y philosophy on education is setting up a partnership of learning between student and teacher is essential and becomes the foundation for learning that enables every student to maximize and reach beyond their perceived potential in a safe, accepting environment. Spending quality time teaching communication, cooperation and friendship skills is crucial to classroom management. The interpersonal relationship between teacher and student is a key component in student achievement. Teachers need to be real and genuine with students, creating a trust that allows the students to feel their opinions matter. Once trust is built it is easier to facilitate students to engage in experiential learning, allowing them to make mistakes, learning from them and moving on, in a safe and trusting environment, which is what we have achieved at both of our schools.

Instructional programs should have several levels of instruction to include all levels of students. Effort is being made to increase education equity for a range of cultural, ethnic and economic groups. All students at Riverside receive an education that continuously affirms human diversity, embraces history and culture from all racial groups. Students regardless of culture should be provided the best opportunity to learn. At Riverside our classrooms facilitate student learning by providing plenty of resources that help to stimulate student’s thinking, openness to ideas, imagination etc. We have provided resources that help students to become lifelong critical thinkers. The most successful people and organizations of the future will be those that are capable of rapidly and effectively bringing about lasting, system-wide changes. Our students deserve new and innovative ways of creating a new future for their families and generations to come! At Riverside, we are making a difference in our community!

I am a 36 year old retail manger, family member, and parent of a 4 year old attending the Early Intervention Program at Riverside Elementary School. y name is State Senator Steve Gallardo and I grew up on the playgrounds of Maryvale, AZ. I attended grade school at Starlight Park Elementary School in the Cartwright Elementary School District and Trevor Brown High School in the Phoenix Union School District. I attended college in Arizona and worked for Maricopa County for 14 years. I have always lived in the West Valley and will continue to call it my home. As a fourth generation Arizonan, I know the challenges facing our state, communities and our families. Home values are down dramatically, unemployment is above nine percent, hardworking folks lack affordable healthcare and our lawmakers continue to cut education funding. As a life-long resident of the West Valley, I have had the honor and privilege to serve my neighbors as a state legislator for the past eight years. During that time, I have sponsored legislation to make our community and state a better place to live, work and raise a family. In 2006, I chaired the successful ballot measure campaign to increase the state minimum wage. I have fought and will continue to fight for human rights, economic development, access to healthcare, a well-funded education system and equal protection for all. Immigration reform is an issue I take seriously and that is why I led efforts for comprehensive immigration reform. I pledge to continue that fight at both the state and national level. During this upcoming legislative session, I will continue to advocate for real solutions to improving our children’s schools. I will work to boost classroom funding, increase pay for teachers, develop a dropout prevention fund and

push for the creation of an Arizona Dream Act program that will allow every student an opportunity to attend a community college and university in Arizona. The future of our state and our communities depends on good schools and good jobs. Our neighborhoods must be safe and secure and offer families an opportunity to live and prosper. Los programas educativos deben tener varios niveles de instrucción para incluir a todos los sectores de estudiantes. Dr. Rivera and his staff have made a great difference in education in Riverside District No.2. “Private education for public schools” is the difference in how student can have better grades at school”, he said. “Each child has to get the best education and the best studying areas at his school no matter where he lives, the resources have to be the same to everyone. That’s the main reason I fight everyday for getting funds to cover all their needs and everything they need to study. It’s today when I have to do my best effort to move over and fight the lack or federal resources we actually have in education”. “I choose working in education because it is my passion and because I know that I can improve the life of each student with new programs”.

n the girls basketball there are 13 girls who made it in. In the practice squad there’s about 4 girls. Their team captains are Trinity Betoney and Bryanna Hernandez. The girls first game is December 5th is at Wilson Middle School. The girls do push-ups, running, shooting drills, and chest passing during practice. They have to eat healthy so they’ll be ready. Now in the boys basketball team there’s no

captain. Each game they’ll have a chance to be captain. Everybody works real hard and works together. What they do to get ready is that they do a lot of running and stretching. Each one of them works and helps each other out. The girls and boys must listen to what their suppose to do and eat healthy, no junk food. The boys and girls hope to see you out at their games!

