Ride for Life Comes to Mount Sinai

n May 13th Mr. Chris Pendergast and his friends from the ALS Ride for Life added a stop on their journey to visit our school campus. Along with members of the Middle School Student Council, the elementary school students lined up along the front sidewalk to cheer on our guests and present donations in excess of three thousand dollars. We thank our students, teachers and you in your effort to find a cure for Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

A Visit From Harvey

The 2016 Jump Rope for Heart event was a huge success! Over 125 students and 30 volunteers participated in a morning filled with twelve activity stations and a live DJ keeping the event energized. Thank you very much to all the volunteers who helped make this event special for the students.

MOUNT SINAI ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Let’s Fly a Kite Contest

Science is exciting and magical! That was the message students at Mt. Sinai Elementary School saw and heard from the demonstrations of various science experiments by the presenter of an assembly on May 3, 2016 called, "The Magic of Science." Gifted by the Parent Teacher Organization, students were amazed and some were called from the audience to assist in experiments of chemistry, physics, and mathematical phenomena. Math Olympaid Club

he fourth grade Math Olympiad Club just completed their final competition. Our team scored at total of 133 points. This group met every Monday morning before school to practice problems, work cooperatively and learn higher level math concepts. Congratulations to all Olympiads. MOUNT SINAI ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Revolutionary War

Ms. Matz's fourth grade students wrote about different aspects of the Revolutionary War as part of the Columbia Writing Program's "Bringing History to Life" unit of information writing. Students wrote about different battles or events such as Lexington and Concord, the Boston Massacre and the Tea Act. The bulletin board is part of their celebration of publishing the writing.

Spring is here!

ourth grade band and orchestra students participated in the Harry Chapin Practice-A-Thon. Each student kept a detailed log of every minute they practiced their musical instrument during the month of March. Friends and family were to make a donation based on the total minutes practiced during the entire month. Together, students raised $794.25 for Long Island Cares, Inc. – the Harry Chapin Food Bank. These students recorded a combined total of 8,319 minutes of practice during the month of March!

n May 29th, exactly 23 days after the eggs were placed in the Elementary school incubator, 92 Bobwhite Quail eggs successfully hatched. The students were delighted to learn that bobwhite are precocial, possessing the immediate ability to see and walk. With our live camera feed, students have had the opportunity to witness them emerge from their eggs, explore the classroom brooder, nap and stretch their growing wings all from their home computers and portable electronic devices. First grader students read a lot of books this year for the annual Be Excited About Reading campaign. In fact, the total was 5,542 in all! This was a tremendous accomplishment and was recognized at B.E.A.R. Night Celebration of Reading with parents on Thursday, May 5th in the Middle School Auditorium. Thanks to the PTO for providing the performer, Rick Charette, who entertained all with songs about reading books.

umba came to Mt. Sinai Elementary School on May 10, 2016 as a gift from the Friends of the Arts. The students learned that dance and exercise can be a fun way to stay healthy and fit. Students in all grades participated in the stretching and movements while the presenter modelled the moves and used music as motivation.

n Tuesday, May 3, 2016, renowned author and activist Kevin Powell brought a message of respect for diversity and inclusiveness to the students at Mt. Sinai Middle School. Powell spoke to the school’s 7th and 8th grade students about embracing diversity, celebrating our differences, and overcoming obstacles in our lives. Additionally, Mr. Powell conducted a small-group workshop. In order to prepare for his visit, The English Department provided students with excerpts from Powell's most recent book, The Education of Kevin Powell: A Boy’s Journey to Manhood (Simon & Schuster, October 2015). According to Mr. Michael Cohen, long-time advisor to Mr. Powell who also attended the event, “the students of Mt. Sinai were the most interactive, insightful, and mature group he has seen Kevin work with.”

Mr. Chris Heil Assistant Principal The grade that purchased the most stars was the winner of an ice cream party, held during that grade’s lunch period. Though it was a very close competition, the fifth grade won with a little over $600 raised! This year’s fundraiser was the most successful one in years, and all those involved greatly appreciate students’ generous efforts.

