Moving Arizona Forward

2014 Annual Report

Message from the President & CEO and Chair of the Board Our geographic expansion was and still is transformational. We’ve had an action-packed year and are holding on to our seats for an even bigger, better ride ahead. The lifeblood of Arizona Forward has always been the diversity of its members coupled with our Issue Committees, which have served as the heart and soul of our historic association for more than four decades. We made recognizable strides in 2014:

Recruiting

Our membership roster now encompasses four major Arizona counties – Pima, Pinal, Maricopa and Coconino – along with a host of cities and towns across the state. We’ve actively engaged five major educational institutions, from University of Phoenix as a long-standing Visionary member to all three of the state’s public universities – University of Arizona, Northern Arizona University and Arizona State University – as well as Maricopa Community Colleges. Companies large and small have also added their voice to the cause.

Advocating

Our public policy agenda has become far more robust as we’ve rolled out statewide. From our trip to Washington D.C. to advocate for the I-11 International Trade Corridor to the release of a white paper on water pricing and our Canalscape project that received a $5 million construction grant, we are influencing quality-of-life decisions in the Grand Canyon State.

Educating

We added two new Issue Committees to our agenda – one on Healthy Communities and another on Healthy Forest Ecosystems.

Connecting Sustaining

We featured a special event – Color Canalscape, to further build awareness and awaken the desert community’s relationship with our canal waterways to create a sense of place and gathering spaces for recreation.

A dynamic internship program added to our capacity and serves to mentor the next generation of environmental stewards.

There’s nothing but potential for Arizona Forward. Let’s keep the momentum building toward regional cooperation and collaboration that transcends old boundaries. Sincerely,

Diane Brossart President & CEO, Arizona Forward

“We’ve made incredible strides in our statewide expansion. Community leaders throughout Arizona are more collaborative than ever about how we can work together to improve our state’s environmental quality and economic prosperity.”

Janice Cervelli 2014 Chair of the Board, Arizona Forward Dean, College of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture, University of Arizona “I’m honored to have served as Arizona Forward’s first Chair of the Board from outside the Valley in our 45th anniversary year. The Sun Corridor connecting Tucson and Phoenix was our initial target market, and we now have a presence in Flagstaff and Northern Arizona, as well. As a result, we are a more influential, impactful organization.”

OUR MISSION, VALUES & FOCUS

BALANCE. ENVIRONMENT. ECONOMY. Arizona Forward brings leaders from across the state together to encourage cooperative efforts to improve the environmental sustainability and economic vitality of the place we call home. Our collective influence will make a difference to ensure healthy communities through smart growth and development, efficient transportation, improved air quality, responsible water management, energy alternatives and meaningful education throughout Arizona. Although we convene thoughtful dialogue on sustainability, we operate more like a “do tank” than a “think tank.”

2014 BOARD OF DIRECTORS visioning for the future Arizona Forward’s Board of Directors met for a half-day retreat, graciously hosted by Arizona Community Foundation. Lively discussions revolved around enhancing our Issue Committees, strengthening our Board and expansion strategies for the future.

Our intent was to provide a document that was helpful in understanding some of the issues that contribute to a long-term, reliable water supply in our state, as this finite resource is critical to the economic vitality and sustainability of every Arizona community.

STEWARDSHIP SUMMIT BUILDING HEALTHY COMMUNITIES THE CONNECTION BETWEEN COMMUNITY DESIGN AND PUBLIC HEALTH

Poor community designs pose health threats. That’s what nationally-acclaimed experts on public health told attendees at Arizona Forward’s Stewardship Summit on Building Healthy Communities. More than a dozen mayors, five legislators and nearly 250 business leaders filled the room to explore ways to improve the built environment to positively affect the health and wellness of Arizona residents. The event also featured more than 25 interactive exhibitors showcasing sustainability initiatives around the Grand Canyon State. UCLA professor and pediatrician Dr. Richard Jackson, PBS host of Designing Healthy Communities, noted that your zip code directly impacts your lifespan. Amy Tomczyk of Blue Zones revealed that 80 percent of how long we live is based on how we live – our lifestyles, habits and culture – while only 20 percent is based on genetics or access to basic healthcare.

Earthfest educators night mentoring environmental Stewards

We rang in a decade of celebrating the herculean efforts of Arizona teachers and their remarkable commitment to educating the next generation of environmental stewards. In fact, throughout the state, more teachers than ever before turned out in the history of the program for Arizona Forward’s 10th Annual EarthFest Educators Night, held at the Desert Botanical Garden in partnership with our official education partner, University of Phoenix. Nearly 50 displays from public/private and non-profit sectors were featured at the free event, which combines entertainment and education for K-12 educators statewide. Teachers also enjoyed complimentary curriculum that meets state standards for education, activities and funding opportunities. Arizona Forward and University of Phoenix were proud to bestow four full-tuition scholarships to deserving K-12 Arizona teachers who have demonstrated a commitment to sustainable practices in their classrooms and promoting environmental awareness in the community.

Rolling out the Green Carpet For Environment Excellence 34TH ANNUAL ENVIRONMENTAL EXCELLENCE AWARDS

Some 100 entries were received in Arizona’s oldest and most prestigious awards competition focusing exclusively on sustainability. The ceremony was held at the Westin Kierland Resort and attended by a prominent audience of legislators, mayors and corporate representatives from around the state. Solana Generating Station won top honors, the coveted President’s Award (Best of Show). Held in partnership with SRP, the program also featured a new statewide category – Governor’s Award for Energy & Technology Innovation – securing a partnership from Arizona’s highest elected official, Governor Jan Brewer. Arizona Forward also made a bold announcement, revealing that on the 35th anniversary of its historic program, all categories will be open to submittals from anywhere throughout Arizona. Arizona Forward and SRP presented 20 first-place Crescordia awards and 24 Awards of Merit.
