4 WEEKS UNTIL YOU MOVE! You’ve exchanged contracts, the deal is done and it’s all systems go! You’ll be glad of everything you’ve tackled ahead of time as now you need to start the process of contacting pretty much everyone in your address book, both personal and the utilities. Confirm your moving date and focus on working towards it. Get organised for the big day : Draw out a floorplan of your new home, give each room a different colour and put a sticky label of the same colour on the relevant box or item of furniture.

WHO TO NOTIFY CHECKLIST Insurance Ensure your Buildings Insurance on your new home begins on the day you exchange contracts. Ensure your contents insurer has the date of the move and that your possessions are insured from the moment you move in - you do not want a potential gap in cover. Remember the others: Car insurance, Pet Insurance, Medical, Life etc

Utilities Your Gas, Electric and Water suppliers need to know your move is your move is imminent. On the morning of your move, make sure you take final readings.

Your telephone provider needs to know the date of your move and your new address.

Council Tax

The simplest way to inform your council is usually through their website where you simply enter your personal details, address and move date.

Work

Don’t forget to tell your employer you’ve moved – they can then keep their records up to date and ensure correspondence reaches you such as posted payslips etc. If you’re self employed, remember to inform the tax office directly or through your accountant.

Locksmith

You’ll never know with complete certainty who has held a set of keys to your new home. Arrange a locksmith visit A.S.A.P.

Solicitor

If you’ve used a different conveyancer to your regular law firm, make sure they have your new details.

Broadband and Satellite/Cable TV In the modern world you won’t want to be without your technology. Give plenty of notice to your internet and entertainment providers of your move. It might also be a great time to shop around for an even better deal!

Benefits

Let your local benefits office know of your move or inform them via their website

2 WEEKS TO GO! The time has come to start the packing preparation! And yes there’s yet more people to inform… If you’re taking on the brave challenge of packing yourself, begin with non-essential items - books, ornaments, toys etc. Remember the colour trick? Use the colour co-ordinated floor plan and sticky labels on your boxes to clearly show what room it’s for. Confirm all delivery arrangement with your removal company. Speak to the estate agent and agree a time to collect the keys to your new home.

WHO TO NOTIFY CHECKLIST CONTINUED Financial Companies These are the big ones: banks, credit cards, investments, savings accounts, loans, life assurances, pensions and shares.

Doctor and Dentist Your healthcare services need to hold your new address. If you’re moving out of area, you’ll need to deregister with your current GP/Dental Practice. Remember to register at your new property as soon as possible.

Often overlooked, it takes a minimum of 5 days to set up postal redirection. Do it in plenty of time.

Deliveries

Your everyday essentials such as newspapers or milk delivery should be given your move date and if you intend to continue the service at your new address if appropriate.

Electoral Register

If you don’t update this you won’t be eligible to vote. It is also used by credit reference agencies to confirm identity and not being registered may make it more difficult to get credit. It’s quick and easy to do, just go online.

TV Licence

Don’t end up without a license at your new home! Failure to have a license puts you at risk of prosecution and a fine of up to £1,000. Call 0844 800 6722 or visit www.tvlicensing.co.uk.

Friends and Family

It’s always nice to send a posted card, but why not save money by using email?

Non-essential Organisations

You’re not done yet. There are usually many more organisations you’re connected with. Think about links with charities, loyalty cards, subscriptions, gym membership, mail order and internet companies.

THE BIG NIGHT BEFORE THE BIG DAY! Time is up, but there’s a few things you can still do to make your move even smoother. Pack a bag for the family with a few essential clothes, toiletries, towels, chargers etc. A bit like a night away! The kitchen essentials: box them all together - tea, coffee, milk, mugs, cutlery, and the kettle. Think whether you’re likely to fancy cooking after a long day? If you’re not moving far, bring a couple of take away menus! A toolkit is a must. You may need a screwdriver, screws, hammer, nails, spanner and Allen keys. It’s worth keeping copies of important contact numbers with you at all times such as your solicitor and estate agent. A yellow pages might also come in handy. Charge your mobile phones. Defrost your freezer Put all your valuables and documentation in a safe place.