ALS All Stars! In the beginning of May, in just one week, the Mt. Sinai Middle School raised $1,118 for Ride for Life, a foundation whose goal is to raise money and awareness for ALS, better known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. ALS is a very rare disease that affects and degenerates the nervous system, eventually making it nearly impossible to perform daily tasks. In order to raise money for the cause, the middle school had a friendly competition amongst grades to see who could raise the most money. Paper star cutouts were sold for a dollar during lunch periods, and then displayed in the hallway. Mount Sinai Mirror 8

Science Winners

he winners of last year's (2015) 7th grade Mount Sinai Science Fair presented their projects to a field of judges at this year's 2016 Long Island Science Congress held on April 12th at St. Anthony's High School. There were fifteen 8th grade Mount Sinai students who presented their individual or partner projects at this year’s science congress. The two students pictured above (Jake Ritchie and Brandon Rode) took home "honors" trophies for their project on "Whether temperature effects how high a tennis ball bounces", and were recognized at the awards ceremony held at the Wheatley School on May 16th, 2016. Two other students received green "Achievement" ribbons ( Ashley Cromer and Jackie Black). Four students received Red “Meritorius” ribbons (Arielle Mule and Erin Mehl, Sarah Gunasekera and Tara McCall) and 7 students received white “Honorable Mention" ribbons (Tristan Werner and Justin Rinck, Julia Desiano and Isabel Cubillo, Taylor Hutchinson and Jennifer Cariola, and Christian Tabacco. Great Job scientists!

We All Scream for Ice Cream! On Friday, May 6, 2016, the middle school Student Council hosted their annual 5th and 6th Grade Ice Cream Social. Over 120 students were in attendance, dancing to the tunes of DJ Mr. Daniel Tappin, after eating a self-made sundae. The Social was the perfect “cool-down” to the week following Spring Break, and the perfect kick-off to warmer weather and refreshing treats!

MOUNT SINAI MIDDLE SCHOOL Looking Back on Kidsday: Views and Reflections By Daniella Graffeo

