“Seussical Sermons: The Gospel According to Dr. Seuss.” You’ll find all the details in a separate article in this

month’s newsletter – check it out! During my research on the subject, I ran across this little poem, written in Dr. Seuss fashion. It’s a fun way to stand at the edge of summer and think about the months ahead: Seussian Thoughts on the First Day of June

By Francy Bearden Summer seems long, the time stretches ahead School’s out, easy living, and lazing in bed. No sadness, no madness, good books for the reading Just gladness to stretch, a slow life to be leading. The days are unplanned and ambition is dead, Time to think thoughts about nothing instead. But when all the mish-mashy becomes boring, Come to the MUMC and start pouring Your heart and your soul and your love and your labor Into some work that will help out your neighbor. God never takes a vacation from us Or hops on a train or a plane or a bus, and cries out “See ya later, I’m off on a spree, I’m sure that nobody is going to miss me.” So the message is STOP, catch your breath, have some fun, But even while having some fun in the sun, Read the Gospel, sing praises, help others and teach, The good life in summer’s not just at the beach! Summer’s a great time to explore a new way to live out your discipleship. Maybe you’ll have a bit of extra time to give. You might want to stretch yourself and try something you haven’t done before. Or something that’s the opposite of how you earn a living. Maybe devote your summer months to a different way to pray. Tear yourself away from the computer screen and out in nature instead. Leave your cell phone at home on purpose. Give up texting for a day and spend your texting time helping someone. Check out a Sunday School class. Or serve as a volunteer with our Youth Group on Sunday evenings. “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s Not.” (The Lorax) See you on Sunday! Blessings,

Laura

like “fun.” While I do enjoy merriment and frivolity, I’m actually referring to the musical group “fun.” “fun.” is a band that’s been around for awhile, based out of New York, known for songs such as “Some Nights,” “We are Young”, and “Why Am I the One.” One of my favorite “fun.” songs is “Carry On.” This song is a song of encouragement from one friend to another. The chorus says “If you're lost and alone or you're sinking like a stone, carry on; may your past be the sound of your feet upon the ground, carry on.” I’m struck by the phrase about your past being sound on the ground. We all have things in our past. Some things we can embrace; some things we regret. No matter what our past holds, we have to keep moving forward. God encourages us to move on from our past. Micah 7 says God “...will again have compassion upon us...will tread our iniquities under foot...will cast our sins into the depths of the sea.” Maybe the sound of feet on the ground is the sound of God walking with us, treading on our sins, as we walk into the future. What a blessing it is to have God walking with us, encouraging us to “Carry On!”

FREE Document Shred, Electronics Recycling & Book Collection!!! SATURDAY, JULY 25 TH 8:00-11:00 A.M. Spring-cleaning is here! Time to dig through your old junk and clean out that attic! As you do, you may wonder, “What do I do with all these old records and obsolete electronics???” Well it’s excellent timing! Protect your past from identity theft and save our landfills at the same time. We will have a FREE document shred and electronics recycle day this summer on July 25th, in the west parking lot from 8-11 a.m., by the community garden. Beyond the Move Realty sponsors our paper shred. If you need a document to verify that your materials have been shredded, that is available. GO Recycle will responsibly recycle useable parts of the electronics and dispose of the parts that cannot be recycled. While you’re at it, bring a children’s book to donate. Did you know that 2/3 of low income students do not own a book? Reading is Fundamental is a nonprofit organization that supplies new or gently used books to those children. Books appropriate for kids of all ages through high school in English or Spanish are welcome! Please help us spread the word! Tell your neighbors, friends, and groups you belong to. Let’s show the community we are serious about protecting the environment and helping the world become a better place!

Stitches from the Heart Our prayer shawl ministry, Stitches from the Heart, is asking for donations. This is a great way for you to be a member of this ministry even if you are not able to crochet, knit or quilt with us. We do ask that if you plan on donating yarn, our prayer shawls typically use at least three or more skeins/balls of yarn of either the same color or coordinating colors of the same weight/thickness. If you would rather provide funds and let our yarn shoppers pick out the yarn, that would be terrific, too! Thank you so much for helping this ministry get started! Monetary donations can be given to the office and yarn donations can be given to the office or one of our co-chairs, Virginia Hixon and Jenny Rinehart. Our next meeting dates are as follows: June 8th 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. June 22nd 10 a.m. -12 p.m.

How Can You Help with VBS? VBS 2015: August 3-7, 9:00 - Noon Vacation Bible School is a major outreach effort of the whole church. This August we will welcome over 200 children into our church, with most of them coming from the community. In order for VBS to be successful, we need 100% support from our congregation. So, how can you help? • Be a “Faith Guide” group leader. We still need 4 elementary group leaders and 2 preschool leaders in order to reach our goal of welcoming 220 children. Training is provided! • Be a station leader! We still need help in the preschool and elementary art areas and on the playground. • Be a greeter! Come and greet families, register children and check the out at the end of the day. Be available to answer questions about the church as families come and go. • Provide items on our wish list. We’ll continue to update the list with new needs as we get closer to VBS. • Donate scholarship money. We never turn any family away. The cost to attend VBS is $15 per child, but we offer scholarships to those who can’t afford it. You can sponsor a child by donating $15 to VBS. • Be an early playground volunteer! We need about 4 people to greet the early drop-off children on the playground. These volunteers begin at 7:45 and leave at 8:45 AM. It’s a great opportunity for those who want to serve, but have to go to work. • Be a prayer supporter! Our VBS team needs your prayers as we plan and implement this great ministry. If you are interested in helping in any of these ways, please contact Kim Carroll at 512-282-7274 or [email protected].

