MUSTINKA RIVER WATERSHED RESTORATION AND PROTECTION PLAN: DATA INVENTORY 1

Water Quantity

Multiple flow monitoring sites are spread throughout the watershed. The USGS flow monitoring site has data from several months during 2007. Data at the remaining sites are primarily stage data, with some discrete flow measurements. Stage-discharge rating curves have been developed for a portion of the sites. Approximately three sites were selected to be used in the HSPF model calibration; site selection was based on the existence of a rating curve, location, and number of data points. The calibrated HSPF model will provide estimated flow at the pour point of each HUC 12 watershed; this modeled flow will be used for the load duration curve analysis and TMDL calculations.

Water quality

The parameters of interest for the data inventory were those directly related to the potential stressors to the biota, selected from the Red River Valley Biotic Impairment Assessment 1 , which identified a set of stressors as likely leading to biotic impairments in the Red River Valley. The following are the potential stressors and the water quality parameters that are the focus of this data inventory (Table 1). Table 1. Potential stressors and water quality parameters Potential Stressor Water Quality Parameter Instream sediment from field and gully erosion Turbidity, TSS Intermittent stream flow * Channelization * Pesticides Pesticides Low dissolved oxygen Dissolved oxygen High temperature Temperature Fish passage blockage * * These potential stressors cannot be evaluated with water quality data.

Water quality data have been collected at multiple sites in the watershed over the last several decades. The database used for this project consists of all data in the watershed from the MPCA’s EQuIS database, as of June 2011. The following water quality data inventory focuses on data from the last ten years (2001-2010). The sources of data from the MPCA EQuIS database are summarized in Table 2. This includes data from the MPCA’s 2010 Intensive Watershed Monitoring. The number of sampling dates and years of water quality data for temperature, dissolved oxygen, TSS, and turbidity at each monitoring site are summarized in Table 3. The grey shading identifies high-frequency monitoring sites, identified in the following paragraph.

Mustinka River Watershed Restoration and Protection Plan – Data Inventory, 9-1-2011

Overall, 18 sites in the Mustinka River watershed have been monitored for more than four months during the year, hereafter defined as high-frequency monitoring: ten sites along the Mustinka River, one site along Five Mile Creek, three sites along Twelve Mile Creek, and one site along Eighteen Mile Creek. Three additional sites have been monitored in the upper watershed of Five and Twelve Mile Creeks. The distribution of the high-frequency monitoring sites within the Mustinka River Watershed is illustrated in Figure 1 and listed in Table 4 in order of upstream to downstream location along a given river segment. The most highly monitored site within the Mustinka River watershed is along the Mustinka River at USH-75 in Wheaton (S000-062). This site was monitored intensively during the Upper Red River TMDL (2001-2003), Red River Basin Condition Monitoring Network (2003-2007), and the Major Watershed Pollutant Load Monitoring Network (2008-2009). Data from this site may be the best indicators of long-term changes within the Mustinka River watershed. Temperature, dissolved oxygen, turbidity and TSS were monitored during spring snowmelt in March and April at 19 monitoring sites within the Mustinka River Watershed. Mean, minimum, maximum, and the number of sample dates for each monitoring site are summarized in Table 5 The following water quality data are or will be available, but are not part of the MPCA’s EQuIS database: • Water samples to be analyzed for pesticides were collected at five sites on August 16, 2011. Samples are being evaluated by the MN Department of Agriculture for a pesticide screening. • Water quality data collected by MPCA staff at the biological monitoring sites during the 2010 Intensive Watershed Monitoring.

Biology

Biology data from the Mustinka River watershed were provided by MPCA in June 2011. The majority of the data are from 2010 monitoring associated with the MPCA’s Intensive Watershed Monitoring, but data are also available from 1994, 2005, and 2006. Approximately 37 sites in the Mustinka River watershed were evaluated in 2010.

4

Habitat

MPCA staff completed a Minnesota Stream Habitat Assessment at each 2010 biological monitoring site. The assessment is qualitative and includes measures of watershed land use, riparian quality, bank erosion, substrate type and quality, instream cover, and several characteristics of channel morphology.
