The NPFF Road Show

A great way for your organization to earn money for river conservation or causes!

The National Paddling Film Festival Road Show has been developed to expand the NPFF's outreach to the public. Do you want to share this exciting event with the paddlers back home? Then get involved with an NPFF Road Show and the best of this innovative festival can come to you! By holding a National Paddling Film Festival Roadshow your group can enjoy quality paddlesport films while painlessly fundraising for your own local projects as well as helping us further our efforts with American Whitewater and other conservation and access charities. Here is how it works: A paddling club, conservation organization, university, philanthropist, or commercial outdoor enterprise donates $200 to the NPFF in exchange for 5 hours, which is 300 minutes of paddlesport, (mostly whitewater) video. We provide the entertainment and you do the rest. Sounds simple, it is simple. All we ask in return is for a contract, credit card deposit, a little advertising, and that you be a good organization/ person doing good things. The videos come from the NPFF’s extensive paddlesport library covering amateur and professional entries from 25 years of festivals. Most of our films are on DVD. Don’t need five hours of video? We will package up 2 hour mini-shows for $100 plus overnight shipping. We also offer a sliding fee option for special needs organizations. We would like to send a big thanks to all videographers and video artists who have graciously allowed the NPFF to showcase and market their films for waterway conservation The NPFF Roadshow is a winning situation for all involved: More paddlers will have the opportunity to view the latest and best in paddlesport images. Clubs and organizations can generate local conservation effort funds from the NPFF Roadshow, or add a video show to an existing, established event. Video artists have an opportunity to expose and market their work to targeted audiences. The NPFF can continue contributing money to waterway conservation efforts beyond the festival. The Roadshow has been seen in several dozen cities in over 18 states, Canada and Europe. Thousands of dollars have been raised for local organizations and the programs they support. So, go find an independent theater, college/university, or any other film friendly event,

Our Guest Host: Fred Norquist

NPFF 2014 Presents Guest Host Fred Norquist Fred Norquist is currently one of the preeminent whitewater filmmakers in the world. He grew up in Carbondale, CO and began paddling when he was 14. He runs the stouts with style and grace, but is equally gifted as a filmmaker.

Welcome to NPFF 2014 Welcome to the 31st National Paddling Film Festival! I’m delighted that you all came from far and near to celebrate the best in paddlesport videos and images. NPFF was initiated and continues to be staffed by the Bluegrass Wildwater Association—a whitewater club in central Kentucky (definitely not your typical boating club….). The first festival in 1982 literally took place in a barn at the Kentucky Horse Park and was inspired by footage that was taken on the Russell Fork Gorge. So much has changed over the years—the venue has changed a number of times, film formats have evolved, equipment (both paddlesport equipment and camera equipment) has improved immensely, even the styles of kayaking have changed drastically—but we’ve grown with the changes and have maintained the festival for over 30 years. We are extremely proud of that!

Fred is half of the brain trust behind Substantial Media House, along with Evan Garcia. These guys are putting out some of the best footage out there.

Y’all are in for a real treat this year! Fred Norquist, our guest host, is currently one of the preeminent whitewater filmmakers in the world. He grew up in Carbondale, CO and began paddling when he was 14. He runs the stouts with style and grace, but is equally gifted as a filmmaker. Fred is half of the brain trust behind Substantial Media House, along with Evan Garcia. These guys are putting out some of the best footage out there. We’re eagerly anticipating hearing about Fred’s perspective on the ins and outs and trials and tribulations of filmmaking.

We are stoked to welcome Fred to Kentucky and to hear all about his adventures behind (and in front of) the camera

