Professor Francis Pott Chair of Composition and Head of Research London College of Music london college of music
Beginning his musical career as a chorister at New College, Oxford, Francis Pott later held Open Music Scholarships at Winchester College and Magdalene College, Cambridge, studying composition under Robin Holloway and Hugh Wood. Recipient of four national awards for composition, in 1997 he also gained first prize in the solo piano section of the Prokofiev International Composing Competition, Moscow. From 1991 to 2001 he was John Bennett Lecturer in Music at St Hilda’s College, Oxford, and also a bass lay clerk in the Choir of Winchester Cathedral under the direction of Dr David Hill.

In 2001 he took up the post of Head of Music at LCM, later becoming its Head of Composition and also Head of Research Development across the whole Faculty of Arts. In February 2007 the University appointed him to its first ever Chair of Composition. Francis Pott’s works have been performed and broadcast in almost forty countries worldwide and in the Vatican, published by four major
houses in the UK and widely recorded for world release on commercial CD. In both 2006 and 2011 he was a nominated finalist in the Choral section of the Annual Composer Awards organised by BASCA [British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors] in conjunction with the BBC. In 2012 he was winner of the international composing competition of the Cheltenham Festival.

This course is for students who have practical expertise in acting and wish to develop further skills to enable entry to the professional world of performance. The acting methods studied are focused in Western and Eastern Europe and will concentrate on the demands on the voice working within the ‘live’ performance space. Course overview
This course offers a unique, exciting, demanding and disciplined practical training in acting incorporating the many facets of vocal management. The important work of Feldenkrais supports both the physical and vocal (sung and spoken) development of our actors. You will also be encouraged to develop skills as an inspired self-reflective practitioner, which will enhance your ability to deal with all styles of theatrical performance and possible areas of research in your final year of study or, if appropriate, following graduation. The history of theatre will inform your practical studies in voice, movement and acting to give both integrity and truth to your performance work. This will lead you into making informed decisions within the rehearsal room with regard to performance work undertaken. In addition to your required studies, you will be given an intensive view of the actor’s workplace and a thorough grounding in ‘performance’ business acumen, and will be expected to perform in at least three full-scale professional productions in addition to a showcase. You will work with current practitioners from the West End and all performances will be in professional venues.

This course encourages an intellectual and practice-based interrogation of musical theatre in addition to giving the actor/singer a respect for the various demands of both written text and the musical score.
This course is intended for those students who have a practical expertise in performance and wish to develop these skills in actor-singer training further to enable entry to the professional world of performance. The individual exploration of ‘sense over sound’ is a notable and distinctive feature of this course. The important work of Feldenkrais supports both the physical and vocal (sung and spoken) development of our actor-singers. In addition to the acquisition of a strong performance discipline, the course seeks to develop each student as an inspired self-thinking practitioner with the ability to devise and perform original musical theatre works – much of this pioneering work will be completed in conjunction with Mercury Musicals. Uniquely, this course is placed within the music conservatoire sector and provides individual singing tuition at all levels of the work, while engaging in the disciplines of acting, actor movement, voice, stage combat and dance. The BA (Hons) Live Sound Production course is designed to offer undergraduate students an opportunity to gain knowledge and experience of the key elements in live sound and events. Practical live sound-engineering, system design, recording techniques, acoustics and event management form the key components of the course.
Course overview
This course builds upon the existing music technology provision, building on the unique opportunities for live production on offer at the London College of Music (LCM). There are a number of specialist performance courses including pop performance, performance and musical theatre which require full event support. The Live Sound Production course focuses on the key elements required to support events from smaller productions through to large-scale events and festivals, looking in detail at the technical, practical and legal and management aspects of running a live event. Students studying the course are provided with underlying skills in recording and mixing to support their live engineering, and allows students to diversify into studio based recording and production. MMus Performance (work-based learning) This course is designed for students working primarily as instrumentalists, composers or conductors. Attendance for lectures is as limited as possible, with the remaining tuition delivered by one-to-one contact time through the tutorial system and via the e-learning platform.
The course aims to equip students with a breadth of skills and information enabling them to develop their careers within today’s music industry. Provision is made for students’ professional work to form part of the assessment process, particularly with regard to practical components of the course. The course is structured around the needs of the professional performing musician. Central to this is the further development of advanced, technically assured and artistically informed performance skills. These are supplemented by more narrowly defined skills, which relate to and arise directly from each chosen area of specialist work.

Applicants must have the following: • A recognised first degree in Music or first or higher degree in other subjects with relevant musical experience to the required level (diploma level or director of music exams). • Necessary prior experience to meet the demands of the course.

MMus Composition (Concert Music/Film and Television) The course is designed for advanced composers and provides an in-depth, specialist training.
Course overview
This course consists of six modules, all of which must be passed in order to obtain the MMus award. A contextual knowledge of mainstream repertoire and significant previous experience of orchestration is required. This course is not suitable for guitar-based singer-songwriters, for composers with no previous orchestral experience or for those whose primary experience is not notation-based. Students on the Film and Television course will be able to cultivate their particular skills, developing the flexibility to operate effectively and professionally within this field. Previous graduates have gone on to be highly successful and respected composers within their chosen field, including Leigh Phillips who was awarded a prestigious commission to make a reconstruction of the missing score of Gerard Schurmann’s score for the David Lean ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ film, and Laura Rossi, who (among various other notable successes) scored the Imperial War Museum’s 1916 film ‘The Battle of the Somme’, which has been released on CD and DVD to worldwide critical acclaim.