femenil fue en diciembre 5 en Wilson Middle School donde las jugadoras, brincaron, corrieron, encestaron y realizaron pases. Ellas tienen que comer saludable para estar listas para su próximo encuentro. Por otro lado en el equipo de basquetbol varonil no hay un capitán fijo. Cada juego se le da la oportunidad a un jugador de ser el capitán. Todos los jugadores trabajan muy duro y lo hacen muy bien. Se preparan corriendo y hacienda ejercicios de elasticidad. Cada uno de ellos trabajan y se ayudan unos a otros.

This in Ms. Elliott’s 21st year in education and we congratulate her for her dedication to the knowledge of others. Ms. Elliott has not only been a wonderful principal, she has also been a mentor to her student and staff. Ms. Elliott has also been a police officer. She makes sure when she is a principal that not only her students know what is right and what is wrong but her staff does too. She has inspired people with her many talents. She has taken responsibility and has worked to achieve her goals as a principal. One of the goals Ms. Elliott has achieved was to go to college and get a degree. She hopes many others have had this goal and set out to achieve it. Ms. Elliott’s other goal is to begin travelling. Ms. Elliott worked hard to become the principal. She started as a teacher and has worked her way up to this position. Along with this position comes many responsibilities though. Ms. Elliott says she wears many hats. From being a mother to making sure we get the best education possible in our life, she works hard to make herself known. Ms. Elliott is trying her hardest to make this school be the best. In the next one to two years she is going to try to make this an excelling school. Making sure everyone is at grade level, she begins to get the kids excited with doing their work. Giving challenges for perfect attendance and more make this school fun and thrilling. With these goals she will make this an over-achieving school where everyone will want to go. Ms. Elliott has many ways to be successful. Some of the ways to be successful are to always work as a team, to get the staff along with herself to be committed to teaching the children, and to get the parents committed to working with the school and their children. Some advice Ms. Elliott has given in order to be successful is to always keep your eyes on the prize, don’t let anyone tell you “you can’t or you won’t”, don’t take things personally, and do your best.

In any way, shape, or form, she is hoping to get them involved with the school. Ms. Elliott has an open door policy here at King’s Ridge and she hopes to keep it that way. Where we are going from here is we are going to get to work together and be successful. This school to Ms. Elliott and many others is a place to get an education but enjoy it at the same time. We know Kings Ridge is here to stay and it will always be changing many people’s life in the process.

0V(OOLRWW Nuestra escuela ha vivido momentos muy significativos con Ms Elliott. Ella ha sido la inspiración de muchos que llegan y de muchos que se van. Este año Ms. Elliott cumple 21 años dedicada a la educación y queremos felicitarla por su dedicación hacia el conocimiento de otros. Ms Elliott no solo ha sido una directora increíble, también ha sido una mentora para sus estudiantes y equipo de trabajo. Ma. Elliott fue oficial de policía, pero también se asegura que como directora no solo sus alumnos y personal sepan lo que está bien hecho o mal. Ella ha inspirado a muchos con sus grandes talentos y ha tomado la responsabilidad de cumplir sus metas como directora. Uno de las metas que Ms. Elliott cumplió fue terminar la Universidad y obtener un grado. Ella espera que muchos otros también cumplan este reto y para ella su otro reto es viajar.

Trabajó muy duro Ms. Elliott trabajó muy fuerte para ser directora. Empezó como maestra hasta llegar a su posición actual, llena de responsabilidades a lo cual comenta que se pone muchos sobreros, empezando con el de ser mamá, hasta el de asegurarse que todos nosotros tengamos la mejor educación posible en nuestra vida.

