A Message From Our Executive Director

Architecture, Renovations, and Jewish Living Temple Beth-El is a mission driven institution. I like that. We are serving the spiritual needs of our community when we talk with a family whose child is having a Bar Mitzvah; when we quickly respond to a mourning family who has lost a loved one; when we develop a new holiday program to enrich the congregation; and when we welcome a young family whose children are entering our Religious School. The clergy, the staff, and the Board leadership embrace this mission with gusto! You have heard much about the new renovationmany of you enjoyed the new office and congregational spaces over the High Holidays and Sukkot. As Executive Director, I am working with the Executive Committee--Vikki Grodner, Arlene Fisher, Loraine Reznik, Dan Weinrib and Howard Sokol--to re-energize, and “renovate” if you will, the administration at TBE. I view staffing as architecture—where does this fit, what do we need “over there”, what colors match and work well together. I am delighted with how well our current team is working together. Congregants have quickly

come to know Susan Biedinger through our communications and membership efforts. Sam Zuckerman is settling in to his event coordination role, helping staff and congregants conduct special events with smooth planning and flair. Barbara Rothman continues to carefully attend to the many ritual-life details as Administrative Assistant to the Clergy. And Jennifer Taylor is handling the finance and operations role with grace and a smile. These roles are being developed with a plan for the long-term needs of Temple Beth-El…and meeting these needs advances the spiritual mission of the synagogue. In the coming months, we will continue this architectural endeavor, looking closely at the infrastructure of the shul. From communications, to maintenance, to finance, we will address every area to ensure our synagogue continues to successfully serve its spiritual mission--to enhance Jewish living in Birmingham Alabama. I like that! If you have ideas to help us in our “architectural” planning, don’t hesitate to contact me. Bob Greenberg

Message From Our Education Department While studying the Shema we encountered the second paragraph (Deut 11: 13 -21), the essence follows: “…if ye shall hearken diligently unto My commandments which I command you this day, that I will give the rain of your land that thou mayest gather in thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil. And I will give grass in thy fields for thy cattle, Take heed to yourselves, lest your heart be deceived, and serve other gods, and worship them; and the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and He shut up the heaven, so that there shall be no rain, and the ground shall not yield her fruit; and ye perish quickly from off the good land…” The question posed was: “Does God send rain and healthy crops because we follow mitzvoth and/or does he punish us by severe weather conditions?” It was both a question and observation. The Torah speaks clearly about a system of reward and punishment linked to the observance of the commandments; is that how we understand it today? Many people struggle with the second paragraph of the Shema because of its conflict with both our emotional belief in a benevolent God; and our intellectual belief that weather patterns don’t follow a community’s level of ritual observance. How then can we reconcile these issues? A hint of the answer lies in the third paragraph of the Shema where we are warned against greed and gluttony. If we abuse the land, water and air that God has provided for us by destroying animal habitats and over planting crops, eventually they will rebel. It was not that long ago that we discovered the problem of dumping waste into clean water, or the harm caused to aquifers by pesticide runoff. Acid rain, poultry slaughterhouse abuse, strip mining the list of our thoughtlessness can go on and on. If we are stewards of the land, if we don’t over fish the seas, if we take into account the totality of nature’s bounty and its delicate balance, then we will be blessed by plenty. In essence that is the reminder of Sukkot. We care for the land and the land cares for us year after year. We celebrate the last and final gathering of crops and vegetables so we can endure the uncertain future of the cold rainy season to follow. Our ancestors filled storehouses or root cellars hoping there would be enough to get through to Spring.

Metaphorically, we are filling our program storehouse. October was a month that brought about wonderful activities, increased attendance and overall satisfaction from parents and students alike. The Sukkot service and cookout were marked by enthusiasm and the good thing is you don’t have to wait till Spring. We will continue to have wonderful events throughout the year. We are looking forward to the Family Shabbat morning service the last Saturday in October and of course the visit of Rabbi Salazar from Sofer on Site who will talk to the Hebrew school children on Wednesday, November 2nd in both the afternoon and evening programs. Our storehouse is full of programs and memories of a great harvest of excitement.

