National and local cooperation between Authorities: The case of Denmark.

Kurt Markworth Chief City Engineer City of Aalborg, Technical Department Denmark

Cooperation and ITS • The traffic on roads between cities grows year by year. • Investments only in more roads can not solve these challenges. • An additional solution is Intelligent Transport System (ITS).

Technical Department

Cooperation and ITS • However, ITS is often complicated to develop and maintain. • A single organization in a medium sized city has often not sufficient know how. • So the answer is cooperation Technical Department

City of Aalborg

Aalborg

Technical Department

• The fourth biggest municipality in Denmark with 163,000 inhabitants. • The metropol in North Denmark. • 560km2. • Located where the distance over the Limfjord is shortest and hence Aalborg is a transport corridor north-south.

Local level • The Municipality of Aalborg has been part in developing several ITS projects since 1992. The projects were developed in cooperation with the Police, The Danish Road Directorate, North Jutland County and North Jutland Public Transport Authority.

Regional level • In a cooperation between the municipality and the Public Transport Authority in the region several new measures in Aalborg have been developed. • The projects have been part of the VIVALDI project in the CIVITAS programme from EU. Technical Department

Regional level • ITS platform for steering and operating a compact bus terminal, • Bus Computers in every bus, • RTPI at terminals and on super bus stops, • TIC and • Bus Priority in main signalized intersections. Technical Department

Lessons learned Open architecture is a good solution. • But there are some demands: – There must be sufficient know how in the organization. – There must be a tight steering during all the project.

Technical Department

National level • Journey Planner • Travel Card

Technical Department

Journey Planner • The Danish nationwide Journey planner • Easing access to public/multimodal transport by giving easy access to information • Find the shortest/best trip • Combine different routes • ’ad on’ services

www.rejseplanen.dk Technical Department

A great success • 145.000 users on average a day. It is the most used site from authorities in Denmark. • More passengers in Public Transport. Surveys show that people are using more PT than before, among other factors because of easy access to information. • Big savings in public transport info services. • It has resulted in an improved image of public transport. Technical Department

Travel Card - One common system for all public transport in Denmark - One fare system – one card (contact free chip card) - Simple to use - Pre paid, automatic load or post paid. - A large project Technical Department

Progression • The Travel Card will be implemented in a pilot area in mid 2007. • It will be implemented on Sealand mid 2008. • It will be implemented in parts of Jutland mid 2009.