Llegar al éxito Ms. Elliott tiene muchas formas de llegar al éxito, entre ellas, el trabajo en equipo, siempre junto a ella para cumplir con el compromiso de enseñar a los niños, y lograr que los padres de familia se comprometan a trabajar con ella en la escuela. Un consejo que nos dio Ms. Elliott para que seamos personas de éxito fue de que tenemos que mantener nuestros ojos en el “premio” que podemos conseguir en la vida y no permitir que nadie nos diga que “no podemos”, y que no debemos tomar las cosas de forma personal, además de que siempre hay que hacer lo mejor que podamos las cosas. El mayor compromise que tiene Ms. Elliott con nuestra escuela es involucrar a los padres de familia, para que sean parte activa de la escuela por medio de su política de puertas abiertas en King’s Ridge lo cual espera siempre mantenerla así. Es un punto de partida lo que hagamos y trabajemos juntos de hoy en adelante para ser personas de éxito por eso nuestra escuela para Ms. Elliott y para muchos otros estamos en el lugar donde obtenemos educación, pero también es el lugar en donde somos felices. Sabemos que Kings Ridge esta aquí y que se quedará siempre porque hasta ahora ha cambiado a mucha gente para bien.

Kings Ridge Prep Academy is installing solar panels in the parking lot as well as plug-ins for hybrid cars. Ms. Elliott said, “Were going green!” She also said it saves money for the district because solar panels give extra energy. Our principal explained that the extra energy they get they can sell back to Solar City, the company that is installing the solar panels, or use it but they are not done yet. “There are two kinds of energy solar panels that can get to make energy”, she said. One of them is ‘Photovoltaic energy’, when the solar panel takes the light from the sun and produces energy, and ‘Thermal energy’ that is when the solar panel gets heat from the sun and produces energy from it, an easier way to get energy.

Riverside Traditional School, sus profesoras, empleados, padres de familia y los miembros de la comuniad, trabajamos juntos para mejorar la vida de la niñez y para que nuestros estudiantes sigan adelante con sus estudios y realicen sus metas en la vida. At Riverside Traditional School, teachers, staff, parents and community members, work to enhance the life of children. Together we work on student enrollment and achievement. Enrollment has increased from 150 students in 2009 to 441 and counting. Student achievement in Reading has increased from 65%to 81% and math scores are improving. With the programs such as The American Dream Academy in partnership with ASU and the Kith and Kin Program in partnership with First Things First, parental involvement is on the rise. If we could grant holiday wishes to the world, we would get families together under a safe roof. We could ask persons with no families to join our families, and then we would have a new family member. This way there would be more people with a place to sleep. We would give hope by giving warm cozy blankets to prevent people without a home from

getting sick during the winter. Another holiday wish that we have is for people to have jobs, food, shoes, and homes because some people have lost their homes. Together we could build new homes for them, because it is important that people have shelter. We would help them with food for the holidays too. y ESL Parents at night, they feel that having someone be patient with them means all the difference to them. I think I best demonstrate this concept again by reiterating the SEI Model, “I do,” “You do,” and “We all do.” In this way, I, the instructor, model the words or sentences to be read. Whether I am utilizing open vowels or closed vowels, I model for my parents and they have seemed to really gravitate toward this model. Then, I ask them to model the words and sentences to their group partners. Next, we model the words together and this really takes the pressure off the students. I

think when you ask a student to read it out loud before they have practiced the target concept in the Second Language it can be difficult for the student. I do use the latter strategy, but only after the parents have practiced the words and sentences with their group partners and me. Stephen Krashen, researcher for Second Language Acquisition, states that “Students learn best when their affective-filter is lowered.” I have utilized this Language Model and the SEI Model to assist my students and Parents in learning English everyday.

