Teams are awarded three points for each conference win in regulation or 5-on-5 overtime, and one point for a 5-on-5 overtime tie. Conference games still tied after a five-minute 5-on-5 overtime advance to a five-minute 3-on-3 overtime (and sudden victory shootout if still tied) with the team that wins the second overtime/shootout receiving an extra point in the standings (3/SW in the standings). A 3-on-3 overtime or shootout win then is worth two points in the standings while the team that loses the 3-on-3 overtime/shootout receives just one point for the tie. The 3-on-3 overtime and shootouts only affect conference standings while the game is officially a tie for NCAA purposes.

Friday’s Highlights and Notes
• Home teams went 3-1 in the four games involving NCHC teams Friday, including the home team winning all three conference games, which were also the first conference wins of the season for Miami, Omaha and Denver (for DU it was its conference opener). NCHC teams have been impressive at home this season, posting a combined record of 20-9-1 (.683). In conference play so far, NCHC teams have gone 7-2-0 (.778). • The eighth-ranked Omaha Mavericks moved to 3-0 at Baxter Arena with a 4-2 win over No. 6/7 Minnesota Duluth, which was playing in its conference opener. UNO junior forward Austin Ortega tallied a goal and an assist with his goal the game-winner. He now has five game-winners (in seven UNO wins) on the season, which leads the NCAA, while his 17 career game-winning goals are six more than any other active NCAA player and only six away from tying the NCAA career game-winning goals record. Ortega’s eight overall goals this year also lead the NCAA. • Omaha freshman goaltender Evan Weninger recorded a career-high 45 saves in the win over UMD, which was also the most saves by any Mavericks netminder this season. Weninger’s previous best outing was 40 saves Oct. 10 in his debut at Minnesota State. Weninger has a .955 save percentage this season, which is fifth nationally and first among rookies. • Miami picked up its first conference win in three tries and snapped a three-game losing streak with a 2-1 victory over Western Michigan, which suffered its first conference loss in three games. MU freshman forward Jack Roslovic scored his team-best sixth goal of the season in the win, which is tops nationally among freshmen. All nine of Roslovic’s points this season have either tied the game or given Miami the lead (his goal tied the game Friday) while he has at least one point in eight of nine games so far in his collegiate career. • Denver sophomore forward Danton Heinen tallied a goal and an assist in the Pioneers’ 5-3 win over Colorado College Friday, marking DU’s fifth straight win over its Gold Pan rival. It was Heinen’s third multi-point game this season as he now has five points (3g, 2a) in his last three games after just two points (1g, 1a) in his first four games of the season. • Colorado College junior forward Luc Gerdes scored two goals in CC’s 5-3 loss to No. 9/12 Denver. It was his first career multi-goal game and his first goals of the season. He entered his junior campaign with five career goals, including four as a sophomore. • No. 1/1 North Dakota suffered its first loss of the season in the only non-conference game Friday as UND fell to former WCHA rival Wisconsin, 3-1. The loss snapped UND’s NCAA-best eight-game unbeaten streak to start the season and also snapped a 12-game home unbeaten streak (110-1) for North Dakota dating back to January of last season. The loss also marked UND’s first regular season non-conference loss since the 2014-15 season opener to Bemidji State as North Dakota had gone 13-0-3 outside of NCHC play since the loss to BSU.
Friday Round-up/Inter-Conference Records Denver, Miami and Omaha Earn First Conference Wins of Season UND suffers first loss of season in only non-conference game Friday
A
fter three National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) teams earned sweeps on the opening weekend of conference play last weekend, three different NCHC teams picked up their first wins in conference play on Friday as all three home teams won the conference contests. No. 9/12 Denver opened NCHC play with a 5-3 win over rival Colorado College, while No. 8/8 Omaha bounced back from being swept to top No. 6/7 Minnesota Duluth, 4-2, in UMD’s conference opener. No. 19 Miami also rebounded from being swept by edging Western Michigan, 2-1. In the lone non-conference game Friday, No. 1/1 North Dakota suffered its first loss of the season with a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Wisconsin. Former CCHA rivals collided at Steve Cady Arena in Oxford where No. 19 Miami edged Western Michigan, 2-1, to pick up its first conference win of the season while handing the Broncos (4-3-1, 2-1-0-0 NCHC) their first conference loss of the campaign. WMU sophomore defenseman Paul Stoykewych opened the game’s scoring less than five minutes into the contest, but three minutes later Miami freshman forward Jack Roslovic struck on the power play to tie the game. Fellow freshman Josh Melnick then tallied the game-winner midway through the second period. Junior forward Anthony Louis assisted on both goals for the RedHawks (4-4-1, 1-2-0-0 NCHC), while senior goalie Ryan McKay made 23 saves in the win. The long-time rivals complete their series Saturday at 8 p.m. ET with the game available on NCHC.tv. In another big rivalry series, No. 9/12 Denver opened conference play with a 5-3 victory over Colorado College at Magness Arena to take the first leg in the battle for the Gold Pan. The Pioneers (4-3-0, 1-0-0-0 NCHC) used a three-goal second period to break a 1-1 tie and grab a 4-1 lead through 40 minutes. CC struck twice in the first half of the third period to close within one but an empty-net goal sealed the Tigers’ (0-9-0, 0-3-0-0 NCHC) fate. Sophomore forward Danton Heinen led DU with a goal and an assist while junior forward Trevor Moore’s goal late in the second stanza turned out to be the game-winner. Junior goalie Evan Cowley stopped 20 shots to earn the win in net as DU outshot CC, 38-23. The two rivals complete their home-and-home series Saturday at The Broadmoor World Arena in Colorado Springs at 7:07 p.m. MT with the game on NCHC.tv. The third conference game of the night saw No. 8/8 Omaha shake off last weekend’s sweep at the hands of WMU to pick up its first conference win of the season with a 4-2 victory over No. 6/7 Minnesota Duluth at Baxter Arena, spoiling UMD’s conference opener. The Mavericks (7-2-0, 1-2-0-0 NCHC) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first period and fought off a comeback from the Bulldogs (3-3-2, 0-1-0-0 NCHC), who outshot the Mavericks, 47-28, in the game. UNO fresh-
man goalie Evan Weninger earned the win in net with 45 saves, while junior forward Austin Ortega scored the game-winner on the power play in the second period and added an assist for a two-point night. The game-winner was Ortega’s NCAA-leading fifth this season and 17th of his career, the most among all active NCAA players. Classmate Jake Guentzel chipped in two assists. The teams complete their NCHC series Saturday at 7:07 p.m. CT with the game available on NCHC.tv. In the lone non-conference game of the night, No. 1/1 North Dakota was stunned by Wisconsin, 3-1, at Ralph Engelstad Arena, handing UND its first loss of the season and snapping an eight-game unbeaten streak to start the season. North Dakota (6-1-2, 2-0-0-0 NCHC) opened the scoring on a goal from junior forward Luke Johnson in the first period, but the Badgers (3-3-3, 0-0-0-0 B1G) answered minutes later and added two goals in the second stanza to earn the win. UND outshot Wisconsin, 30-23, in the loss, while junior goalie Matt Hrynkiw made 20 saves for North Dakota. The former WCHA rivals complete their series Saturday at 7:07 p.m. CT with the game on NCHC.tv and Midco Sports Network.