Congregants’ Response to What makes you feel thankful for Temple Beth-El? The United States designates a special day for giving thanks. As an American Jew, I wondered about the Jewish view of celebrating Thanksgiving. So I went to Google and typed “Jewish View of Thanksgiving.” Here are just two interesting quotes from what I found: “Giving thanks is a very Jewish idea. As Jews we give thanks every day as soon as we wake up, right before we go to bed, and at least a hundred times in between. The idea of thanks-giving is thus supported and celebrated by Judaism. The celebration of Thanksgiving is a wonderful gesture. “ I think Thanksgiving is a perfect opportunity for congregants to express why they are thankful for Temple Beth-El. So I asked several members of our congregation: Why are you thankful for Temple Beth-El? Here are responses from members from several different ages and stages of life: From a parent with a preschool child: “I love how the Kiddush luncheons bring everyone together and build a community for my children.” From a parent with a pre-Bar/Bat Mitzvah-age child: “This is a challenging time and I am glad to have other parents going through this same experience. I am thankful for Temple Beth-El and its staff. They offered me extra support, especially with the preparations for my child’s Bat Mitzvah.” From parents of one of our teens: “We're thankful for Temple Beth-El because it gives our teens so many ways to remain connected to Judaism after their Bar or Bat Mitzvah.” From a young single (25 to 35 years): “This is my first year away from home and my family on the Holidays. I went to Temple Beth-El in search of people that remind me of my congregation at home. I am thankful Temple Beth-El was here. I felt at home and not so lonely.” Empty nester (40 to 50 years): “I am so thankful for my Temple Beth-El home; I have raised my family here. Everything about it, feels like home. Sitting in the sanctuary during services with the light pouring in through our stained glass windows gives me a sense of tranquility and connection.” Baby Boomer (50 years and up): “I am thankful that Temple Beth-El survived the 60s & 70s. I can tell my Grandchildren stories about how Cantor O survived preparing our group for Bar Mitzvah.” Senior Member: “As a Sisterhood member, I am thankful for the programming. I have attended Temple Beth-El most of my life and I am comfortable here. When I am here with others my age, I do not feel alone.” Grandparent: “One of the strengths of Beth-El is the mixture of relative newcomers and multigenerational families, both of which have played an active roll in our congregational family. It is a source of strength for the congregation as well as for the families that make it a special place.” Jewish tradition teaches that one of our key duties is to make the world a better place for future generations. At Temple Beth-El, we encourage everyone to consider leaving a legacy to ensure that future generations will be able to enjoy Temple Beth-El. The act of creating a legacy empowers you to complete the work of your heart, and to enjoy the peace that it brings. You are assured that your religious home will continue and the Jewish future will be bright. The Foundation’s mission to create a strong endowment for sustaining Temple Beth-El cannot be accomplished with out your help. The Foundation is thankful to the congregation for your support. Girl Talk: Life-Saving News on Breast and Ovarian Cancer On September 18 at Temple Beth-El, our Sisterhood and the Sisterhoods of Temple EmanuEl and Knesseth Israel, along with Hadassah, joined for Girl Talk: Life-Saving News on Breast and Ovarian Cancer. Almost 70 attendees enjoyed a light nosh while gaining important knowledge thanks to presentations from experts in the field, including Debbie Wiatrak, MD; Bari Cotton, RN; Merideth Sanders, MS, CG; and Jamie Odrezin, MD. Two of the speakers shared their own experiences with being diagnosed with cancer, which was interesting to hear from both their personal and professional viewpoints. Dr. Odrezin provided an update on Hadassah's pioneering work in cancer diagnosis and treatment, and discussed her visit to Hadassah Hospital at Ein Kerem. Our fourth speaker, a certified genetic counselor from the UAB Department of Genetics, educated the group about methods used to detect possible genetic mutations that cause higher risks of cancers. She specifically discussed the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes responsible for hereditary breast and ovarian cancers in Ashkenazi Jews. A question and answer session addressed and clarified many concerns about these complex subjects. The program was extremely well received. Tzedakah was collected among the attendees to further Hadassah's mission in cancer research, and all four organizations jointly made donations to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and Norma Livingston Ovarian Cancer Foundation. Special thanks to Alisa Nadler, Lori Weil, Beth Smokey, Lora Schwartz, Ginger Brook, Sharon Kahn, Natalie Sikora, and Pam Ruttenberg for their part in making this event such a success!

In the book of Psalms we read: "The light of the Lord is the soul of man." These words are so significant that they are engraved in the Ner Tamid, the eternal light in our sanctuary. Each Shabbat, and every Festival, we light candles to mark the holiday and bring a symbol of God's light into our hearts and into our homes. Five times a year we light a Yahrzeit candle. The light of the candle reminds us of our departed loved ones and our faith that their spirits live in the presence of God. A memorial plaque dedicated to your loved one is a lasting tribute that will reside in our sanctuary forever. On the day of their passing, and on each Yizkor day, the light will glow, reminding us of their lives and our love for them. For more information, please contact the memorial light committee: Lynette Mazer (205.967.5270), Margy Rosenbaum (205.871.8475), or Vicki Flax (205.967.1243).

Reminder of Cemetery Maintenance Fees In January, we reached out to Temple Beth-El members who currently have lots in Block 40 at Elmwood Cemetery, to request a $100 annual maintenance fee. Proper support of our cemetery involves the participation of every owner of a lot in the system. This a friendly reminder if you have not paid this maintenance fee yet, please do so at your earliest convenience. If you have questions, you may call Cemetery Committee Chair Barbara Bonfield or the TBE office at 933.2740.
