WHAT WOULD I DO?

AS A LIVING MEMORIAL, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is dedicated to remembering the victims, honoring the survivors, and ensuring that their history remains both a cautionary tale and a vital lesson to future generations. It is a lesson about evil, about the failure of nations and institutions, about the consequences of indifference, about the choices of individuals—in short, it is a lesson about responsibility. What you do matters.

A POWERFUL PLACE A crossroads of politics and culture, history and style, Washington, DC delights and inspires like no other destination. Fashioned after Paris by city designer Pierre Charles L’Enfant, the capital city grew up along the banks of the Potomac River, in a location chosen by George Washington. The city’s most famous landmarks are clustered on and around the National Mall and Memorial Parks, stretching from the Lincoln Memorial to the U.S. Capitol. Flanked by dozens of museums and memorials, this grassy space plays host to festivals, protests, gatherings and performances. On summer evenings, the Mall is a terrific place to catch an open air concert, movie screening or jazz performance. In the winter, visitors head to the Mall to glide on the National Gallery of Art’s skating rink. DC’s inspiring memorials and powerful landmarks are complemented by a fascinating collection of hip and historic neighborhoods that delight visitors with walking tours, trendy restaurants, sidewalk cafes and quaint boutiques. Self-guided heritage trails relate the history of some of DC’s most fascinating neighborhoods, from Southwest to U Street. As you explore DC, we invite you to plug in to the power of a city that makes history every day. It’s here where you can see the original Declaration of Independence, sit in on a Supreme Court hearing or catch a jazz set in Duke Ellington’s boyhood neighborhood. In DC, powerful moments are yours to discover. ★ WASHINGTON.ORG

From Abraham Lincoln’s tide-turning elections and inaugurations to Martin Luther King’s soul-stirring “I Have a Dream” speech at the Lincoln Memorial, Washington, DC has served as a powerful backdrop for catalyzing moments in the Civil War and civil rights movement. To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the war and to explore DC’s unique role in the civil rights movement, cultural attractions, historic landmarks, cultural organizations and historic sites throughout the capital region have joined together for a four-year program, Civil War to Civil Rights, running 2011-2015. The four-year Civil War to Civil Rights commemoration will also encapsulate the opening of major new attractions, including the African-American Civil War Memorial and Museum (grand opening July 16-18, 2011), the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial (dedicated August 28, 2011), Ford’s Theatre Center for Education and Leadership (February 2012), and the Smithsonian National Museum of African-Ameri-

can History and Culture (opening in 2015). The four-year commemoration coincides with events taking place across the nation to mark the Civil War sesquicentennial. As the capital of the Union, DC was heavily protected and frequently targeted by the competing forces. Many of the war’s most significant battles took place within a short drive of the White House, including First & Second Manassas (Bull Run), Antietam and Gettysburg. DC visitors can step through buildings that hosted key players and witnessed pivotal events, such as the Willard Hotel, where Lincoln stayed prior to his inauguration, the National Portrait Gallery and Smithsonian American Art Museum, where Lincoln’s second inaugural ball took place, and Arlington National Cemetery, located on land formerly owned by the Lee family. You can catch a show at Ford’s Theatre, just as Lincoln did on the night of his assassination, or visit the Navy Yard, where the assassination conspirators were held.

CIVIL RIGHTS STAND IN THE SHADOW OF A CIVIL RIGHTS LEGEND The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial is the first on the National Mall to honor a non-president. Located on the Tidal Basin, the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial creates a visual “line of leadership” between the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials. The memorial has been designed to be an engaging landscape experience conveying four fundamental and recurring themes throughout Dr. King’s life – democracy, justice, hope, and love – and features the use of natural elements including water, stone, and trees. A 450-foot inscription wall will feature more than a dozen Dr. King quotes engraved into granite to serve as a lasting testament and reminder of Dr. King’s humanitarian vision. The memorial invites the public to travel beyond the “Mountain of Despair” to the “Stone of Hope,” which will feature a 30-foot sculpture of Dr. King. A four-day long festival of events, celebratory and contemplative, will accompany the opening festivities. The formal dedication will take place on the 48th anniversary of the day King delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, a short walk from the Tidal Basin acreage. The dedication is scheduled to take place at 11 a.m. on Sunday, August 28, 2011 with musical tributes before and after the ceremony. Seats for the ceremony have been distributed by lottery. Standing room areas will be available to the public eager to witness history.

