide) introduction to the poster content will be arranged during one of the afternoon discussion sessions. A competition with a prize for the best poster will also be organized. All students will contribute to select the best poster by voting with a ticket included in the registration package.

Discussions At the end of each day of lectures, a discussion session will take place from 16:30 to 18:00. It will be moderated by a chairman, and will allow the students to ask questions about the topics treated in the lectures of that day, or to ask for clarification or further details. These discussions will provide an important feedback to the lecturers to gauge their courses, so an active participation by the students is encouraged.

Free day On sunday 28.05, there will be no lectures. After breakfast at the hotel, you will have a free day to explore Munich and surroundings. A few tips for one-day or half-day excursions are contained in the registration folder, together with touristic information on Munich.

Coffee breaks, lunches, dinners Coffee breaks, lunches and dinners on the lecture days are covered by the registration fee, both for external and local registered students. Coffee breaks will take place at Max Planck Institute for Physics. Lunches will be served starting at 12:30 at the italian restaurant "Racchetta d'oro", a couple of minutes of walking distance from the MPI, close to "Iphitos" tennis club. Dinners will take place starting from 19:30 (18:30 for the welcome reception on the first day) at the following restaurants: 23.05 Welcome Reception

Public Transit in Munich Basic Rules Public transit in Munich is easy and convenient to use. You can freely transfer between urban trains (S-Bahn), subway (U-Bahn), streetcars and buses. On a single-ride ticket you may move in one direction from your starting point towards your destination. You may interrupt within the time limit, but not go backward. There are no physical barriers to enter platforms (as opposed e.g. to Paris), so it is your own responsibility to carry a valid ticket. After purchasing a ticket at a vending machine, you must VALIDATE it by stamping it at one of the obvious blue boxes at the gates to the subway or urban trains or in streetcars or buses. Weekly and monthly tickets (e.g. Isar cards) do not need validation. No such boxes are within urban trains or subways, so stamp the ticket before entering the platform. If plain-clothes controllers catch you without a valid ticket they ask without mercy for a “transportation surcharge” of 40 Euros. For details on the network, fares, etc. see http://www.mvv-muenchen.de/

Urbain trains (S-Bahn)

Subway (U-Bahn)

Which Ticket? The ticket vending machines offer a bewildering variety of tickets with dozens of choices. The price depends on the number of zones you are moving in. The only relevant tickets for you should be the ones for the connection between airport and downtown •

Einzelfahrkarte ab 4 Zonen (8.80 Euros) Single-ride ticket for one person between any two places in the entire transit network, e.g. airport-downtown or the reverse. This is the best solution if you travel alone, and do not want to use again the subway.

Single-Tageskarte Gesamtnetz (9.60 Euros) Any number of rides within the entire network on the day of validation until 6 a.m. the next morning. The “Single” in Single-Tageskarte refers to a single person, not a single ride. So, this is the best solution if you travel alone, and are planning to use the subway-tram-buses again on the day of your arrival at the airport/departure for the airport.

Partner-Tageskarte Gesamtnetz (17.00 Euros) Same as the single counterpart, for a group of up to 5 persons travelling together. This is thus the cheapest choice is you are moving together with at least one friend/colleague, even if you only use the subway once from the airport to downtown. Of course, also one of you alone can use it afterwards in the city...

If instead you are arriving at the main train station (Hauptbahnof), buy a Kurzstrecke (1.10 Euro) if you only want to reach the Hotel Dachs (see above). A Single (4.80 Euros for one traveller) or Partner (8.50 Euros up to 5 people travelling together) Tageskarte Innenraum is instead the best solution for travelling freely one day in the inner Munich area. Moving around the city You will be provided with two weekly tickets to move freely in the inner three rings of the Munich transport system (covering from downtown to the MaxPlanck-Institute and slightly beyond). For trips outside this area, you might consider the following possibilities •

Single (6.50 Euros for one traveller) or Partner (11.50 Euros up to 5 people travelling together) Munich XXL Any number of rides within the green and white zones on the day of validation until 6 a.m. the next morning. This is the ideal choice for example for a trip to Starnberg (on the nice Starnberger Lake, line S6) or to the Memorial site of the Dachau Concentration Camp (S2, Dachau).

Single (9.60 Euros) or Partner (17.00 Euros) Tageskarte Gesamtnetz It covers any number of rides in the whole Munich transport network. For example you can reach the Ammer Lake on the line S5.
