1. Introduction Recovering fast from the devastating earthquake in 2015, Idex’s Nepal program remains to be one of our most popular locations offering great volunteering, cultural and travel experiences. In 2016, we continue to support volunteers doing the good work that they have while we make significant improvements to the delivery of the volunteering experience.

2. Changes to the 2016 program The following changes are incorporated in the Nepal program for 2016 for the purpose of improvements:

1. IMPORTANT – the time window for airport pickup has been changed to 10 AM on the starting date of the program until 6 AM on day 2 of the program. This change has been done, keeping in mind the time availability for the customer to check in into the accommodation and also to allow customers to join the program which begins already on Day 2 of the program. 2. Under the project information, you will now find certain projects that have been placed under – “projects with additional requirements”. Please note that these projects have qualification requirements and/or will have a price different from that of other project varieties. 3. Please note that we now offer medical placements in certain locations and these come under “projects with additional requirements” – These requirements are related to costs. 4. We have found that a dinner with a local host family is a very popular and enjoyable cultural activity for the volunteers and for this purpose; it has been added to the experience of the program. 5. IMPORTANT: please pay attention to the sample daily schedule of the volunteers in the program and notice that volunteers now take packed lunches during the project days and spend a full day during the work time – this has been done to reduce the amount of travel during a day as well as create greater work hours and more impact from the volunteers’ work.

6. Please pay attention to the enhanced services list – these are the services that we have been offering in the program but have not been writing them in the documents. We believe that a full service list allows you to establish a better value of the programs. 7. Bollywood dance workshop has been removed from the Nepal volunteering program as an activity during the orientation week. 8. Please note that the Weekend excursion offered to Pokhara is a 2 nights, 3 days excursion to allow for transportation times. This is to be brought to the notice of all short term volunteering and travel participants. 9. The small shop facility is no longer available at the Nepal camp.

TEACHING Volunteers participate in educational enhancement for students of local communities specifically in the areas of English, Math, and Art and Craft. In order to encourage more volunteers to participate in this program, we provide detailed workbooks and guidelines for teaching. The Idex volunteers help with the education of the children through creative, interactive teaching methods that make learning enjoyable. Imparting English language skills is extremely beneficial to children’s education and further employment. It does not require for the volunteers to be a professional teacher or teaching experience before. ACTIVITIES  Teaching English, Math and functional literacy.    

Games and sports activities. Teacher motivation and training. Children attendance tracking. First – aid training and fun/recreation activities.

 

Community visit & tracking of school drop-outs. To create play and learning atmosphere by teaching learning materials.

Elderly Home - Pashupatinath Social Welfare Centre Briddhashram is the only Elderly's Home operated by His Majesty's Government in the Kingdom Nepal. It was established in 1882 A.D and operated as being the Panchadeval Pakshala in the regime of His Majesty Surendra Vir Vikram Shah. Now at present, it is being operated by the name of Social Welfare Centre. Elderly's Home, Pashupati since 1977 A.D. The total sheltering capacity of this Elderly Home is 230 persons. Elderly home is situated next to one of the Cultural Heritage site “Pashupatinath Temple” and is 03 kms (approx.) away from Idex accommodation. Activities  

5|Page

         

Making their beds including arranging their belongings. Help them in performing nature’s call & taking bath. Washing & drying their clothes. Managing the dried clothes, bed sheets, etc. Clean the surroundings. Help them in eating food and feed them (who are unable to eat). Cleaning their utensils. Applying oil / cream (Massaging) in their head & body. Taking care of health & hygiene (cutting the nails, shaving their beard, etc). Moving them inside the dormitory and cleaning the outside after meal.

Orphanage care *

Poverty, past conflicts and emergencies such as earthquakes and flooding have seriously affected the people of Nepal, and turned many children into orphans, with many of them arriving in urban centers like Kathmandu and Chitwan in search for a better life. As there are insufficient Government initiatives to protect and help these children, orphanages have been set-up on need basis, where the children are educated and taken care of, and where the enthusiasm and energy of volunteers is greatly needed and appreciated.

