Gas Engines run in 1860 - But prior designs were patented as early as 1807

IGF-Code Background The Maritime Safety Committee (MSC 78, May 2004) approved a new work programme item: “Development of international regulations for gas-fuelled ships” The Sub-Committee on Bulk Liquid and Gases commenced the development at its 8th session (BLG 8, 2004) and established a correspondence group under the co-ordination of Norway to further progress the work

IGF – Code process In commencing the work in 2004, the sub-committee on bulk liquid and gases decided on a two step approach: 1.

Development of interim guidelines for gas-fuelled ships.

2.

Development of a Code of safety for gas-fuelled ships

MSC 86 (2009) approved “Interim guidelines on safety for natural gasfuelled engine installation in ships” Resolution MSC.285(86).

The IGF-Code The development of the IGF-Code started in 2009 In 2010 it was agreed to ask MSC for an extension of the scope to also cover other gases and low flash-point fuels - MSC agreed. However at the last session of BLG in February 2013, it was agreed to finalize the Code for natural gas as a first step.

HTW - Training for Gas Fuelled Ship Crew The Sub-Committee on Human Element, Training and WatchKeeping developed mandatory training requirements for officers and crew on board ships using gases or other low flashpoint Fuels at its last session in Feb. 2014.
