Course Description

NetVault Backup System Administration Complete Instructor-led Training Description: The NetVault Backup System Administration Complete – Instructor-led training course is designed to instruct students on the essentials of deploying, configuring, and operating NetVault Backup version 10.0 in their environment. This course consists of four modules:  Module 1: Introduction to NetVault Backup (Instructor-led Training)  Module 2: Basic Operation of NetVault Backup (Instructor-led Training)  Module 3 & 4: Netvault Backup Advanced Administration (Instructor-led Training) There will be a test built-in at the end of each module. After completing the entire series, you will have received detailed instructions on NetVault Backup implementation and administration skills, basic troubleshooting techniques, and best practices. Further details of each module are below.

Training Delivery Modality: This course includes simulated lab and is offered in the following formats:  Virtual instructor-led training  On-site instructor-led training. This format is only available if done in combination with other on-site Netvault Backup services. The typical classroom day runs from 9AM to noon and 1PM to 4PM (unless otherwise agreed upon).

Intended Audience: NetVault Backup system administrators as well as IT professionals responsible for the administration and optimization of the solution.

Duration: The total duration of this course is 4 days (6 hours a day).

Module 1 – Introduction to Netvault Backup (Instructor-led Training) Description:

Course Description This course is the first module in a four part NetVault Backup 10 administration course series designed to instruct students on the essentials of deploying, configuring, and operating NetVault Backup version 10 in their environment. In this module, you will be introduced to NetVault Backup’s installation and configuration, major components, new web-based user interface and the essential set of tasks needed to get your backup domain operational. Prerequisites:  Working knowledge of system administration in a Windows, Linux/Unix, or Macintosh based operating environment.  Familiarity with basic backup and retrieval concepts and theories.  General knowledge of networking and storage concepts and terminology.  Virtual lab access requires a broadband internet connection. Learning Objectives: In this first module we will cover the following:  The NetVault architecture and typical deployment scenarios.  Installation and initial configuration of the backup server, web services and clients.  Protecting NetVault’s master database and basic startup procedures.  Understanding the new web based user interfaces design and operation.  Using the Configuration Wizard to perform initial setup and job creation.  Real-time monitoring functions provided through the WebUI.  Detailed steps required to add clients, client groups and storage device targets. Topics: Lesson 1 – Introduction and NetVault Backup Overview  Course Introduction, high level overview of major features and deployment scenarios. Lesson 2 – Installation and Upgrades  Installation procedures for the backup server and clients.  Installing NetVault Backup 10 on a Windows Server.  Upgrade Considerations. Lesson 3 – NetVault Database Backup Considerations and Plug-in  Using the database plugin to protect NetVault’s master database repository. Lesson 4 – Getting Started  Controlling the NVBU Service and understanding the Web Server settings.  Login procedures and options. Lesson 5 – Web User Interface Overview  A complete review of the console’s layout and major functions.  Using the Configuration Wizard during initial system setup. Lesson 6 – NetVault Backup Server Monitoring Functions  Detailed review of the real-time monitoring functions available in new WebUI. Lesson 7 – Configuring Clients  Review of procedures related to adding and configuring clients and client groups Lesson 8 – Configuring Storage

Module 2 – Basic Operation of NetVault Backup (Instructor-led Training) Description: This is the second module in a four part NetVault Backup 10 administration series designed to instruct students on the essentials of deploying, configuring, and operating NetVault Backup version 10 in their environment. In this module, we will discuss the features and functions that are most widely used for the daily administration of data protection tasks in a NetVault Backup domain. In addition, best practices for planning a backup and recovery strategy will be presented. After completing the entire series, you will have received detailed instructions on NetVault Backup implementation and administration skills, basic troubleshooting techniques, and best practices. Prerequisites:  Completion of module one; Introduction to NetVault Backup 10.  Working knowledge of system administration in a Windows, Linux/Unix, or Macintosh based operating environment.  Familiarity with basic backup and retrieval concepts and theories.  General knowledge of networking and storage concepts and terminology.  Virtual lab access requires a broadband internet connection. Learning Objectives: In this second module we will cover the following:  Planning a backup and recovery strategy.  Understanding the major backup job types and their functions.  Defining a backup job using the file system plug-in.  How to create and manage the sets used by all NetVault Backup jobs.  The usage, creation and management of a backup policy.  Understanding the options available for restoring data.  Working with the job management functions of NetVault Backup’s web-based UI.  Providing an overview of NetVault Backup 10’s reporting capabilities. Topics: Lesson 1 – Defining a Backup and Recovery Strategy  High level overview of data protection planning, including best practices and using data classification techniques during the planning process. Lesson 2 – Backup Process Overview • Backup types available and the functions they provide. • Choosing a data retention strategy. • Steps required and options used for defining backup jobs. Lesson 3 – Creating and Managing Sets • Discussion on the various types of sets used in backup, restore and reporting jobs.

