Collection of the port expenses by the members for some RoRo vessels including cargo handling costs Data were given to interested shipping lines Return to ENA in form of a vessel calculation, including charterhire and bunkers etc. At the same time ENA members collecting information on present trucking rates from their area to enable lines / us to compare the findings with the searoute To reconfirm our figures we have asked ISL Baltic in Lübeck to make a study from Cuxhaven‘s catchment area to the western part of Spain i.e. La Coruna and Lisboa The Port Authority for the ports in Galicia will also arrange a study i.e. from Ferrol to the catchment areas of the ENA members
Further steps by ENA •
Collection of information from keyaccount customer in our markets by potential/product and their present transport prices
•
Convince keyaccounts to the ENA motorway of the sea project Is a change from accompanied to unaccompanied transport possible, accepted by the truckers? Following a meeting in Ferrol with spanish and galician forwarders and trucker associations, we have heard that they will support the ENA Motorway of the Sea project and ship unaccompanied trailers
•
ENA to contact interested shipping lines
Media activities
Volume to/from Spain/Portugal
•
Following information received there are approx. 25.000 trucks weekly crossing the French / Spanish western border Biarritz/Bilbao
•
The ENA project need only 700 trailer weekly in each direction to generate full vessels, based on a capacity of 140 trailer
•
The following pages shall demonstrate some findings made sofar.
Which routes Cuxport can offer to the Baltic Sea To be able to load trailer, there are three possibilities -
Shuttle Train or roadtransfer between Lübeck and Cuxhaven
-
RoRo Ships enroute to the ARA ports to stop in Cuxhaven
Assumptions of the calculation
The calculation is relevant for one complete truck (accompanied) with load. The costs for road transport within the Western European Union amount of 0.85 EUR per km For the ferry transport a discount of 30% of the list price has been calculated.

The transport by sea, following our studies, is cheaper than the landtransport. The use of rolltrailer with a capacity upto 100 tons will further reduce transportcosts We presented our project to a wider interested audience On Oct 20th and 21rd, 2005 a colloquium took place in Cherbourg Motorways of the Sea: Utopia or Solution for the Future This event, with approx 180 interested persons from the shipping side, shippers and politicians, was a large success. The EU administration will support this project as best as possible. Support is also available from the French-, the German- the Spanish/Galician Authorities.
First positive sign One shipping line ENA have had contact with since the beginning, consider to start from Oostende to Ferrol They intend to withdraw one vessel from one of their services to perform one roundtrip per week to test the market acceptance. A Marco Polo application has been filed, with the explicit information in this document, that they will start one of the ENA routes i.e. ENA has been mentioned a few times. When this trial is positive, we expect a further expansion to Cuxhaven to benefit their large catchment area
On behalf of ENA Eurocoast Network Assocation I kindly thank you for your attention and possible help
