BRIEF HISTORY A.

INTRODUCTION

This is an institution established by the Catholic Diocese of Warri for promoting the formation of Christ’s faithful in the correct practice of liturgical music in the Diocese and beyond; to provide musical studies according to the spirit of Catholic Education so as to promote full, conscious, and active participation in the Sacred Liturgy as well as the sanctification of daily life and work. B.

ESTABLISHMENT

His Lordship, Most Rev. Richard Burke, SPS, verbally established the institution on the 29th of October 2006, during His pastoral visit/Confirmation to St. Jude Catholic Church, G.R.A. Effurun. The circular authorizing this institution was issued by His Grace, Most Rev. Richard Burke, SPS, on the 18th of February, 2008. This letter was addressed to all Priests, Religious and Faithful of Warri Diocese. C.

LOCATION

For a takeoff, St. Jude Catholic Church, G.R.A. graciously made provisions for accommodation facilities and some musical instruments worth hundred thousands of Naira; thanks to the inspiration and generosity of Rev. Fr. Augustine Eruotor and his Parishioners. It then moved to Holy Martyrs of Uganda Minor Seminary, Enerhen Road, Effurun, Delta State, Nigeria, in 2009 where it currently uses as its temporary site. The permanent site of Music Academy, Catholic Diocese of Warri, is now what was formerly known as St. Joseph College, Ozoro, D.

MISSION STATEMENT

Committed to restoring Order, Dignity and Decorum to Sacred Music in the Catholic Liturgy in particular and music in general. 2.

FORMATION- PROGRAMME FOR TWO YEAR DIPLOMA IN SACRED MUSIC

PHILOSOPHY The art which makes Sacred Liturgy (the public worship of the Mystical Body of Christ) so alive is good liturgical music. Just as in any other art, there are fundamental underlying, general principles of music which ought to be followed generally, and, in particular, in its application to Church music. The fact is: good liturgical music is lacking in most parishes in Warri diocese and beyond. Therefore, the Music Commission in the Diocese of Warri realized the need for a programme of musical studies that should be directed at persons in the ministry of the choir. Since good liturgical music depends upon good, trained choir (that leads the congregation in singing), this formation-programme is intended to equip the chorister/choir in the exercise of its sacred ministry. In addition, for ecumenical purposes, the programme is also open to Christians or individuals who want to excel in any aspect of music done in this programme. AIMS: The objectives of this institution are as follows:i.

To improve the quality, holiness, and the sense of worship in the skill and practice of Sacred music in the Catholic Church, Warri Diocese and beyond by teaching some of the disciplines of liturgical music in terms of practical, theoretical and historical knowledge according to the directives of the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music, Rome.

3

ii.

To lay a solid foundation for further studies on music to students through theoretical and practical lessons.

iii.

To work in collaboration with the Liturgy and Music Commissions of the diocese for the furtherance of their aims as it pertains to Music.

iv.

To form Students into real Catholic Liturgical Musicians