I

never thought it would happen. It was just a stroke of pure luck. Ever since I’ve started reading the paper, I was interested in Kidsday. I always wanted to try it. However, I knew teachers were already making plans and were really busy. Mr. Karl O’Leary, my English teacher, requested for Kidsday five years ago, in 2010, and in 2015, he finally received a chance. He was really happy and on one Friday in October, he mentioned that next Monday, for the kids that loved to write, could join the Kidsday club, and I wouldn’t have ever passed this chance up. I felt so lucky to be a part of this. Weeks later, the club received sign-up sheets. I remembered to get mine signed, just thinking of it as a simple sign-up into the club. I gave the slip to Mr. O’Leary during first period, rescheduled my lessons, and came back as Mr. O’Leary called my name. He told me that since I was one of the first people to hand in my slip, I had a chance to go to New York City. It was exciting, and he called my mom that November morning. I went to lunch with my friend Rianna, and Mr. O’Leary came into the cafeteria. He sat down next to me and said, “We’re going on a trip tomorrow.” I was like, “We are?” We were going to the city to watch “Daddy’s Home” at Viacom Studios before it came out. I was ecstatic. I found out later it was Gabriella Acquafredda, Greenlei Otto, Stephen Wilcken, and I who were going, with our parents, Mr. O’Leary, and his wife and son. Viacom Studios was huge and the journey was long, but we finally met Mr. Pat Mullooly, the Kidsday director, there. He was really funny and was great at his job. This trip was exciting. After the movie, we found out we had to go back to New York City next month, in December, to meet Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg to interview them about their movie parts! In between the trips, the Kidsday club met in the Mount Sinai Middle School library in afternoons with Pat Mullooly. The reporters included Gabriella Acquafredda, Jackie Black, Ashley Dua, Ava Erdmann, Jack Frycek, Katie Molloy, Arielle Mule, Greenlei Otto, Grace Plumitallo, Luciano Rienecker, Jake Ritchie, Emily Sifre, Rachel Smolarsky, Marissa Symington, Connor Wilcken, Stephen Wilcken, Jillian Zezima, and me. We worked really hard, and I believe that it really was worth it. Finally, the second trip to New York City came. It was a really nice day in the city. The sky was gray, but the temperature was great. Meeting Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell was really cool and probably one of the best experiences I have ever had. I will never forget it and I am thankful because I know not many people get the opportunity to personally meet a famous actor, but two of them is really lucky. Afterwards, the club met several more times, as we submitted article after article, experiencing and interviewing in the process. The articles ranged from Bubble Ball testing, Peer Support, Midori Japanese Sushi and Steakhouse, Skyzone, advice on Personal Information, Pet Couch Covers, Book Reviews, Jokes, and so much more. In January, four kids, Jake Ritchie, Ashley Dua, Jack Frycek, and Ava Erdmann had the opportunity to watch the movie, “Norm of the North” and meet and interview Heather Graham, a voice of a character in the movie, in one day! They had to leave really early, but I can tell it was so worth it, and they got to sing “Happy Birthday” with Heather Graham like we sang “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” with Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg (since their movie came out on Christmas). Between both interviews, many questions were asked, answered, and recorded (and it was really funny!) to organize an interview for the Long Island Newspaper. Overall, the whole experience was amazing. Thanks to Mr. O’Leary, this Kidsday Club has inspired me to become a writer. I love to write and would be happy to take up this profession. I believe that the reporters in this club worked so hard to achieve their goals, and once we saw our articles in the paper, we were so proud. We had to miss classes for this, but it was totally worth it! Additionally, Mr. O’Leary had so much patience to receive this position, waiting for five years, and he definitely deserves it. He is one of the best teachers I’ve ever had and over the past year, I’ve improved my writing so much, thanks to him. Over the past few months, I learned that trying new things and taking risks can lead to life-changing experiences to remember forever.

n Sunday evening, June 5, students from Mr. O’Leary’s English 7 class were honored by this year’s Long Island of the Year Poet, Mr. Gayl Teller. Reflecting Back, Looking Forward On Sunday, April 10, several students from Mr. O’Leary’s English 7 class were honored for their thematic projects at the Holocaust and Memorial Tolerance Center of Nassau County. Amy Huang’s poem “Lost and Found” earned first place honors, along with $150. Lizette Kelly (The Voice that was Silenced), Elaina Varriale (Out of Horror), and Gariella Acquafredda (Two Sides of the Same Belief), were recognized for the paintings/drawings in first ($150), second ($100), and third place ($50) respectively. And in the original video category, Sarah Hill’s “The Never-Ending Conflict of Bullying” left an imprint on all in the room, as she walked away with first place recognition ($150); Rachel Smolarsky and Greenlei Ott collaborated to create “The Printing Press” for second place ($100), and Nicole Deller’s “Elizabeth Blackwell: Medical Pioneer” earned third place ($50).

Walt Whitman Birthplace Awards On Sunday, June 5, Mr. O’Leary’s English 7 students visited the Walt Whitman Birthplace in West Hills to be recognized for the poetic efforts.

Lizette Kelly was selected as a Grand Champion winner for her submission “My Seasons” in the multimedia category. Gabriella Acquafredda – “Memories”; Greenlei Otto – “The Swampy Marsh”; Caroline Patak – “The NeverEnding Forest”; and Nina Caputo - “The Blizzard Child”; all received honors for their poetic multimedia creation. Danielle Graffeo was selected as a winner for her individual anthology entry Our World: A Collection of Poems of the World Around Us. And for the fourth time in the past five years, Mr. O’Leary’s class earned Grand Champion recognition for the class anthology: The Essence of Me.

