Hi I’m Josephine Shipley

MEng Civil Engineering, University of Glasgow

I

applied for the graduate programme with Mott MacDonald after spending two summer placements with the company, which I really enjoyed.

I gained experience working in the potable water team, based in Cambridge, before moving to an onsite placement in Brighton, working on foul water projects. I’m currently based in Reading as part of the developer services team and I’d really like to work abroad in future. The key pull of the graduate development programme at Mott MacDonald is the company ethos. The atmosphere is great for young professionals. Everyone is approachable and willing to help. You can really expand your perspective as there are lots of highly experienced and qualified professionals happy to share their knowledge.

The atmosphere in Mott MacDonald is inclusive and I’ve found staff to be enthusiastic and approachable.

Your future with Mott MacDonald

Engineering gives you the opportunity to see tangible results from your hard work.

Hi I’m Simon Cole

Hi I’m Chris MacNicol

I chose engineering to problem solve, be practical and get my hands dirty from time to time.

MEng Electrical Engineering, University of Southampton

I

I was lucky enough to work on the structural design of Heathrow Terminal 2B, a £500M building that will eventually serve 20M passengers a year. As the project moved into the construction phase, I was able to take a role as part of Mott MacDonald’s construction support team based on site. This gave me the chance to see my designs being built and to experience the unique challenges of constructing such a complex structure.

The biggest challenge that I have faced was working on a project to upgrade the protection systems on a number of national grid overhead lines in Wales. This involved travelling to each site and surveying existing equipment, determining appropriate replacement protection relays and producing a suite of specification documents, all to a tight deadline.

ott MacDonald has successfully delivered some of the largest and most complex engineering projects in the world. The opportunity to be part of that was very exciting.

The role involved a lot more responsibility than I was expecting so early in my career. Although this was great experience, the complexity of the project and the speed of construction meant that, at times, the pressure was very high. However, the hard work has been worth it and the building is going to be very impressive when it opens.

wanted to work on a range of projects and challenges and consultancy offered this. I knew that Mott MacDonald’s graduate scheme was accredited by the IET and that I would receive first class support whilst working towards chartership.

I have also developed a financial model for the operation, maintenance and decommissioning of a proposed offshore network, composed of offshore platforms and high voltage subsea cables. This is an exciting project that pioneers a new way of efficiently connecting offshore wind power installations. My role involved understanding the proposed system, gathering specialist input from experts and developing a dynamic model that allows the client to analyse the costs of running and maintaining the system over its lifetime.

? EXPERIENCE IS AN ADVANTAGE

How many graduates and students do you recruit each year? In 2014 we will recruit between 150 to 200 graduates on to our training scheme and 100 students for summer internships or industrial trainee placements.

When does your graduate scheme start? We do not have fixed start dates but most graduates start working for us between July and September. If a role requires a particular start date we will discuss this with you before the interview.

Do you only recruit the degree disciplines mentioned? The ones mentioned are the disciplines we have the most opportunities for. We sometimes have specific requirements for other disciplines – these opportunities will be advertised on our careers site.

Do you need industry experience to apply for the graduate scheme? No, although some experience is an advantage as it means you understand the work environment and have made an informed decision to work in our industry. If you are not due to graduate this year, we suggest you apply for one of our placements to gain experience.

As our requirements change each year, you can contact our team to discuss if there will be an opportunity that matches your skills. Please do not simply email your CV – you will be asked to apply for a specific vacancy being advertised. But you can submit your CV via our portal if there is not a role that matches what you are looking for.

What are your entry requirements for the graduate scheme? You should have achieved, or be predicted to achieve, a 2:1 or above in a relevant degree.

FAQs

2:1&

Can you help engineering graduates with a BEng become chartered? Graduates with a BEng degree are supported and encouraged to gain an IEng qualification and then proceed to CEng. This can be done through the technical report route for your respective engineering institution. Alternatively, you can apply for funding to complete a postgraduate qualification. Do you have opportunities outside of the UK? Graduates we recruit for our UK training scheme will be based here, however, there are some opportunities for graduates to work overseas on projects. These opportunities depend on the sector you choose to work in and whether the current projects require the skills of a graduate.

SOME GRADUATES WORK ON OVERSEAS PROJECTS

Can graduates apply for summer internship or industrial placements? No, these placements are specifically for students. We sometimes require graduates on a temporary basis and these positions will be advertised on our careers site.

Graduate positions in other countries are advertised on our global careers site or you can contact our local offices – details can be found on our website. Remember to check whether you are eligible to work in the country you are applying for. Do you offer financial sponsorship to students? We are committed to supporting the students who will become the graduates of the future and that is why all of our placements are paid. We are involved in various schemes, such as the QUEST scholarship, but we do not currently offer financial sponsorship outside of these schemes.