ACTIVITIES      

Helping with homework. English teaching. Computer training. Helping slower learning children. Playing with children e.g. games, singing, painting, any kind of sports activity etc. Teaching and checking health skills (washing, changing clothes). General care and support.

*Orphanages in Nepal have come under the media scanner in 2015 as there were orphanages found that were set up to receive volunteers or tourists and thereby having the kids being separated from their parents for financial reasons. We request you to review the profiles of each of the orphanages that we are collaborating with so that you can rest assured as well as handle any media enquiries that may be coming through in the future.

Beautification & Renovation “A School should look like the garden of learning” Idex encourages its volunteers to take the initiative to build, renovate and beautify common public facilities like government schools, Day care centers etc. Since most of the public facilities are deprived of basic infrastructure and cleanliness, it is Idex’s endeavor to work for making the facilities more people friendly and beneficial for the local communities.

ACTIVITIES     

Spreading awareness among community regarding maintenance of children’s center through community visits, involving them in beautification work. Beautification of work area, classrooms, children’s centers with the help of community. Painting & drawing educational, creative matter on walls, chart papers. ECE material development for use as a Teaching Aid. Making blackboards for children’s use.

Special requirements for beautification and renovation:   

Physically fit to be able to do physical work. Confirm with the Account Manager at Idex about the number of participants during that date. We need minimum 2 bookings at a time to make this project successful. A price supplement of Euro 70 per week is applicable.

Medical projects: Under the medical projects, volunteers are placed in hospitals and clinics where they work alongside the medical staff and attending the needs of the patients. They will interact with patients and observe doctors/nurses and clinic staff at a local clinic/hospital. Volunteer tasks will vary depending on the level of experience and the skills they have. It is also important for participants to know that there may not be a visible

7|Page

“acute need” for volunteers to serve as these placements are usually done at hospitals.

Special requirements at Medical projects:     

CV for medical volunteering program which include their qualifications, experiences, skills and specialization. Participants need medical background or related skills to attend this program. Participants need certificates or relevant documents to show their qualification, experience or background of their medical placement. A letter to show their interest area for participation in the medical field. A price supplement of Euro 70 per week is applicable.

4. How project allocation is done. From 2016, we are bringing more minute details and rigor into how we manage our volunteering program as well as how people are placed there. This is being done to ensure that we have the right way to allocate projects such that each volunteer can be supported and as many as possible number of projects can have a steady flow of volunteer support. While there will be exceptions, a majority of volunteering placements will be done in the following sequence of steps: 1. You (our partner) will receive a booking from a participant. 2. You will fill up the online booking form of Idex and there you will add all the preferred placement types (based on what is available at a location) into the Priority 1, Priority 2 and Priority 3 fields (all 3 priorities are mandatory). 3. Once we receive the online booking, we would allocate a specific project where the participant would be placed. 4. We will then send all the documentation related to the program schedules, itinerary, placement etc. to the participants (either directly or through you) – leaving them with a complete set of information they need to know everything about their upcoming experience. 5. It will be our effort to bring as much precision to the exact placement as possible and the exact placement is subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances or factors beyond our control.

5. Our Location Kathmandu The city is the urban core of the Kathmandu Valley in the Himalayas, which contains two sister cities: Lalitpur (Patan), 5 kilometers (3.1 mi) to its south and Bhaktapur or Bhadgaon, 12 kilometers (7.5 mi) to its east, and a number of smaller towns. It is also acronymed as 'KTM' and named 'tri-city'. Kathmandu, and particularly the tourist area Thamel, has a large variety of Western food, shopping, guest houses and Internet cafes,

8|Page

however even this can have an old world feel with its labyrinth of small restaurants and shops. Stay in a typical Nepali Volunteer house replete with modern amenities and just immerse in the cultural journey in the heart of Nepal in the capital of Kathmandu. Work on our various projects- teach English, assist in any other teaching, implement creative teaching methods, or computers, or train local teachers in a particular school. You could also spend time with orphaned kids, and help them with their homework, or teach them English/ Maths/ and make them feel loved and cared for. Also, train the women around in some skill/ English/ Maths/ Computers, or create awareness amongst them about their rights. Better still, spend time with the elderly, work in health care, or create awareness about socially relevant causes.
