Dear Handball Friends, On behalf of the European Handball Federation, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to the Group Phase of the VELUX EHF Champions League 2015/16. As we enter the opening stages of the 23rd season, we are looking forward in anticipation to a fresh challenge for Europe’s top teams as a new playing system is introduced with more teams and many more tough and exciting matches for fans to enjoy. Starting the season are 28 of the continent’s leading teams, the expanded field representing 20 countries from across Europe. Denmark, Spain, France, Hungary, FYR Macedonia and Poland each have two teams in the competition this season, whilst Germany is the only country represented by three clubs. Thanks to the expanded number of participants, fans can look forward to a record-breaking number of 176 matches in the Group Phase, which is an increase of 56 games compared to the last season. The VELUX EHF Champions League is a living product, and as such needs to adapt and change over time, which is why it was decided introduce these important changes this season. The new system will involve more teams and more markets whilst at the same time creating a playing modus that produces close matches throughout the competition. Sixteen teams will compete in Groups A and B in the new playing system, while Groups C and D contain six teams each. The best two teams from C and D will make it through to the Last 16 where they will join the teams placed two to six from Groups A and B. The two group winners qualify directly for the quarter-finals stage. There are five clubs in the competition with a EHF Champions League title to their name. The defending champions and record winners, FC Barcelona Lassa, will launch their new campaign from Group B together with the 2002/03 trophy holders Montpellier Handball, whilst three-time winners THW Kiel will play in Group A with 2013/14 champions, SG Flensburg-Handewitt, and the 2003/04 winners Celje Pivovarna Lasko. IFK Kristianstad, Vojvodina, HCM Baia Mare and the qualifier Elverum will also make their premiere amongst the heavyweights of European handball, but there will be no time for the newcomers to find their feet with tough clashes promised right from the very first round. The dream of Cologne and the VELUX EHF FINAL4 may seem a distant one as the season throws off but there is much to look forward to over the months ahead. Logroño fue reconocida como ‘Ciudad Europea del Deporte’ y ostentamos con orgullo este reconocimiento durante 2014, pero hoy, seguimos teniendo y trabajando con este mismo sentimiento “de Ciudad del Deporte”, porque somos una ciudad que vive el deporte, con unos ciudadanos entregados a la práctica deportiva y a los hábitos de vida saludables que promueve. Logroño es deporte, y creemos en los valores que el deporte trasmite. En este sentido, representa un gran honor para esta Ciudad acoger la celebración de la segunda jornada de la VELUX EHF Champions League. Un campeonato esperado por la afición y los equipos más en forma de la Liga Europea, como el Tratan Presov de Slovakia, al que se enfrentan hoy en el Palacio de los Deportes para que podamos vivir la emoción del mejor balonmano de Europa. Quiero agradecer al Club Balonmano Ciudad de Logroño y a todos quienes han trabajado para que Logroño se convierta, hoy, en el epicentro balonmano. La celebración de este partido de liga europea nos va a permitir exhibir la imagen de una ciudad moderna, preparada y comprometida con el deporte. Logroño es una ciudad que fomenta el deporte y que ha demostrado que es capaz de acoger grandes eventos deportivos nacionales e internacionales que resultan un éxito. Mi felicitación al Club Balonmano Ciudad de Logroño por el esfuerzo realizado y con ello su logro de disputar esta competición europea. Os deseo muchos éxitos y que sigáis siendo un excelente embajador de nuestra ciudad, llevando el buen nombre de Logroño, con orgullo y con deportividad, por todos los lugares que visitéis. Es mi deseo que hoy, disfrutemos todos del deporte de más alta categoría, abonados, aficionados y que los deportistas, visitantes, así como los organizadores disfruten de todo lo que ofrece esta Ciudad, del carácter abierto y acogedor de los logroñeses, porque el cariño y la hospitalidad también van en paralelo a los eventos que acoge Logroño. ¡Que todos participéis y disfrutéis de todo cuanto ofrece Logroño¡ Concepción Gamarra Ruiz-Clavijo Alcaldesa de Logroño

Prešov Eslovaquia Prešov está ubicada en el valle del río Torysa, en la confluencia con su afluente Sekey Sekčov, en el este de Eslovaquia. Prešov tiene una población de 92.000 habitantes, siendo la tercera ciudad más grande de Eslovaquia, sólo por detrás de Bratislava y de Košice. La ciudad es una muestra de las arquitecturas Barroca, Rococó y Gótica. En el centro histórico, la calle principal está alineada con iglesias y otros edificios construidos en base a dichos estilos. Sin embargo, en los suburbios, la influencia de la Unión Soviética es bastante evidente debido a la gran cantidad de edificios de concreto para departamentos (los panelák) de Sídliská (casas del estado) y del distrito Sekčov. Otras arquitecturas del estilo soviético pueden ser vistos en los edificios gubernamentales cerca del centro de la ciudad. Un significativo número de industrias en Prešov incluyen compañías de ingeniería eléctrica y mecánica así como industria textil. Solivary, la única compañía de procesamiento de sal en Eslovaquia, también opera en la ciudad. La ciudad también es centro de un arzobispado ortodoxo. Centro cultural donde se celebran conciertos, operas, operettas y diversas presentaciones tienen lugar en la nueva construcción del teatro Jonáš Záborský (Divadlo Jonáša Záborského).