ive students travelled to the 18 Annual Long Island Regional Envirothon on April 20. This year the competition was held at the USDAN Center for the Creative & Performing Arts in Wheatley Heights. The team of Julia McElheron, Johnathan Yu, Samin Zaman, Shannon Molloy and Clare Dana tested against twenty-nine other schools. The Envirothon consists of multiple choice group tests in the areas of aquatics, wildlife, soil, forestry, and current events. Each station also has hands-on activities such as testing water samples for pH, identifying trees, and completing a soil profile. In addition, the students prepared an oral presentation that was presented to a panel of judges for grading. This year the theme was to develop a management plan to control the invasive species, Hydrilla verticillata, in a lake. The team got together after school to study and develop their presentation.

his past April 16, the Class of 2017 enjoyed a fantastic Junior Prom at the Hamlet Country Club in Mount Sinai. The night was set to the backdrop of a “rustic” theme, meticulously designed by the Junior Class officers. The many days of preparation and hard work were evident with attention to every detail. After walking the famed Red Carpet through Mount Sinai High School’s gymnasium in front of family and friends, the night kicked off at the Hamlet with a grand entrance into the ballroom. Students wasted no time and got right into the night with dancing and great food. The party rocked on until about 11:00 p.m. and when it was all said and done, the Class of 2017 etched their own mark into the annals of Mount Sinai Junior Prom history. This great night could not have been possible without the extraordinary efforts of our class officers, student volunteers and members of our faculty and administration. The bar has been set very high for next year’s senior prom. If this year’s gala affair is any indicator of what is to be in the future, the Class of 2017 will be in for the most exciting events of all their high school experiences.

MOUNT SINAI HIGH SCHOOL Athletes Helping Athletes

Stuff-A-Bus

his year, Mount Sinai High School’s student/ athletes came and spoke with the elementary school children about making positive life choices with tobacco, alcohol, drug use, bullying, sportsmanship and civility. The student athletes delivered clear, and sometimes, personal messages regarding decisions that elementary school students will be make during their middle and high school years. As a culminating event, on May 11, Athletes Helping Athletes went to the elementary school to host field day for the fourth grade students. After a fun afternoon of sports and activities, the group enjoyed a pizza lunch and signed commemorative T-shirts.

On Sunday, May 15, members of the high school’s Student Council and Interact Club organized and participated in the annual Stuff-A-Bus fundraiser at the King Kullen supermarket in Mount Sinai. Stuff-A-Bus is a charity that focuses on filling a bus with nonperishable food and toiletries to provide to those who cannot obtain these basic necessities. These contributions are donated to Long Island Harvest, a food bank that will redistribute the donations as needed. Our fundraiser lasted from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Thanks to the efforts of our students and community, we were able to donate over 1,000 pounds of food to this worthy organization. Thank you for your support.

Tri-M Music Honor Society On April 6, fifty-one music students attended a trip to New York City. They started their day at an “Upclose and Personal” workshop, where they received a personal performance and recount of making it to Broadway from an actor/performer from the show, “Something Rotten.” They had lunch at the famous Carmine’s on Broadway, and proceeded to a matinee Broadway production of “Something Rotten.” This trip has been a tradition for the past ten years. Music students are able to take advantage of their proximity to one of the world’s greatest cities and experience professional performances by world -renowned artists. It was an inspiring day for all!

