Thatch We discovered this finely pinstriped paper in a circa 1912 wallpaper book, and were taken by its soft glow and enigmatic shade — not yellow, not orange, but some soft warm color of an indeterminate shade, that serves as a perfect background for other period colors. It is the lightest of our color families.

Lion and Dove Frieze

The low intensity of early lightbulbs guaranteed the popularity of reflective ceilings, giving the illusion of added light. Ceilings with and without box beams were outlined, sometimes with elaborate corners. Gilded Faux Burlap Ceiling provides an ethereal glow.

This magnificent work was originally the creation of the prolific 19th century illustrator and social activist Walter Crane. It is his critical response to the Second Boer War (1899-1902) fought between British forces and two South African republics. In this very floral design (c.1901) Crane features the belligerent British Imperial Lion being gently pacified by the white Dove of Peace. The meandering banner text “The Wilderness shall blossom as the ROSE” is a paraphrase of the prophetic words found in the first verse of the 35th chapter of the Bible Book of Isaiah. Lion and Dove is also available as a 21" frieze in our Arts & Crafts II collection (see page 19).