VBS Wish List: Start saving these items and then bring them to church beginning in June! • Pringles cans, cleaned • Cleaned soup or food cans, no sharp edges • Chipboard or cardboard scraps • Cereal boxes • NEW tissue paper • Fleece scraps (at least 8" x 8") • Tongue depressors • Embroidery floss • Blue painter’s tape and electrical tape (any color) • Poster board and cardstock (misc colors) • Butcher paper (various colors) • Hula hoops (may be slightly bent) • Plastic slinky toys • Coffee cans (not plastic) or oats containers • Clean, clear 20 oz or 1 liter bottles • Toilet paper or paper towel rolls • Hex nuts • Pie tins • Pool noodles

any of you are familiar with the "Coats for Kids" program sponsored each fall by Jack Brown Cleaners and a local news station. The Craft Group has voted for money for this project. We hope that over the summer, with thrifty shopping, to be able to reach our goal of 25 coats. When cleaning closets or getting ready for back to school in the fall, if you have gently used coats that no longer fit your children, boys or girls, any size, (even adult sizes) and would like to donate them to a worthy cause, please bring them to the church office. We will include them with our donations and get them to the appropriate place when the program is announced this fall. Please be sure the mark them "Coats for Kids/Craft Group". Thanks for supporting this worthwhile project!

How Will You “Engage Creation” This Summer? The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines “engage” as to hold the attention of, as well as, to interlock with. This summer, as you and your family go about your daily routines, or as you travel around the city, state, country, or countries, take notice of what holds your attention. Think about how you connect, or interlock with, creation. The Eco-Faith Team and Worship/Fine Arts Team invites you to document in some way how you engage creation this summer. You can take a photograph, paint a picture, compose a song, write a poem, or find another way to express that connection, and share it. Beginning August 23, you can bring your creation and display it onone of our “Outdoor Journey” walls in the sanctuary or FLC. We’ll leave the display up through the month of September so we can see the many various ways our church family engages creation. Perhaps if we see the various aspects of creation, we may grow more appreciative of creation, and maybe, just maybe, help to take better care of God’s creation.

New Church Directories are HERE! At the time of this writing the new directories are scheduled to ship on May 26th, and are expected to arrive by the beginning of June. So, if you had your picture taken and you don’t have your directory yet, call or stop by the church office. Again, I want to thank all the people who helped make our updated directory possible, especially Sandy Wolff and Claire Whisenhunt! It was a LOT of work! Enjoy!

“Seussical Sermons: The Gospel According to Dr. Seuss” Interested in a fun and different way to look at the Gospel? We hope you’ll join us for a five-week series of sermons that use “Seussical” stories to shine a light on the teachings of Jesus. You may have read Dr. Seuss books as a child – or those delightful stories may have been part of the bedtime ritual for your children and grandchildren. Those wonderful “Seussical” books use made-up words, enchanting art, and hilarious rhythms to capture our imaginations and, at the same time, address ticklish issues we often face. Not unlike the parables of Jesus that delight us when we are young, the timeless truths found in Dr. Seuss grow on us until we understand that we are being addressed at the most basic human levels of insight. In other words, Dr. Seuss is not just for children, as his oddball cast of characters speak to the child within all of us. So, here’s the SEUSSICAL SUNDAY MORNING LINEUP: •

“Thank you, Lord, for this season of sun and slow motion, of games and porch sitting, of picnics and light green fireflies on heavy purple evenings; and praise for slight breezes, It’s good, God, as the first long days of your creation.” 1 As I read the beginning of Ted Loder’s prayer, memories of days and nights just like these as a child at my Grandparents’ house in Rockingham, North Carolina, surface. Memories of running through the garden, picking blueberries, gorging on watermelon busted open in the field and laughing as the garden hose washed its juicy guts away. Memories of shelling butter beans and cleaning corn. Memories of watching fireflies just like these. Memories of Scrabble, Chinese Checkers, and Gin Rummy. And never feeling rushed or distracted. Memories that make me wonder when I last felt so relaxed and leisurely…for a whole season. I have the occasional evening or even day like this, but I remember a time when this was how I lived. Of course I was young and had very few responsibilities. No deadlines or to-do lists. No bills. No home or family to attend to. Still…there must be a way to recapture a bit of this slow summer living. The longing it creates in me is for a slow pace and attentiveness to the simple pleasures of God’s creation. A desire for connection, I suppose. A desire to reconnect or more deeply connect with smells and sounds and sights and tastes and sensations…with people…with myself…with God. I think that’s what eludes me most in my hurried and multitask oriented crazybusy life. Deep and meaningful connection. So this summer my prayer for me and for you (in Ted Loder’s words) is that: “Most of all, Lord, let me live easily and grace-fully for a spell, so that I may see other souls deeply, share in a silence unhurried, listen to the sound of sunlight and shadows, explore barefoot the land of forgotten dreams and shy hopes, and find the right words to tell another who I am.” 1 In Christ,

Pastor Tracey 1.