MOUNT SINAI HIGH SCHOOL National Honor Society Induction

O

n Thursday, April 21, fifty-one juniors and thirtynine seniors were inducted into the Mount Sinai High School Chapter of the National Honor Society. The four pillars of the National Honor Society are Character, Service, Leadership and Scholarship. To qualify, students must have earned a 91.5 weighted grade point average, perform fifty hours of community service and be interviewed by a five member faculty council. All members of the National Honor Society continue their service to the community by participating in weekly Peer-to-Peer Tutoring services offered free of charge to any student needing help in both the Middle School and High School. Model United Nations Conference: From May 12 through May 14, twenty-seven members of the high school’s Model United Nations Team competed at the Global Classrooms Model United Nations Conference in New York City along with 1600 other students from across the country and around the world. Representing the countries of Albania and Bolivia, these student delegates addressed many diverse and controversial topics including the Syrian refugee crisis, international drug smuggling, the fiscal distress amongst members of the European Union and the recent Iran Nuclear Agreement. Congratulations to all who participated! MOUNT SINAI HIGH SCHOOL Future Business Leaders of America The Mount Sinai Future Business Leaders of America Chapter (FBLA) was fortunate this year to send the following ten members to the Rochester State Leadership Competition from April 13 through April 15: Alex Cubillo, Brittany Grego, Isaac Kisten, Savanna Russiello-Tous, Patrick Scharf, Jake Ritter, Samuel Ritter, Spencer Spitz, Ryan Wilson and Su Yang. Each member competed in a minimum of 2 events that were either written exams or performance events and as a group they all competed in the Chapter Display. Under the leadership of Su Yang and Brittany Grego, our Chapter placed 5th for the Chapter Display event. The following members will move on to the National Competitions which will be held in Atlanta, Georgia, from June 28 through July 2: Isaac Kisten. Spencer Spitz, Alex Cubillo and Samuel Ritter. Isaac Kisten came in 1st place for Introduction to Business, Spencer Spitz came in 3rd for Word Processing, Alex Cubillo and Samuel Ritter came in 2nd for Entrepreneurship.

Special guest, Mr. Izzo, a Mount Sinai High School math teacher, sang “Every Rose Has Its Thorn,” with Tri-M president, Marissa Caputo. The café was transformed into a coffee house setting and Ms. Monteleone made her famous Music Department punch. All proceeds went to the Gregory Mantone Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Honors Art Show 2016 The Art Department proudly presented the 2016 High School Honors Art Show on Friday, May 20. The show took place in the high school’s auditorium and featured works from sophomores, juniors, and seniors currently enrolled in advanced level art courses. Paintings, drawings, collages, photographs, as well as 3-dimensional works were on display. Parents, students, and community members were welcomed with refreshments, courtesy of the Fine Arts Department, as they enjoyed the display.

n May 13, members of the Tri-M National Music Honor Society hosted the annual “Unplugged” event. It took place in the high school’s cafeteria from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. Refreshments were donated courtesy of the Friends of the Arts. This night was completely run by students, and consisted of live acoustic music.

Sweeney Todd The state of musical theatre in Mount Sinai High School is vibrant and strong. The three, well-attended performances of Sweeney Todd, School Edition, a winner of ten Tony Awards, thirteen Drama Desk Awards, and nine Lawrence Olivier Awards, gave the actors and audience members the opportunity to explore the dark side of human nature in a safe setting. When working on a theatre production, all the dynamics of “commitment to a group” come into play. Our program creates situations where students make choices and experience the results of those decisions. These lessons help develop life skills that will impact future “moments” in their lives. The value of every discipline included in our school’s curriculum is elevated because of the need to integrate subject matter and skills learned to create a successful production.

College Pride Day 2016

On Friday, May 6, Mount Sinai School District celebrated College Pride Day. The purpose of this day is two-fold; to highlight the colleges/universities our high school seniors will be attending in the fall, and to have the underclassmen start thinking about future college plans. Students and staff were encouraged to wear a shirt/hat of their choice. Seniors wore shirts of the colleges they would be attending in the fall, while underclassmen wore a shirt of a college they wish to attend, where their parents may have attended, or maybe their favorite college team. Faculty and staff were involved as well, wearing apparel from the undergraduate/graduate school they attended. The day was a huge success. Pictures of our seniors from this day will be displayed in the front lobby for the rest of the year.

