Air pollution and Parkinson disease: a GIS-Based Approach NIEHS/K01 ES019183 Role: PI ($595,786) The major goal of this study is to examine the association between air pollution (derived using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and risk of Parkinson disease within the Nurses Health Study I, and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study.
2010-2012
The Epidemiology of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Chronic Fatigue Initiative (Foundation) Role: Project Director ($241,580.87) The major goal of this study is to identify, within three large prospective cohorts of nurses and health professionals, those participants who meet the criteria for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), and use these data to conduct epidemiologic analyses in search of risk factors for CFS.
Under Review
Vitamin D and Risk of Parkinson Disease NIEHS R01 Role: PI ($2,789,507) Initially Submitted June 2013, to be Submitted again January 2015 Parkinson disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease with no known cure that has a large negative impact on the quality of life of patients, their families, and society. There is consistent evidence that environmental factors strongly influence PD risk. This project will take advantage of longitudinal data collected for over 30 years from three large populations of US health professionals to examine the effects serum and dietary vitamin D and vitamin D related genes on the risk of PD. Air Pollution and Multiple Sclerosis NIEHS R21, Multiple Sclerosis Society Role: PI (budget TBD) Submitted Oct 2013 as R01, to be submitted March 2015 as R21 The cause of MS remains subject to intense investigation, and environmental factors are believed to contribute strongly to MS risk and progression. In the proposed study, we will use two well-established prospective cohorts of US women with well-validated pollution-exposure models in an attempt to answer the
3
question whether exposure to air pollution contributes to MS risk and progression. We will supplement and replicate this effort in GEMS, an innovative study of first-degree relatives of MS patients that will allow us to examine whether pollution could increase risk of MS among a genetically susceptible population.