SEI has always traditionally been a good guideline for best teaching practices. Taking into consideration that students learn best when their anxiety is lowered. This concept is what I think most of my students have been benefiting from in class. I teach Second Grade during the day and a Parent ESL Class in the evening. During the day, my Second Grade students feel that when I differentiate instruction they will feel more at ease at acquiring English. For example, bringing my students to the Teaching Station with me allows them to really follow the model of “I do,” “You do” and “We all do.” This model has really helped my Second Grade ESL students understand the routine of how the English Language can be taught everyday in easy steps. Another great benefit for my students as well as for me is that when we are following the SEI Language Model, I can see what my ESL students are doing with their mouths as I pronounce words for them. Then, they are able to see how I pronounce words up close, concentrating on the vowels and consonant sounds. I always give them a smile and praise them for pronouncing the words correctly. I also like to have my ESL students create pictures to their writing. This strategy helps them visualize actions, but in their Second Language. Here is what some of my ESL students have said to me about my class: Cristina Irazoqui said: “I like Ms. Beasley’s class because I am learning a lot about English Grammar, which is the way we use language. Ms. Beasley gives a writing web to organize our ideas, she corrects our grammar and then we write it over in our journals and then we can draw and color our pictures. It is fun, and it helps us understand our writing better. I also enjoy the fact that Ms. Beasley is teaching me everything I need to know to be ready for Third Grade, Math and Reading skills.” Nadifo Abdi said: “I am learning a lot of math and reading in Ms. Beasley’s class

Currently both schools are off setting around 30% of the energy consumption costs thanks to roof mounted solar panels. Besides saving money, utilizing solar energy to produce energy to cool and light our schools reduces the impact in our environment caused by man-made energy generation practices. Our goal in the near future is to be able to acquire from the sun and from our solar panels close to 80% of the energy required to run our schools. Solar City and Riverside believe this will set a great example on how we can take care of the earth and our natural resources while teaching our young generations the importance of being sustainable and green.

Riverside Elementary School District #2 continues to prove that students always come first during their planning and allocation of funds for the total make-over at Riverside Traditional Campus. Their newly remodeled library is just one more example how they are turning one of the oldest schools in the State of Arizona into a state of the art school campus. The current administration admits that amongst their biggest challenges during the development of this project was to meet the allocated budget. Project architect Mr. David Hunt and project manager Gustavo Valenzuela along with an experienced and knowledgeable procurement department led by Rosa Saenz and Jose Moreno worked together to meet the project’s challenges by strategically recommending specific techniques to meet the established budget. Their efforts during the bidding process paired with a well-planned and executed construction process which was professionally handled by Robert Watley and Brad Walker from DL Withers construction allowed for successful completion of a project which exceeded the district’s expectations. A true team effort made this project a complete success for the students and for the entire Riverside’s surrounding community. It comes as no surprise to hear R2 students stating that their library is awesome and that they consider it as one of their favorite spaces in campus. “Me gusta mucho venir aqui a leer libros” or “ I love to come here to read” is exactly what the administration wanted students to say and exactly what they had in mind while planning this state of the art modern reading center. Su biblioteca recién remodelada es sólo un ejemplo de cómo se está convirtiendo una de las escuelas más antiguas del estado de Arizona en un campus escolar de primer nivel. La actual administración reconoce que entre sus mayores retos durante el desarrollo de este proyecto fue cumplir con el presupuesto asignado. El arquitecto del proyecto, el Sr. David Hunt, y el director del proyecto, Gustavo Valenzuela, junto con un departamento de adquisiciones con experiencia y conocimiento, dirigido por Rosa Sáenz y José Moreno, trabajaron en conjunto para enfrentar los desafíos del proyecto de forma estratégica y recomendar técnicas específicas para cumplir con el