Spring Blood Drive

Again, members of the Peer Leaders and Student Council ran a very successful spring blood drive. With candy donated by Food Town in Rocky Point, students set up a recruiting table to encourage students to donate blood. Altogether the drive collected sixty-three units of blood. MOUNT SINAI HIGH SCHOOL MUSIC & ART Mr. Stephen Mantone, Music & Applied Arts Director Councilwoman Bonner Thanks the Mount Sinai High School Art Club for Participating in Town’s Recycle Bin Art Project Farmingville, NY – Councilwoman Jane Bonner (back row, right) recently took the opportunity to personally thank members of Mount Sinai High School Art Club for their participation in Brookhaven Town’s annual Recycle Bin Art Project, sponsored by the Town’s Waste Management Department. Participants were asked to paint recycle bins in an effort to encourage recycling throughout Town, specifically at the parks where they will be placed adjacent to garbage cans. “Protecting the environment is everyone’s responsibility and it’s important that we all do our part to recycle,” said Councilwoman Bonner. “Thanks to the Art Club students, Brookhaven can be a cleaner, greener place to live.”

aniel Kirtman, a 7th grader @Mt. Sinai Middle School, was nominated to perform at the annual Honors Recital held at the Staller Center Recital Hall at Stony Brook University on June 2, 2016. Students were selected from a group of approximately 500 hundred piano students across Suffolk County and nominated by their private piano teacher. Selected students must have participated in two of five performing opportunities sponsored by Suffolk Piano Teachers Foundation, and must be outstanding achievers in repertoire and practice habits.

Clandestine was written by Mount Sinai native Kate A. McGrath and based on the experiences of her father, a retired police detective captain, to present a tense, challenging look at the real impact of the war on drugs, specifically the continuing invasion of methamphetamine into middle-class America. For her performance, McGrath won the Houston Broadcast Film Critics Worldfest 2016 best supporting actress award. Another Long Island native, Janine Laino of Hempstead, co-founded Feenix Films and shepherded the project through from concept to completion while also serving as treasurer and social outreach director. The film was directed by Ramsey, NJ resident David LaRosa and co-produced by New Milford Resident Chris Ryan. Both received best supporting actor nominations at the famed film fest (LaRosa from WorldFest and Ryan from the Houston Broadcast Film Critics). The lead actor of the film (and south Jersey native), Nick DeMatteo, was nominated for best lead actor, bringing the total accolades for this Indy to a whopping five from a festival that helped launch the careers of Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Ridley Scott, Ang Lee, the Coen Brothers, to name just a few. "It is always great when your film is noticed in some capacity. What is great about Worldfest is how particular they are about really examining a film. It makes the Gold Remi award for Crime Drama so much more meaningful," said LaRosa, who also serves as president of Feenix Films and was asked to sit on a Director's Panel during the festival.

Besides honoring Clandestine with the award, this year's event played host to the world premiere of the film. Feenix Films is a local film ensemble company modeled after the theatrical resident companies of old, it is comprised of a talented and diverse stable of artists and tech persons who do whatever is needed to produce a successful work of media, including acting, writing, directing, camera work, graphic and web design, music composition and recording, and more. ver 300 Mount Sinai students participated in the Solo/Ensemble Festival sponsored by the New York State Music Association on Friday, June 3 and Saturday June 4 at the Rocky Point School District. The students selected a piece of music according to the level of difficulty, and prepared it along with scales and sight reading. The scores received will aid in the selection to various AllCounty Festivals in the coming school year. In addition to these students, seventeen high school sophomores and juniors competed at the All-State level, the highest level of difficulty. Ten performing organizations from the Middle School and High School participated in the Major Organization Festival held on May 16-19 at West Islip School District. Their scores were as follows: Middle School 7 Band, Gold Middle School 8 Band, Gold High School Concert Band, Gold High School Symphonic Band, Gold Middle School 7/8 Chorus, Silver High School Chorus, Silver Middle School 7 Orchestra, Gold Middle School 8 Orchestra, Gold High School String Orchestra, Silver High School Concert Orchestra, Gold w/Distinction