The theme of the film lineup this year is short and sweet. Many of the entries are short in length but are packed full of goodness in terms of scenery, editing, and storylines. The competition in the upstairs auditorium is definitely going to be fierce. In addition, the still image competition that will be taking place downstairs near the silent auction will also be intense. Check out that area and vote for your favorite image. The focus of NPFF is to showcase the best in paddlesport videos and images and in doing so, to raise money. We are dedicated to funneling the money we make to river conservation efforts. We donate the largest portion of our proceeds to American Whitewater (make sure to renew your membership at the AW booth downstairs), but give to smaller groups like Friends of the Cheat, West Virginia Rivers Coalition, and Ecuadorian Rivers Institute as well. Putting on this festival is a 100% grassroots effort; we are completely volunteer-run. Check out all the donor ads and logos when you have a moment. These are the people that help make this festival happen! Your attendance at the festival also makes this happen. If we didn’t have people to entertain with great films, stills, food and beer, the show would not go on. I am truly grateful that you’re here. Enjoy the festival! Bethany Overfield, 2014 NPFF Coordinator

The Puma

On December 28th, 2013 A group of stout masters decided to head to the Rio Fuy, we had one thing on our minds, and it has been on my mind for almost 6 years now…THE PUMA! To this day Salto de la Puma is still the tallest waterfall ever run in Chile. We unofficially yet accurately measured the drop this year to be around 35-36 meters tall (110-115 feet) This combined with it's difficult entry and dangerous landing zone makes The Puma, in my mind, is one of the most technical waterfalls in the world. With the 2nd descent going down just 10 days earlier by a young German paddler...The time was now. With the right level, group, and experience, Evan Garcia stepped up for the third descent...This is the story. Evan Garcia

The National Paddling Film Festival’s William Nealy Award:The Story Behind the Award

The William Nealy award is given to honor extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of paddle sport arts and imagery, or for outstanding service to the National Paddling Film Festival. The William Nealy Award is to continue the original goal and purpose of the Film Festival which was to encourage those who would communicate in various art forms the enthusiasm that we have for paddling, the wonderful places where we paddle and the excitement and satisfaction we find in paddlesports.

The late William Nealy has occupied a special place in the BWA's collective heart for many years. His early support of the NPFF included generous donations of original artwork which greatly helped to raise the profile of the film festival. William also donated his time and opinions at several early film festivals by serving as a judge for the amateur entries. William was an occasional visitor to other BWA events including the legendary "Hot Tub” Beginner Clinic held at the Emory/Obed river. The notorious Saturday evening party held that evening has sparked countless tales of free flowing pitchers of mint juleps amid wild carrying-ons by many. It was enough to inspire William to take note of the BWA and some of its members in his Whitewater Home Companion Volume I. William Nealy was a co-founder and author of Menasha Ridge Press. He was a “whitewater rebel” who had a wonderful and imaginative mind. As a paddler you always knew the characters in his cartoons and had lived and experienced what happened to them in his stories. It was with these appreciative thoughts of William's creative genius, love of fun and generosity of spirit that we dedicated the 2002 NPFF to him and established the “William Nealy Award”. The BWA wanted to continue to celebrate William's spirit. His profound influence in the whitewater boaters community and his lasting contributions to paddlesports was something that will inspire future generations. It is with this award that we continue to recognize that inspiration. The NPFF is looking for your suggestions for a nominee for the William Nealy Award. If you have a person you would like to nominate please write us with your reasoning as to why this person would be a good choice for receiving the William Nealy Award. NPFF Motion Competition Explained:

For about three decades the National Paddling Film Festival has been hosting a competition to determine the best in paddle sport videos and images. This competition has provided the paddling community with a fun and profitable event to support American Whitewater and river conservation. The NPFF has also helped to raise the quality of paddle sport entertainment by providing recognition of talent along with important and useful feedback for the image artists who make the show a possibility. Thanks to the judges and the contribution of their valued written opinions along with the organizational work of the film festival volunteers, hundreds of amateur, accomplished and professional image artists have been better able to gauge the audience's enjoyment of their work and gain the encouragement and information helpful for creating even more entertaining art in the future. In 2006, the volunteers of the National Paddling Film Festival made a few changes to the structure of the festival in an effort to put more focus on the film and image competition and enhance the judging process. As in previous years, the NPFF volunteers will continue to prejudge all entries and also to invite volunteer judges who are either motion picture and television media professionals, accomplished and professional paddling filmmakers or representatives of paddling organizations to lend their scores and opinions to determine the winners. The difference in this process is that our invited judges will now be making their judgments prior to the festival instead of the day of the show. By making this change, the organizers of the NPFF are hoping to increase the number and diversity of qualified judges and provide more time for the judges to score and make their comments about the entries. Phase 1 Judging - viewing and written prejudging by NPFF Film Committee volunteers of all entries received for the competition with the results determining the final film fest show length of approximately 8 hours with an equal distribution of amateur, accomplished and professional entries. Phase 2 Judging - consists viewing and written prejudging by invited judges. Media professionals will be judging the Professional Division entries with professional paddling filmmakers and paddling industry representatives judging the Accomplished Division and representatives of the paddling community judging the Amateur Division. Show - Feb. 22-23, 2013- Winners of the competition are announced during the show with the audience voting their pick for the Paddler's Choice Award. NPFF Motion Entry Divisions: 1. Amateur: Films made for the personal enjoyment of the maker and friends. To qualify in this category, films must be entirely created by amateur artists and cannot be available for sale to the general public, but may be given to people for the cost of the medium (e.g. video cassette). Entries in this division must be no longer than 15 minutes. 2. Accomplished: This category includes those films by persons who have significant experience in media production, but whose primary jobs/income are not associated with the production of films or videos. Films qualifying for this category can be, but do not have to be, available to the general public for purchase. Entries in this division must be no longer than 30 minutes. 3. Professional: An entry belongs in the Professional category if some aspect of film or video production is

Buffalo Trace Tour Information Buffalo Trace Distillery offers three distinct tours year-round: Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-3 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Tours start on the hour and are complimentary. The Trace Tour is a journey through the origins of Buffalo Trace Distillery, bourbon in Kentucky and Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. Experience a century-old aging warehouse. Walk down the line of our hand bottling hall—where all of our premium bourbons receive lots of TLC before leaving the distillery. The Hard Hat Tour takes guests behind the scenes of the bourbon-making process to see where the magic happens. From the grain delivery to the cooking process to the fermentation tanks, you will see it all firsthand. This tour is available during distilling season. Please call for reservations.

www.endlessriveradventures.com

The Post Prohibition Tour exposes visitors to the architecture and history of the post-Prohibition bourbon industry. The end of Prohibition was a new beginning for the Distillery. Buffalo Trace survived Prohibition as one of only four distilleries to remain operational for “medicinal purposes,” and with repeal, America was suddenly a very thirsty nation again. Witness the building boom that occurred during this time (1930-1950) and get a peek at some of the future plans for Buffalo Trace Distillery. Please call for tour times. Burgess Carey is a whitewater paddler and consumer of whitewater products since the early 1980's. Sometimes a "has been" and always an armchair athlete, past involvement in the BWA and NPFF has resulted in much controversy and scurrilous remarks. Professionally intent on changing the world one outdoor venture at a time, Burgess is the current steward of the Boone Creek Outdoors project and when not watching paddling films can often be found sleeping "Down by the River" in his van. Jonathan Morrison is an Producer and Editor for WTIU, a PBS station in Bloomington, Indiana.  He is an avid paddler and loves to hit the water every chance he gets.  Jonathan also loves to camp, snowboard, hike, bike and do pretty much anything outdoors.  He is owner of Birddog Studios, a freelance production company that specializes in music recording, video and audio production, marketing & photography. Spalding Hurst is a native of Bardstown, KY. He graduated from Full Sail University with an Associates of Science in Film and Video. After 10 years in television he is currently in communications with the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, helping tell the story of the congregations global ministries through all forms of media. Whether in Kentucky or travelling, Spalding enjoys whitewater kayaking whenever or wherever he can find it. Erin Galey, hailing from Pittsburgh, PA, started kayaking in college while working as a raft guide in the Grand Canyon.  She gypsy kayaked for several years after college, working in places like Morocco, Zambia, Nepal, and the Pennsylvania/Maryland/West Virginia area.  She began work in the film industry with a role in A&E's Rollergirls when she moved to Austin, TX. From there, she went on to work on various commercials, short films, and music videos, often alongside cult director Bradley Beesley, like on the music video "The W.A.N.D." for the Flaming Lips.

Evan Garcia
