ZABEL, Morton Dauwen

February 1lj., 1967

Mr. Morton Dauwen Zabel c/o The Macmillan Company 60 Fifth Avenue New York City 100111 Dear Mr. Zabelr A conveniently arranged collection of the work of our Maine poet, Edwin Arlington Robinson, is certainly a book to be welcomed, and should prove useful as well as highly interesting not only to those familiar with his poetry, but also to those making his acquaintance# Your SELECTED POEMS OF EDWIN ARLINGTON ROBINSON is, it seems to us, a desirable book to be included in the Maine Author Collection# You may know of this permanent exhibit of books by Maine writers, or about Maine subjects# Most of the volumes are inscribed presentation copies# We also make every effort to obtain biographical and critical information on our authors, making the exhibit a well-rounded and valuable collection for visitors and students# We hope that you may want to inscribe a copy of your volume on Robinson for this purpose# Our good wishes to you for the success of the book. Sincerely yours

Mr. Arthur Gregor Senior Editor Trade Department The Macmillan Company 866 Third Avenue New York City 10022 Dear Mr. Gregor: Thank you for writing to us about Mr. Zabel. If, as you suggest, the Robinson book with an inscription by Mr. Dickey, could be made available for the Maine Author Collection -- yes, we think we should like that solution very much. Since Robinson's death, we have tried to include in the collection the volumes about him and his poetry. This particular collection of poems is, of course, in the general lending section of the library, but a copy in the Robinson section of the Maine exhibit would be desirable. We appreciate your suggestion. Sincerely yours

Mr, Morton Dauwen Zabel c/o The Macmillan Company 60 Fifth Avenue New York City 1t Dear Mr. Zabel: You are not, we understand, a native of this state; but because you have edited a volume of Edwin Arlington Robinson's poems, and he was an eminent son of Maine, we write to you about the Maine Author Collection. This is a permanent exhibit collection of books by Maine writers, or books about the state. Most of the books are inscribed presentation copies, and the nearly three thousand volumes, together with our files of biographical and critical material, make an impressive, useful and valuable display of Maine writing. All Robinson's works are in the collection, of course, and we have been very fortunate in being able to add those books about him and his poetry which were published after his death. So we hope that you may want to inscribe and present a copy of SELECTED POEMS..... for inclusion in the collection. Our very good wishes to you for the success of the book. Sincerely yours