Many special events and exhibitions coincide with the sesquicentennial. The National Air and Space Museum explores the use of hot air balloons in surveillance, while the International Spy Museum delves into the world of Civil War spies. Regularly scheduled tours trace the events that transpired on the night of Lincoln’s assassination on foot and on Segway. During the war years, DC took a leading role in the quest for equality, setting the stage for the dynamic part it would play in the civil rights movement. Slaves were freed in the District nearly a year before they were freed nationwide and many landmark decisions were handed down from the Supreme Court. Decades after King’s historic March on Washington, civil rights demonstrations are still regularly staged on the National Mall, advocating for veterans’ and immigrants’ rights, same-sex marriage equality and other topical issues. You can visit civil rights landmarks such as the Greensboro lunch counter (on view at the

National Museum of American History) and Howard University, where President Lyndon Johnson outlined his plans for civil rights legislation. Destination DC has launched a dedicated web channel, Washington.org/CWCR. The site features searchable directories of Civil War and civil rights sights—from statues, circles and squares honoring Civil War heroes to parks dedicated to the memory of civil rights advocates—plus listings of commemorative events. The site also includes itineraries designed to help travelers experience the history-making locations and insider tips from knowledgeable experts and local notables. Travelers can also explore Cultural Tourism DC’s self-guided Civil War to Civil Rights walking trail, highlighting significant landmarks and locations in downtown DC. You can also download the tour on a podcast. ★

The newest memorial on the National Mall is scheduled to be dedicated Aug. 28, 2011 – on the 48th anniversary of King’s “Dream” speech. Make your travel plans on Washington. org/MLK to be part of history.

DC is serviced by three airports (DCA, IAD & BWI) plus Amtrak and regional rail service. It’s laid out in a grid pattern, with numbered streets running north-south, lettered streets running east-west and avenues named for states running diagonally, coming together at traffic circles and squares. You won’t find an X, Y or Z Street—or even a J Street. As you travel further out from the city center, lettered streets become twosyllable names, then three-syllable names. Addresses are marked by the quadrants that divide the city (Northwest, Southwest, Northeast and Southeast) and come together beneath the Capitol dome. DC is known for its pedestrianfriendly streets and Metro, its world-class public transportation system. To complement Metro, the DC Circulator is a sleek and stylish bus service that offers easy access to neighborhoods like Georgetown, Adams Morgan and Capitol Hill.

WHEN TO VISIT DC buzzes with events and activities year round. Hotel rates are generally lowest on weekends and during the summer and winter. Museums and attractions are quieter during the winter but stay busy throughout the summer with vacationers. Visit Washington.org for tips on exploring DC season by season.

WHERE TO STAY You can’t beat the experience of staying in the heart of the city, within footsteps of famous landmarks, award-winning restaurants, shops and nightlife. If you choose to stay in the suburbs, be sure to look for a property with Metro access. Browse listings on pages 77-90 of this guide.

International Culture in Washington, DC

Washington, DC is an international capital and home to the State Department, and over 160 embassies and consulates – keep an eye out for limos with diplomatic plates. The District is frequently home to major international summits and conventions, but not all international relations take place behind closed doors. And it’s certainly not all suit-and-tie serious. Washington, DC offers countless opportunities to intersect with world-class international culture: the best of the best of festivals, theatre, concerts, exhibitions and of course restaurants. The National Geographic Society was established in DC in 1888, and its yellow-edged magazine and international television channel remain symbols of American curiosity about the world,

In 2011, Society’s downtown headquarters welcome several exhibitions that will transport viewers around the world: “Race to the Ends of the Earth” (May 25-Aug. 21) about the exploration of the South Pole, “The Etruscans: An Ancient Italian Civilization” (June 10-Sept. 25) and “Machu Picchu” (June 24-Sept. 11). This fall, the National Museum of Natural History transports visitors across the ocean to North Africa and back in time: “The Eternal Life of Ancient Egypt” (a sneak preview opened in April; exhibition opens Nov. 17). The installation will explore the ways in which mummies, tombs, and Egyptian mythology open new windows into the lives of ancient Egyptians as they navigated through the world

In 2011, Colombia, the Peace Corps at 50, and rhythm and blues music will be explored through storytelling, food, music, dance, and arts and craft workshops. The nation’s performing arts complex also presents a 25th anniversary production of the legendary French musical, “Les Misérables” (Sept. 27- Oct. 30), featuring glorious new staging and scenery. The Shakespeare Theatre hosts “Fela!” (Sept. 13-Oct.9), the Tony Award-winning musical celebration of Nigerian pop star and civil rights advocate Fela Kuti.