presupuesto establecido. Sus esfuerzos durante el proceso de licitación junto con un proceso de construcción bien planeado y ejecutado, manejado profesionalmente por Robert Watley y Brad Walker de DL Withers Construction, permitió la finalización exitosa de un proyecto que superó las expectativas del distrito. Un verdadero esfuerzo de equipo hizo de este proyecto todo un éxito para los estudiantes y para la comunidad que rodea el Distrito Riverside entero. No sorprende escuchar a los estudiantes R2 cuando afirman que su biblioteca es impresionante y que lo consideran como uno de sus espacios favoritos en el campus. “Me encanta venir aquí para leer” es lo que la Administración quiere que los estudiantes digan y es exactamente lo que tenían en mente cuando planearon este “state of the art” moderno centro de lectura. Los padres están invitados a venir al centro de lectura y leer con sus hijos. Hay muchos títulos interesantes para elegir, y los espacios con iluminación natural y salas de ambiente relajado realmente mejoran la experiencia de la lectura. Each morning that we arrive at school, we see construction workers hard at work making a big hole outside of the school. It is cool seeing the heavy machinery in action. The construction workers are working together to put in a new driveway that will make our school much safer. We think that they may also be building a bike ramp for students. It is clear that this is a dirty job, however we really think the workers are awesome and very responsible. We all think they are doing a great job on the construction. Cyber Bullying occurs mostly by teenagers. They think it’s funny to know that the person who received something threatening and that they cried. In fact, it can do harm by making them depressed, sad, angry, and frustrated. All these feelings can hurt the victim in ways that cannot be explained. They can get traumatized, sent to help, or even make them cause death. One way that cyber bullying can happen is by posting hurtful or threatening messages online. For example, on Facebook you can post up your daily status. However, to some other people, they might take it as a way to say something about someone else and let the whole world know about it. No one cares if they hurt the person that they are hurting but that is enough to make a small change in someone’s life. The threat is read by everyone with no way to take it back as soon as everyone knows. Some other ways cyber bullying can happen is by sending mean messages through text or online. This is the most occurring these days. Many teenagers think it’s funny to send a hurtful online message or text they know will hurt their victim. 57% of teens are culprits of cyber bullying this year. Most victims do not tell an adult because then they would think it’s “snitching”. Many mean messages say insulting, life threatening, and disturbing words that may cause victims to destroy or end their life. Another way of cyber bullying is by hacking into accounts and sending offensive messages throughout the

Teenagers ask others to give them their password to post up something on their page, but they actually use the persons account to communicate with others in a sense of pronominal ways. The teenagers these days have a lot of drama in their life and the internet is part of it. A final way of cyber bullying is to have a double identity in the internet or message for a bully to hurt others. They send messages to other people going by another person that is probably innocent and wants to make him or her guilty of something they did not do. All these cyber bullying issues occur with no teenager or kid knowing. Sometimes they confront them but most of them commit suicide. These days’ texting and internet messaging have become monitored tighter by internet creators for dangerous and serious cyber bullying.

biendo mensajes de amenaza en línea por ejemplo en Facebook, donde se puede poner lo que haces diariamente y que para uno puede ser una forma de informar a quien te conoce como estás. Pero hay otros a los que no les importa dañar a otra persona y lo hacen para mal, sin saber que “esto” es suficiente para cambiar la vida de otros en segundos porque la amenaza o la mala información es leída por todo mundo y no hay forma de que sea retroactiva. El 57% de los adolescentes han sido culpables del acoso cibernético este año y la mayoría de las vîctimas no denuncia esto a algún adulto cercano porque creen que pueden ser considerados mentirosos. Sabemos que muchos de los mensajes enviados son insultantes, amenazan la vida de otros y utilizan palabras indignantes que pueden causar que las victimas destruyan su vida. Otra forma de realizar acoso cibernético es entrando a las cuentas de otros para enviar mensajes ofensivos en la red de l as escuelas en donde el 90% de las cuantas el línea son penetradas con mensajes ofensivos que sirven para

intimidar a otros. Algunos adolescente les piden a otros chicos su “password” clave de entrada, para poner algún material escolar en su página, pero por lo general la utilizan para comunicarse con otros en forma insultante. Y para terminar también se practica la intimidación cibernética manteninedo una doble personalidad en el internet en donde con una doble identidad se envían mensajes que acosan a y lastiman a otros, como si fueran otra persona, pera hacerlas parezca culpables de este crimen. Todo lo concerniente a intimidación ocurre sin que muchos jóvenes se den cuentade que esta sucediendo pero cierto es que algunas veces los lleva a confrontar el problema pero otras no. Hoy en día textear o el envío de mensajes en internet puede ser monitoreado por los creadores de estos sistemas y evitar que las personas que se dedican a la intimidación cibernética sigan adelante. Muchos adolescentes viven muchos conflictos en su vida y el internet es parte de esto.