Course Description • Creating full and incremental backups using the file system plug-in. Lesson 4 – Creating and Managing Backup Policies • Backup policy use cases. • Defining and modifying backup policies that protect multiple clients. Lesson 5 – Restoring Data • Review of the process used to restore data with NetVault Backup. • Advanced restore options and when to use them. Lesson 6 – Managing Jobs • Detailed review of functionality provided for managing your job definitions. Lesson 7 – NetVault Reports • Review of the predefined reports available in NetVault Backup 10. • Tailoring reporting options used to control report output delivery and format.

Module 3 & 4: NetVault Backup Advanced Administration Instructor-led Training Description: In the third module, we will discuss the features and functions provided for administering and monitoring key resources in the NetVault Backup domain. We will also discuss usage of the Data Copy, Consolidation and Raw Device backup built-in plugins. There will be a test at the end of the module. In the fourth module, we will discuss NetVault Backup’s support for virtual machines running in a VMware environment, protecting data stored on NAS storage using NDMP, and the backup and recovery of shared data in supported cluster environments. We will also cover the settings available for tailoring NetVault’s operation, NetVault Command Line Interface basics, and share troubleshooting tips that have been provided by Dell’s Technical Support organization. Prerequisites:  Completion of module one and two of the NetVault Backup Implementation & Administration Instructor-led Training course.  Working knowledge of system administration in a Windows, Linux/Unix, or Macintosh based operating environment.  Familiarity with basic backup and retrieval concepts and theories.  General knowledge of networking and storage concepts and terminology.  Virtual lab access requires a broadband internet connection. NetVault Backup’s support for protecting VMware based virtual machines. Key NDMP concepts, data transfer models and major features. Creating and managing a NetVault Virtual Client. Using cluster-aware plugins to protect shared data in supported clustered environments. Customizing NetVault settings to modify default behavior and tailor the systems operation. NetVault Backup’s Command Line Interface or CLI syntax and usage. NetVault Backup troubleshooting tips and addressing the most commonly reported issues.

Topics Module 3: Lesson 1 – Managing NetVault Storage Devices  A detailed review of the processes available for managing each type of NetVault Backup tape and disk storage device.  Using commands to check a devices status and perform management tasks.  Scanning savesets stored on devices and performing bulk labeling and blanking of tape media present in libraries. Lesson 2 – Managing Storage Media  Functions available for viewing disk and tape storage details.  Review of NetVault’s tape media management functions.  Viewing saveset details and performing saveset management functions. Lesson 3 – Advanced Backup Jobs  Methods provided by the Data Copy Plug-in to produce additional copies of savesets.  Creation of new full backup savesets using only prior full and incremental backup savesets.  Using the Raw Device Plug-in to protect entire systems disks, volumes and partitions. Lesson 4 – User Account Management  Creating new user accounts in NetVault Backup.  Limiting access to one or more client machines.  Restricting the functions a user account can perform.  Defining a user notification profile. Lesson 5 – Event Monitoring and Management  Functions provided to view and filter NetVault Backup Event Logs.  Review and configuration of NetVault’s Global Notification capabilities.  Using Custom Notifications with NetVault Backup. Lesson 6 – Working with NetVault Logs  Viewing and filtering log messages produced by NetVault Backup.  Exporting logs from NetVault Backup.  Setting up events based on selected log messages. Module 4: Lesson 1 – VMWare virtual machine backup and restore  Virtual machine protection in VMware environments.  Installing and configuring the Plugin for VMware.  SAN and Hot Add backup mode overviews.

Lesson 2 – Using the NetVault Backup Plugin for NDMP  Introduction to the Network Data Management Protocol and supported filers.  All data transfer protocols supported by NetVault Backup including the latest support for DR Appliances using a VTL container.  NDMP Plugin installation and configuration.  NDMP backup and restore basics. Lesson 3 – Working with Client Clusters  Supported clustered environments and introduction to NetVault virtual clients.  Creation and management of virtual clients and the installation of cluster-aware plugins.  Backup and restore considerations when protecting clustered data. Lesson 4 – Customizing NetVault Settings  Client settings page overview.  Settings groups available for customizing the NetVault Backup Server’s operation.  Detailed review of key backup server settings and their usage. Lesson 5 – NetVault CLI Command Line Interface  Introduction to the NetVault CLI and its syntax.  Using NetVault environment variables in a script.  High level overview of all NetVault command line utilities available. Lesson 6 – Troubleshooting Tips  Review of installation prerequisites and working with logs for support purposes.  Systems trace information generation guidelines.  Common error messages and possible causes.  Troubleshooting common issues reported to Dell Support.  Known issues and opening a support case.
